But I wanted to get a sense from artists who already take commissions as to what it was like trying to get a foot in the door? What worked and what didn't to attract potential customers? (Granted that taking commissions is really an end goal, I'm not planning on doing it right now, after I get some more practice maybe :P)

Also, I'd still love to take requests up until I feel confident enough to start charging, so I'm looking for characters to draw again :P
In particular, unusual/complex characters are welcome (How often do you hear that?!) as well as uncommon species!

I TOOK MY VERY FIRST COMMISSION GUYS I'M SO EXCITED

Granted, it was for a friend, and it was originally going to be gratis because I needed another character to show off the YCH i'm working on (more on that later!) but she was so impressed with what I'd managed that she ended up paying me for the trouble! And I'm so glad for it aaaah it's just brightened my day immensely, my very biggest thanks to her :D

Yeah, it's gone now. I could rant and rave about the manager being rubbish or the conditions being atrocious, but in the end she decided I wasn't right for the position, and I agreed.
