Game Update 1
Posted 11 years agoI'mma write these to hopefully keep myself motivated. If they're annoying, feel free to tell me!
So! Progress report! Basic physics integrated. Gravity, being able to walk on surfaces without... rocketing into the sky... (actually happened once... maybe twice).
Currently the main character is a circle and all the platforms are hideous blue blocks! Great start! I can just feel the backstory!
I'm currently trying to decide on a jump style. The obvious choice is a button devoted to jumping, but another style involves letting the character jump automatically when moving at a certain speed off a platform, sorta like Zelda. I could also prevent the character from walking off the platform entirely, sorta like Resident Evil where you have to press a button to do a sort of canned jump animation. Currently messing around with each. They all seem to work well for different things.
So next step is to start spriting! The best and worst part. :D

I'm Making a Video Game

Work on my video game. Oh yeah! Hi, I'm Aerith. I make video games. Actually... fun fact, that was my main skill before coming to FA. But I figured until I improved on drawing and concepts, making a good game would have been difficult.
o..o So yes! I have made video games before. 2D platformers are my specialty, but I'm working on making it less about the... "platforming" and more about the exploration and the journey (For example I'm considering dropping the jump button). Just because a game runs 2-dimensionally doesn't mean that the gameplay ought to be set in stone.
My goal is for it to heavily emphasize exploration, kind of like when you go out into Hyrule Field for the first time, or get off the boat in Morrowind. That being said, a big area is not what I mean. I just want to have plenty of places to go and plenty of things to do in them. There's nothing worse than infinite space with nothing in it, haha. The game will be a solo experience, and I kinda want the player to feel lonely, possibly even scared. The main character will not be a valiant knight, or even human for that matter. It's a big world out there, full of mystery and danger. :)

Story Time with Aerith!

So, for those who think I'm dead, guess what? Full time work. So yes you were partially correct. Speaking of work, I have a bit of a story to tell!!
So I'm working the till in the garden. We've got really dark clouds rolling in, so nobody wants to be out there (except me). So there I am, alone, breathing in the fresh air and overall havin' a good time. A customer comes up to me and tells me that a bunch of plants are knocked over in the next section, and that I ought to go put them upright before they die. I thank him and tell him I'll call someone and that I can't leave my till. I ring through a customer on the till, and then I catch a glance at some guy way in the back of the garden. He seemed to be trying to look over stuff, maybe into the parking lot or something. But in my action-oriented mind he was a THIEF looking to make a BREAK.
He parked his cart in the next aisle over and walked back into the store. Because I was alone for a second again, I went to check out the cart... A combo drill kit, some other tool thing... all expensive shit. I think they said $700 worth. So I was like "I WAS RIGHT" nabbed the cart and wheeled it in behind my till, then hid it under cardboard boxes. Eventually the first dude comes back like... 30-40 minutes later, saying that the plants are still knocked over. Really, if it's that big of a deal to you, pick 'em up yourself, I'm too busy being a HERO.
XD Anyway, I tell him thanks, and to have a great day. He says "oh I will, you have no idea". Creeeeeeeeeepy. And then I see him get into a van... with the person who planted the cart!! THE PLOT THICKENS. He was trying to get me away from the till to fix up some plants (that he probably knocked over) so that his friend could wheel the cart through!
I get the license plate as they drive by. :D
But then I realized that they drove the wrong way. If they wanted to, they could have just drove away immediately. But they pulled around to the front of the store. Now why would they do that... unless there was a third person? ;D
I tell the security person all of this, and she reviews the tapes. Sure enough, ten minutes after they all parked, a third person gets out of the car and goes into the store. Apparently she has been caught shoplifting many times before, looootsa records. XD
We also get a fun little shot of the one guy going "where the hell did the cart go??" and the first guy had nooooo idea. Hahaha, when he left saying his totally-not-subtle "you have no idea" line, he thought his friend had already gotten away with it! I shoulda countered with something witty, but I'd like to think I took the more subtle route. They had noooooo idea that I had stopped them. I bet to this moment they still don't know it was me.
The security person knows these people. She says they're a professional group of thieves that mostly target walmart and other stores, moving on to different areas when it gets too "hot".
So let's recap. I stole an entire cart away from a group of "professional thieves" without them knowing. Also I can do parkour and flippies! Unrelated. :D

