Post-Con report for Midwest Furfest 2015
Posted 10 years agoHowdy everybody! I hope y'all had a peaceful and fun Christmas!
As promised yesterday, I wanna give an account of how I experienced MFF (and my trip to the US) this year.
neonoae and I got to spend a few days together at his place before we drove to the con. The night before MFF started was actually his birthday, and we celebrated with a nice dinner. My present for him was a new smartphone. Plus, during those days and the week after MFF I got to see a lil more of Noa's college, which was pretty cool :3
Well, when we got to the Hyatt on Friday, we couldn't check in at first because the room wasn't ready yet. "No problem", we thought and headed to registration to get our con badges and then explore Artist's Alley and Dealer's Den a lil. Only downside was that I had to take my coat with me and was a little warm because of that ^.^
First shout-outs go to
cooner whom it was nice to see again and Noa and I got our first sketch commissions from. He is a very nice guy and it's always fun to talk to him, briefly as it may be cuz he's busy ^.^
Next stop was at
donryu's table for a picture. That white tiger is sure nice to talk to and we ran into him a few more times during those three days. I would love to hang out more with you, dude! Maybe next time?
Also met up with
xids whom we DEFINITELY did not hang out with often enough! What was that about? We need to see more of you, Xids!
Also ran into
stripekazama who gave us a cool bracelet with our names on. Thank you so much again for that, bro! It was great to see another European fur there. Sorry we couldn't chat more, but I hope you had fun in Artist's Alley.
When Noa and I finally wanted to check in to our room, the desk clerk told us that my credit card wasn't accepted. That was a shock, I tell you! Noa's card also hadn't enough money on it, so we faced two options: either pay in cash or don't get a room and drive back to his place every night (which is an hour away). I asked the desk clerk to try out another credit card reader, but she refused. I thought that was pretty arrogant of her and not good customer service. We tried taking out the cash from the ATM, but it didn't allow the full amount. Noa and I were pretty shaken up about it and discussed what to do. Eventually he suggested I try out my European debit card on the ATM. I had my doubts but luckily for us, it worked! So we payed for the room in cash and checked in. PHEW!
In case you are wondering: My credit card worked perfectly fine in every other instance after that! My guess is the card reader was not working properly.
I wanted to attend a few writer panels this year, but thanks to the whole ordeal with the room we missed the first three. Oh well, still attended "Erotica: Adult writing" and it was interesting, but I didn't get that many new information out of it.
The only other venue we attended was "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind", which is sort of a must-see at every MFF and we weren't disappointed.
Other furs we ran into and hung out with a few of them were
makaio (it's just great hugging him ^.^),
draftstallion2005 (it was fun chatting with you),
spyketyranno as well as
maximus-ursus,
nachuro and
hallan - the latter three we had dinner with on the last night of the con. I got to ride in Maximus' new muscle car (blue like him) and damn... that engine has an awesome acceleration, I might as well have creamed my pants! <3 <3
All in all, what I found most interesting about MFF 2015 is that it broke its attendance record again with 5606 people this year, but I still get the feeling we got to talk to fewer people and the last few years. So, I'd say it was a good con, but not the best (that's still 2014 for me).
After Noa and I got home on Monday, we spent a few more wonderful days together and went to see the new James Bond movie (I love Christoph Waltz and he didn't disappoint!) before I had to fly back to Germany.
Now I'm looking forward to next Summer when Noa will come here :3
Thanks for reading!

A more detailed travel and con report will follow after I get home ^^

I know I haven't posted any updates for three months, but what happened to day is a damn good reason to blow the dust off this journal!
The US Supreme Court ruled today that bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional and states have to recognize SSM's performed in other states.
That is a major victory for the Equal Rights Movement and Americans should be really proud of their democracy today!
I am still hoping that after the vote in Ireland and now the decision of the SCOTUS the pressure will increase on the German government to finally upgrade those civil unions we have here to full blown marriages. There is just no rational argument speaking against it anymore and our neighbors and allies have already proven that SSM does not mean the end of Western civilization.

And now I'm gonna take a nap =^.^=

Furries at the Academy Awards?
Posted 10 years agoSeriously, what was up with the possum during the musical number for that song from the Lego Movie?
On a side note, I was very disappointed that Guardians of the Galaxy was nominated for only two Oscars and din't even win one of them. Interstellar won Visual Effects? Really? After last year's Gravity, that was old news!

