Honesty Really Is Its Own Reward, part 3,897,634
Posted 8 years agoYou have GOT to hear this one. I SWEAR THIS IS 100% ON THE LEVEL. This LITERALLY just happened,
I entered a contest back on Black Friday sponsored by Chevrolet.
Today I get a call that tells me I have won.
No joke. No trick. I seriously won one of the grand prizes.
"Sir, you will get a check for $10,000..."
"Thank you, Lord."
"You will also get a Restaurant.com card for $1,000..."
"Thank you, Lord."
"You will get a first class airplane ticket to Atlantic City, an all-expenses paid reservation in the Presidential suite for three days and two nights, and two first-class tickets to (she mentioned some show but I didn't get the name; to be honest I didn't care)..."
"Thank you, Lord."
"Now just one question. You do have a major credit card not issued by a bank, right?"
"I have a Visa debit card, is that good enough?"
"Oh! I'm sorry, that's a condition of winning the contest. Someone else will be getting all that stuff instead. Well, have a nice day!"
"... UNIVERSE I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW."
Yes, that just happened. I had all of that -- and lost it as quickly.
Between this and the times I had the cash troubles at local banks and stores, and everything that's gone wrong this year, I have to wonder why I haven't jumped off a bridge laughing like a madman as I plummet to a sweet and liberating death.
Seriously, though, I could go without winning anything ever. I know I'm a loser. But to have THAT happen?
Merry Christmas, everyone!
EDIT: I've been informed this was almost certainly a scam. So it looks like I lucked out. But wow I've had a lot of these crooks calling the house of late.

Guess who died?
Posted 8 years agoBoth Charlie Manson and Mel Tillis died quite recently.
I could rejoice over a vicious, murderous nonentity like Crazy Charlie dying, or I can remember a singer-songwriter-comic like Mel.
Goodbye, Mel, you entertained quite a few people. And you made me laugh. Thanks.

They have some great options there, and they seem able to match most any price range. I made up a pair of sample figurines and they look great to me.

The Bat-Signal finally went out
Posted 8 years agoAdam West, star of the big and small screen, has died.
Everyone remembers Family Guy and the 60's Batman and the Diniverse Batman appearance as the 'Grey Ghost', but me? Just to be different I'll remember him as the photographer in the classic Three Stooges film THE OUTLAWS IS COMING. He was great as their boss there.
Thanks for everything, Mister West.

Dan Flahive putting Space Wolf up online
Posted 8 years agoHe really is, over on DA.

He said he intends to do this until he has posted all three intended issues of the story, including the unpublished third one. Since some folks who read this journal can remember his artwork, I thought they might enjoy looking at the comic again.
I found Space Wolf a great story back in the day, and it's still amazing.

Uncle Charley just died
Posted 9 years agoI just learned I lost my last living uncle, Charles Brader, who died just a few days ago.
I had to learn through the newspaper because for some reason whenever a relative of mine dies or gets deathly ill not one single relative calls us or lets us know in any way, shape, or form.
It had been several years since we last saw him -- whenever we tried to drop by his house, everyone was out. But still, I wish someone had bothered to just make a quick phone call, you know?
According to the paper the service will be this Saturday but I doubt I'll attend.

Kreepy Klowns Kommit Pennsylvania Kapers
Posted 9 years agoNo fooling, we're having a Phantom Clown Incursion out in the Gettysburg area of Pennsylvania! There have already been a dozen or so accounts posted by normally trustworthy folks I know of guys dressed as clowns rushing out of the woods in the area at local cars, waving knives and laughing maniacally.
Given that people pack guns out there and some of them are now cruising for the crazed clowns, unless these guys really ARE from John Keel's superspectrum they'd better knock it off or Bozo's gonna get a boo-boo.
I've also heard that this is some REALLY weird publicity campaign for a remake of the movie 'IT'. In which latter case man are they ever being fools. I mean, what's the first thing you'd do if some cackling loon came charging at you waving a knife?
Be interesting to see how this all ends.
Oh, BTW, if want to read about the first Phantom Clown Invasion:

And a link with more information: http://www.pennlive.com/news/2016/0.....s_unsettl.html

GoFundMe link to aid children of fandom murder victims

(I can't think of any way to make that title better...)
In any case, there's a GoFundMe for the kids of Vixy and Cary Yost. Please spread the word and donate if you can.

