Germany! Berlin! EF! What to do? Staying connected?
Posted 11 years agoSo
bfoxxe and I are flying to Germany in a week. We'll have several days to run around Berlin before EF happens. We've only got one day planned -- we're meeting up with a local birdwatcher to hit some spots where we can hopefully catch some new species, at least those that are active in mid-August.
What else should we do? Anything in the Berlin area that we absolutely must see? Places where we must eat/drink? Post your suggestions in the comments!
Also what's the best way to stay connected to the internet in Germany? We're planning on keeping our phones for voice and text, but turning off data because it's too expensive, but we don't want to be constantly looking around for places with free wifi just to stay in touch when we're away from EF. Should we pick up a cheap pay-as-you go phone/hotspot for the two weeks that we're there? Where would you go to find that sort of thing?
Thanks for your suggestions! Hope to see some of you there! We're really looking forward to EF, even if we don't feel at all prepared.

Preparing for EF
Posted 11 years agoI've been trying various tools to learn German before Eurofurence. Rosetta Stone is not my style -- I hate just having things thrown at you without context or the ability to learn basic things like grammar rules, word gender, etc. I'd recently started using Duolingo, which is like Rosetta Stone, but with the context that Rosetta Stone is missing, and I'm mostly enjoying it!
But then this happened:
https://twitter.com/alopexfoxy/stat.....53684629086209
Should I be worried? Is this how Germany is getting back at us Americans for the NSA?

Back to Germany!
Posted 11 years agoGermany has invited me back!
The official announcement was last week, but work was crazy bad the week after FWA, and then I was busy all weekend doing Heat #11 editing, but now I finally have some brain cells I can put towards celebrating that Sofawolf Press has been invited as Guests of Honor for Eurofurence #20, Crime Scene Berlin, in August 2014! http://www.eurofurence.org/EF20/goh We’re thrilled, honored, and incredibly excited to be heading back to Germany.
We were last in Germany in 2008 for Eurofurence #14, From Dusk Till Dawn, which was held in the Ringburg Hotel in Suhl. It was a great trip, with a bit of hiking in the Black Forest surrounding the Ringburg Hotel in the days prior to the con and some sight-seeing afterwards. I plan to post some photos online as memories of our time there. We rarely get to enjoy a convention as a full vacation, free of working the dealer’s room, and the Ringburg Hotel was great for that. Sure, the dining options were a bit limited, up on the top of that hill, but we loved the fact that you could get a beer at 10:00 AM and hang out in the little bar in the middle of everything and watch the entire con come and go before us. We also had some wonderful friends and hosts to show us around and make us feel welcome.
At the time, I knew hardly any German, and Brer had learned a smattering via Rosetta Stone. We managed, though in the remote parts of Eastern Germany, where English is not as commonly taught, we definitely had our challenges communicating with the locals. This time, I’m planning ahead and studying a bit of German, myself. It’s always something I’d wanted to do, and now I have a deadline ahead of me! I also have a deadline for getting my old passport renewed.
I have no idea what the demands of being a GOH at EF are going to be like, but it should be fun, and I look forward to meeting everyone else who will be there too!

Submissions open for Heat and Hot Dish!
Posted 12 years agoSofawolf Press just moved their submissions process from a chaos of emails and spreadsheets to Submittable, an online submissions management service. We all hope that this will help make the submissions management and review process a lot smoother and will also help keep us from falling behind in some categories. Our general submissions page can be found here: https://sofawolfpress.submittable.com/submit
It's also the move to Submittable that delayed our opening of submissions for Heat #11. Normally, we'd have opened for submissions a month or so ago, but hopefully it will have been worth the wait. We're going to have submissions open for a month, through September 30. If that's enough time, great! We can jump into production then. However, we may extend the deadline if we are still looking for content of certain types to fill out the volume.
Submissions for Heat are broken out into:
Stories: https://sofawolfpress.submittable.com/submit/20577
Poems: https://sofawolfpress.submittable.com/submit/23306
Comics: https://sofawolfpress.submittable.com/submit/23309
(Since we put out a call for submissions every year about this time, we hope that you writers and poets out there are already working on submissions, and have not been waiting for the official opening to get to work. Otherwise...get writing! You only have a month!)
Based on the initial success of Hot Dish, we have also decided to start work on another volume. This will not be scheduled for a particular release -- we will collect stories until we have accepted enough that we can put together the next volume. So, if you have a romantic/erotic story in the 10,000-20,000 word count range to polish up, or you want to start working on one, now is the time!
Submissions for Hot Dish can be submitted at:
https://sofawolfpress.submittable.com/submit/23312
Not sure what we're looking for? Read the submission guidelines at the links above, and grab a copy of each publication to see what we've published recently: Heat 10 (https://www.sofawolf.com/products/heat-10) and Hot Dish 1 (https://www.sofawolf.com/products/hotdish)
Many thanks to
who has really stepped up to help out with editing and management of these projects. We would be even less likely to keep our anthologies coming out on time without him!

