post con, commission status, life status
Posted 14 years agoSo, first of all, thank you to everyone therian and I got to hang out with / have dinner with / art with / etc for the duration of MFF. We loved MFF so much last year, we had very high hopes for the con and they were totally satisfied. It is always a pleasure to see fuego, smallesttiger, leasara and tincrash, and this year we got to meet a bunch of people for the first time outside the internet, flir who is adorable, marcothecat who just spanks out such quality art that I was like aghast, and quaggy who has excellent business sense and is super cool to hang out with as well, haha. (PS sorry quaggy for the extreme marker envy)
There were also very few logistical or travel problems, unlike AC, except that American lost therian's checked bag for like a day after we arrived home (which contained a lot of my art supplies, and more important, the bun's feet and bodysuit) but once we got that back we were able to kind of shrug it off.
I had to take home very little work from the con, partly because I worked like a maniac, and partly because I had therian as my runner / helper lion to get me my sweatshirt and supplies constantly (was that hotel freezing or what, logistical fursuiter thing, I know, but still). Three items getting worked on post con are:
- badge for chaz (done)
- con special (colored cardstock comm) for redroseofdeath (done)
- digital 2 char color comm for kishin (done)
Last one should be wrapped up soon.
Other than that I am working on one big project for fuego and taki, and that's pretty much it.
I don't know what my commission status will be for a little while, since things are starting to ramp up with wedding planning. If I can find the time, I'd like to do some extra work to help fund certain things (like my dress) so we'll see. Please be advised that with the holidays and the wedding stuff, correspondence might be a little slow. I am going to do the best I can but a little understanding goes a long way <3
Thanks everyone, and have a safe pre-holiday season!