Missing Person

I have to say that the whole thing sounds very odd to me.

Now that was rather strange
Posted 9 years agoJust had something almighty strange happen here.
I took the garbage out, and I could hear sirens in the distance -- fire, cops, ambulance. I also noticed a VERY bright light in the sky growing larger as it came at the house,
I watched and saw it was a helicopter, one of those little two-man eggbeaters, with a floodlight on. It came over the rooftops, maybe ten or twenty feet over the roofs, and for no reason I can see focused that light right straight on me,
It just hovered there keeping that light right on me, I didn't know what to do so I just froze and watched.
It hovered and kept shining the floodlight at me for maybe 2-3 minutes and then they took off, 'skimming' the houses as they flew away eastwards.
It felt very strange and I have to wonder what it was all about.

Where do the faves go?
Posted 9 years agoDoes anyone know why every now and then you get a note that something you posted has been faved, yet when you go to look in the gallery the art/photo/story is nowhere to be seen? Is this just some hiccup in the FA servers or what?
EDIT: To everyone who responded, thanks.

Christopher Lee, dead at 93
Posted 10 years agoI'm sure everyone has heard the sad news about Sir Christopher. Whether it was in The Last Unicorn, Lord of the Rings, Horror of Dracula, Airport '77, or The Wicker Man, he was always amazing. Fare well, Sir Christopher, and thank you for everything.
And when I shared this news at my local library, I got blank stares.
I said he played' the greatest vampire in all of movie history '.
"Oh, you mean the actor who played Ed Cullen is dead?"
I really had no words.

So... Did some shopping tonight and I see that the ATM has some odd screen flashing asking if the user wants to clear message to proceed with another transaction or not.
I needed to use it for something small so I cleared it, and?
A nice thick pile of $50 dollar bills comes out. Forty of them.
I mention to one of the managers passing by that this machine is throwing out cash, and he says, "Well, then take it!"
I try to get help from first the help desk and then another one nearby for paying bills and such. Both of them are crazy busy.
It slowly dawned on me that I could shove that $2000 there in front of me in my pocket and walk out with no one the wiser.
So of course instead I take it over to a front end manager and give it to her with an explanation of what happened. She looked at me blankly and said, "You could have just left with this."
"Yes, ma'am, I know. I'm giving it to you because it's not my money."
"No, seriously, you could have walked out the door with this and we'd never have known what happened to it."
"Yes, ma'am. I. Know."
She laughs and walks off shaking her head. I see to my groceries and on the way out pass by the office and see through the glass door her talking to the two store managers. I listen and I hear: "And he actually gave it back when he could have left with it -- what an idiot!" When I consider that I returned $2000 I kind of have to agree with that sentiment.
Look at it this way, whatever dumb thing you may do today, you weren't THAT dumb!

Farewell, Mister Nimoy
Posted 10 years agoIt seems everyone has heard the news by now, but I will add my two cents anyway. I liked watching Mister Nimoy, even if I knew him better as the host from "In Search Of" than as Mister Spock.

Vicky Wyman needs your help
Posted 11 years agoVicky Wyman, one of the original and best artists of furry fandom, is in the middle of a rough patch right now and needs some help. She's been evicted on next to no notice and needs to hire people to move her belongings before they are taken from her.
There';s more information here.
If you can give her some cash help or if you live close enough to volunteer, please do consider it. Fandom as it is largely exists because of her.

How do you ban someone?
Posted 13 years agoFrom commenting on your page or in your commissions, that is?
We're getting an increasing amount of troll accounts on the site and it can get tiresome to have to wade through a dozen or more cretinous remarks of the "yIff in HeLl furfag" variety.
Any useful advice for the technically-impaired would be appreciated.
Thank you.
