Hurricane update
Posted 8 years agoWe survived the night, and came out much better that much of the county. We have power. Water is still shut off, but we planned for that. I haven't checked my home for power or flooding yet, but everything is fine at my parents house here. It's not over yet, though. We're still getting lots of wind, and Irma is directly west of us at this point, we we're still feeling the effects. Updates to come if anything significant happens.
Waiting out the hurricane
Posted 8 years agoWe're hunkered down and prepared to weather hurricane Irma as she makes her way up Florida. We expect the brunt of it to reach us later tonight and into tomorrow morning. I might be a bit silent for a while, but we don't think we'll lose power at this point, or at least for too long. Hoping for the best!
Published again!
Posted 8 years agoIn all the Anthrocon prep and excitement, I totally forgot to mention: I've got a second published credit to my name now! :D My short story, Lucid was accepted and published in Furplanet's Roar anthology, volume 8. The book's theme is paradise, and my story involves a young otter girl in a world of excitement and wonder... that cannot last. Check it out here: https://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=905
Back home from Anthrocon
Posted 8 years agoI've arrived home safe from Anthrocon, and had yet another wonderful time!
It seemed like far too long that I had the chance to hang out with a "crew" of friends like the good old days.
kiosutra and I got a chance to catch up, and we got to spend some time with a lot of other friends over the course of the convention. I sold four pieces in the Art Show for a nice profit, and in addition, I came back with the usual gamut of stuff from the Dealers Room and Artist Alley. Artwork, comics, a t-shirt, a full-size Anthrocon flag, and of course, commissioned work. Of the latter: Two new conbadges, one piece of gift art, and eleven commissions (ALL of which match a specific theme this year). A con report and the art uploads will come later on, but for now, time to wind down from the weekend and celebrate our nation's Independence Day.

Posted 8 years agoYikes, Anthrocon is next week! I still have artwork to do XD
Where are you staying?
The Westin.
What day are you getting there? How long are you going?
Scheduled to arrive Thursday and staying until Monday.
How are you traveling?
Banshee Airplane.
Who will you be rooming with?
Thus far,
kiosutra and
pandez
How is the best way to find you? Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
During regular con hours, I spend a lot of time walking around the Dealers Den and Artist Alley.
After the Den closes, I'm usually either in my hotel room or shuffling around the convention space, looking for things to capture my attention.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just say, "Hey Aelius!"
Do you have an artist table?
Not at Anthrocon - it's purely a spending/social con for me.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
The writing-central panels always sound helpful, and I'd like to check out the car show if they're still having it this year.
What do you look like? What is your gender?
Just an average-looking male. Look for my "Aelius" conbadges.
Are you nice?
I'm told I am.
Will you be suiting?
Nah, just my normal clothes.
Do you do free art?
Nope, sorry.
Can I talk to you?
Sure!
Can I touch you?
Why?
Can I visit your room?
I prefer you didn't, unless you were invited. A fennec needs a den to relax from the bustle of the convention and recharge.
Can I buy you drinks?
No thanks, I'm good.
Can I give you stuff?
Only if there's no catch!
Can I take your picture?
Certainly, just ask.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
How about a friendly handshake instead?
Will you be going to parties?
Highly doubtful unless they're sketchbook parties and/or I know most of the folks there.
Will you be performing?
Nah. Introvert
What/where will you be eating?
Any place with good food! A few common restaurants I go to are no longer there so I'll probably be checking out some new establishments.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Only if you're invited We often have groups that are limited in number, and I'm not usually the one organizing them.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
I don't really bring my sketchbook around nowadays, since I'm not selling and anyone with a smartphone can see my stuff online. That said, I'll likely have my portfolio in the room and in the Den/Alley for commission references so... sure, you can look, but just ask first.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
If I have one available and you'd like to, certainly! Again, just ask beforehand.
What's your favorite animal to draw?
All of them! :D Seriously, one of the main reasons I love furry is because there are animals involved, and I embrace any opportunity to draw 'em, both familiar and exotic.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
As always, to have a good time! I want to hang out with friends, get some commissions & comics, and enjoy the experience.

