AgamemnonlandFBOTM September: Artslave
Posted 14 years agoSeptember 2011
So FBOTM has been revamped with a couple new questions and here to test drive them is
artslave. In a world of sweet, fluffy fursuits, this builder’s costumes stomp in and strike fear into the foamy hearts of furries. ArtSlave has become popular with semi-realistic/realistic and often frightening costumes sporting impressive muscle and digitigrade padding. After some conversation I have come to find that ArtSlave, like her costumes, is very, very cool.
Describe your history in the furry fandom.
Actually, I got into furry via another furry. When I was super little I would wrap up towels with rubber bands and wear them around like a tail, and I just thought that people with tails was the KEENEST idea. After a few years I stopped doing that, of course. Sometime in high school, I ran into some bloke I'd known from both frequenting a local gaming shop, who had a fairly convincing wolf tail that he wore around everywhere, 24/7. Eventually I popped the question and did "that" google search. Found a bunch of furries in my area who did social meetups and so forth, and they all turned out to be really stellar folks, so I hung around for a while. I really love meeting new and interesting folks, so conventions are a huge plus for me. I've been to other conventions before, but I really adore the personal creativity in the furry fandom. Other conventions laud adoration on canon, but furry is really the only fandom I've seen where folks design their own characters, worlds, and so forth. Between that and the fact that it's populated with some of the best artists I've ever seen, I ended up sticking around :D
Describe your fursona/s.
I'm an avid roleplaying nerd, so I've got a filing cabinet of characters somewhere, but I really only have one I consider my fursona. It's a towering, daemonic thing. Just a generic monster, I guess. A friend of mine(Midori) drew up a sketch of a monster for me one day, that I loved so much so I went with it. It's pretty laid back for a monster, never really going out of its way to visit wanton destruction on villages or anything(Unless there's a village or townsfolk in its way or harassing it with pitchforks, of course). Most of the time it lives under the beds of troubled children and befriends them, helping them cope with life and so forth. Horrible, unapproachable monster, totally a good person inside though.
When did you build your first costume and what was it?
Oh man, actually when I was two or three I "made" a costume.. and by that I mean I stapled netting to the arms of a pair of green fleece pajamas and put a latex raptor mask on. Obviously this was a dragon with a majestic wingspan. Not terribly impressive but, hell, I was three.
The first real costume I ever built was a set for a husbandry event(Where you and your horse had to have matching costumes), where I made a wolf mask out of faux fur and cardboard(Big bad wolf), and I made a cloak and hood for my mare(Little red). I didn't get started sewing fursuits until late 2002.
How many fursuits have you been paid to build?
Oh jeez. I would venture to say more than 50, but less than 100? I'm not entirely certain, to tell you the truth. I don't really keep track of this sort of thing. Quite a few, though.
What is your construction method of choice?
I like balaclava and foam method, with some tweaking with different densities of foam. Its comfortable, cheaper than resin, and lightweight, with no uncomfortable pieces of plastic or anything to jam in your face.
What is your average price range?
Full suits start at $1200, Partials at $850, heads at $450. I can't offer an average because most folks who come to me to build something for them want something different, so alot of my stuff has muscle padding, or a full suit or prop armour or is made entirely out of fleece, or something, to make it pretty non-standard. But for regular fursuits, those are pretty much what you'd be looking at :)
Who was your favorite to build?
Definately my lizardman. I got to work ALL in fleece, which was a first, and got to build a full muscle suit- everything, back, legs, arms, OH! And TONS of airbrushing. That was my favourite part XD. Because it was a personal suit I got to do 'whatever I thought was good at the time', so got to experiment with alot of new techniques and tools, so it was a big springboard for me working on lizards- I've got a ton of techniques I can apply in the future. I like building personal stuff for that reason- if I find a technique that doesn't work, it's not a huge deal, I can just go back and fix whatever I messed up later, rather than messing up a customer's order. So I try to dump as many new ideas onto the few personal suits I churn out, so I can experiment all at once. :D
What are some challenges you have had to overcome as a builder?
Time management. Totally time management. People don't tell you that when you do something you love you might forget how long you've been working and end up working an extra 3-5 hours a night. This doesn't sound like such a bad thing but when you start to think you're superman and can work 12 hour days, 6 days a week, you get overloaded or backed up REALLY fast. So time management is one of those skills I'm still trying to master. Obviously there's technical skills, I still can't use a sewing machine to dart for the life of me. But those are much easier to get over, a little practise and things become doable. Time management needs more than practise. Like.. a bachelor's in economics and a personal aid(My cat tries, but she just isn't up to snuff.. caught her sleeping at her desk AGAIN. I've gotta fire her).
What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?
I think the market is saturated with folks who do cartoon style costumes and hyper realistic costumes. I cater more to the scary/freaky/gross/monster crowd. I don't see many people who do scary suits as a running theme, so I think I've got a pretty solid corner on that market. People should choose me only if that sort of thing floats their boat, while I can stumble my way through making other styles of costume, 'rar' suits are definately more in my comfort zone, and if someone's looking for realistic or cartoony, there's definately a ton of folks out there who do it better. BUT, if you want that zombie/werewolf/daemon/hellhound/mind flayer/evil-psychic-tire that you've always secretly craved, my prices are pretty reasonable and I'm always available for quotes.

