FAQ about the "Come Dream With Us" ArtPrize Exhibit
Posted 11 years ago-What is ArtPrize?
ArtPrize is a three-week-long international art competition located in Grand Rapids, MI, where half of the prizes are awarded by a panel of judges and the other half are determined by public vote. www.artprize.org
-Why Should I Enter?
To our knowledge, there's never been an attempt as big as this to bring together some of the most creative minds in anthropomorphic art. We want to see just how big this can get and, hopefully, win some prize money for our efforts.
-Do I have to use my real name?
No. The entry will be registered under "The Anthro Arts Collective" and your real name does not have to be tied to it. We may only require your real name should any prize money be won.
-What kind of Artwork can be entered?
Any kind! It can be a drawing, a statue, a musical arrangement, a special fursuit, any combination of the above, or something completely different altogether. There are only three rules (and a couple suggestions):
1. The artwork cannot infringe on any third-party copyrights (no Pokemon, Disney, etc.). Original characters (or permission to use another person's non-copyright-infringing character) only.
2. Artwork must be family-friendly/considered "PG-13". (Tasteful nudity is allowed, extreme gore and explicit sexual situations are not. If you're not sure, send a description or sketch of your idea to us and we'll let you know if it's acceptable.)
3. Artwork should tie in with the theme of dreams and dreaming. The piece does not have to be brand new as long as it fits the theme.
Suggestion 1: We think it would be interesting to have a "thought bubble" be a recurring element in most or all of the pieces. This is not a requirement though; we don't want anyone to feel like they have to tweak a pre-existing piece if they don't want to.
Suggestion 2: Be creative with the theme of dreams and dreaming. Not all dreams happen while we're asleep, nor are they always pleasant.
-What if I can't travel to Grand Rapids?
As an artist, you're not required to attend ArtPrize to be eligible to compete, but your piece must be able to arrive in Grand Rapids prior to ArtPrize and remain there for the duration of the competition.
-Can I sell my Artwork at ArtPrize?
Yes, in fact we encourage it. ArtPrize doesn't take any sales commissions (though our venue might; we'll let you know if that's the case), so you'll be able keep the whole amount you sell your piece for. Let us know if you want to sell your piece when you submit it and we'll help you jump through the necessary hoops. (Just note that should the installation win the Grand Prize, all sales will be considered void.)
-I want to come see ArtPrize, but hotels are expensive!
That's ok! If you're from out of town and you're registered as an ArtPrize artist, you can seek out free housing offered by ArtPrize volunteers. All the info for that is here: http://www.artprize.org/get-involve.....-opportunities. If you're going to be in town for our ArtPrize furmeet, we have a couple of hotel rooms booked for Saturday night and are more than willing to share. Just let us know ahead of time so we don't accidentally cancel them and then find out that someone needs a room.
-I'm not an artist. How can I help support this?
If you're able to come to Grand Rapids, you can register to vote for "Come Dream With Us" (and any other piece at ArtPrize that strikes your fancy) and help us win one of the public vote prizes. If you're a fursuiter, you can enter yourself as a performance piece (venue size permitting) and interact with the crowd. You can also join us for our yearly ArtPrize furmeet the first weekend of ArtPrize.
If you're not able to come to Grand Rapids, you can show your support by spreading the word about our exhibit through Facebook, Twitter, elaborate smoke signals or whatever way you'd like to communicate. You can also donate to our upcoming IndieGoGo campaign and receive perks for supporting us.
-So what would happen if we won?
If we win any amount of prize money, it would be awarded in one lump sum for us to do as we please, whether we decide to divide it or donate it to charity.
If we win the Public Vote Grand Prize, some of the pieces from the installation may be kept to be displayed in an encore exhibition at the Grand Rapids Art Museum that would run through ArtPrize 2015. Any pieces up for sale would also have their sales voided.
-Ok, I'm convinced. I want to submit a piece. What do you need from me?
Awesome! All you need to do is note us with the following information:
Artist's name:
Title of piece:
Medium:
Size of piece:
Description of piece:
Special requirements (A/V, lighting, etc.):
Sketch (optional):
Is it for sale? Y/N If for sale, what's the starting price?:
If the piece is not completed, would you offer a spot in the piece as an IndieGoGo perk? Y/N
Thanks for your interest!