Flight of Passage at Disney World
Posted 8 years ago...is AWESOME.
Yesterday I got the chance to visit Disney World's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, where the new Pandora section (based on James Cameron's movie, Avatar) has only been open to general admission for a week so far. Me being a fan of the movie aside, the Imagineers went all out on this one. The section is gorgeous, and really matches the look and feel of Pandora. Of course, everyone is flocking to the new thrill ride, Flight of Passage, in which visitors can "link up" with an Avatar and fly a banshee.
I will admit, when it comes to thrill rides I tend to get a little timid. I don't like roller coasters (exception: the Test Track at Epcot I totally love), though I'm fine with simulator rides like Star Tours and Soarin'. I had heard Flight of Passage was a lot like those two, but way more intense. Well, the banshee scenes in the movie were spectacular, and I wanted to experience those. All the reviewers were praising the ride, so given how much I loved the other two simulator rides, I figured I could handle something a little more extreme. I resolved to put aside that "roller coaster" timidity and link up. Lacking a FastPass, I had to get up at 5am just to get to the park in time to get a decent spot in line. My years of prepping for the Dealers Den line at Anthrocon ensured that was no problem :p
The line for the ride is long and winding, befitting of the multi-hour waiting times that occur later in the day. Even so, there's plenty to look at as you're waiting. As early as I'd arrived, I hardly had a chance to stop and look, however. No biggie, it meant I could fly sooner!
And fly I did.
The flight is truly amazing! It was definitely more extreme than the other sim rides above, complete with a couple of stomach-dropping moments (the main reason I don't like coasters :p ), but the sheer amount of immersion was well worth it. The 3D is top-notch, better than any other I've seen (no double-vision for me on this one!), and there are plenty of sensory effects to give you that feeling of actually being there, like mist-sprays and grass smells. Even the "bike" seat you straddle for the ride pulsates to simulate your banshee breathing right under you. I just love that detail; it really drives home your avatar bonding with his/her banshee as the rite intends. The ride was about four minutes, but of course it felt way too short. Had the waiting times afterword not been so long I definitely would've done it again. Yes, even with those uncomfortable stomach-drop moments that keep me away from roller coasters, I want to fly again. Immersion makes the exception ;p Take it from me, don't spoil it by watching YouTube videos of the simulation. Coming in fresh is a way better experience!
The Na'vi River Journey, a slower flume ride akin to It's A Small World, is also neat, and a good way to come down after the thrill of Flight. I gotta say, animatronics have come a long way. The Na'vi shaman at the end looks extremely real, even the face (which is where, thanks to the uncanny valley, a lot of animatronics fall short at).
The rest of Animal Kingdom is of course amazing, but Flight of Passage was a definite highlight. Such a shame that Windtraders had adopted out all of those neat "pet shoulder banshee" toys. I had my heart set on getting one coming in, but alas, it was not meant to be.
Maybe I can swing another trip around Christmas holiday and fly again...

The new Sonic Forces character is "you"
Posted 8 years agoThe minute I saw that you can custom-create your own character to play as in the upcoming Sonic Forces game, I knew the fandom (Sonic and Furry) would be overwhelmed with a deluge of hastily-made cookie-cutter OCs. Of course, countless other folks see it coming too, and you know what? I welcome it. Because let's face it, the fandoms have been chock full of OCs since the very beginning. It's nothing new. All Forces will do is, for the first time, give creators a chance to actually fulfill their fantasy of playing as their character in an official canonized Sonic game. Heck, I'm looking forward to trying it out myself!
As I said, fans have been creating their own OCs since day one. I'm proof of it; way back in the early 90's when Sonic 2 came out and I finally got a Genesis of my own, I had created some "copycat" hedgehogs that were basically color-swapped Sonics that I would fantasize going on adventures with Sonic. I got into the SatAM cartoon series and Archie comics (I even had not one, but TWO of my fan letters printed in the comic and answered by Sonic), further inspiring me with the creation of my very first fursona as a Freedom Fighter among Sonic, Sally, and the others. It was where I first tried out writing as a serious hobby, as gratuitous self-insertion fanfic. When we got internet access and I discovered a plethora of Sonic fansites complete with Freedom Fighter Profiles (basically lists of OCs of people who, like me, had their own characters created for the series), I wanted to be a part of them. It was that very thing that inspired me to take up art again; the desire to be one of these creators, complete with awesome artwork to call my own.
So yes, after thoroughly enjoying Sonic Generations, I was already planning to buy Sonic Forces. The ability to create a character of my very own to play as and interact with the characters in the game is an awesome bonus that I'll leap for. Because I know exactly what it's like to have such an opportunity after devoting so much effort to put my own personal touch on a series that I love, and I expect this to further inspire more creators just like the original games inspired me all those years ago. Sure, there will be plenty that are mary/gary stus and blatant rip-offs, but honestly, that's how it's been since the franchise began. It's how a lot of creators got their start. It's how I got mine back when I was nine.