Posted 12 years agoHot Dish (swp.im/p/hd $17.95) was released at FWA a couple weekends ago, and the first review (that I know of) is in, and it's by Fred Patten on Flayrah: http://www.flayrah.com/4671/review-.....-edited-alopex
Following his usual review format, Fred describes and highlights the book for the most part, leaving any analysis/opinions until the very end:
Nine stories. Seven of them are arguably funny-animal stories in which the anthro-animal characters could have just as easily be human, and only two in which the anthro-status is meaningful. But all are well-written. If you can put up with mild lovemaking (by modern standards) to hot ‘n heavy XXX gay scenes, put Hot Dish volume 1 on your definitely-to-be-read list.
I certainly can't quibble with his "definitely-to-be-read list" part! And I will agree that many of the stories don't ]have to be furry, but I would counter that the furry character comes into play in more than just two of the stories, but in more subtle ways.
If you're curious for a bit more background about the anthology and would like to read some of my thoughts about what made each story worthy of inclusion in the anthology, I've written a couple of blogs, posted to the Sofawolf website and LiveJournal:

Hot Dish getting closer! Cover by Kamui
Posted 13 years agoI took a break from editing last night to (finally) get Hot Dish up on the Sofawolf website's Coming Soon page. You can view it here!
https://www.sofawolf.com/coming-soon
NOTE: this link will set your browser to adult-products-view on our website
Cover art is by the wonderfully talented
kamui and can be viewed here! Interior art by the equally talented
keovi (Sneak previews at the Coming Soon link above.)
Hot Dish is a novel-length collection of adult stories culled from Heat submissions that were great stories, but too long for the Heat format. It is a project that has been simmering away in the slow cooker for a long time. I've had to move it into a pressure cooker to speed things up in order to try to have a release at FWA. Wish me luck at actually finishing it!

Heat #10 Comic Submission Reminder!
Posted 13 years agoThis is your two-week reminder for Heat #10 comic submissions! Submission deadline for comics/proposals is Monday, October 1st. (We don't specify a time, so you are free to submit as long as it is still October 1st somewhere on the planet.)
Submission guidelines are here: https://www.sofawolf.com/submissions/heat-comics
Feeling a bit daunted by all the details on the submission requirements page? Please don't be! The goal of the details are (1) to make sure that you provide the type of materials we'll be looking for to best judge your story and art, and (2) try to keep things uniform so that we can easily share the submissions among reviewers. (I don't want to spend weeks just formatting entries into something standard that we can share.) Do your best to meet the requirements, and the closer you get the happier we reviewers will be.
I haven't really had any feedback on this new submission format or the project in general, so I'm very curious to hear what people think. Are you working on a submission? Problems with the submission format, payment rates or anything else? Feel free to leave comments here, or if you don't want people to know you're working on something, you can drop me a note or email heat@sofawolf.com. I have no idea whether to expect a trickle or a flood come the final deadline.

