Art Stance Elaboration
Status:
As views and opinions change, this page too is subject to change.
tl;dr:
Art subjects are a figment of imagination; a rendered thought to which no harm can be done. Art is not a living thing and as such does not need consent of any kind beyond what is stated in intellectual property laws. Based on that view; I'm a principled proponent that all art is a valid form of expression as long as it stays a fictional indulgence. This includes but isn't limited to distasteful art.
This only applies to fictional works with fictional and non-allegory subjects -- I am strongly against propagandist/hateful artwork and works that seek to do real-world harm. Read the 'exceptions' section for more on this.
Intro:
In light of it becoming an increasingly contentious subject, I'd like to be explicitly upfront about my convictions, and detail what my stances are on controversial artwork. I won't beat around the bush and outright say that I am pro-expression on a broad and principle level, almost without exceptions. There are of course some exceptions, which I'll go into a little farther down in the 'exceptions' section.
That said, everything I make and upload will be done so ethically, and in accordance with both law and the upload policies of the sites I post to. No people, animals or property will be hurt or exploited in the making of it, and is made by an adult, and is intended for adults only.
Reasoning:
Art is fiction, and is per definition a figment of imagination rendered onto a media of choice or expertise. Being extensively a thought, it does not need any more consent, or consideration, than an average video game NPC or cartoon character. It is a thing, thought or concept, not a living being. It cannot be maimed by actions, nor suffer the consequences thereof. Whatever respect is given, or connection felt, is entirely a projection of the beholder.
Opinion:
Bluntly put, it is my opinion that all forms of art are legit and should not be condemned or prosecuted (legally or socially.) Art based on make-belief isn't real, meaning there is nothing wrong with even the vilest renderings. Full disclosure -- This includes generally considered unpopular/controversial works. Works containing depicted instances of (fictional;) abuse, feral, bestiality, cub, gore, murder, torture, snuff, non-consensual, fatal vore, ect. That is not to say I like- or can even stomach looking at, some of these, I merely support its right to exist, and to be consumed.
I do not believe in the 'slippery slope' or 'gateway' porn hypothesis'. Everyone has the responsibility to not-harm others, and anyone that harms someone willingly, or out of need for gratification, is either evil or sick. I hold everyone, including myself, to that responsibility. To stick to the metaphor, the slope is a cliff and you're either on it or not. The monsters for whom it's 'slippery' should not set the rules, but be treated as the exceptions, and dealt with harshly and accordingly.
After Thought:
To police what art is allowed to exist and circulate, I believe to be akin to police what people are allowed to think and feel. Which is not a sentiment I can in good consciousness support. People seeking to forcefully sanitize or demonize any form of artistic expression will find no champion in me.
Exceptions:
That said, I DO NOT SUPPORT;
-Content that depicts real abusive/criminal acts, with real subjects.
-Content that is meant to incite and/or further dangerous movements.
-Content that seeks to cause targeted harm to (a) person(s) and/or creature(s,) or intends to reach beyond fiction and imagination despite being fiction itself.
-Content depicting someone's likeness (fursonas included to an extent) in sexual situations without permission.
-Content used as propaganda for hateful/harmful/racist agendas.
I will without hesitation contact the appropriate authorities and/or site staff upon strong enough suspicion of wrong-doing.
Personal:
I know this stance will not be popular with everyone - and to each their own. But in effort to be transparent and upfront I felt compelled to elaborate and put this where it is accessible. I do not want people to feel bamboozled, cheated or lied to by stumbling upon these sentiments after years of support, so here it is. Do note I will not respond to excessively hostile and loaded responses, so please be respectful should a dialogue based on any of this occur.
Should these stances find you as unacceptable, and render you unable to support me or my work here on out - I would like to thank you for doing so till now, and wish you well in your future endeavors.
Thank you for taking the time.