FBOTM August: Kilcodo Costumes
Posted 14 years agoAugust 2011
Kilcodo Costumes
Kilcodo has only been around for three years but in that time has created over 50 costumes as well as numerous custom-made fleece animal backpacks. Kilcodo is also available or 2D art commissions such as concept art and con badges. Costumes from this builder are notably cute, expressive and colorful. So here to satisfy your curiosities is Kilcodo of Kilcodo costumes.
Briefly describe your history in the furry fandom.
I was introduced to the fandom in 1997, actually by a local news stations'
report on FluffMuck. I had always been into anthropomorphism as a kid
growing up, but that was of course before I knew what furry was. I read a
lot of RedWall, invented fan characters and stuff like that. By 1999 I was
uploading art to a VCL account and meeting friends on mucks, and soon
enough I was selling artwork commissions, which enabled me the financial
freedom to travel to cons and purchase art supplies. 2005 was my first
convention, right after my eighteenth birthday. Things have pretty much
blown up since then!
When did you build your first costume and what was it?
I made my first costume in the spring of 2008. It was a goat, made with
the plastic-mesh method, which I now consider a really difficult technique
to use for a first-timer, and it was immensely frustrating. But by that
summer I had completed Roxie, my first balaclava-based fursuit, and I just
kept on going after that!
How many fursuits have you been paid to build?
I believe at this point it is at 56. I have pictures of all of them in the
gallery here (listed below).
What is your construction method of choice (i.e heads)?
I sew my own balaclava bases, made from breathable 90% cotton blend. Then
I use brand new high-density upholstery foam for the features, then all of
the seams on the face and other parts of the costume are machine-sewn with
the seams pinned so no fur gets caught in the seam. I airbrush the heads
for definition and transition from one color to another. I do a lot of
"follow-me" eyes on my heads as well as the typical two-dimensional
"toony" fursuit eye. Right now I am using resin casts for the teeth, and
working on resin casts for noses, claws and eyes also.
What is your average price range?
Heads start at $600, an average partial is $800, half-suits are $100 and
full-body fursuits are $1350. These are base prices and get a little more
expensive if the character is complicated or has lot of different
colors/markings.
Who was your favorite to build?
I have to say I'm really fond of the way Kobol Tiger turned out.
What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?
I've been told that my fursuits embody my art style. I try really hard to
give my costumes a lot of character, and also to make sure that they are
very durable and well-made. I don't use patterns for things like hair and
eyebrows, rather I make a totally new pattern each time, so each costume
has a different personality. I don't cut corners in my construction and I
only use the highest quality materials, a *really* good sewing machine,
and lots of careful pinning and cutting. I also offer a 2-year warranty on
all costumes for repairs and updates.

