There is no Knowledge that is not power
Posted 10 years agoSo as a kid, I remember seeing that quote on the title screen of the Mortal Kombat machine at the arcade. And for the last 20 years, I've always wondered what that had to do with kicking people's heads off.

UH OH SOMEONE IS MAD ABOUT FURRY FOUND FOOTAGE!
Posted 10 years agoShhhh don't go harass the guy or anything, but it turns out that a macro Godzilla fetishist who uses the term "yiffy" unironically thinks that SHOW's Furry Found Footage is the most offensive thing he's ever seen:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6857436/
I'm really scared! One guy in the comments got his gun out! And he did it IN ASTERISK so you know he means business! Perhaps I should buy a dog in asterisk to protect myself!
I should point out, of course, that we at SHOW welcome all critique and have nothing but good vibes to send out even to those that would shoot us dead.

Saw the Krampus movie
Posted 10 years agoThe other day,
aurelina,
kaiven and I went to see the new movie Krampus. I had high hopes for this film since it was written and directed by Michael Dougherty who created the criminally underrated Halloween gem Trick 'r' Treat, but this movie TOTALLY surpassed all expectations. Krampus is one of the best films I've seen in quite some time, and if you enjoyed my big Guttersnipe Christmas story (or, really, if you enjoy any of my Guttersnipe comics at all ) you really owe it to yourself to check this movie out. The basic premise follows a dysfunctional extended family forced to spend the holidays together. Max hates spending time with his obnoxious cousins almost as much as his parents can't stand his uncle and aunts, but, when Max acidentally summons the traditional Austrian Christmas demon krampus to punish them for their lack of holiday spirit, they all have to put aside their differences to survive. This movie could have been utter garbage if handled wrong, but Doughtery gets everything spot on. It's marketed as a horror film, but that's a little bit misleading. I'd compare it more to Gremlins; it's got a lot of dark comic mayhem and it can be pretty creepy, but it's not really scary. The opening half hour before Krampus arrives is a pitch perfect spoof on detestable holiday oh-ho-ho-isn't-it-funny-how-much-we-hate-our-relatives comedies like Christmas with the Kranks and Four Christmases. But once things start going, man! Krampus is a movie that knows exactly when to show things and when to tease the audience. Lots of good, interesting weirdness in this -- you can't get bored, because everytime that you think you've seen it all, the movie invents some new goofy thing to throw at you. It's not afraid to make some story-telling risks, so there are a lot of great moments that lesser movies probably would have left on the cutting room floor for fear that audiences wouldn't 'get' them -- for example, a really nifty sequence where Max's German grandmother Omi tells the family about her previous encounter with the krampus is told through Rankin-Bass style puppetoon animation.
Horror movies -- even campy, tongue-in-cheek flicks like this one -- live or die by their characters. So many bad horror movies populate their worlds with unlikeable, useless, expendable characters, assuming that audiences WANT to root for people to die. Effective horror movies should make you upset when people die, they should make you want to see people survive. This movie does that, giving even the obnoxious gate-crashing relatives enough depth to make you kind of like them. Granted, this isn't exactly a deep, nuanced character study but movies like this don't need to be; you just need enough detail to kinda get the characters. The whole family is a lot of fun and they all have their own little quirks that give them distinct and entertaining personalities -- especially loudmouth gun-nut Uncle Howard (who ends up becoming this movie's Burt Gummer). There are also some nice tender moments laced throughout the movie, so that the central theme about the bonds of family doesn't feel like tacked-on schmaltz. It feels real. The scenes with Omi were especially touching for me, and I admit I got a little choked up. Granted, I might be biased because she reminded me so much of my own German grandmother, rest her soul. One of the nice touches in this movie was that Omi mostly spoke German throughout the entire film with her grandson Max translating for the rest of the relatives. It's very subtle, but I thought it helped to really establish that Max and his Omi had a unique bond.
Finally, the monsters... very cool, you get an endless menagerie of new and ever weirder Christmas demons throughout the flick and, best of all, most of them are realized by very good practical effects. There's some CG, obviously, but it's used sparingly and appropriately. Most of the monsters have that awesome lumbering, visceral feel that you only get with old school puppets.
So yeah, go see Krampus. This movie deserves to be a big hit, since it's actually good. I mean, what other movies are out now? Yet another by-the-numbers Hunger Games installment and yet another formulaic Pixar schmaltzfest. Fuck that shit. Krampus is old school comedy horror; it's like watching the return of Ghostbusters or Gremlins or, dare I say it, even The Goonies. We need more movies like this. Anyway, if you do see it, tell me what you think. I'd be curious to know if other people enjoyed it as much as I did.