Posted 10 years agoOy, do you hate it too, when you can't get rid of a song that's stuck in your head?
Right now I'm running "Take Me to Church" by Hozier in an endless loop to get it out of my system. :-D

Shooting Star or Falling Star?
Posted 11 years agoEver since Guardians of the Galaxy came out on DVD and Blue-Ray, I have been pondering something.
Chris Pratt built himself a good reputation for being a cast member of Parks & Recreation and got known to a wider audience as Peter "Starlord" Quill. His star in Hollywood is certainly rising.
But as many of you might know, he seems to be the lead in the fourth Jurassic Park movie (named "Jurassic World"), at least according to the trailer.
Now the first movie was just a fantastic cinema milestone, despite its many minor flaws. The second movie was good, but still a Goldblum-fest, and the third was... oh well, some people call it "meh", other people deny there even was a 3rd movie.
Soooo.... Jurassic Park 4 is kind of Schrödinger's Movie here... it could be a great film, worthy of the first one, or it could be a huge flop equal to or even worse than the third. If it'll bomb at the box office, will that be a huge blow to Chris Pratt's career? I'm afraid it might.
What do you think?

Post US and MFF Report
Posted 11 years agoOh wow, it took me two days to recuperate before I was able to write this journal. It's overdue.
On November 24 I flew out to the US of A to finally see
neonoae again and spend some amazing two weeks with him. We had a great time together and even went to Chicago. There we went all the way to the top of the "Tower Formerly Known As Sears" and had the bad luck of it totally being surrounded by white fluffy clouds. Dang! When we got there it was still sunny and clear, but all those clouds formed while we were at the Hard Rock Cafe and afterwards when we were waiting in line for the Skydeck of the tower. So yeah, no great view of Chicago from above, but it was still funny, standing on a ledge 103 floors above street level. ^.^
Also, while I was there, I got to experience my first real Thanksgiving. Noa prepared a delicious meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie for dessert - it was sooo good! My woliger is an excellent chef <3
Of course, another highlight was MFF 2014. It was great seeing so many furs again. Special mentions go out to
maximus-ursus and
weaselzero with whom we had a very nice dinner and bumped into them repeatedly over the three days we were there.
makaio was always fun to hug when we ran into him.
I got some great sketches from
donryu and
cooner which I will post here on FA later. We hung out a lot with
xids, ran into
dineegla and his husband
musclewolf and I met one other European furry,
stripekazama
Of course, no journal of MFF 2014 should leave out a mention of "The Incident".
Noa and I had just seen the Uncle Kage and 2 the Ranting Gryphon Charity performance, which was over at 1 am on Sunday morning, and we were talking to Terminotter (I don't know his FA username), when all of a sudden a member of the con staff ran in and told us to evacuate the hotel because there was a fire alarm. We walked outside, murring and grumbling, because many people including me and Noa were wearing t-shirts and it was about... oh, I think 36 degrees Fahrenheit? Anyway, we were freezing! Outside, we watched as more and more people poured from the hotel onto the sidewalk area and were asked to move across the street to the convention center there. We ran into Maximus and a few other furs again and decided to cuddle up close against each other to keep warm. After half an hour or more we were finally let inside the convention center to warm up. Luckily, it was more than large enough to fit 4,000 attendees in there. Meanwhile, word spread around the chlorine gas got released in one of the staircases, and we saw more and more firefighters and a hazmat team arrive at the scene.
We found a spot in the back of the area and settled down, prepared to endure the night there. Some people were lucky and had their coats with them so they could use them as pillows on the concrete floor. After a while,
holliehyena found her way to us. Poor gal was evacuated from her hotel room in her jammies, but she was being tough about it. It was admirable! Hollie and I had a great talk and found out that we're both huge M*A*S*H fans!! Not many of those around, so I was quite happy about it! :-D
At around 4 in the morning they finally gave clearance for us to move back into the hotel, so we made the procession again through the cold, across the street into the warmth of the Hyatt Regency. When Noa and I finally returned to our room, we could still smell a faint odor of chlorine in the air.
The next morning a lot of tired faces were roaming the halls, understandably. I put on my Predators jersey and headed to the team photoshoot, which luckily was pushed back to 1 pm (I actually nagged Maximus about it the night before, because we all wanted more sleeeeeeep and not already be downstairs at 11 am like the original schedule intended us to).
The rest of the Sunday was mostly spent socializing as well as some quality "alone time" with my Woliger, before I had to return the rental car and leave for the airport. For the first time in three years, Noa was able to accompany me there, for which I was very grateful.
Unfortunately the plane back to Copenhagen (my transit destination) was crowded and the seat next to me taken, so I had to hold back my tears all through the flight. I was feeling very depressed and lonely, because I had to leave Noa behind again.
After a day of recuperating, today I went back to work. Reality feels strange now after spending two wonderful weeks in the States. I am very much looking forward to the next time I get to travel to Illinois!

