If you go into the piano roll, in you click the very last box in the option bar(looks like a grid) A bunch of options comes down, like 1/2 beat 1/3 beat, etc. if you choose the (none) option, it'll allow you to ignore the lines and manually edit a note to as short as you want. Just don't forget to change it back to whatever you want when you're inputting more notes.
Also in the piano roll, when you first open up something, in the bar you'll see the name of the instrument and then velocity.
The Velocity is actually a drop down menu, so what I do is I click on that, and then go down to channel volume, which will change the very bottom input box.
You can then draw in shapes to reflect the volume. If you left click and drag it will put in shapes that change with every cell, and if you right click drag it'll do a smooth line.