11 tips for con going artists
Posted 14 years agoGetting stuff ready for MFF is making me reflect on cons of the past, so in that spirit, here is some TL:DR
When I started selling stuff at cons (when I was like.... 15) I knew absolutely nothing about business practices or etiquette. Unfortunately this is not something that gets covered a lot, so I learned a lot of things by trial and error, or just by sloughing through my own stupidity. Here are some tips, tricks, admonishments, imploring pleas, etc. for people who want to have a good con experience.
1) Have a sample portfolio. Your book doesn't have to be super professional (a con is a pretty casual affair, an Itoya folder is a perfectly acceptable solution) but it should be neatly organized and include samples of all the services you are offering (colors, inks, pencils, badges, etc). I've found over the years that prints (and even pre-con originals, to an extent) aren't going to make you the bucks (unless you are very well-established, popular, whatever you want to call it). What they will do is give potential clients an idea of your talents/strengths, and sell you as an artist for commissions. A good commissioner will look through your book with his or her idea/character in mind, to see if you are the artist who has the skills to do their character justice. If you have a sample of something awesome enough to change their commission idea (like a really cool badge theme or excellent color skills) think of that as a bonus. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have good work samples; you would not trust someone to make you a wedding cake with no idea what their work looks or tastes like. You should not expect clients to extend you that kind of trust sight unseen.
2) The samples in your book should be examples of your best, most current, work. If after a couple cons something in the back of your book is starting to look not so good to you, take it out. The only reason to leave something in that you don't love any more is if it is the only sample of that kind of service that you have and you are too time crunched to make a better one pre-con (you won't have much time to do this at the con, unless you get there early).
3) If you don't fill your book with samples/originals/prints (I never do, I just don't have the time) mark where the last page is somehow. I use a blank page with "the end" in the middle. This may seem silly, but you will be surprised how many people just keep flipping pages, even if they're blank. This also helps if you do have blank pages because you've sold some originals and haven't had time to re-organize your book during working hours, but there are more samples there and you do want customers to keep flipping.
4) Do not beg for commissions. It is understood that you are using some/all of the cash from the con for your traveling expenses, most artists are, but you don't have to throw this in people's faces. I know this sounds mean but it is incredibly uncomfortable for your customers to be guilted like this, and it is also uncomfortable for your neighbor artists who are just trying to do business/have fun. This kind of wheedling also makes you look really irresponsible; you made a bad financial choice (going to a con you couldn't afford) and are expecting other people to dig you out. This is not the artist I would trust with my money.
5) Get everyone's contact info. I keep mine in a journal (I actually have to get a new book this year, the binding is broken on my old one). Get real names, email, phone numbers, and sometimes (especially on the last day) mailing addresses. If you have a customer who has done business with you before, get their contact info again anyway. People change emails and sometimes are borrowing a phone at a con, it is a good idea to get current contact info each time. This is a lesson I learned the hard way. You might also want to give clients your phone number so they can let you know if something changes. I have done this many times and have yet to have any problems with it. Sometimes your clients will even become your friends, and then they already have your number, haha.
6) When you get someone's number, ask if it is okay to text them. Some clients LOVE getting texts about artwork updates and some people don't have texting plans and would rather be called instead. I prefer texting because that way my client doesn't have to check his or her voicemail to get a simple message, and it can also be hard to hear people on the phone at cons (especially anthrocon, ugh).
7) Have your prices available on some kind of pricing sheet which is readily available. Be specific about what the price does and does not include (number of characters, backgrounds, etc). If you have never done a convention before, ask someone who has about typical prices. Try to take into account how much time you take, your media cost (like markers $$$), and your skill level, and price things accordingly. Remember, at a con, your time is at a premium because most customers want things done by the end of the day/weekend.
8) Set a monetary goal that is realistic for your prices, book enough work to meet that goal, and close your commissions. Taking infinite commissions seems awesome when you are getting paid, and not so awesome when you are busting your ass to finish all the work you are drowning in. Take into account that you will probably be busy post con unpacking, finishing work from your job that you missed, resuming your irl life, etc. Do no book post con work if you are moving soon, this is the dumbest thing you can do. I know because I did this. MFF is also a bad con to book post con work for imo because it is right before the HOLIDAYS which pretty much means everyone is busy as shit. If you don't meet your goal or shit isn't selling, man up and don't whine about it. There are good and bad sales days. Do not tell the artists around you that all these customers are Philistines, or bitch to your BFF artist buds that come by to get asspats from them. This just makes you look like a jackass, and it won't drive up your sales.
9) I hope your phone has a camera or the internet, because only responsible people print references anymore. Expect to be taking pictures of badges, ref sheets that the client only has one of, and references displayed on the the CLIENT'S PHONE. Do the best you can working off of stuff like this; I feel your pain dude. Please if you are reading this and you are a client, PRINT REFERENCES. Even if you print them in b&w and color them in with crayons. If you are giving someone a purely written reference, expect some deviation from your mental image, which cannot be photographed with a cell phone camera.
10) Bring your own art supplies. This seems so stupid to say but I have literally had people mooching colored pencils off me because they had none and no other means to complete color work (which it didn't occur to them to stop offering). Asking to borrow something like scissors, tape, or a knife is one thing, but asking to "share" someone's entire set of markers is something else. On that note, make sure your supplies are in some kind of bin or tackle box with your name and contact info on it, in case it gets lost. Do not put them in a plastic bag. This is seriously dumb, which unfortunately, I know from experience.
11) If you don't get the business you want, or if you did and you finished your work, just relax and take the time to enjoy life. Chances are you had to take time off from work to attend whatever con you are at, so keep in mind that this is your vacation. This is also one of the only times of year that you see a lot of your out of state/country friends probably, so spend time with them, and with your significant other (if both of you are furries oh god). Being in the alley is gratifying in its own way because you get to meet lots of cool people and everyone is oggling your art, but there is no substitute for good old fashioned downtime.

signal boost + constuff + commission progress
Posted 14 years agoFirst of all I just want to take a sec to point out that
dissy is offering a batch of commissions right now to help pay for some medical stuff. Her art is fab, especially the ladies :D, and from what I've seen her turnaround is pretty snappy. Here's a link to her journal for those interested:

Second I want to confirm that me and therian are planing on making it to MFF this year, so we hope to see you there! There's supposed to be some kind of TF community dinner/night out too. I don't think it's too solid yet but more on that as it develops.