So...Hugo award! Also, Guacamole
Posted 13 years agoIn case you didn't hear the hollering from Chicago last Sunday night, here's what went down.
Last spring, Ursula Vernon was nominated for a Hugo Award in the category of "Best Graphic Story" for her comic Digger, which is free online (www.diggercomic.com) and which we (Sofawolf Press) sell in print form (swp.im/shop/digger). So we all headed to Worldcon / Chicon7 over the Labor Day weekend for the convention and the awards ceremony on Sunday night.
Worldcon is a LONG con. We staffed the dealer's room for 5 days (Thursday through Monday), which is as long as San Diego Comic Con -- but with only about as many attendees as Anthrocon. This is very much a SF/F readers' and writers' con -- there was very little for the big media companies like you see at SDCC, very little cosplay, but an awful lot of people passionate about books and short stories. It was fun, even though we had an uphill battle convincing people to look at graphic stories or furry content in general, other than Ursula's stuff, which was >90% of our sales the whole con. We're not complaining, though! We met a lot of interesting people and sold enough product to cover the table, electricity, travel and hotel stay with perhaps a little left over after the bills are paid.
Anyhow, Sunday night was the big night, and we suffered through standing in the back of the ballroom through the ceremony because our dinner went late and we were lucky just to get in. John Scalzi was a great presenter -- keeping things light and fun and moving along. There was apparently a glitch in the live Ustream of the ceremonies due to the (approved and totally fair-use) clips from TV and movie nominees being broadcast, which got the stream pulled by copyright-bots. Much drama over that that we heard about after the fact. The stream cut out just before Neil Gaiman's acceptance for The Doctor's Wife, George R.R. Martin for Game of Thrones (Season 1)...and then the presentation of Best Graphic Story.
We were incredibly excited and nervous. We'd had hopes, hearing many people tell us over the course of the weekend that they'd voted for Digger, but we dared not hope TOO much, having already lost out on two Eisner's. So when the announcement came that Digger had won, a great whoop rose from all of us at the back of the room, startling greatly the people just in front of us, and then the great adrenaline rush as the reality sunk in that Digger had won, Ursula had won...and we by proxy had also kinda sort won too.
I needed something to do, so I pulled out my cell phone and started recording as Ursula approached the stage. I never thought it would be anything other than a shaky, blurry, barely-audible recording for my own benefit. I raised my phone high and held it as steady as I could while Ursula began her amusing and brilliantly executed acceptance speech. She was awesome, she did not drop her award, I got it all...and the remainder of the awards were a bit of a blur. We went up, watched her stand for what seemed an uncomfortable amount of time getting photos taken, then were glad that we got to mingle with her and Kevin while they tried to come to grips with everything. I found the posting of the voting results -- Digger had won handily, getting 2x the number of votes as the next contestant (Fables). I showed them to Ursula, which she seemed to appreciate, but may not have actually remembered after the fact.
Brer and I did not make it to the parties afterwards -- tickets were limited, I had picked up con crud, and we had a hike, then a 35 min. train ride back to our hotel. But we heard about it later. Completely packed, too loud to hear. We're ultimately content in not having gone, even though we missed out on the Guacamole Incident.
Ursula has posted a wonderful summary of her experience, which includes full details of her Nacho Bar Death Match with Neil Gaiman: http://ursulav.livejournal.com/1508804.html
Video of her speech can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLfxHxLiyxo

Off to Worldcon/Chicon7
Posted 13 years agoI'm on vacation! Yaaaay! *KermitArmFlail*
It has been a very tough, grinding, relentless last few weeks at the day job, but I got done what needed to be done just in time.
bfoxxe and I head down to Chicago tomorrow to set up the Sofawolf booth for Worldcon/Chicon7 http://www.chicon.org/
It's our first time working this convention, so we're curious to see how Furry stuff sells at this general SF/F con. However what we're REALLY excited about is cheering on Ursula Vernon and Digger at the Hugo awards ceremony! (http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-h.....2-hugo-awards/) Even if she doesn't win, it's awesome she was nominated, and we've heard the looser parties are definitely worth going to afterwards.
Now we just have to hope that Isaac doesn't slip this far north and be-soggen the weekend for us, or the drive back on Monday.

2. Heat #10 Stories & Poems: A little over two weeks until the end of open submissions (September 4). It's the same process as previous years, though we will be printing this issue in color. https://www.sofawolf.com/submissions/heat

Sofawolf looking for illustrator for Hot Dish!
Posted 13 years agoWe've finished selecting stories for Hot Dish, a novel-length collection of adult furry stories, so now it's time to get them illustrated while we work on the editing phase! We're looking for a single artist who can do nine B&W (grayscale) illustrations, one to lead each of the stories in the collection. The stories cover a range of species and settings, including some humans, so we're looking for an artist who can work with a range of subjects, yet provide a single unifying style across the whole collection.
Hot Dish evolved from submissions to Heat that were too long to be included in the shorter magazine format. They were great stories that we had to reject from what they were submitted to simply because they did not fit the format. Over time there were enough that we decided to pull them together to create a new anthology to help showcase these longer, more complex stories. (We put out a call for submissions to fill the initial batch out to a more novel-length collection.) If you're familiar with Kyell Gold's anthology "X" (swp.im/p/x), you have a good feel for about how big this collection is going to be.
If you are interested, please check out our blog or our LiveJournal. Feel free to direct any questions to heat@sofawolf.com.