ArtPrize 2014 And A Special Opportunity
Posted 11 years agoA new year, a new set of dates to remember for ArtPrize. This year ArtPrize will take place from September 24th- October 12th, 2014. Venue Registration opens on March 10th, Artist Registration starts on April 21st, and the yearly ArtPrize Furmeet will happen Sept. 27th-28th, the first weekend of ArtPrize (as per usual).
However, this year I'd like to spearhead something a little different. For the past couple years, many people have asked us "Are you guys part of ArtPrize?", thinking we were part of an exhibit. This year, I want us to be able to say "Yes" and actually enter ArtPrize. I've been toying with the idea for some time, and if we have enough people interested and able to commit, we can make it happen.
The tentative name for the piece is "Come Dream With Us" (a title I stole from Granite Wolf's FCN '13 video). It'll be comprised of three parts: a large 2D picture, a special video edited for ArtPrize, and at least one fursuiter performing for the crowd in the evenings each day of ArtPrize. Expenses would be covered through an Indiegogo campaign, and any prize money won would be donated to charity (winning the public vote prize of $200,000 would make it one of the largest non-convention donations in the fandom).
If you'd like to help make this possible (be it as a performer, handler, artist or anything else), let me know. If you can't make it, spread the word by linking back to this journal. We only have a couple months until April 21st; let's see if we can make this happen!

All You Need To Know About The 2013 ArtPrize Furmeet
Posted 12 years agoIt's gonna be big, I can tell you that for sure.
Who: ALL THE FURRIES!
What: Third Annual ArtPrize Furmeet
Where: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Meet in front of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum
When: Saturday, September 21st (meet up at 10 am) and Sunday, September 22nd (time TBD).
Why: Gotta continue the trend of making ArtPrize more awesome; it's practically our civic duty.
What's new this year?: I'm glad you asked!
- It's longer! First off, this is now officially a two-day furmeet. Can't make it on Saturday? Show up on Sunday. Need to duck out early on Sunday? Get your fill on Saturday, then hang out as long as you want on Sunday. Want to suit on Saturday and leave it at home on Sunday? That's perfectly fine too. By expanding to a two-day meet, this will hopefully allow more people to enjoy ArtPrize however they wish.
- Multiple paths to explore! Since it was a bit difficult keeping 20 people all together last year and I anticipate just as high (if not a higher) turnout this time, there will be at least 2 different groups that will be exploring ArtPrize, tentatively split between suiters and nonsuiters. Suiters will take a path that runs through the more open places (Rosa Parks Circle, the BOB, etc.) while the nonsuiters can travel to the smaller, off-the-beaten-path venues that may not be suit-friendly (small galleries, restaurants, Frederik Meijer Gardens, etc.). Each group can take mid-afternoon food at their leisure, and a large group dinner for everyone after the meet will happen as well.
-Our faces on TV! Wood TV 8, one of the local stations here in GR, always broadcasts from the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) during ArtPrize. I'm currently planning on having us there among the crowd for their noon broadcast on Saturday (or Sunday if the weather's bad) so we can give an interesting shot for the news and be able to get into the GRAM before the line gets too long and the building gets too hot for suiters.
Anything else?: Invite lots of people; I've reserved a few rooms at the Holiday Inn on Pearl St. (across from both the Public and Ford Museums) for anyone needing crash space.