Furry Weekend Atlanta aftermath
Posted 8 years agoA bit late in posting, but the phrase "Better late than never" fits my FWA experience this year quite well :p
Due to difficulties getting enough time off work, I arrived at the convention Friday evening, missing an entire day of the convention. However, even with only two days to enjoy it I had a truly wonderful time! Met a lot of old friends I haven't been able to hang out with all year, and got some time in the Alley as well (will hopefully have some drawings to show off soon). Plus, the theme for this year was video games! I've been a gamer since the 80's, and was happy to discover a massive video game room/arcade this year. Of course it was over too soon, but it's made me look forward to FWA '18 all the more, and next time, I plan to arrive on Wednesday at the latest XD
Oh! And speaking of FWA 2018, I absolutely love the theme they picked: Galactic Gunslingers. Yes, a blend of Western and Sci-Fi, a la Cowboy Bebop (one of my favorite animes) and Firefly (one of my favorite live-action shows), among other cowboy-cyberpunk aesthetics. I can't wait to see how FWA uses this theme next year; they've always done a magnificent job going all out to celebrate previous years' themes, more so than any other con I've ever been to. It's inspired me to get involved in some way, and I'm already developing an associated story with a fennec fox and rabbit (FWA mascot species) to match and use in some way as the convention approaches next year.
First, however... Anthrocon is a few months away, and I have every intention of spending as much time in Pittsburgh as I can...

Slight setback for FWA...
Posted 8 years agoDue to difficulty getting enough time off, it looks like I'll be arriving at FWA on Friday evening. While I regret I'll miss out on an entire day's activities, I still hope to make the most of the rest of the weekend! Catch me in the Alley on Saturday and Sunday, and keep an eye on my Twitter (Aelius24) for notifications and updates.
Furry Weekend Atlanta 2017 meme!
Posted 8 years agoThe Furry Weekend Atlanta Meme
FWA is just three weeks away! As usual I plan to grab a spot in the Artist Alley on Saturday and Sunday, and possibly Friday if I get bored and find an open seat. Just keep an eye on my Twitter for announcements - @ aelius24
And now... the convention meme:
Where are you staying?
Back in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.
What day are you getting there? How long are you going?
Should be arriving Thursday afternoon and staying until Sunday evening.
How are you traveling?
Car.
Who will you be rooming with?
*pending confirmation*
How is the best way to find you? Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
I spend a lot of time walking around the Dealers Den and Artist Alley. I'll even be selling commissions in the Alley!
After the Den closes and I need a break from Alley stuff, I'm usually either in my hotel room or shuffling around the lobby levels, maybe hanging out in one of the lounges if there's space. Or in a restaurant.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just say, "Hey Aelius!"
Do you have an artist table?
I intend to have an Alley table on Saturday and Sunday, and possibly Friday. Follow my Twitter feed for announcements.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
The writing-central panels always sound helpful.
What do you look like? What is your gender?
Reposting from last year: I am male, and fairly average-looking at that. Just look for my "Aelius" conbadges and likely a video-game-related shirt.

Any place with good food! Most likely the Peachtree Mall's food court during the day.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Only if you're invited We often have groups that are limited in number, and I'm not usually the one organizing them.

Furry Weekend Atlanta, inbound!
Posted 8 years agoJust registered to Furry Weekend Atlanta 2017. The theme this year, video games, is absolutely my thing :D FWA's staff have always done a wonderful job actually utilizing their convention themes, so I look forward to see how they play with it this year. No doubt the Video Game Room will be getting some careful attention.
I look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones as always! Definitely planning to set up a table in the Artist Alley, too.
So who else is attending this year? Anybody on the fence or looking for roommates?

Oops....
Posted 9 years agoSo I've been working on Auran Legend since 2012. Finally finished it, completed edits, and submitted to a publisher last November.
Just last night I realized there was an enormous continuity error right at the end that somehow slipped past all the edits.
I am ashamed... XD

Dreamkeepers OC Tourney, round 1!
Posted 9 years agoAnd so my character Nimbus is squaring off against his first opponent in the tourney! You can find the match-up here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/22230113/ I'd encourage you to vote for who you think made the best entry, but you know I'm gonna also play bias and ask you to vote for Nimbus :p Wish me luck!
Anybody attending Vancoufur this year?
Posted 9 years agoHappy New Year, everybody! Hope you guys had a wonderful holiday ^_^
Is anyone, by chance, attending Vancoufur this year? If so, I have a favor to ask. I'm hoping to get one of the Atlantis themed t-shirts from last year's convention. They told me they still have some shirts available, but cannot ship by mail - in-person pick-up only. I'm wondering if I could pay someone to grab a shirt for me and ship it to me? I'll pay for the shirt and shipping, of course. And, if there are any other Atlantis themed paraphernalia available, like a conbook, I would like that, as well. Atlantis is my absolute favorite mythical setting and though I'm bummed I missed a furry con around it, I would like to snag some related gear at the very least. Let me know if you or someone you know and trust is attending and willing to do this for me, and I'll set up the details.
Thanks, and let's have a great 2017!
Back from MFF
Posted 9 years agoOkay, technically I got back yesterday, but between finishing my semester finals and being awake for roughly fourty-six hours (more on that later), I was a bit preoccupied :p No worries though... I'm fine and MFF was a blast. It was wonderful going back and seeing everyone. Plus, I got some commission sales!
Working on a Con Report to be posted later this week, and I've finally got back into a drawing groove thanks to those commissions. Until then, hope everyone has a great week!
... no I didn't stay awake that long during the convention - that came afterwards.

