The Terra-Maw, my dnd homebrew race in the works

So I've been working on this race for my gal Liz for awhile now, but haven't had a spot to jot it all down just yet, so figured why not make a journal about it? Would love to hear any sort of feedback/advice or even extra ideas. :3
So, the Terra-maw are a subterranean race that dig through the earth to find minerals and ore, their main sources of food. They can eat 'normal' stuff like the other races, but wouldn't get the same benefit unless it was possibly enchanted. Due to their diet, they're usually divided into two types, Ore-biters and Gem-biters. Each one gets a small buff/attack if they take a turn in combat to eat their main type of food. Ores provide a temporary stat or resistance buff, while the gems provide a one use magic or breath attack, all dependent on the type they eat, i.e. rubies would give a small fire based breath attack, or a lump of iron to improve AC. I know there would need to be a lot of balancing work to be done to make this more viable, but figured it helps make them a versatile and strong race, if pricey. There is a third type, the Magic-biters, those who dine of magic crystals, items and artifacts. These are more of a taboo though, as either type can become a Magic-biter by ingesting said items. Magically filled items and such are addictive to the Terra-maw and make them much stronger, but in doing so, causes them to slowly become more and more feral and eventually be nothing more than an ever-hungry monster. The Terra-maw usually avoid water, due to their diet, they tend to be quite dense and heavy and end up having a hard time in the water.
