Eh. May not be fandom-wide, but my experience with a local furry community is that it was sociopathically cliquish. Like, 'bail on planned event at the meeting place to play DDR instead and don't even invite the out-of-towners, ha-ha, sucks to be them' cliquish. That's just one horror story from a very short but unpleasantly eventful span of pseudo-interaction. Choose 'your people' based on their quality, not their shared interests.

Reading through the comments, it seems a LOT of people are there with you, too. What is in NC that furries are attracted to? Or what in NC is transforming people into fur fans? These are the mysteries of our time...
