Can anyone help me what this article actually means and implies? I'm like really confused and I want to know what the original poster meant regarding adoptables and character designs.

adopts can be sold but the maker of the adopt will always still hold rights to that adopt and is selling the rights to and not the character itself so in theory an adopt can be sold to multiple people to use but no one will ever own the adopt except the creator pretty much

If thats true then I feel like there's no point in buying something that you cant actually own and it sounds pretty fucked up to me as US copyright law is already corrupted in a way. I feel like more artists should just design their own characters instead of just adopting them so we won't have conflicts with a creator and be told off if I draw feral nsfw with a character I payed for. I'm happy that I have a close friend now and I can safely own her designs and be able to do whatever I want with them.

As someone who has really severe anxiety its very worrying and I can't be wrong for being paranoid in this regard.

In adoption sales the buyer isn’t buying the character, they’re buying the right to use it. The artist-creator still owns the copyright. Even though furries everywhere have been working under the assumption that everything transfers in the purchase including copyright. So in many cases an artist can legally “take back” the adoptable character from you, or let someone else use the character at the same time without your permission. But realistically they’d never do that because they wouldn’t ever get business from the fandom again.

One question I have for this lawyer guy is whether adoption artists can simply say “you’re buying the copyright here, this character is now yours not mine and I am not responsible for what you do with it” and have that be over with

US copyright law is just corrupted in general so its kinda fucked up not being able to own something that you have actually paid for.
I think the trick here is knowing what exactly it is you’re paying for. But I agree. The intellectual property system we have is severely flawed

the trick is also like,, dont buy adoptables that have rules above regarding trading, selling, and gifting the design itself

Well... that’s true but legal ownership is still a thing regardless of whether anything “above” those uses gets mentioned