FBOTM July REDUX
Posted 14 years agoJuly 2011
Cooling things down in muggy July is The Karelia Fursuits all the way from Denmark. This builder is just starting out in the business and is on the way to creating a distinguished position in the Fandom. The Karelia is the likely to be one of the only Danish builders, and subsequently the country does not seem to have much of a furry scene. Eufuria, one of Denmark’s furry conventions (aside from Furstastic, debuting this year in Northern Denmark), has been cancelled until 2012, and The Karelia Fursuits is keeping the Danish branch of the Fandom alive. Scandinavian furs, listen up!
Briefly describe your history in the furry fandom.
I have for several years been a furry, and felt that I needed to go further with this passion for everything furry. It mostly started,
through my art (I have made art my entire life, and I´ve always prefered to draw animals/furries )
When I learned more about the entire furry-culture, I really knew that this was something for me. Fursuiting gives you so much,
(destressing, having fun, being social, etc) and that really gave me the motivation to go fursuit myself, and build fursuits
for others so they could enjoy as much as I do. In Denmark(where I live) fursuiting is still not well-known, and we aren´t many (yet).
It it my biggest dream, to help spread the love for furries/fursuiting in Denmark, and to help more and more become a part of this.
When did you build your first costume and what was it?
My first real fursuit was "Albastru the Blue Leopard". It was my first time making a successful fursuit, that not only I enjoyed,
but others did too. And it´s now been sold to a friend of mine. ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5744640/ )
I built my first fursuit around 7-months ago. So I still have a LOT to learn :)
How many fursuits have you been paid to build?
1 so far. And I now have a commission on a partial suit, + paws for a panther suit. I am really greateful that others wants my work ^^
What is your construction method of choice (i.e heads)?
That depends on what it´s going to be. I prefer to make a base of foam, and build from that.
What is your average price range?
I try yo make is a cheap/reasonable as possible. I am not a pro, but by getting more and more commissions, I´ll learn more, and improve,
and hopefully become a well-known builder. My prices depends on the materials, and a small payment for my worktime. A partial suit
is around 400$ and up. (Depends on the materials of course! ^^)
Who was your favorite to build?
That´ll be either be my new character "Pochi" or "Tux the Dog" (which was made for my boyfriend)
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5975284/
What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?
Hmm, the unique thing is, that all my suits are very different from each other. I try to give each character a great personality,
and give it a very unique design. I don´t use the same base/design for the characters. That way, it´ll help me keep them different.
Why people should choose me? If they want to get a very personal suit, and help a new builder, then they should pick me ;) All the support
I´ve gotten so far has been a great help, and the interest my works get, really helps me keep the motivation to work hard! It it my greatest
dream to see someone outside of Denmark use my suits. Knowing that others can enjoy what I´ve made, is really special!

FBOTM July: The Karelia Fursuits
Posted 14 years agoJuly 2011
Cooling things down in muggy July is The Karelia Fursuits all the way from Denmark. This builder is just starting out in the business and is on the way to creating a distinguished position in the Fandom. The Karelia is the likely to be one of the only builders in the country of Denmark, which does not seem to have much of a furry scene. Eufuria, Denmark’s only furry convention, has been cancelled until 2012, and The Karelia Fursuits is keeping the Danish branch of the Fandom alive.
I try to make is a cheap/reasonable as possible.

FBOTM June: Feast of Dreams Interview (FNN)
Posted 14 years agoBriefly describe your history in the furry fandom.
While I don't consider myself a proper furry, I have a lot of furry friends. I go to FC every year, and own several of my own mascot style costumes. I enjoy many aspects of the fandom (costuming, art, and imagination). I made my first animal type costume in 1998 (it was a Cats costume replica, from the musical.)
When did you build your first costume and what was it?
My first costume was probably Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride (made at age 10 or so). My first cats costume has already been covered. I then went on to make a fox in the cats style. (This is the costume responsible for the notorious "jumping fox" photos from FC2004: http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....7623494432552/ ) As for my first mascot type costume, that would be Finwood, my otter. I made her in 2005. http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....7623126078572/
How many fursuits have you been paid to build?
I tend to build more pieces than full costumes. At this point, I've honestly lost count. If I had to guess, it would be somewhere close to 50.
What is your construction method of choice for for head building?
I like to work in foam on a balaclava base. I also enjoy cold foam. I like to keep my heads really compact, and a nice mix of realistic and toony. My heads look like my art.
What is your average price range?
You can find my pricing info here! http://feastofdreams.fatcow.com/mas.....mmissions.html
Who was your favorite to build?
My gosh, hard question! I really love Trixie the Huskie and Leeloo the mutt dog:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....7623128741801/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....7625008405456/
Nox is one of my personal characters that I have had for years and years (she's been around in my written work since I was in elementary school.) She was a unique challenge because she is all black. She's feline in form, but she's actually an alien from the Star Wars world called a Mashi Horansi. Since there aren't many "pictures" of them out there, I had fun creating my own feline species based on lots of different critters. http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....7625350147204/
I'm also quite excited about the wraith I am creating for my husband and myself (life sucking space vampires from the Stargate Atlantis show.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/feasto.....s/tags/wraith/ Alas, no finished shots of those two at this point as they are still in progress!
What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?
I am a costumer by trade, with a formal education, and a HUGE range of skills. I love working on accessories and clothing to go along with suits. I don;t use a lot of on-line tutorials, and as a result have developed by own build style. I'm always inventing as I create. I believe my style has developed into something unique, and I am a personable, professional business woman.

