This shouldn’t be this hard!

I’ve been doing some Patreon exclusives for a few months now but how do you feel about them being uploaded here after a few months? And this is mainly about the full color ones I put up teasers for here. Does that negate their exclusivity or is it common practice? I genuinely worry how people will react if I do that.
I’ve had some friends reassure me that it’s something a lot of artists do. But then what’s the appropriate time to wait to upload here?
I’ve been going back and forth on this for weeks now and something in my brain just keeps me from making a decision, like I’m letting down my patrons if I upload exclusives here.
In the meantime, I’d appreciate any input from you guys. I trust your opinions.
Thanks again, CC <3

It would be different if you announced in advance that they will be posted publicly after a certain amount of time. Which you could do for newer pictures.
Alternatively you could post the sketch of black and white versions publicly and keep the full color ones as Patreon exclusives.
Or you could post some publicly and keep others as Patreon exclusives.
The possibilities are vast.
In my opinion something like Patreon is a committent, a contract. While some or all of your Patreons might not care, some might. You set up the rules and under these rules they agreed to give you money. Changing the rules retroactively is (in my opinion) bad business behaviour.
You have the freedom to change the rules for the future and your Patreons have the freedom to react to those changes.
I'm a salesman by heart, so here is my point of view:
You can draw a certain amount of pictures each month. You want some steady income from Patreon, so you need incentives so people stay members. At the same time you need some advertising (i.e. Publicly posted pictures) to gain new members. By the way, it is proven that it is 10 times harder (or expensive) to gain new customers than to keep the old ones.
And lastly you want to keep accepting commissions?
There you go.
Divide your time in a way you are comfortable with and that supports your goals. Set up your Patreon rules accordingly. And don't forget to change things up if something doesn't work out.
The latter is the hard part. Staying with something that doesn't work hurts you, but changing rules all the time can also be bad.
And as Dreamfox suggested as well; you can always **change your rules** so the next pictures you draw in the future won't be labeled as exclusive anymore but maybe "timed exclusive" with a certain amount of months passing by before they are uploaded anywhere else. This varies greatly from Artist to artist.
A lot of Artists will only upload **lower quality** Pictures outside of Patreon and have HD versions exclsuive to Patreon.
Some also upload the **sketches and WIPs** to Patreon only so people can see your progress.
And if you really want to put your currently exclsuive pictures from Patreon to FA you can always **make a Poll** on Patreon to ask your Patreons if they are okay if you do so. By that you can also suggest a time frame 4, 6, 12 months... by doing so you also interact with your followers and can learn about their opinions^^
It gives an incentive to subscribe to your Patreon to those wanting to support you, while those who might not be able to afford it or are otherwise not subscribed receive more content from you overall. More publicly available content also means more visibility which means more people are aware of your art and Patreon, so it could increase subscribers too.
Ultimately I think that releasing more art to the public is a net positive for you as an artist and business.
Naturally there are some drawbacks too, mainly in how your patrons perceive it. Some may reduce their tiers, other lower tier member might drop out. I think that it will make the environment a bit more relaxed overall since there is a little less pressure on people to stay subscribed and makes it a more voluntary thing again. Overall I think there will be a short-term dip in revenue after a change like this, but in the long term this might prove to be more lucrative from the increased viewership you receive.
But also consider that most of your Patreon tiers are not just about the exclusivity, but the ability to make suggestions too, which is a big draw to keep in mind too.
As for how to go about it, I think that there is one important rule: Former Patreon exclusives should stay exclusive. Those were the rules when you made that artwork and a change of the rules should not work retroactively. If patrons think you should release any former artwork because it is that good and they think it should be shared, it is up to them to give the go-ahead on posting it.
When it comes to a timeframe for release, I’d suggest two to three months of delay to keep up the exclusivity for a while and make it feel like a proper reward for supporters, while keeping this change somewhat timely. If you put a year between drawing and release, the change you make today only comes about next year.
In conclusion, I’d say that timed exclusives are a good thing and they will definitely help you grow in the future. You should not release prior exclusives and only ones you draw from now on, unless there is a consensus among the patrons that you can release pieces.
Hope this helps to make up your mind a bit!
Also you can always keep some pics completely exclusive to patrons while releasing others after a timed exclusivity. Patrons can also get access to higher rez/larger versions. Several artists I know will post the base image publicly but the variations are patron exclusives.
I think it's good to keep releasing a healthy portion of your stuff publicly to show potential new patrons that you're still active and uploading stuff but generally exclusives are the way to go, at least for me.
I've actually been considering backing you when I'm going to re-evaluate my Patreon/Fanbox subscriptions for the next time and while I'd like to support some artists just for the sake of supporting them, in the end it mostly comes down to a cost vs. benefit analysis. Timed exclusivity is just no incentive imo at all. Even High Res. versions aren't a big incentive to me.
But you have to find out what you're most comfortable with. :)