SWP submissions for Heat #10 COLOR COMICS, stories & poetry
Posted 13 years agoIn a little less than a year, we (Sofawolf Press) hope to be releasing our TENTH volume of Heat! It’s kind of amazing to realize how long we’ve been doing this adult anthology thing, and so to celebrate going into double digits, we’re taking Heat full color. In order to take advantage of the extra inks we will be paying for, we’re going to shift the balance a bit towards more visual stories relative to text. We’ll still have several short stories and poems, but we are hoping to bring in more comics.
Another big change is that we are now taking formal submissions for comics. (Previously, they were by invitation.) Now anyone who would like to see their comic skills in print can have a chance to do so! We hope the new process will be a bit more fair, and will also help us fill out the additional slots available with less project management on our part. It’s a bit of an experiment, so hopefully this all works out! Feedback on the process is accepted.
I’ve announced our call for submissions on our blog and LiveJourna account. The submission details for comics can be found under the submissions section of our website. Due date for comic submissions is Monday, October 1, 2012. Additional details can be found at the links above.
The submission process and requirements are a bit long to read through, but the upshot is that we want to be able to judge your comic story’s potential without requiring you to complete it before the submission deadline ends. If you work quickly and can have the comic (or perhaps a B&W version) ready in two months, or if you have one already completed you’d like to submit, that’s great! But if not, you can start working on a new idea and hopefully two months will be enough time for you to work out the details, decide the style you want to do it in, and pull together enough examples to sell your proposal to our reviewers.
We accept collaborations! So, if you are an artists without confidence in the writing area, or you’re a writer who would like to find an artist to draw your ideas, that’s great! However, it’s up to you to put together your creative team of collaborators before you submit your comic idea to us.
Stories and Poetry too!
We have officially opened for story and poetry submissions as well. Submission guidelines can be found on our website. The submission deadline for stories and poetry is Monday, September 3, 2012. It’s shorter than the comic deadline because we do this every year, so hopefully writers are have already been working on stories for submission and haven’t been sitting around waiting for us to announce the submission deadline before starting to write. The comic submissions are a totally new thing, so we’re giving people more time to pull proposals together.
For those of you not familiar with Heat, it is our award-winning annual anthology of furry stories told in the format of short stories, poetry and comics. Content is adult (ranging from romantic to erotic) and represent a wide range of sexual orientations in each issue. You can check out our latest issue for sale here, and then work your way back through previous volumes. We start production in late summer so that the whole thing can be ready for release at Anthrocon the following summer.
Good luck and have fun with it! We’re excited about what next summer is going to bring.

Dogs Are Graceful, Even In Failure
Posted 13 years agoAnnouncing Heat #9!
Posted 13 years agoYES, after months of reviewing, and editing, and managing art, and more editing, and layouts, Heat #9 is finally in the final stages towards getting printed! All art and stories are in and contracts signed, so I can safely announce the new issue without fear of having to retract information because of late changes.
Heat #9 will have its official release at Anthrocon in June, and then will be available online on June 20th on the Sofawolf website HERE, the Wednesday following the convention (by which we hope to have survived the 2-day road trip home).
This year's volume has a great lineup of stories and art -- as always but more so! Or something like that. We have quite a range of story themes, and of course a range of sexual orientations to boot. The art is also a wonderful range of digital and traditional media. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out in print.
You can view the table of contents page, which I just posed. That has icon links to most of the folks here on FA who have contributed to this volume. Unable to appear on that page because of FA's limit on icons-per-post, we have
blotch
khaz
tush
rukis
foxfeather
mitti
huskyteer.
TEASERS!
Here are the teaser images that I've found from the various artists who contributed to this issue. If you know of more, please let me know and I'll add them!

HUGO NOMINATION!
Posted 13 years agoSo...the Hugo Award nominations were announced today, and Ursula Vernon's comic Digger has been nominated under the category of "Best Graphic Story"!
http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-h.....2-hugo-awards/
Woooo! The Hugos are one of the biggest awards in the world of science fiction and fantasy. We're terribly excited for Ursula and glad to see her get recognition for the years and years of work that she put into posting her comic every Tuesday and Thursday until the story reached its conclusion. The entire saga is a monument to dedication, humor, art and insight.
But Sofawolf gets to bask a little more than usual in the edge of her limelight because this award specifically mentions us as publishers. Digger's previous award wins were either for the Digger webcomic specifically, and her Eisner Award nomination was for Ursula herself, as "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition". The 2012 Hugo nomination is the first time that the print edition is specifically being given credit. I can't complain about that!
Shameless plug: we've discounted Digger 20% on our website to encourage folks to buy the books -- that's like getting 1 free if you buy the full 6 volume set!
https://www.sofawolf.com/shop/digger
...or, of course, you can still read the entire thing FOR FREE (without the print extras) online at:
http://www.diggercomic.com/
And if you happen to be going to be a Worldcon member, please remember to vote by Chicon 7!

Furry Information Hwy closing -- where are the helicopters?
Posted 13 years agoSeriously. With all the FA journal posts about how to survive the coming outage, I get the impression that this is as big a calamity as the 405 closing in LA last fall. Make plans! Notify you friends, neighbors and next of kin. Find alternate routes! Stock up on milk, eggs and bread, and fill your bathtub with water.
I wonder if there are news helicopters circling the FA datacenter awaiting CNN-worthy disaster footage.