2013 Artist's Registration Is Open!
Posted 12 years agoYep, registration for artists has begun. You have between now and June 6th to enter your artwork into ArtPrize. Connections between artists and venues won't begin until April 29th, so you have a chance to look over all 186 venues and decide which one is right for your piece. The popular ones tend to fill up fast though, so the earlier you submit your work the more likely your chances of getting a venue you want.
What you need to know:
-Any kind of art, in any medium, made with the last three years is eligible to be entered.
-There is a $50 registration fee, though collaborative entries cost $100
-You're responsible for getting your work installed, whether you come out to GR and install it yourself or ship it out and have local volunteers install it for you.
There's a lot more answers to your questions over here too: http://www.artprize.org/help/artists/faq/
Good luck!

Dates To Remember And A Nod From Time
Posted 12 years agoTime Magazine listed ArtPrize as one of five festivals not to be missed in 2013. You can read the article here: http://style.time.com/2013/01/17/fi.....-miss-in-2013/
Also, registration dates have been posted! They are as follows:
Venue Registration runs from March 11-April 11. This length of time is for businesses and organizations within the ArtPrize boundary (found here: http://tinyurl.com/artbounds -Frederik Meijer Gardens is the only venue exempt from this rule) to register as a venue. Venues can range from large places like the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to restaurants and auto body shops.
Artist Registration runs from April 22-June 6. Registration costs $50 (if the work was a collaboration, an additional $25 per collaborator applies). Any artwork in any medium made within the last 3 years is eligible to be entered. Artists can connect with a Venue anytime between April 29 and June 20, though some venues will fill up faster than others.
Of course, ArtPrize itself runs from September 18-October 6, with the ArtPrize furmeet happening September 21-22. More details on that as the date gets closer.
Stay artsy, my friends.

Happy New Year!
Posted 13 years agoWell, it's 2013, and even though GR is covered in snow right now plans are still in the works for ArtPrize and for the furmeet as well. As stated in the last journal, the meet will take place over 2 days (Saturday, September 21st -Sunday, September 22nd) to allow more people the chance to enjoy ArtPrize. For those who would like to actually submit artwork to ArtPrize, the artist registration dates have not been posted yet but I will post a journal when the dates become available.
Here's to a great 2013!

2012 ArtPrize Wrap-Up And Plans For The Future
Posted 13 years agoWell, ArtPrize 2012 is in the history books. My apologies for not keeping up on this as I should have; life got in the way. It was certainly eventful for the city of Grand Rapids and for us furries as well. We had 20 people join us for the ArtPrize furmeet (including 5 suiters) and even found a couple furries who didn't even know there was a furry community in GR until our group showed up. (Sometimes you find the fandom, sometimes it finds you.)
The ArtPrize website has the dates for the next four years already posted, and needless to say I'm already making plans for next year. Between my own observations and feedback from other furries, I've come up with a few ideas for next year and future years:
1. The furmeet will now always take place on the first weekend of ArtPrize; it will also become a two-day furmeet. My reasoning centers around ArtPrize itself and the convenience factor for attendees. I'd like for the furries who come to the meet to also register and vote for artwork while we're there (make the furry voice heard!). I'm still figuring out how best to handle voter registration as well as how to let suiters be able to vote, but I will update this account when I have a plan. Making it a two-day meet simply allows more people to come when they can, be it one day or both days. It also allows us to see more artwork and lets more ArtPrize-goers see the suiters.
2. I'd like to see more out-of-town and even out-of-state furries at the meet. We already know ArtPrize is a big deal in GR and it's gotten national attention as well; it'd be nice to show some of our far-flung furry friends this event up close and personal. Which brings me to...
3. While I liked seeing such a big turnout at this past meet, it was kinda hard to keep everyone together. Therefore, if it looks like there will be a lot of people showing up, I may split the group up and give each small group a basic walking route to use (or not use). If that happens I would arrange for all the small groups to eat in one place during the midafternoon meal break (which I forgot to factor in this year, something I won't be forgetting in the future).
4. I want to see more furry artists try to enter an exhibit in ArtPrize. It's no secret that the fandom has talented artists aplenty; this would be a good way for them to gain exposure and maybe win some money at the same time.
If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd like to hear them. In the meantime, don't forget to upload your pictures and videos, and we hope to see you at the next ArtPrize furmeet on Sept. 21-22.

