Wild North Online 2021 Story Competition

So, who fancies a story competition? (With prizes!)

The competition will follow the con theme – ‘Tails of the Seven Seas’. How you interpret this theme is up to you. Will you take us on a swashbuckling adventure in the age of sail? Will it be a story about pirates and their dastardly deeds, explorers setting course for far-off shores, or maybe naval sailors fighting for king and country? Perhaps you have a more modern tale in mind – with submarines or even ocean liners. Or something more historical – we’d certainly love a Viking story!

HOW TO ENTER
• Email your story to wildnorthuk[at]gmail.com
• Please put the words ‘Story Competition’ in the subject line
• Tell us which name we should refer to you by
• Any file format is fine, as long as we can read it

The closing date for entries is 11.59pm on Saturday 18 September.

Entries received after this date will not be included. If you have trouble entering, please let us know, ideally before the closing date.

RULES
• Maximum 750 words
• One entry per person
• No strong language
• No politics, hateful material, or controversial topics
• No copyrighted characters
• ‘Fantasy-style’ fighting and peril are fine – we’re expecting a few pirate-themed stories, after all. The minimum age for a Twitch stream is 13 years, and we could potentially have viewers of all ages. Think Redwall or Pirates of the Caribbean for the right level of peril. So nothing graphic or excessive please.

Your story should ‘mostly’ centre on anthropomorphic animals. Again, this is open to interpretation. Whether your animals talk, walk on two legs, or are a bit wilder in nature, we’d love to hear their stories.

If we feel your story could be edited to fit the rules, we will contact you to work something out.

LIVESTREAM
The stories will be read out during the livestream, and the judges will share their thoughts, before making their decision.

JUDGING
Stories will be judged on:
• Following the theme
• How well they're written
• Overall enjoyment

The judges will check stories for suitability. If they need to be amended, you’ll be informed.

Judges are independent from the Wild North team, and are free to make decisions as they see fit.

PRIZES
There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
- 1st place: £50 Waterstone’s voucher (or equivalent store if the winner is non-UK)
- 2nd place: a 2000-word custom story by Ziegenbock
- 3rd place: a 1000-word custom story by Ziegenbock