Posted 10 years agoYeah boi we just got a table in the marketplace, so YEAH. We'll be premiering our second furry found footage compilation at a panel there, so BE THERE or be uncool. Also we'll have it (and other goodies, including the complete bound A GUTTERSNIPE CHRISTMAS in physical book form for you old people who like that) for sale at our table, which you'll be able to recognize by the way we decorate it in old VHS paraphenalia like we're a post-apocalyptic warlord.
In other news, did you guys here that Donald Trump is funny? I just spent the last few days in a hotel where I watched television, which I don't usually do since I get all my entertainment from the Internet and Netflix. It turns out that people really really love talking about Trump because I guess it's not like there's anything important happening in the world today.
Also when relatives tell you they "like some of the things he's saying," you just hafta be all :|

Going out of country for two weeks
Posted 10 years agoI'm going to be out of country for the next two weeks to visit family and my Internet connection will probably be pretty spotty. So I might not be able to post any Guttersnipe strips while I'm gone. Which is a real shame, because we're in the final stretch. But strips are qued up to post on schedule at the official Guttersnipe website at www.guttersnipecomic.com . So if you still want to keep up, check the site out on Tuesdays and Thursdays! See you guys in two weeks!
See me at Anthrocon
Posted 10 years agoPsych, no I won't be there. But my book will! If you're there, why don't you stop by Booth K13 to visit Jarlidium Press, perveyor of quality comic merchandise. How quality? Well, they've got my book, Cool Cat's Drug-Free Goodtime Comic, for sale! So you know THAT's good stuff! It's the first ever collection of Murry Purrt Fresh and Furry comics, so it's got all the funny strips in it!
Oh and if you're at Anthrocon, how is it? Is it fun? I've never had a chance to go, seeing as it's on the opposite coast from me!

Furry Found Footage: We want YOUR garbage!
Posted 10 years agoSo some of you may already know that Aurelina and I attended Biggest Little Furcon in Reno this weekend to host our Furry Found Footage panel. It was a good time, despite some minor mix-ups in scheduling. But I think, for me, the highlight of the convention was stumbling into the adult section of the dealer room and finding boxes and boxes of old YARF anthologies, all FREE for the taking. What a bizarre trip that was! It was like looking into a time capsule of furry fandom in the 90s. And you know what? Boy, did it suck! Haha now seriously it was fascinatnig to see what interested the people of that decade and it turns out that it was mostly CON REPORTS. Endless, endless con reports. Just so many. Every knucklehead with a pencil was drawing reams and reams of comics about their mundane convention experiences, because, of course, EVERYONE was just on pins and needles to hear about how you saw TERRI SMITH or MICHELLE LIGHT out of the corner of your eye. (Hint ofr the kids: 90s furries were FUCKING OBSESSED with Terri Smith and Michelle Light.)
But this brings me to my next point. I was talking with a few people after our Found Furry Footage panel and mentioned how fascinating all this history is. Aurelina and I have always wanted to put more bizarre fandom footageinto our compilations, because that's some of the funniest stuff. So far we've got a goo amount of old news reports on the fandom and convention footage to work with, but we want more. So we're asking YOU, the people. If you have any old furry garbage -- video of conventions or furmeets or furry events that you are willing to share, please contact me here. We are interested in taking it off your hands.
We're also starting work on another fun new project, our guidebook to furry found footage. People are always asking us what the bizarre things in our videos are from and this book will help explain them. Want to know what program was originally responsible for those scenes of puppet frogs reciting Bible verses? Want to know what convention had those two Lola bunny fursuits making out in the hallway? This will tell you. As part of that, we thought it would be fun to include a little bit of context about what was going on in furry fandom during the same time that a lot of these old 90s furry programs were originally airing, so we're also looking for any sort of archeological miscellanea to include: photos, con programs, even reminiscenses by people who were there. We're going to be pulling some of the amusing, ridiculous bits out of these Yarf books, but we need more.
TLDR: We want old furry junk from you attic. If you have video footage, photos, con programs, old zines, APAs, whatever, anything from the 90s or early 00s or even earlier, and you're willing to share them with the world, please note me!