Midwest FurFest time!
Posted 9 years agoMFF is just around the corner! As in previous years, I plan to hop into the Artist Alley on Saturday and possibly Sunday, so keep an eye on my Twitter (aelius24). I shall announce my presence ;)
And now here's the convention meme thingie:
Where are you staying?
I'll be in the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.
What day are you getting there? How long are you going?
I'll be arriving late Thursday and staying until Sunday evening.
How are you traveling?
Airplane.
Who will you be rooming with?
nauta and
kiosutra (who is currently doing art preorders for the Alley! Check 'im out here: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/7942801/ )
How is the best way to find you? Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
I spend a lot of time walking around the Dealers Den and Artist Alley. On Saturday and possibly Sunday, I plan to snag a table in the Alley!
After they close, I'm either in my hotel room or shuffling around the lobby levels, maybe hanging out in one of the lounges if there's space. Or in a restaurant.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just say, "Hey Aelius!"
Do you have an artist table?
As stated above, I intend to have an Alley table on Saturday and Sunday. Follow my Twitter feed for announcements.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I'm always interested in writing-central panels, so I may catch some of those.
What do you look like? What is your gender?
As stated in previous convention memes, I am male, and fairly average-looking at that. Just look for my "Aelius" conbadges and a video-game-related shirt.
Are you nice?
I've been told I am, so I'm willing to believe that ^_^.
Will you be suiting?
Nah, just my normal clothes.
Do you do free art?
Nope, sorry.
Can I talk to you?
Of course!
Can I touch you?
Why?
Can I visit your room?
I'd rather you didn't, unless you were invited. A fennec needs a den to relax from the bustle of the convention and recharge.
Can I buy you drinks?
Sure, as long as it's unopened (no booze, please).
Can I give you stuff?
Only if there's no catch
Can I take your picture?
Certainly, just ask.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
How about a friendly handshake instead?
Will you be going to parties?
Highly doubtful unless they're sketchbook parties and I know some folks there.
Will you be performing?
Nah. Introvert
What/where will you be eating?
Any place with good food! I tend to stay around the hotel at this con, so there's a good chance I'll be around O'H and Red Bar. Oh, and I make a habit to visit Giordano's at least once every con.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Only if you're invited We often have groups that are limited in number, and I'm not usually the one organizing them.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Sure, just ask first.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
See above response.
What's your favorite animal to draw?
All of them! Seriously, one of the main reasons I love furry is because there are animals involved, and I embrace any opportunity to draw 'em, both familiar and exotic.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To have a good time, most of all. I want to hang out with friends, get some commissions & comics, and enjoy the experience.

Off to the Publisher
Posted 9 years agoAnd so I've finally made that step. I have submitted my first novel, Auran Legend, to a publisher for consideration. I'm so excited... and so nervous! Wish me luck, folks!
A year older, and plenty more left to do
Posted 9 years agoSo yesterday was my birthday, and I thought it was neat how it was on the first day of Furry Book Month considering the fact I love furry books and I'm currently working on my own furry novel, which will hopefully be a part of a future year's Furry Book Month. I've got my sights set on a publisher that's recently opened their slushpile, and Auran Legend is just a few re-written scenes away from being complete.
That would partially explain the lack of art and updates here. Not only have I been focusing purely on writing since Anthrocon ended, but during this time I have also began a completely new job and moved to another town to boot. Plus I have since returned to school to get a specialist's degree to add to my Master's, so there's been a lot going on. I'm managing, though. I have high hopes for the novel project, the second I've ever started, and have every intention to continue writing even with school and the new job going on. Art may be put on hold until MFF or so, but I'll still be checking here every once in a while.

