That is too bad. I liked that first idea. Would you consider more traditional commissions or perhaps open an auction for one instead?

Unfortunately no. It all comes down to time. Understand that with a few exceptions, most people doing commission work are earning less than minimum wage. I don't mind this, as I see it as an investment: I've been building pay over time as I improve and reach more people. But it does mean that efficiency is very, very important. With a YCH I can get it set up, get two or three people on board, and get it done with minimal overhead. With an ordinary commission I have all the work of a YCH, plus a bunch of time spent on back and forth trying to match the commissioner's idea and what I'm making, negotiating what I will and won't draw, negotiating what I can and can't draw (ability) and so on.

In addition to all that, my pieces aren't just work in the moment, they're also a way to get word out about me when they're posted here and other places. Even more so now that personal pieces probably won't be happening much for a while. This means I have to try to give them appeal beyond just the person buying them. That's doable with YCHs, but difficult with ordinary commissions. Too specific to the client in many cases. And ordinary commissions come from client ideas, by definition, which makes the content produced over time a lot more random and inconsistent in flavor. This in turn gradually makes my gallery less and less appealing to my followers/watchers in general, driving demand for further commissions DOWN in a negative feedback loop.

Fundamentally, ordinary commissions just don't make economic sense, and never have. Any artist doing them is hemorrhaging time and money. Some can afford to do so, because they're making a ton, or because it's mostly a hobby, or some combination. But for someone who even a little serious about what they're doing, they just aren't worth it.

Glad you liked the idea though. Maybe I'll have a chance to draw it at some point.