One character, all digital, full color, some BG, TF is a must. 50 bucks.
Ratings are G-R.
[ADULT stuff is doable (for a $10 surcharge) but payment would have to be worked out via some other means (like money order) as I don't want to nuke my paypal.]
Comment with short descrip and references if interested, or note me if you feel more comfortable doing that. You must have a reliable email where I can contact you and send you the final file. If you want to send a more involved description, or have a special concern, please note me.
Payment (except otherwise agreed upon) is due after you approve the sketch, via paypal.
I reserve the right to pick the candidates that I feel I would do the best job on.

kousetsufox coloringone night only - CLOSED
Posted 14 years agoOkay guys, since I'm pretty caught up now and the only thing left on my plate is a big project that I'm kind of temp roadblocked on, I'm gonna take ONE commission to work on tonight, to work out some kinks artwise.
Vital stats:
- pencils with digital color
- digital delivery via email
- 50 dollars payable via paypal after lineart approval
- must be available tonight to approve lineart (I want to bust this out)
- one stage revision max
- one character, some BG elements if desired
- rating can be G to R (not in the mood for porn atm)
If interested, comment here (or note me if you're more comfortable with that) with a descrip of what you're looking for, at least one good, color ref, and a VALID EMAIL where I can send you attachments.
Please note I am trying a new thing and giving preference to people I've never worked for in the past, to try and give people outside my usual cadre of patrons (and I love you, I do) a shot (it seems only fair).
I'll close this after I've started workin.

update
Posted 15 years agoJust letting people know I'm not dead. Here is some seasonal small talk, just between me and you, internet.
MFF was fun, as expected. Thank you to everyone me and therian got a chance to hang out with, it was very chill and awesome. People have been asking about our next con, so the deal is we are looking at attending FE in Toronto in March but no promises are being made.
I am working my way through my obligations slowly but surely. I'm trying to balance personal/fandom art with working on my professional portfolio (have a job, trying to level up and score a better one) and other stuff.
Also weirdly I am sick for like the third time this year which is bullshit because usually my immune system is ~*AWESOME*~ but this year it has totally crapped out on me.
We have been getting a lot of snow, which the ten year old in me thinks is weee and the twenty four year old in me thinks is the suck. Last week we got three feet of that lovely celestial dumping, which, no I don't care if you omg love snow, three feet in two days is overkill.
Did you pick your holiday charity yet, FA? Talk about the hardest decision of the season :/ There's like toys for tots type things everywhere (at least around here) and I always end up wishing I could do more. I ended up doing Child's Play again because, holy crap what a good idea, plus it makes me :D that nerds can do something so nice. Our local children's hospital is registered on amazon so I picked them up a video game. Also did one of those ones where you take the tag off the tree, buy the present requested for the person listed, and send it back wrapped. Now I have to wrap a pillow pet. D: I guess I'll have to try to find a box for it, haha.
Am I totally lame for wanting my own pillow pet? Don't answer that.

Anyway. Gearing up for MFF, still. Me and therian are flying to the windy city on thursday. I am super excited! Who else is going?
Also, next kiriban at 99,999. First person to send me a cap gets a request once I get back from the con.
EDIT:
shaytalis got the nines. Two people also sent me the 100k, so I'll see what I can do.

Have a TF oekaki, community. Membership is moderated to save me the headache of sorting through a ton of spam submissions. The website requirement is just to assure me that you are a functioning person. You can use an art sample, or just a link to something you've done on the web (non art if you want). I am not trying to impose any kind of skill requirement, it's just troll deterrent.
Edit: To clear up any misunderstandings, you don't have to be an artist to register. Anyone who is of legal age to view adult material (XXX submissions are allowed) can join, in order to be able to view the pr0n.
Hopefully great fun will be had by all :3

Everything ended up being fine, I was just stressing about some life crap (what else is new, haha). One of those things was buying a new car which now that it has actually happened is awesome.
I haven't arted much in the last couple of days since I've been a little under the weather and work has been busy (as always, ugh). I plan on rectifying that situation this weekend, hopefully. I definitely need to gear up for MFF, so it might even be back to traditional media for a couple of things.
So in short, life is exciting, and art is on its way~!

one night only - CLOSED
Posted 15 years agoCLOSED CLOSED CLOSED
Dude, so I came into like one night's worth of free time and I just finished sketching like a four page comic commission thing. I'd like to take one (maybe two) commissions in this style:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4408935
for completion pronto while I'm waiting on approval for other stuff. This means, one character, simple setting, traditional lines (pencil) and digital colors. Message me with a descrip of what you want and a viable email addy if you're interested, will close when filled. Ideally I'd like to get the lineart approved tonight so being available to make that approval would be greatly appreciated.
As always, if I get a ton of responses I reserve the right to pick which ones I know I can grand slam, etc.
(PS, price is $45, sorry I am an idiot and had to edit that in)
(PPS, slots taken~!)