Back to School!
Posted 13 years agoAlright, so this summer wasn't very good in terms of artistic pursuits. Started my fair share of projects, but never quite finished, whether because I got bored, or in the case of lemerians... the concept was outdated before I finished. XD
I'm heading off to school soon, and I'm rather excited because I have spots of time in between classes. This means I'll have time to work on essays, or perhaps, get back into drawing.
As such, I've come up with a plan for myself. This might be bad news for people watching me, but ohhhh well. I'm going to be posting unfinished stuff. Sketches, poorly applied flat-colours... the lot of it. I know it might be a pain to see notebook doodles, but for those interested, I think it really shows my artistic progression (from crappy to less crappy). Plus, there are so many random changes I want to get opinions on, especially for lemerians.
So yes. This year, it won't appear as though I am dead. XD
I shall be ANNOYING!! ^..^

XD Well, as of the past few months, I finally have my first job!! I'm an overly-polite cashier! Sometimes I lift a bunch of 111 pound tiles. That's not an exaggeration! I checked the book! That's what they're listed as!!! XD
Since I've started I've been employee of the month, gotten a few "recognition awards", and other fun stuff. Seeeee stupid other places? You missed out! Thinking I was some inexperienced buttfungus...
^..^ I also can't wait for school!! I'm registered for Drama, and might sneak in on the choir class every now and again (which they already said I'm fully welcome to do as decent male singers are... hard to find and harder to convince to sing in the first place XD)
o..o Hm... as for art, I have a few things planned. Really haven't had a chance to do anything much, though. I still need to show off the finalized lemerian concept!! That can wait though. Snakey needs his time to shine too!
XD Also, expect a few stupid nomming pictures coming out, involving very strange characters that you're all familiar with, but wouldn't.... bah, nevermind. You'll just have to wait and see. XD

Posted 14 years ago^..^ I finally got my new laptop!!
Also, my birthday was really fun too! I didn't do a lot, but it was nice to just relax and hang out.
I made a new-years resolution to draw more, and I've so far kept it pretty well! All the drawings are really just notebook doodles from class, but I think I'll start periodically posting them as I work on them more. They'll probably be done with considerably less effort than I usually put in.
I've changed the design for both my aliens and the snakes, so I can't wait to see what it looks like in full colour! I've also been trying to work out how to do scales with more subtlety, and goodness gracious I need to fix that darn tongue! But I have a few really cool concepts I want to try out!
Anyway, expect to see me around a fair bit more!! There shall be mawwwwws!! XD
ALSO! I'm working on a comic for school!! It's going to be starring my snake, and it'll be about twisting ethical issues and fun stuff! So there's that!!

....doing some vorish drawings. Yeah, I'm still going to do the majora's mask thing, but I reeeeeeally want to draw some good old snake vore, and they say if you have a craving in art, you should embrace it immediately because cravings in art are rarer than broccoli in a python's stomach.

