Initial impression of Hobbit:BotFA(spoilers!)
Posted 11 years agoI shouldn't have done it. I trusted Peter to at least do this one right. I WAS SO WRONG.
(warning:cursing ahead, spoilers)
I do hope a little is fixed in the extended edition, but I fear most of it will be more motherfucking elves and less dwarven focus. >U
Also all that Bagginshield crap that was teased for the depraved fans. For fuck's sake. Can't we keep things platonic friendship AT ALL? Does no one understand or value platonic relationships?
And no Dis. Why the fuck wouldn't you put Dis in if you put in Galadriel, Legolas, Sauron, Saruman, Tauriel, etc. as well as made Radagast a bigger part too, why not also have the kick-ass dwarf woman? I want to see some kickass, pissed-off momma dwarf action! Come ooooon I was so stoked to have someone to look up to and have as a favorite character! Why add a elf female and cut out the dwarf female if you want to appeal to the female audience. Not all of us identify as a thin twig of a woman and would rather have a heavier, stronger woman to identify with. Tauriel is just some way to give Hollywood another fucking love triangle. Because that's totally new. OH WAIT, no, that's a very prevalent cinema sin. I can get why some girls want to be someone like Tauriel, but please, if I have to suffer through her, at least give the rest of the female audience also the females that are ACTUALLY IN THE BOOK.
HOWEVER: I loved the scenes with the dwarves and the humans otherwise. Even most of the Thranduil parts. They had lots of heart to them (well, except for the death scenes for some reason? I actually cried more for Legolas's mum than for the line of Dain) and the actors acted so well with their full potential. Especially Richard Armitage whose eyes portrayed so much, I was blown away. Also the ending was absolutely PERFECT.
I also have to admit, what happened at Dol Guldur was pretty damn AWESOME. Go Galadriel go<3
It's so frustrating to see so much good mixed with so much easily-avoidable bad. I want to chalk up to the imperfections of Hollywood/film when it comes to things such as leaning too heavily on women to add romance so that "women will go see the movie", adding extra tropes to something that could have stood without it (especially for how long the movie is), fleshing out non-main characters therefore sacrificing the fleshing out of main characters who sorely need it, giving nonmain characters more screentime than some of the main cast, etc. I thought Peter better than falling on old, proven-wrong techniques. That he had re-grasped the feeling of how to make an epic movie. But no, we must cater to the "wider audience", forsaking the plethora of Tolkien fans, despite how much Tolkien's works have shaped the whole of the sci-fi/fantasy genre as well as all who have been touched by the wonderful books.
In short, it was not as bad as the Rankin/Bass "The Hobbit" (or any other of their work), but it fell so very short from Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, it's regrettable.

Posted 11 years agoNot going to go into much detail, but there's been a family emergency so I'll be trying to get things settled here, quickly finish up the commission series I've been up to, then probably be gone for a while except on email/note once or twice a day contact since I'll be stuck in a place with little to no internet. Sorry if it's inconvenient, but it's something I absolutely HAVE to do to care for a close family member.

Califur itself was kinda meh, but there were some highlights when it came to some dealers, so that was good.
I was glad to also see lots of people I recognized there too. That was pretty awesome~