Where: ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI
Meet at Ah-Nab-Awen Park in front of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum (they have free parking.) Map
When: Saturday, Sept. 22nd, at 11 am. This will give us enough time to suit up, wait for any stragglers, and maybe get a group photo in before ArtPrize officially opens for the day at noon.
Why: Because ArtPrize is awesome, and we'd make it even more awesome.
Tentative Schedule:
Saturday
11 am: Meet at Ah-Nab-Awen Park.
12 pm- 6 pm: Fursuiting (weather permitting) and wandering around ArtPrize.
6 pm- 9 pm: Dinner, hotel check-in, relaxing. (Feel free to eat wherever, though if you do eat downtown the restaurants will be busy, hence why I figured in 3 hours for wait/travel time.)
9 pm- Drunk o'clock: Invade Rumors Night Club, party at hotel. (Rumors is having a foam party on this day, so wear your suit if you're feeling REALLY brave. Cover is about $5, will double check this.)
Sunday

Late morning: Brunch somewhere.
Rest of day: Check out more of ArtPrize and see pieces we might not have gotten to see on Saturday. Rain date for fursuits.
****HOTEL INFO***
I've currently booked 3 rooms at the J.W. Marriott downtown for Saturday night. Should more than 15 people wish to stay there, I'll add more rooms. Should we need 10 rooms or more(!), I might move to a different hotel depending on whether or not we are able to have a group rate for only one night. Let me know by Sept. 15th if you want crash space at the hotel.
4 people per room = approx. $63 per person
5 people per room = approx. $50 per person
If you'd like to reserve a spot at the hotel, send me a note (here or on Facebook if you know my name) and I'll be sure to add you to the list.

Posted 13 years agoArtist Registration for ArtPrize will close on June 7 at 5:00 pm EDT. There's still time to sign up and get paired up with a venue, so don't delay!
Just like last year, there will be a furmeet for ArtPrize, only this year we plan to take it up a notch. There will still be fursuiting and fun times, but there are plans in the works for a private party at HopCat and possibly even a few rooms available at a local hotel for late night booze-drinking.This will take place either the first or third weekend of ArtPrize, but we'll keep you updated as things get smoothed out and confirmed.
Stay fuzzy!

Update: Venue Registration Closed!
Posted 13 years agoVenue registration is now closed; check all of them out here: http://www.artprize.org/venues
Artists, remember that registration starts on April 23 and can be done here: http://www.artprize.org/get-involved/artists/
If you're not able to enter, consider spreading the word around to other artists who may be interested. $200,000 is nothing to shake a stick at, not to mention the exposure that comes from being in a competition of this scale. Any artistic medium is welcomed.
We are also making preliminary plans for some furry-centric events to coincide with ArtPrize. Fursuiting will definitely happen on at least one weekend, with a dinner reservation afterwards. Any other ideas?

If you're not able to enter, consider spreading the word around to other artists who may be interested. $200,000 is nothing to shake a stick at, not to mention the exposure that comes from being in a competition of this scale. Any artistic medium is welcomed.

Welcome!
Posted 13 years agoYou've stumbled upon FA's unofficial source for all things ArtPrize®. This contest is unlike any other in the world. Artists from all around the globe converge on Grand Rapids, MI for over two weeks of artistic dialogue and stunning displays. Unlike other art contests, ArtPrize® is determined by public vote, with the top prize amounting to $200,000. Any form of art, from oil on canvas to people on stage to birdseed on gelatin (yes, this was an actual entry), can be entered. This video shows just a small bit of ArtPrize®: http://vimeo.com/30250079
The purpose of
artprizefurs is to encourage this community of artists to enter ArtPrize®, as well as to keep everyone informed of any furry artists that enter and furry-related events that may occur around the same time.
Artist registration opens on April 23rd; until then you can sign up for an account at www.artprize.org and browse available venues.