Fursuit Builder of the Month: Adorable Foxie
Posted 14 years agoNota Bene: I didn't see the 4000 characters rule and for now I have to put this interview on FA, sorry about this!
May 2011
Hello furries! For the very first Fursuit Builder of the Month, I caught up with Clarissa St. Clair of Adorable Foxie and asked some questions about her business. This article is the first of many “Fursuit Builder of the Month” pieces that I plan to do.
First provide a brief description of your history in the furry fandom.
Like most members of the furry fandom, I've always enjoyed 'animal stories' and cartoons, but I never knew there was a community out there just for all that! I first got involved with the furry fandom in the mid-90's, when a friend introduced me to the Redwall book series. I loved them, and I wanted more! I joined Redwall-based role-playing groups (on AOL, and Redwall MUCK), and my friends and I would illustrate our role playing sessions. This led to our posting them on furry-related art sites, where we met other people that also made up characters and stories. Eventually it progressed to local furry get-togethers and attending conventions. At my first convention, Anthrocon 2002, I fell in love with all of the costumes and just had to start making my own!
When did you build your first costume and what was it?
My mom and I have always worked together to come up with fun costumes for Halloween, so I am no stranger to costume-building. As far as my first fursuit goes, it was a black fox named "Blackout" - creative, I know. I built the costume over the course of 2002-2003, and I had her ready to go for Anthrocon 2003!
How many fursuits have you been paid to build in total?
To date, I've been commissioned for about twelve or thirteen, with a couple of those still currently in the works. In addition to that, I've also sold all personal costumes I've made except for two, bringing the total of costumes sold up to eighteen. I didn't take on any commissions until about 2008, which is when I began to dabble in building a costume for a local friend, to be able to tweak it and make fixes as necessary before taking commissions full-time.
What is your construction method of choice for for head building and why?
My method of choice is an all-foam construction, with a balaclava (head-sock) liner. To me, this is the most comfortable method to use, and it looks well-finished. I started out building my first few costumes with plastic mesh or even on a bike helmet, but these heads seemed to take too long, risked damage to the costume (because mesh doesn't bounce back, while foam does) or to the wearer (yay pokey bits!) but in the end, foam seemed the way to go for me. In my opinion, this method of construction allows me to work the quickest without sacrificing quality, comfort or detail.
What is your average price range?
Currently, my prices range from about $350-$500 for a head, $500-$800 for a partial, and $950-$1200 for a full suit, including the cost of shipping. The final price all depends on many things, like character markings, and finishing details like claws or paw pads, etc. My prices are currently a little on the low side as I build up my commission portfolio, so they are subject to change in the future.
Who was your character favorite to build?
I would have to say, it's a toss-up. I really love how Kenai Kitty came out, he's a serval with a TON of hand-sewn markings. The detail came out great! It took me about two months, working full time start-to-finish to put it all together, but the results were worth it. My other favorite character was Kiera Dracorex; her owner provided some fantastic reference to work from, and the color scheme was unique and fun.
In all honesty, though, each new costume I build tends to come out on top as being "my new favorite," because I am able to watch my skills as a builder progress, and each one comes out better than the last in some way!
What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?
Since I am still trying to find my groove for doing this work full-time, I put 100% of my focus on the current project at hand, and nothing else, so each full costume gets my undivided attention while I am working on it. I don't crank out multiple costumes at a time, assembly-line style. I also tend to share photos of my works in progress on my Facebook and Twitter pages, and listen to feedback provided by not only the customer, but also people that watch my progress on social media sites, or even my friends and my husband when I'll ask them, "What can I change?" I highly value the feedback of people that have already purchased work from me, change things that they recommend changing, and constantly work to better myself as a costume builder.
So, while some costumes may take a little more time to be made, rest assured that I am doing my absolute best to provide you with a top-notch product in the end. If there are changes or adjustments that need to be made after delivery, I'm more than willing to work with the customer to be able to ensure their costume comes out on top as far as aesthetics, comfort, and durability are concerned. I'd much rather provide a well-made costume that will last for years to come, than to cut corners just to meet a deadline. I still have some of my early costumes from 2005-2006 running around out there, going strong, and that durability is something I strive for with each new costume I make.