FC recap PLUS HOW TO ORDER FURRY FOUND FOOTAGE DVD
Posted 11 years agook guys so we're back from Further Confusion, oh man what a blast! FC is always fun, and it was great to room with the chillest gang ever FUN COVEN
aurelina,
rafferty,
rabbitshakejake,
zoemoss, and
sharpt00th, and to see so many old friends like
athelind,
xaxoqual,
zippiner,
skitzycat,

bearsculptor,
tkdye,
sigil,

pierrezaius,
ribnose, Boarhound and Richard Robins so I could gush about his book. Also very excited to meet
IanJay and
chickenteeth and get a copy of their totally rockin' Rock and Rule zine. Very fun all round. Talking is hard.
I missed most of Saturday because I made poor life decisions ie I went to the Klingon party on Friday and had some sort of shot and then spent the rest of the night and much of the following day vomiting and shaking. So remember you should always drink responsibly.
One of the major highlights was seeing the very first MURRY PURRY FRESH AND FURRY (www.murrypurry.com) collection come out from Jarlidium Press! This is very exciting, so if you weren't able to pick up your copy, you should head over to http://www.jarlidium.com/ and get yourself a copy. IT'S CHEAP and will help you make better life decisions than I did.
The big news, though, is that Aurelina and I had our furry found footage panel on Sunday night. As
podcastigation fans know, Aurelina and I spend most of our free time scouring thrift stores and dumpsters for weird old VHS tapes that we then compile the furry bits into context-free dada mondo video cinema verite art installations. So it was 40 minutes of dogs teaching you about gun safety, frogs teaching you about Jesus, and random clips from 90s furry cons. Due to mistakes on my part the conbook didn't specify that it was a found footage event, so I wasn't sure if we would get thr right crowd showing up, but it looks like the FC rumor mill was in full force because EVERYONE was there. We had an AMAZING turn-out, all the cool kids came by. And, wow, we were really blown away by the response! People were going crazy! We started the evening with a short game with some fabulous prizes, meaning that people had the chance to win ACTUAL VHS TAPES that you could play in ACTUAL VCR MACHINES! I was actually pretty surprised by how many people claimed to still have VCRs! After that, we kicked off with our traditional "Dinosaucers" opener before launching into our feature presentation. Response was really phenomenal, but unfortunately we didn't think ahead to bring copies of our DVD. Oh well!
A couple big surprises: When the panel was opening, this group of folks in giant shutter shades and alligator hats and whatnot come piling in and sit on the floor in front because we were already out of seats by then, and I was thinking "Okay, these dudes look like a thrift store exploded on them, so they are clealry hipsters and that means we're reaching the right demographic." So that was pretty exciting to start, but then it turned out that it was really
prawst and the Adventure Cru, so that was pretty wild. Very happy that they enjoyed the panel too!
Perhaps even more surprising that it turned out someone IN OUR VIDEO PRESENTATION WAS IN THE ACTUAL ROOM!!! Many of the clips from Confurence 96 featured con chair
rodso64, and it turned out that he had overheard about the event. So he dropped by and was just a totally awesome guy about the whole thing. Really a class act!
A lot of people said that they also had footage to donate for next year's video, so I'll be getting in contact with each of you soon. JUST YOU WAIT.
For those of you who didn't get a chance to buy a copy of the SHOW FURRY FOUND FOOTAGE DVD, you can note me with your paypal and I'll send you an invoice. The DVD is $20 (that includes all shipping charges) and includes the 40 minute video premiered at our FC panel plus a second 40 minute video never before seen by the public. Also, just for the hell of it, it's got some scanned covers from various VHS tapes that we found that we thought were especially amusing.
So all in all, a great con! Can't wait to start work on next year's presentation now that we have so much more material to work with. Keep watching this space for updates!

SHOW at Further Confusion
Posted 11 years agoSo
aurelina and I haven't had time to record any new SHOW lately due to extinuating circumstances, namely FAMILY AND WORK OBLIGATIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. Not to mention the single biggest event of the year: FURTHER CONFUSION.
After an absence of a year due to Aurelina being in Japan, SHOW will be returning with an all-new panel at FC this year, so those of you who are coming to the con should really come see us. Our theme this year is furry found footage, so we'll be sharing some of our favorite bizarre video finds -- both from the thrift shop and beyond! We'll be showing you lots of weird puppets, awful animation and more, MUCH more. In fact, assuming that a certain special package arrives in the mail soon, we should have an especially delightful video to show you guys!
Our panel will be on Sunday night at 9:30 pm in the Marriott's Blossom Hill I. Because SHOW is so great that FC knew not even a Sunday night timeslot would harsh our mellow! XD I kid, it'll be great :) Seriously, drop by if you can, you'll have fun.
As for the rest of the con, look for us at the Sanguine Games table with
rafferty in the dealer's room. That's right, SHOW is INSIDE THE DEALER'S ROOM. Agouti will probably be manning SHOW's half of the table while Aurelina gadflies about as she is wont to do, but SHOW will have lots of quality merchandise, like SHOW on DVD, a DVD of our found footage, stickers, graphic novels like Malleus Maleficarum, Misunderstanding Comics, and Muffintop, and much more. And if you're not in a purchasin' mood, you should just drop by the table and say hello because WE LOVE YOU ALL.
Speaking of which, which of you goons will be there? Tell us so we know who to watch for.
