I'm finally eating again... Kind of. If a cheese stick counts.
I'm also feeling a little better than the last few months. I'm trying to stay a float and stay cheerful. But ts been hard. My entire body is weak and its hard to draw. Ive dropped 20 lb since summer started and the harassment got worse. I'll try to eat more to get the energy to finish commissions and art trades. Ill hopefully get my engery back by Monday or Tuesday. I'm sorry commissions are coming out so slowly I really am. Because of all the stress and the fact my depression is So crippling at this point I will be permanently closing commission. I will open up every so often but I doubt I'll take more than one or two commissions. I'll mostly be doing gifts personal art and art trades here and there.

So I'm a bit of a scatterbrain and I would like it og you comment below if you have a commission waiting from me and a ref of the character you had wanted me to draw I finished a couple but I don't remember where some of them go since I didn't liable it. Promise after this misshap it'll never happen again I will start labeling things and making sure things do not get lost. Also this months commissions ((except for 1 reference sheet)) are closed. HOW TO MAKE A CLOSED SPECIES

Step 1: Don't make closed features.

Just because your species has long claws, that doesn't mean everyone else who has OCs with claws is stealing your idea.How to Make a Closed Species explains it perfectly.

Step 2: Don't be a d*ck.

Many species WILL have similarities. Especially for features (popular: large wings, gems, etc.) or if you base your species off well-known, existing animals. Just accept that no species can be 100% original and let people make their own stuff, without calling everyone a thief.

Other BS
- charging hundreds for MYO's (you're not even drawing them)
- making them impossible to get for people without money
- not letting people draw you fanart or just draw them for fun

Step 3: Have fun!

You made your species for fun, right? There will be people who will make you feel bad about your species or times where you feel stressed because of them. But all the drama is not going to get any of us anywhere. Just have fun already XD

What's NOT A closed species:

:bulletpink: Animals with too little features (sparkling bunnies)
:bulletpink: Hybrids with too little features (goat and fish mix)
:bulletpink: Show characters with extra features (Mickey Mouse with wings)

However, you can counter by giving your species enough features, a story, etc. that make them unique.

Here are just a few reasons why people hate on closed species:

1. "I don't have money for them / They're too expensive."

Just make your own character/species or save up for one? Character design is just like with commissions, you pay an artist for his skills and creativity, not just a picture that pops out of nowhere. As much as some of us would like to, it's hard to give out everything for free and adoptables can literally make one's income.

Another popular reason: "They're just ripping us off"
I'm stalking many species makers and yes, a lot of the characters sell for a loooot of money. But the starting bids (for auctions) are usually pretty affordable. It's the fans who pay the artists, they can always decide to stop giving us money if they feel like we're too expensive.

Most artists host contests and raffles where they giveaway characters too, use those opportunities!

2. "You don't have copyright for them, duhhhh"

Get out. If an artist asks you to not copy all of his ideas, even if he cannot back it up by law, it's simply asking to RESPECT his decisions.

3. "Closed species limit our creativity."

I don't believe anyone will get limited to a point where it gets sooo bad that you have to cry about it. You are free to express yourself through your artwork, but what's the issue with just drawing fanart for some characters instead of desperately trying to get one for yourself?

Just PLEASE stop complaining so much!!

If you don't like the concept of closed species, you can either ignore them or have mature discussions on journals like these. It can really ruin the fun for us species makers, and in fact, kills our creativity if you whine about everything. We come up with all those ideas to share with the world, but also with the expectation to get something back from it.

Unless the artist is unfair or b*tchy about it, there is really no reason why you should feel upset.

To help you understand, here are just a few of my own reasons why I make my species closed and how I handle stuff.

1. Overview & Organization

It is a lot easier to have a species set to "closed" if you want to know the exact number of people who own a character of said species. You can have a whole group of owners, host events specifically for that species, collect fanart, see how the characters develope, etc.

It's just very exciting for me to watch all of that happen and see how happy people are when they can get a character from me.

2. You are supporting the artist.

Closed or not, you are still helping the artist financially by purchasing character designs from him. Or you just made someone really happy, knowing that he made a design that other people liked enough to spend money on it.

3. Credit alone is not enough.

Especially not if you care about having an overview & organization. It's obvious that many people will not credit you anyways, but if there was money involved, you can at least be sure that the people who bought your adopts know their value and therefore care more about your rules.
And again, it can be a great financial help.

4. I am a collector & get super excited!

I looove collecting or achieving simple stuff, even if I try to keep it within limits. So having a closed species-character from an artist that I really admire really means a lot to me. I get super hyped about it and love the character to bits. I don't care that much about rarity standards when I buy a character, but often there are just traits that are rare and cost more - but if I really like a design, I can be responsible enough to come up with that money or let the character pass, without whining about its price.

4a. Closed species get associated with their creators.

I also think that it's an achievement itself to get associated with a certain species. This will be very rewarding for marketing reasons and let your species stay the way you intend them to be (anyone can alter open species, credit is not given all the time, etc.). Who wouldn't want an exclusive piece of their favourite artists?

(of course this only applies to mine!)

:bulletgreen: My base MYO prices will never go really high, even if adoptable and custom prices might increase.
:bulletgreen: The money I charge for MYO just makes up for all the time I spend on their development.
:bulletgreen: There will always be contests or raffles where you can win characters for free.
:bulletgreen: Fanart is allowed. Apparently it is a thing to get upset over fanart.
:bulletgreen: Feel free to make something inspired by my species, as long as you don't take all the features one by one and copy everything.
:bulletgreen: I will make open species in the future too.


An example with my Kandra species:

You CAN make a dragon anthro, candy-themed weapons, etc.

Kandras are not very original and I never claimed so. Still, there is a looot of heart and work that went into them and I'd like to ask you to not copy each of their features one by one and combine them, making it very obvious that you took my ideas. Simply out of respect, you should understand that instead of complaining about it.