MFF meme... it's like a tradition
Posted 11 years agoBecause every year and because I can go this year!
Where are you staying?
At the con hotel
What day are you getting there?
neonoae and I will probably be arriving on Friday around noon
How are you traveling?
To the US? By plane. To the convention? By car, from Noa's place :-P
Who will you be rooming with?
Three guesses! Hint: He starts with N and is a woliger.
How is the best way to find you?
Keep an eye open for a very cute couple with the badges of Noa and Asyr.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I don't know yet, but I am thinking about actually going to a writer's panel this year.
What do you look like?
6'3", dark blond, glasses, goatee
Will you be suiting?
No, I don't have a suit
Do you do free art?
Yes, but no one wants it. I can only do stick figures XD
Do you do trades?
I would be interested in a story trade!
What is your gender?
Male, and a 100% homosexual. Sorry, ladies!
How tall are you?
Oh there is a seperate question for that? Already answered it above: 6'3" or 190 cm
Can I talk to you?
If you speak English or German, you certainly can.
Can I touch you?
It depends on where you want to touch me and with what you want to touch me.
How can I find you?
Aren't a few of these questions kinda repeating? Anyway, just keep and eye out for me and Noa, we'll always be found together.
Can I visit your room?
Same rule as with vampires: only if you're invited. And if you can find it
Can I buy you drinks?
Always.
Can I give you stuff?
As long as it isn't trash you just want me to throw away for you...
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Sure, but ask first, please.
Are you nice?
It depends on the time of day, how tired I am and how much soda I have in me XD
Do you have an artist table?
If only I were an artist! Probably not even then, I wouldn't wanna be confined to the Artist's Alley.
Will you be going to parties?
Maybe, if Noa and I get invited to one.
Will you be performing?
Only if I had a fursuit and could sing better.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Wave, tap my shoulder from behind, yell "Asyr"... there are several ways.
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
Roaming the con with Noa.
What/where will you be eating?
Don't know yet, but kinda like this con, eating at Giordano's and Outback's seems to become a tradition.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
If we ask you to come with us.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Of course! I don't have anything to hide. You'll be disappointed, though: all sketches in there are PG 13 :-P
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
If you offer it to me and I say yes. Or if I hire you to
Can I take your picture?
Sure, I'm not picture shy as opposed to so many other people. You don't even need my permission for that. ^^
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
Meet people, go to events, get a new t-shirt and new sketches and have fun with Noa :3
Where are you staying?
At the con hotel
What day are you getting there?
neonoae and I will probably be arriving on Friday around noonHow are you traveling?
To the US?

Retracting an earlier journal: good things are happening
Posted 11 years agoAbout four months ago I posted a journal on my vacation time this year and how my new job won't allow me to stay in the US long enough to attend MFF this year.
Well, that's changed.
Originally I couldn't stay past Dec 5th because I needed to fill in for a co-worker right after I get back from my vacation.
But now they're hiring new people who start in November and who can fill in for at least two days, that means I was able to convince one of my bosses to grant me two extra days. That means that now I'll be able to fly back to Germany on Dec 7th and can go to MFF from Dec 5th to 7th with my boyfriend
neonoae , whom I also get to spend two more days with, and that's just majorly awesome! <3

Posted 11 years agoSo finally FA is back online again ... even though it was just... three or four days? I did notice how it was disrupting my surf habits on the internet by not being available.
And I guess we all can agree that it was not just a huge coincidence that FA, SoFurry, Furbuy and e621 were all under a DDoS-attack at the same time. It makes me wonder... was someone targeting furries for a specific reason? A furry hater or maybe just a frustrated ex-fur with too much power over IT-systems? I guess we'll never know.

