Well, there's character quirks and personalities. Sometimes I'll see something online like a meme or have a convo with some about something and it just so happens to be something that my OC would do. Or maybe like, something silly that you yourself would do, translated into your fursona.

Oftentimes, I just give references to the artist and ask them to “draw and pose as you see fit”. More often than not I get excellent results

I either

a) Have an idea I had backlogged for awhile that I finally get commissioned
b) see an artist I love suddenly open comms without warning, have no idea present, and have a mini panic attack while I improvise an idea out of the ether

I keep a running list of the random ideas I get but always forget to refer back to.

I have too many ideas, but I have the opposite of not being able to find people. That or when I try to send in submissions I get ghosted which also hurts.

I think it depends on the artist I'm commissioning. A lot of the artists I follow tend to specialize in a couple kinks/fetishes, so I'd lean into that but with my own OCs. Alternatively, if I can't think of anything NSFW, I'd just ask for a pic of my Sona drinking coffee or something; just something really chill.

Honestly, this happens to me way more than I'd like to admit. I have a live document with a bunch of random ideas for when I need to pull out a prompt, and I just add to it whenever a mood strikes or I get something.

Honestly, like 80% of the time I dont even think of the commission details, or which OC I wanna put on it until I get the comm. You let your soul answer when you see the comm sheet.

I've started making a list of "ideas". Whenever something pops into my head, or i see something that I like, I'll write it down and look back on it when I want to get a commission. So far I've got like... 12 thought out ideas, and like 15 or so quick thoughts that I need to expand on before I can actually use (unless I know the artist enough to just give them the blurb and a ref)

Next time you see something that rocks the boat, write it down, or if you think of a particularly lewd idea, write it down and come back to it later and expand on it

then either: Use the themed sales of artists, YCHs or grant artistic freedom (or use a stock image site and use a random image as pose reference)

I just go to sex pose website and pick a pose and go "I wa dat"

-search (artist name) order:score
-commission your character in the same pose as the top rated picture (or a similar one)
-get quality art every time

For me, I check the artist I'm looking to commission, see their past work, and see if I find any interest in what they did before.

Overtime I collect ideas for myself or save artworks on Bookmarks (for poses/scenarios/etc) and add my own touch to my comms. I also love to commission with some friends' OCs and sonas, it kinda saves some money or you can make amazing/funny gifts for your friends.

Ya got me. I don't even consider horny thoughts "thinking" really. I was mostly going for what teckworks said.

I totally get you when it comes to shyness though. I get flustered as heck with my character and talking lewd stuff with people I'm not super close to only makes it worse. It helps to try and have some common ground to sort of break the ice, even if it's just a certain vague idea or kink. I can't speak for everybody, but having some freedom to work creatively helps with it too. Working it out with clients/artists have always been my best experiences.

look at artists i like and see what scenarios they’d draw best for mine/friends’ characters. also just developing a real love for random set works that you see and thinking “damn this is such a mood for muh OC” is pretty useful. and i HIGHLY advise using your sticky notes app to save ideas and link it to your phone so you’re never far away from an idea to quickly send to an artist

Yeah the sticky notes move is overpowered. I guess my other pro commissioner advice would be to don’t do it if you don’t have to. The best thing is to only act on 11/10 ideas from accordingly solid artists. If you’re just buying art to buy art then it might not be something you associate with the price you paid!

It's really hard. It's like you're finally getting something from an artist you admire and the opportunity may not come again, so you start trying to think up the perfect idea and it's just not happening.

This is at least partly why I almost never get commissions. XD

i guess when people tell me that i dont really like it much only because im bad with ideas lol but if we're like already friends and ive talked to them for a while and we kinda have talked about some ideas before then ill sorta have a gist of what id like to draw

Well, not sure if my answer would help considering how few commissions/images in general I've gotten

Nine times outta ten, I just think of something they'd be doing naturally, or just pick a pose for them to stand in that fits their overall personality.

I have a table I roll on because I'm a D&D nerd and dice are my gods

I just find a pose I like and save it to a pose folder then try to think of an artist to get that pose from.

I jot down the various ideas that appear in my imagination in my journal, and omit the ideas that're silly and wouldn't actually work.

Feels like a mix of spur of the moment and long-rooted ideas.

It just comes to you out of thin air, at least that's what happens to me.

sometimes it's a flavor of the day thing, sometimes I wanna challenge an artist to broaden their horizons, and soemtimes, I see an artist and my mind's eye just... envisions the perfect pic to get drawn by the particular artist.

Sometimes i see random/funny stuff on Twitter and that helps or friends help with suggestions too or if i can, I'll let the artist see what they wanna go with

Funnily enough, this isn't even the hardest part for me. It's wording it in details to whoever I'm commissioning. Especially with nsfw lol

I tend to go with poses, characters etc. that would look good in the artist's style. Whether or not they've drawn such subject matter before, I trust it's close enough to their comfort zone while also encouraging a new challenge. I usually stick to a basic description and let them go from there.
As for specific poses, I like to go with two characters making out, groping each other, full-on fucking, or some other intimate activity that suits them.

It's kinda easy for me. I'm always brimming with ideas, so I just go with the flow and make sure it's easy for the artist as well to do so. Too complicated and it's a instant denial in my head. I prefer 2d ish drawings so it's more simplier.

I'll be honest it's hard for me. I've had one bad experience before and that kept me shy for a while. But I've been more outgoing since then.

Though i've always been shy with that kind of stuff. It REALLY helps if I know the person beforehand and thankfully i've made friends with a ton of artists and know what they're like and they know about me.
