RIP Les Paul
Posted 16 years agoLes Paul died today. He worked hard on developing an electric guitar and built one of the first solid-body electrics. Most importantly, though, he developed multitrack recording. Before the days of multitracking, songs had to be recorded as live performances, which meant a single flub would require the entire band to do another take. With multitracking, everything could be recorded individually, so a single flub would only send one musician back into the recording booth. Also, multitracking allowed a single musician to play every part in a band. Multitracking also allowed bands like Queen to do all the amazing things they did.
Blah, I was hoping to get to see him perform at least once. The man was still performing into his 90s, and I was hoping to get to NYC to see one of his shows before he died or had to stop performing.

Paint huffing dudes in the middle of the night?
Posted 17 years agoIt's more likely than you think.
Some random military guy who had been huffing paint rang the doorbell at like 2:45. I answer the door and he starts going on about how he was just hit by a chemical attack and needs help. Initially, I'm like "Yeah, right." After a few minutes of that, I hand him my phone and tell him to call 911. I tried to keep him out of the house, but I finally caved and let him stand in the doorway while on the phone with 911. That's when I started smelling the paint. He hands me the phone so the 911 guys can talk to me, since he was obviously out of it or lying. The cops show up quickly enough (and in great numbers, like, 4 or 5 cars), and I find out the guy has been out in the garage and took a small package of yogurt. Anyway, the cops took him away.
He seemed like a nice enough guy, at least. The military part of his story checks out, as he did have a VA ID on him. He was very grateful that I let him use my phone and let him in the house to get away from "the chemical that was getting him." I suspect he's got a touch of PTSD that was aggravated by the paint fumes.

Posted 17 years agoI've got all these visual artists watched on FA, but I don't have many musicians watched. Anyone have any recommendations for good rock musicians here on FA? Rock musicians more in the vein of Led Zeppelin, The Who, or AC/DC, not this nu-metal super hardcore crap (or whatever the Hell it is they play these days) that I can't stand.

Posted 17 years agoI was joking with a friend about forming a band with him and releasing our first single as a double-A side with an original composition called "Drama Blues" and a cover of Metallica's "Of Wolf and Man".
That got me thinking, and I'm gonna try to write "Drama Blues". It'll mostly just be 2 bars of this 12 bar blues bit I'm learning right now for the guitar, but the solo should be fun.

Sketchbook Idea!
Posted 17 years agoI'm considering finding myself a nice sketchbook and putting a few lines from various songs on the pages and then letting artists just draw whatever comes to mind from the lyrics on the page. I might have 2 of them, actually. One would be for general audiences and the other would be "anything goes".

Posted 18 years agoAs much as I portray Aeth as a guitar hero, I didn't even own a guitar until this past Thursday. I found this little Stratocaster knock-off at Big Lots for $50. I know this probably makes it shit, but it's enough for me to learn on. Heh, I don't even have an amp yet, so I'm using my computer. I found some amp emulation software, actually, Guitar Rig 3. It's got more equipment in it than I really need at the moment, but it does give me some flexibility.

That's just me messing around with the intro to Smoke on the Water. I'm using the "Always with Satch" preset in that software for that recording, but I've since then come up with a custom setup that gives me a tone closer to what I sorta want right now.