CON REPORT: Anthrocon 2016
Posted 9 years agoA month late, but still in July! It's been very busy for me lately but thankfully I managed to find a moment of peace to get this typed out and ready to post. Enjoy!
CON REPORT: Anthrocon 2016 “Roaring Twenty”
For Anthrocon, it’s their 20th anniversary. For me, it’s thirteen straight years attending! I’m not superstitious, but a few circumstances leading up to the con almost fell into “unlucky” territory, but instead I encountered plenty of close calls to reverse my fortunes. And the con itself? It went wonderfully. In fact, it seemed far more active for me than previous years; a lack of the typical lulls I’ve had in previous years, and it made for a wonderful weekend.
It began, however, with an added step in that a couple days before the convention: I would be visiting my longtime friend Jake Bunny in Columbus prior to the convention.
Tuesday—
In the past I’ve driven up to Atlanta to stay a night with family, since they live much closer to Hartsfield-Jackson than I do and it beats getting up at 2am to drive up I-75 and struggling to stay awake during the whole monotonous road trip. This year, however, Jake would be picking me up from the airport in the afternoon, so I could spend Monday doing all the prep work necessary for the con and then drive up to Atlanta at a more reasonable hour on the day of my flight.
I arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare and, despite an odd false positive with the TSA security scanner, went through the rest with no hassle and had a chance to grab some lunch before my flight.
Upon arriving in Columbus, Jake informed me that my flight just barely missed a huge storm system that would’ve delayed my flight by at least an hour. Reversal of fortune number two!
After dropping off my luggage at Jake’s apartment (I got to meet his pet rabbit Ash!), we spent the rest of the afternoon walking through an arts district where we met up with a friend of his who owned her own art gallery. Then stopped at a soda shop. Also neat: a vintage toy shop with some very cool items from a multitude of eras. Memories galore. It seemed like every few moments one of us said, “Hey, I remember these!” It also made me remember I have a duffel bag at home full of old Star Wars toys I could sell here. I made a note to check up on this later. After that, we went to an arcade bar, and that’s exactly what you think it is. A barcade. Video arcade games galore, and all free to play (the bar’s income is from drinks, not games). How fitting, coming from a vintage toy store that reminded us of our childhood play trends only to wind up in an arcade where we’re further reminded of all the video games we once played years ago. After that came dinner at a gourmet hot dog place with some really good options all around.
Wednesday—
Today Jake and I had the chance to do something I’ve been wanting to do for years: visit the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force! It was just a quick drive to Dayton where we marveled at five enormous hangars worth of military aviation history. There were way too many planes to name here, but among the highlights…
First and foremost, it was great to see a legitimate, flight-ready SR-71 Blackbird up close with my own two eyes. I am among the many who have admired the plane for years, and getting to see it in person was awesome. Even more so was knowing that, save for a bit of age-related wear, the one here could literally be fueled up and ready to fly. She’s one of the few airframes that had not been gutted for display.
Also neat was seeing just how massive some of those planes are, like the B-52 Stratofortress and the legendary XB-70 Valkyrie. On a similar note, being able to see all those old prop-driven warbirds like the B-17 in person was cool, too. All those gun stations! I also did not expect to see an actual YF-23 Black Widow prototype that once competed against what would eventually become the F-22 Raptor for Air Force production. I love both planes for similar reasons, and relished the opportunity to see each of them on the same day.
After the museum, we grabbed a fast food lunch and then made a stop by the local Rabbit Rescue to get some supplies for Ash. All those little bunnies everywhere, I was surrounded by adorableness…
Finishing up there, we returned to the apartment and hung around there for the rest of the afternoon.
Thursday—
There was no rush to get up. Convention festivities don’t begin until late in the afternoon and hardly anything goes on before then. Plus, we would be waiting to pick up another local fur to bring to the con since he needed a ride.
We took our time getting ready and headed out to pick him up, then it was off to Pittsburgh!
Traffic wasn’t too bad, especially with Jake’s GPS steering us away from some collisions/road work areas, and before we knew it, we had reached the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
It was always neat going through there; we’re basically traveling right through a mountain, and part of a range of mountains and trees that blocked view of the city’s skyscrapers to anyone arriving from the west. Then, after emerging from said tunnel, the entire city suddenly fills your view. Jake was describing it to our other carpooler and equated it to arriving in Zootopia since it’s all right there at once after seeing nothing but trees beforehand. Fitting; we’re attending a furry con after all, it might as well be Zootopia.
And of course, that inspired me to pull up my smartphone and cue Try Everything. I nailed the timing perfectly; starting the song right as we exited the tunnel. What better way to begin a furry convention vacation?
We arrived at the parking garage, dropped off our carpooler, and headed to the Westin to check in. I managed to snag a double-bed room reservation this year. To our fortune there was just one left, and it was only on the sixth floor! A quick run up the stairs and we had arrived.
Registration was already going on, so I headed over to the convention center to get my badge and the usual bag-o-goodies. We caught Flops there and stopped for a quick chat, then I excused myself to go back to the room and get my submissions for the Art Show, since set up was going on and I found out they would be closing in less than an hour.
Got my art hung and completed Art Show registration with just five minutes to spare! After that… I was hungry.
In the mood for gyros (they’ve become a staple now whenever I attend), I headed into Bombay across the street from the hotel and got dinner. However, before I could bring my food back up to the room, my roomie for the con, Chux, had just arrived. I helped him carry his stuff up and get settled into the room.
Jake arrived afterwards and was able to arrange to stay for the convention as well. Hooray! Roomie number two, making us a trio.
Prior to leaving Columbus, Jake wasn’t sure if he would be able to attend but packed some luggage just in case, so while Chux remained in the room to unpack I accompanied Jake back to his car to get his gear. We made a quick stop at a nearby 7-11 for drinks then returned to the hotel, safe and sound.
Friday—
Friday morning at a furry convention, so my usual routine: wake up early, shower, gear up, leave for breakfast with Den gear in tow. The Brown Bag deli I used to eat breakfast at had closed down, so instead I headed over to Furnando’s to see what options were available. Some good ones, in fact! Grabbed a breakfast sandwich to go and made my way to the Convention Center, which had not yet opened up. When it did, I snagged the third spot in the Sponsor line. Jake arrived later on and kept me company as we waited for it to open.
Just like in years before, it was a flurry of meeting artists, commissioning artists, buying art and comics, and more socializing with people I had not seen in a year or more. It was rather interesting coming into this con remembering how many people that I would hang out with and speak to that used to attend, but no longer do. And yet, hours went by and I realized there were people here, still attending, that I still haven’t said hi to yet. It’s made me wonder if the lack of old familiar faces is being replaced by new ones I meet in recent years. There are definitely a number of folks I’ve only met in the past year or three. Chux, for example, I first met at MFF half a year ago and here I am now rooming with him! He’s a great roomie, by the way. I caught him walking around in suit from time to time.
I grabbed a late lunch at Bombay Gyros with Jake, then we headed back to the Den to mill about for a bit.
As closing time for the Den rolled in, I returned to the room to rest. Timed it perfectly, too. Just as I walked into the room I looked outside and, through the shining rays of the distant setting sun, was a downpour. A beautiful contrast and I enjoyed it without getting wet.
Jake arrived soon after and we relaxed for a while. I took the opportunity to look at some of the portfolios and comics I had bought.
There was a writing panel coming up that focused on action scenes, so I headed over to the Westin to attend. My stories often tend to be action-heavy, so I figured this would be a useful panel. I found that Ocean Tigrox, editor of Inhuman Acts (which I have a story in!) was one of the panelists. He even had me autograph his copy! Made me realize I didn’t even think to bring my own copy for him and any of the other attending authors to sign. Next year, perhaps…
The panel went off well, and right afterwards it was time for the Artist reception over in the Art Show, so I headed downstairs to join with the others in checking out this year’s works. No bids on my art, but there were a lot of great examples around as usual.
It’s also a great place to meet up with others that I had not seen yet, particularly in the crowds and bustle of the Den. I caught Indigo, Kyote, and Jen Kiwi here and said hi. Soon after, Kalahari and Aleutia found me and we were able to hang out for a bit while perusing art.