Posted 15 years agoSo I'm looking at the top of my page and it's like, creeping towards 100 thousand hits. Just wanted to take the time to say thanks, etc. Also, I'm going to offer giftart for 99,999 (or the closest I get, send me a cap plz). Winner gets a full color thing of their choice within reason.
I also just finished all the traditional things from AC, and finally mailed almost everything, thank the lord. So now the only commissions in my queue are digital.
Speaking of, here's the list of what I've got cookin':
Coloring the rest of a comic for newenglander
Sketching a comic for fuego
Coloring a TF pinup for the-pro (cowgirls ftw)
waiting on info for a mystery commission from fallout (?)
I also have a few personal projects I'm kind of fiddling with intermittently, as always.
Um... what else? Me and therian are planning on going to MFF in the fall, which should be awesome. I cannot tell you how excited I am that I don't have to touch markers again until November, haha.

post AC wrap up (finally)
Posted 15 years agoSo Anthrocon was awesome blah blah, you guys and girls who were there know it ruled. Special thanks have to go out to leasara tincrash and swatcher for being excellent dinner company and all around great to hang out with, lunarkeys and nyomi for chilling with me and the boyfriend in the zoo and at the alley, catmonkshiro for the badge trade and everything else. Also gillpanda is effing awesome and suuuuch a nice guy. starpaw and iffriel are so unbelievably adorable and me and therian are lucky to have them as friends <3
Super special thanks goes out to everyone who took the time to say hi or stop by in the Alley or the Zoo, and also to everyone who bought anything from me or entertained the thought of doing so, haha. AC is always this big ball of exhausting amazement and time after time it is the upbeat, friendly, talkative and just generally awesome members of the TF and furry community that make it so much fun.
Super bonus thanks go out to Provolovere, Zax, and everyone who organized the TF jam which was FANTASTIC and every year I look forward to it more than anything. The chill atmosphere, camaraderie, and just hell yeah attitude of the TF community is so great, and every year I am more impressed.
Ultra super bonus <3 go out to my supportive, amazing, etc. boyfriend therian, the best lionboy a tigergirl could ask for. <3 <3 <3
I am currently working on the traditional stuff I took home from the con, which will be mailed as it gets done. At this point absolutely all the traditional stuff is at least penciled, most of it is inked. Here's the progress chart (I'll edit this as I get further on these)
-Phoenix's badge is getting colored.
-Kale's badge is inked
-Xerxes' commission is getting colored.
-Varamu's badge is done and ready to mail.
-Leasara's commission is done and ready to mail.
-Keys' commission is done and ready to mail.
-Newenglander's commissions are done and ready to mail.
I am looking forward to finishing these, should have some good stuff to post in the next few days if I can scan these without too much derp.