My Unicycling Fox Story
Posted 14 years agoFolks on Twitter wanted to hear more about the time I chased a fox on unicycle across a Missouri prairie, so here's the full story!
It was the late 1990s. I had moved to Columbia, Missouri after completing my bachelor's degree. Previously, I'd been into juggling a lot, and I'd started getting into unicycling while working on my bachelor's, but in Columbia I hadn't found other jugglers to pass clubs with, so I turned more to unicycling, and especially off-road unicycling. I discovered a great set of challenging single-track mountain bike trails in the Three Creeks Conservation Area, south of the city, where I frequently went to practice dodging and climbing on one wheel. Few people ever seemed to be there (and this still seems to be the case, based on online reviews I've found), but it was a beautiful bit of country. The parking lot was on a bit of a ridge that descended on either side through rough, craggy, winding gullies that connected to seasonal streambeds. There were a couple creek crossings where you were basically plowing through a field of grapefruit-sized rocks. I don't think I ever made it across them while actually riding the unicycle — too unstable.
http://www.singletracks.com/mountai.....ap.php?id=3672
Here's the trailhead. I'd usually descend through a trail that headed off east (right) of the parking lot, into that little square of wooded area (switch to satellite view) then down to the slopes and streams south of the parking lot. I'd work my way to a river that flowed year-round to the south-west of the parking lot, then ascend to the fields on the ridge above and back. In satellite mode, you can see the gravel maintenance road that traverses the string of fields following the ridge back to the parking lot.
Here's where the fox story starts!
One day late in summer, I was making my way back along the gravel road back to my car. The prairie grass was tall, and the road cut a trough through it. I was bookin' along, focused on getting back to the car, when suddenly a red fox pops out of the grass in front of me, on the right side of the trail. He (perhaps she) had been running and was totally unaware of my presence. I surprised him, to say the least, and he immediately turned to run away from me, down the trail. Since I was already moving in that direction, and since riding a unicycle means maintaining momentum or falling off, I naturally ended up chasing after him.
Sadly, the chase did not last for more than a few seconds. The fox wised up, realizing that continuing down the trail was not the best way to escape me, and with a flick of his tail, darted back into the grass on the right side of the road and disappeared.
Sadder still, it was too quick to even think of getting a photo. These days, if I were to get back into off-road unicycling, and if I had one of those helmet-mounted video cameras (like GoPro) rolling, I could have caught a few frames, but back then, there was no chance of preserving the moment other than in memory.
Yesterday's fox-sighting moment, which revived my unicycling fox chase memory, was a bit more prolonged. It was a cold (single digits above 0 Fahrenheit) snowy morning, perfect for biking to work because very few other people were on the bike trails and the snow meant I could finally put my studded tires to proper use. I was passing through a tiny bit of prairie near the Fort Snelling historic site, and I spied a red fox standing casually along the edge of the trail ahead of me. He (again, perhaps she) seemed puzzled, but hardly concerned. As I got closer, he trotted through the winter grass to a parking lot a dozen feet beyond, then turned to watch me pass by. I couldn't help but keep looking back as I passed. It was a nice healthy, fluffy red fox, with a light-colored face.
It's too bad I haven't had more such encounters more often than once every 15 years or so!

Heat and Hot Dish Submissions Officially Open!
Posted 14 years agoAnthrocon and Comic-Con are over. Time to start new projects!
Heat is our adult anthology of stories about love and romance. Submissions are now officially open for stories in the form of prose (i.e., short stories 4,000–8,000 words) and poetry. The submission deadline is Wednesday, August 31, 2011. This is a little over a month from now.* Submission guidelines and pay rates are the same as previous years. Please see www.sofawolf.com/submissions/heat for details.
Hot Dish is the working title for a new anthology project dedicated to showcasing Heat-style stories that are too long to appear in that publication. Over the years, we have come across some great stories in the Heat slushpile, but which we had to reject because of their length. Hot Dish is our attempt to give these stories their own venue. We have gathered a handful of stories from our previous Heat slushpiles, but we need more in order to fill out our anthology, so we are opening up for general submissions.
Submissions for Hot Dish should be 10,000–20,000 words in length. For more details, please see our submissions page: www.sofawolf.com/submissions/hotdish. Submissions will remain open until we have accepted enough stories to fill out the publication.
* No whining about not having enough time, please! "Heat" opens for submissions about this time every year, and there is no reason for anyone to wait until the official announcement to get started writing!