Afterwards, I headed out and met up with Jake at the Dance, where we got to see the neat new laser rigs that Chux had set up. We also stopped by the Whose Lion panel for a few minutes before leaving for the hotel.
Jake grabbed a quick dinner from Bombay, but I was already filled up on hor d’oeuvres from the Artist reception so I opted out.
Returned to the hotel room, where Jake and I chatted with Chux and Tiptoe for the rest of the night.
Saturday—
Another early rise. There were a couple artists I missed out on yesterday that I wanted to commission, so I repeated my routine and got the fourth spot in the Den line this morning.
Once it opened, I collected commissions, chatted with some folks, and generally wandered around. I found Commander Kitsune as well and we were able to strike up a pleasant chat. Soon after I came across Kalahari and Aleutia and joined them for a bit as they made their Den run. Even got to meet Neggar, the creator of the newly-released Franko comic.
Later on after dropping recent purchases off in the room, I returned to the Convention Center to find the local police had already cordoned off the street through it and nearby in preparation for the fursuit parade, which would be going outside once again after last year’s amazing public response. I snagged a hot dog from the street vendor on the corner then made my way back inside.
I chatted with a few more artists here and there, then found Jake right as the parade began. Once again I was in the middle of the Den and, with the parade going through, was limited in my options of where to go next (not that I minded, of course. The parade is always fun to watch). Since we were on the same row that the parade was moving through, we slid into the Furry Dakimakura booth to hang out as it passed by, getting a chance to chat with the vendors in the process.
Jake and I then slipped out through the row and made our way to the Artist Alley through the rear door, where we came across Lyenuv and had another fun chat.
After the parade began winding down (we saw Chux!), we headed into the Art Show to peruse this year’s various works together, as we often did in the past. Always nice to bounce opinions and critiques off one another. Oh, and one of my pieces had a bid!
We split after that, as Jake had to go meet with someone. I remained in the Den a bit longer to hang around, then headed out prior to closing and prepared for the usual “Saturday Lull.” This is often a time on Saturdays when the day is coming to a close, but it’s still too early for night activities, and the realization hits that tomorrow will be Sunday, the last day of the con. Not much going on yet as everyone returns from the Den and hasn’t figured out what to do next. This year, however, I seemed to avoid the lull. I found Kalahari and Aleutia just outside the Den and hung out with them for a while, then Commander Kitsune, Neggar, and Jake showed up as well.
We spent quite a while there chatting amongst ourselves, until our appetites got the better of us. From there, we went our separate ways for the evening. I went with Jake and another budding artist over to Sharp Edge, where Chux soon joined us to eat and had further opportunities to practice a variety of character voices at the table as we waited for our food.
After we finished, I was in the mood for some ice cream and Ben & Jerry’s was on the way back… however it was completely packed. I decided not to wait and instead grabbed an ice cream bar from the Kwik-E-Mart across from the hotel.
Jake, Chux, and I returned to our room and were soon joined by Tiptoe and Syn. Being that Jake and Tiptoe are both racers and I’m a car fan, we turned the TV to the Coke Zero 400 as we spent the rest of the night chatting and doing a little bit of artwork. Fittingly, after the race was over we caught a couple episodes of Jay Leno’s Garage.
As the night wore on, Tiptoe and Syn had to head back out. Jake, Chux, and I weren’t ready to turn in just yet. Jake and I headed out to the convention center and walked around, seeing the roof and its view of the Steel City skyline, as well as some of the artwork decorating the convention center halls. After making our way around through, we returned to the function areas and checked out the dance, where Chux was back on the lasers.
I hadn’t initially planned to stay all the way to the end, but I’m glad I did. It was the final dance of the con, on its twentieth anniversary, and it flowed into an amazing end. I loved the energy all around it was really neat to experience it on such an occasion. A great way to cap off the night, and the anniversary!
After the dance ended and the convention center closed, the three of us (along with a number of con-goers) headed back out. It was past 2am, but we still wanted to hang around a bit longer. Maybe that awesome dance end gave us a boost. We headed down to the waterfront, a spot that none of us had visited yet in all the years Anthrocon has been at Pittsburgh. There was a fairly sizeable crowd there, but with plenty of space. We chilled near the water for a bit, and then decided it was time to return to the room.
Sunday—
Not so early of a rise this morning, since there wasn’t much to rush for today and we had stayed up pretty late last night… or early this morning.
We took our time getting ready and sat down for breakfast together at Furnando’s. After that, Chux went to get ready for suiting while Jake and I hung out in the Dealer’s Den line until opening, which didn’t take very long.
In the Den itself, I picked up the remainder of my commissions and bought an art print from Diana Stein. Breakfast had carried me through noon so I didn’t break for lunch until around two or so when NightEyes caught up with me and invited me to lunch with Ocean, Slipwolf, and some other fellow furry writers. I jumped for the opportunity. We went to TenPenny and had a good time there. It was neat that they even served barbeque pulled pork.
I returned to the Den afterwards and checked my artwork out from the Art Show. Five pieces total sold this year; not bad! I could easily fit the remainder in my carry-on. The rest of my time there was spent conversing with various friends and saying my goodbyes as the Den wound down to a close.
After the Den closed I returned to the room to rest. Since my flight out would not be until tomorrow, I let myself relax today. Even though post-con depression was already present (how could it not be?), it was good to reflect on the fun I had so far. And besides, there were still more hours left to do stuff!
Jake and Chux arrived before long and after they spent some time resting themselves, got hungry. We headed downstairs and, with Jake hankering for a burger, chose Bill’s right inside the hotel. I was still rather full since I had eaten lunch so late, so I chose dessert. It turned out they were serving a “furry special.” It was a strawberry milkshake with gummy bears mixed in and topped with cotton candy. Delicious!
We returned to the room afterward to let our food settle while watching a gorgeous sunset behind the skyline.
Jake and I went back downstairs to go for a swim while Chux got his suit ready for more fursuiting adventures.
It had been a while since I swam at the Westin, but it felt so good to be in the water again. I’ve no doubt that if my fursona wasn’t a fennec fox, I would totally be an otter. I love water and it was a very relaxing experience. We swam casual laps across the pool while chatting for a while.
Back in the room, I began packing my bag for my flight out tomorrow. Chux suited up and the three of us went back downstairs to spend the rest of our con experience amidst fellow furries. Went from the hotel lobby over to the Zoo, it having returned to the Allegheny Ballroom, and hung out there with Onnanoko and her crew. While there I got to create a drawing in Chux’s tiny little sketchbook. The theme appeared to be the alphabet, and the next available page was “G.” Perfect. I sketched out a lovely headshot of Gazelle herself. Been wanting to draw her… Luckily I had plenty of reference images in my tablet thanks to a hefty folder chock full of Zootopia art (concept art, production art, and fanart). Tiptoe also briefly stopped by the table in suit.
We stayed there until closing, just like last year. After midnight… the convention was completely over. We headed back upstairs to sleep.
Monday—
My flight out wasn’t until after noon, so we slept in this morning for obvious reasons.
Leisurely morning routine and breakfast; Furnando’s for me and Starbucks for Jake. We ate in the room and I finished packing.
After checking out, we headed to the parking lot, loaded up, and drove out. I then realized I could not find my sunglasses. Jake would be dropping me off at the airport and it was too close to departure time to return to the hotel and wait for a room search (especially with the rest of the convention checking out and likely doing the same), so I left a message with lost-and-found and hoped for the best.
Arrived at the airport. We said our goodbyes and I was off to my terminal. Another odd false positive with the TSA scanner (unlucky), but no hassle or incident this time, either (lucky). I had time to grab a smoothie before it was time to fly out, and that’s when I got a call from the Westin notifying me they did not find my sunglasses. Luckily, I would learn a few days later I had left them in Jake’s car, so they’re found after all! One last “unlucky-to-lucky” reversal for the convention…
The flights out were fine. In fact, my departure got to leave early thanks to everyone arriving and settling in so fast.
The drive home was also fine, save for a bit of fatigue. I still wish the con could last longer, of course. Even so, this was a unique experience since I got to spend some time with Jake outside of a convention, the first we’ve done in… ever, actually. Known each other for over ten years and only now hung out in a “regular” setting.
It was a great experience overall, a great twentieth anniversary for the con, and makes me look forward to Midwest Furfest in December.