oh god another AC meme
Posted 15 years agoSince last year I didn't do it, this year I will. AC meme, go!
• Where are you staying?
The Omni.
• What day are you getting there?
Checking in on Thursday.
• Who will you be with?
therian (my main squeeze)
• Do you do free art?
Depends on who you are / if we are chilling / how busy I am with commissions. Probably no.
• Do you do trades?
See above. If we hit it off or are already good friends, probably. If not, probably not.
• Do you do commissions?
Yep. Gonna be in AA (hopefully due to the lotto) Friday and maybe Saturday. This is the only time of year I do traditional commissions, so inks, markers, pencils, etc. instead of my usual digital mishmash.
• What is your gender?
Female.
• How old are you?
I'll be 24 at AC (my bday is June 2)
• Can I talk to you?
Hell yeah. Out of all the things I enjoy at the con, hanging out with people is pretty high up there. Me and Therian are always looking for people to hang with, eat dinner, chill and art jam, etc. As long as you are considerate and friendly, we will be all good.
• Can I touch you?
Unless we are like, buds, then no. Handshakes or whatever are fine, bu please don't think less of me for just... you know... valuing my personal space.
• Can I hang out with you?
Probably, unless I am at the table and mad busy. If I am like short or busy, it is not because you are not a cool guy or gal, it is just the nature of the con.
• How can I find you?
Therian is planning on suiting as his white rabbit char Zanni, so he might be the one to look for. I might suit in the fantastic head Ther made for me if I can get some paws and a tail together. Out of costume wise, I am just a random chunky brunette. The best way to recognize me is the shirt (I always wear my lame tshirts at AC) or my badge. I'll also be at Artists Alley, like I said, so you can probs find me there working frantically.
• Can I buy you drinks?
Depends on where you want to hang out and other time constraints. You don't have to buy me anything to chill with me, but coconut rum and pineapple is my drink of choice, haha.

Posted 16 years agoHey dudes and dudettes,
Since I got a few commissions done, I think I am gonna take two more. I have open two spots for full color, single character, single image. The cost is $40. As always, commissioner gets digital high res file. Half of the $$ is due after you okay the sketch, half after completion. Payable by paypal or money order.
No, you cannot buy both slots for a sequence. No sequences right now, guys.
Anyway, ratings from G - R are fine. TF is fine, you know how I do. If you have any questions feel free to comment.
If you're interested, please note me with a summary of what you want, plus an e-mail address where you can be contacted. I usually get more replies to these than I can do, so I apologize in advance if that happens.
I'll update this with commissioner list when spots are full.
UPDATE - full.

Posted 16 years agoI know people are anxious about me opening up commissions again, but I have a ton of shit to get through first. SO IN THE MEANTIME I wanted to let you guys know that this guy:
watercolorwolf
has a commission special running right now :
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1082718/
that is seriously like the best deal evar. He is THE BOMB illustrator and you guys and gals might want to check out his arts even if you're not in the market for a commission, because they're certainly worth checkin'.
As far as content goes, I'm not sure what is/isn't up his alley, but asking never hurt anyone. I don't do much in the way of pr0nographies anyway (just that most horrible of niche interests, TF, haha), so I figured sending my clientele his way wouldn't be a horrible idea.
As a caveat, I don't know how many slots he's takin', so you might want to get in on this sooner than later.

commandment one: work, damn you
Posted 16 years agoSo my first tablet lasted from when I was 14 until my junior year of college, and was not very good, quality wise (it was an oooold wacom graphire)
My second tablet (my current) I've had since then, so like, three and a half years? Three years, probably. The quality is good, when it WORKS.
Internet, when you have to pray over your tablet and sacrifice chickens to make it do its thing, is it time to bite the bullet and buy a new one?
I really don't want to spend the money, but I was thinking of getting an intuos (I have always cheaped out and bought graphires). Does anyone have any thoughts on them? I need something functional with good pressure sensitivity that is going to last, that I can use a whole lot.
Oh, dudes, PS, I am on a Mac. So Windows related problems are not a.. um... problem.

Posted 16 years agoUPDATE: spots are FULL.
Looking to pick up a couple of quick commissions to juggle with the sequences I'm doing. So, if you're interested, listen up :3
The type of pics I'm offering this time are shiny commissions! Like slick stuff with lots of highlights? Then you'll like these. The only rule (besides my normal content restrictions) is that the pic idea has to contain some shiny element.
of course that means vinyl is in, whether it's a lot:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2073801/
or just a little:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2571030
this kind of commission is also perfect for... say...
naughty nurses:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2554074
or chocolate:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2538145
And many, many other things.
As always, single character full-body, non-detailed background elements. Digital only, commissioner gets the high res. Full, glorious color, of course!
> The price is $40, and there are two slots. <
First TWO people to comment AND drop me a note with a (suitable) description of what they're looking for get the spot. References are greatly appreciated.
I'll edit this when slots are full.
also, as a note, payment by paypal and money orders only
