Imagine a city under siege to the point of eating rats. Your church's used as a target by enemy artillery, who have placed your captured soldier infront of their lines as a human shield.
Then imagine you surrender and the enemy refuse to lift the siege or accept your surrender untill they can hand the conquered city and victory to their leaders on a silver platter. On a national holiday, At the cost of civilian lives and further suffering.

Wow! Nice history lesson! I read the Wikipedia article and was slightly amused that the casualty list included 'and one camel'.