Back from Anthrocon!
Posted 9 years agoAs the title might imply, I have safely returned from Anthrocon 2016!
I had a wonderful time, and it seemed far more active than some of my previous years attended, in spite of my initial reluctance. As always, the commission batch will be uploaded soon, as well as my usual lengthy con report.
Until then, hope everyone has a happy Independence Day!

Anthrocon 2016 meme
Posted 9 years agoAnthrocon 2016 is just a few days away, so here's my meme-thing!
Where are you staying?
The Westin
What day are you getting there? How long are you going?
I'll be arriving Thursday and staying until Monday.
How are you traveling?
Car, then plane, then car, then plane.
Who will you be rooming with?
Right now it's just me and
astrosquirrel, so far
How is the best way to find you? Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
I spend a lot of time walking around the Dealers Den and Artist Alley. After they close, I'm either in my hotel room or the Zoo, or occasionally in a nearby restaurant. I try not to stray too far from the hotel since I'm not comfortable walking around a city by myself.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
To get my attention, just say, "Hey Aelius!"
Do you have an artist table?
Nope, AC is purely a social con for me.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I'm always interested in writing-central panels, so I may catch some of those.
What do you look like? What is your gender?
I am male, and fairly average-looking at that. Just look for my "Aelius" conbadges and likely a video-game-related shirt.
Are you nice?
I'm under the assumption that I am, based on what people tell me.
Will you be suiting?
Nah, just my normal clothes.
Do you do free art?
Nope, sorry.
Can I talk to you?
Of course!
Can I touch you?
Um... what for?
Can I visit your room?
I'd rather you didn't, unless you were invited. A fennec needs a den to relax from the bustle of the convention and recharge.
Can I buy you drinks?
Nah, I'm good, thanks.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Only if you're invited We often have groups that are limited in number, and I'm not usually the one organizing them.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Sure, just ask first.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
See above response.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To have a good time, most of all. I want to hang out with friends, get some commissions & comics, and enjoy the experience.