Raccoons and skinless bodies
Posted 11 years agoHeyyyyy everyone, it's time for the Tiger's (non-weekly) review of the week!
Last Sunday I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy with a few friends. I might be late to the call, but who wants to be mainstream anyway? I was the only furry in the group, so I might've been the only one who wanted to see that movie just because of Rocket Raccoon. Although I was able to convince the only other gay guy in our clique that Rocket is great because he's voiced by Bradley Cooper (yummy!).
We all really enjoyed that movie, it had everything that a good action flick needs: great sense of humour, interesting characters and character development, a standard (nothing too confusing) epic save the world plot and of course awesome special effects! I'd give it five stars out of five.
Of course, if I'd had to pick a favorite character, it'd still be Rocket. Because I'm biased, but also because he got some of the best lines :-D
Groot came in as a close second, though.
Now for the second part of the journal's title:
On Thursday I went to the Body Worlds exhibition in Hamburg. In case you haven't heard of it before: it's an internationally traveling exhibition that showcases all (and I mean all) aspects of human physiology and anatomy through the use of plastinated, real human corpses and body parts. it's actually pretty cool, the whole bodies are arranged into poses (the chess player, Atlas, a cyclist, etc.) with parts of the body opened so you can really see how taught muscles are stretching over certain areas in those positions. And of course with an open chest cavity you can also look at how the inner organs are arranged. Of course there are also single parts on display like blood vessels, the central nerve system, organs like the heart, liver, male and female reproductive system, and so on. It was really educational.
I was struck by a few waves of Reality is Unrealistic though. Sometimes I had to remind myself that I was looking at real bodies and body parts. One skeleton, for example, looked a lot like the ones made of plastic that you know from biology class in high school. Maybe playing violent video games or watching shows like Bones and CSI makes you rellay desensitized to the supposably "gross" aspect of human anatomy. I don't know. Or maybe it was just because it really isn't that big a deal what happens to us after death. So the exhibition also invoked a reflection about philosophy, sort of. Nonetheless, Body Worlds was a very interesting and educating experience.

That Dalai Lama is an interesting man
Posted 11 years agoThe spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is visiting Hamburg at the moment, and today I got the opportunity to see the man from up close.
One perk of my job is that I got to participate in the Dalai Lama's press conference, where he endured the questions of the present journalists. ^^
Afterwards I got to observe his public speech in front of 10.000 people. He spoke of his favorite topic of universal, secular ethics and said that people tend to forget that most religions have in common that they preach love, peace and compassion. Despite of that, various violent conflicts rage in the world presently, misusing religion as motivation. He also claimed that ignorance is the main reason for the "seed of evil" within humans and that more education would be the best way to counter it.
I have to say that I was fascinated by that man. He is 79 years old and still so jovial, with a friendly and honest smile and he can't resist to crack a joke every few minutes. Considering what he had to go through in his life - pushed into the role of the Tibetan leader from an early age on, forced to flee his homeland in 1959 and not being able to return there even once in the past 55 years - he still manages to radiate positive energy and optimism. Someone from the audience even asked him where he gets his energy, to which he replied: "While it is too late for my generation, I will always have hope that the young people from today will be able to make the world a more peaceful place."
At the end, I stood up with everyone else and applauded him. I am sure he will continue to inspire other people to do good in this world.

Life Update / No MFF this year
Posted 11 years ago*blows the dust off his FA journals* Ah-aah-AAHCHOO!!
*sniff*
Well, since the last journal was a meme and the one before that was not an April Fools' joke, I figured it's time to post something more substantial.
I've been working in my new job for a little bit over three months now, and I have to say: the pay could be better, but the job is definitely fun. I work as an editor for a local newspaper and one of the perks is that I get out of the office every now and then to meet new people, talk to them and write down their stories. Of course, that involves a lot of driving around, but at least I get my expenses reimbursed ^.^
Now the downside is that I didn't get any vacation time granted for the week after MFF. I will still fly to the US this year to see
neonoae and I am soooooo very happy that I get to spend two weeks with him (YAAAAAYY!!!), but missing MFF (I'll leave the day the con starts) is still a bummer
Oh well... there are always more MFFs to come...
(*time skip to December 8, 2014* MFF staff: Unfortunately attendance was below 100 and we can't afford to ever do a con again, sorry guys! - Asyr: NOOOOOOOOO!!!)
x.x
I have a weird mind at times...

I'm spreading the word
Posted 12 years agoRegarding all the FA drama lately, all I have to say about it that anyone who hasn't done it yet, should give 2's journal about the whole thing a good read. It's true and worth your while.

That's all I have to say about the issue.
