Now where is the brake for that CPU?
Posted 3 years agoEven if the combination of a Ryzen 5800X and a Wraith Prism is a bit hot, it should be livable for a while? Well, kind of yes. If you don't mind the sound of a small jet engine under your desk as soon as the system has to do just about anything and the clock shoots up to 4.5 GHz. Fortunately hard-limiting the clock to a less ambitious level and turning off a few other automatic performance boosters does keep the noise down until I get around to upgrading the cooler while preserving acceptable performance. A 5600 might have been the more sensible choice...
End of an Era...
Posted 4 years agoJust found out that Blackberry is shutting off services for their legacy devices on January 4, 2022. I guess I should now seriously start to think about what to replace my BB Classic with.

Mainboard annoyance
Posted 5 years agoCMOS batteries are user replaceable for a good reason. Annoyingly, easy access to the battery on mine requires removal of the graphics card if it has a substantial cooler like essentially any gaming card of the last several years. By marketing, the reasonably current board is explicitly meant for gamers.

Computer transitions
Posted 9 years agoI am currently in a bit of a transition process, migrating from Windows 7 to ... Windows 7, but freshly installed on an SSD. Time for boot and software loading has definitely gone down but as I am still running the same other hardware, performance not limited by disk I/O should be about the same.
Despite the recent update to 12.18 I have also pretty much retired my old and loved Opera 12 in favour of Vivaldi, which has matured to a practically usable state. Bookmark handling is or at least feels still inferior, but it's good enough.