Anthrocon Update
Posted 9 years agoMy chances of attending have gone up. I've found a roommie, yay! However, I'm still trying to bring expenses down so I continue to seek others. I figured I would post here first in hopes to getting someone I'm familiar with before braving the wilds of the Anthrocon forums.
So my question remains, is anyone here still seeking a room, or a transfer to the Westin? With three people, the cost would be $278 each for the whole event, Thursday to Monday. With four people, it goes down to $209 each.

All alone at Anthrocon...
Posted 9 years agoWell, my roommates at Anthrocon had to back out so that leaves me alone in one very expensive room... by myself...
Asking for roommates is easy enough at a con as big as this, but the more pressing matter is the fact I'll have no one I know personally to hang out with in the room, after the events of the day wind down, which makes me wonder if it's worth attending at all.
In an effort to make the trip worthwhile (because really, after how stressful work has been I NEED a vacation with some social time among friends), there are a couple of options available.
Option one: Does anybody here need an extra roommate? I'm willing to cancel my room and hop into another, OR...
Option two: Is anyone either looking for a room or looking for a DIFFERENT room? I snagged a double-bed room at the Westin with a low floor request (which they almost always honor), so if you would've had space if it weren't for the fact you have a king room, or if you just want a room at a closer hotel, this option is for you. Given the proximity to the convention center I'd kinda prefer this, but I can be flexible.
Seeing as this is a major social event and I'm seeking social interaction while still being an introvert, priority will be given to those I know personally, or maybe those they recommend to me. I cannot guarantee whether it'll work out, but... well, I've got a little less than two weeks to decide. If it doesn't, I'll post here with an offer to transfer my room reservation.
Who wants to help a buddy out?