Thoughts of the Day
Posted 14 years agoI find I tend to juggle things. I juggle majors in school, pictures to finish, hobbies, aspirations...
I guess that's part of me my art will always show. I can't decide on a style. One moment I might discover one that works, but drop it because it takes too long. The simple fact is, I'm not a patient person. I like change. I like the absurd. I don't want to paint like everyone else. I want to paint in my own way. But sadly, I can't seem to find that way.
But there is good news... I've come to many realizations in art. Perhaps these will be helpful to read, perhaps they may not. Perhaps simply by stating them aloud, I might solidify them in my own subconscious. And I think it's safe to say, the subconscious is a huge part of painting. Otherwise it'd just be calculated perfection.
The first realization is that light is the basis of form. This should be pretty obvious, but what does it mean in terms of painting? Well, I realized that blurriness is okay. Highlights can lift a blurry picture and make it sharp. Light tricks the eye.
My second realization is just how important highlights are. When I first started out, I used to add many many highlights. Excessively, poorly... doesn't really matter. Despite my reservations against the dreaded Shine Lines, I cannot argue that they lifted my pictures. I complained that I had shine lines, but I never once removed them. Now, I've come to be a bit more tactful with my shading. I don't have shine lines anymore, I have actual highlights and shines of various shapes. I've realized that working with highlights is important. Far more important than shadows. Perhaps some might argue with this statement, and let me clarify... The shadows of a picture make the rest of the picture pop. Maybe this isn't always true, but it's very relevant to me. It's made me realize that I need to put less emphasis on the shadows. At least in my art, shadows are to emphasize the rest... add contrast (which is beautiful to me).
My third realization is that art is about failure, in a sense. What is style? What makes a photograph different from a painting? It's the imperfections... Every artist has a unique set of imperfections that make them who they are. And maybe you might think I'm being bitter about this, but I'm really not. I've realized that imperfection is beautiful. Unique is entrancing. Every "failure" in art is another thing that makes that picture special. Without mistakes, we'd be drawing the world only as we see it. Every dragon would be a proportion-perfect reptile with added attachments. Perhaps without imperfection, those early illustrations of dragons would be just crocodiles. Maybe the eastern dragons are just snakes with wings. What I mean is that from every mistake, we learn something new. Without those mistakes, art would be nothing more than copy-and-paste.
So... yeah. Most of this should be very obvious, but I thought I'd share anyway. Who knows, maybe there's someone out there who didn't know yet, haha! So yeah... what is "better"? We're trying to be better artists, right? Maybe we should be focusing on the things that make us unique, rather than better. If every furry drew a perfect fox in the same perfect adult situation... I dunno about you, but the fandom would be a lot less appealing. The fandom is a combination of (nearly) everything. Some things you love, some things you hate. But every thing you hate makes you love what you love that much more! Every image you have to sift through that's not appealing to you makes that hidden mawshot all the more mawsome!!

Now, I've come to be a bit more tactful with my shading. I don't have shine lines anymore, I have actual highlights and shines of various shapes. I've realized that working with highlights is important. Far more important than shadows. Perhaps some might argue with this statement, and let me clarify... The shadows of a picture make the rest of the picture pop. Maybe this isn't always true, but it's very relevant to me. It's made me realize that I need to put less emphasis on the shadows. At least in my art, shadows are to emphasize the rest... add contrast (which is beautiful to me).
My third realization is that art is about failure, in a sense. What is style? What makes a photograph different from a painting? It's the imperfections... Every artist has a unique set of imperfections that make them who they are. And maybe you might think I'm being bitter about this, but I'm really not. I've realized that imperfection is beautiful. Unique is entrancing. Every "failure" in art is another thing that makes that picture special. Without mistakes, we'd be drawing the world only as we see it. Every dragon would be a proportion-perfect reptile with added attachments. Perhaps without imperfection, those early illustrations of dragons would be just crocodiles. Maybe the eastern dragons are just snakes with wings. What I mean is that from every mistake, we learn something new. Without those mistakes, art would be nothing more than copy-and-paste.
So... yeah. Most of this should be very obvious, but I thought I'd share anyway. Who knows, maybe there's someone out there who didn't know yet, haha! So yeah... what is "better"? We're trying to be better artists, right? Maybe we should be focusing on the things that make us unique, rather than better. If every furry drew a perfect fox in the same perfect adult situation... I dunno about you, but the fandom would be a lot less appealing. The fandom is a combination of (nearly) everything. Some things you love, some things you hate. But every thing you hate makes you love what you love that much more! Every image you have to sift through that's not appealing to you makes that hidden mawshot all the more mawsome!!

XD Anywho. Yes, there is a point to this journal. Lately I haven't had time to draw full pictures as usual, but I've found myself doodling a lot in class. I was wondering if I should post those doodles. They're nothing special... in fact, they'd be posted with the class-notes as well. XD
I figured if I posted them, I'd put them in scraps. But I thought I'd ask, as I don't want to bombard anyone with messages about low-quality doodles. ^..^;;