Shut Up Because You Are NOT The Antichrist!
Posted 15 years agoSo about a year ago, my brother, mother, and I were at a furneral for one of our many family emebers (Irish-Catholic, we're a small army). My big bro hates all aspects of any religeon and makes no effort to understand it. Even I, a hardcore atheist, has respect for religeon and spirituality and I see how it helps believers. He spent the whole service giving the preist and alter boys dirty looks and all I could think of was "Stop being such an asshole! We are at a woman funeral, show some damn respect!".

Urban Dictionary Meme.
Posted 15 years agoBorrowed without asking from
fiver16, who always seems to have the best memes.
Rules:
Go to www.urbandictionary.com and type in your answers to the following questions.
Post a definition it gives you.
1.) Your name?
Caroline
Caroline is extremely fine - Most Caroline's have a nice booty - And in some cases use a golden calculator to divide - Fellas love her - Ladies hate her.
Aww shucks you guys...
2.) Your age?
14
The age of sexual consent in CANADA. When you turn 14 you can be fucked.
Hmm, better go learn French!
3.) One of your friends?
Alice
mushroomist
The funk, spice, and sugar of my dreams. She's both my vanilla and chocolate. She can be crazy and wild, she can be sweet and calm. She's all slim, but with booty. She's the one you only see when you glance the second time, but she's also the one you won't ever want to let go. She is the ingredient that makes me whole. :3 And no, I didn't write that!
4.) What should you be doing?
Writing
a kind of love that thats annoying as hell and makes you want to pull your hair out. It keeps you up and night, and it makes you think about the world entirely differently. Its a passion that is unlike any other. It overides everything in your life. Pshh, I have better things to do than love my family and friends.
5.) Favorite color?
Orange
The colour which vain assholes turn after a session in the tanning salon; Often confused with Hepatitis
Haw haw!!!
6.) Birthplace?
Illinois
A state that feels more like a large city surrounded by farmland. Most people who live in this state feel that it is divided into two areas--Chicago and Downstate. Although the official state capital is Springfield, just about everything gets done in Chicago. In fact, some out-of-staters actually believe that the capital of Illinois is Chicago. Because of this, and many other things, most "downstaters" resent everything and everyone from Chicago For all of you that don't live in Illinois, this entire passage is true.
7.) Month of your birth?
January
The best month of the year with February right behind.when the coolest/hottest people were born. Also the prettiest time of the year..snow & winter time. Who doesnt love January? This is one flattering meme.
8.) Last person you talked to?
Jack
To steal, or take from an unsuspecting person or store
9.) One of your nicknames?
Voices (this wasn't an entry so I chose the next best thing).

Contraversial Survey.
Posted 15 years agoBorrowed without asking from
fiver16
[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
Sure.
[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
Nope, I like my white teeth, I'm not ruining them after four years of braces!
[03] Abortion: for or against it?
For. This is a personal and private issue that should be decided by the mother for both her and her child's benefit.
[04] Do you think a country would fail with a female president?
No way! Uterus Power!!!
[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
If the prisoner wants to die, as in assisted suicide.
[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
No, potheads annoy the crap out of me.
[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
Go have all the fun you want, just remember, It's Not Just Love, It's A Lifestyle. Wink. Wink.
[08] Do you believe in God?
No.
[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
YES! Girl-Girl Power!!!
[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
I sympathize with them, but I really think that the Mexican government should get it's shit together because illegal crossing is not fair to the REAL immigrants who are waiting years to get into this country.
[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
Only if someone responsible is taking care of the kid. I.e, her mamma.
[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
Yeah, pretty much every other right is awarded to you at eighteen.
[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Mixed feelings. I can see both sides equally.
[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
No. This goes along with my death penalty thing. For someone who feels the need to die but doesn't have the means to carry it out should have the option.
[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
I was spanked a few times as a wee little tater-tot and it didn't really affect me much, but I think there are better means of punishment than that.
[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Sure, any flag to me is just a piece of fabric.
[17] Who do you think would have made a better president? McCain or Obama?
I didn't really have an opinion when the election was going on or now. But I personally think that Obama had the racecard advantage.
[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Nope.

If you scroll to the bottom of the results screen, you will find that 22.19% (the majority with "Bisexual leaning Homosexual" the minority of 9.77%) of furs fid themselves "Completely Heterosexual". Ummm.... WHAT?! I know maybe ten straight furs TOPS.
So this prompt the question, what's with all the openly gay people in the fandom?
I think the best explination is the security of your furry alter-ego and fursuit makes people unaware of who you are, and I think that openness and friendlyness in the best part of the fandom, the "who cares what you look like under the fur?".
