Hobbit Birthday Stream This Saturday
General | Posted 8 years agoOkay, I little bit late notice but the last few days have been hectic and I didn't have the energy to write this up.
So my birthday is in a week, and I thought I'd do something a little different. Hobbit's (From Tolkien's mythology) celebrate by giving gifts on their birthday, not getting them, so I'm going to try and and do the same in a this Saturday whenever I have time. I know I'll be out of the house for part of the day, but I'm going to try and and stream as much as I can and will be on at least in the morning, and evening (at least 8 hours). Because the last time I did some random gift drawing on stream there was some drama, I'm writing this up to lay down some ground rules:
- I'm going to for the most part be picking people at random to be drawn. I will be choosing folks that have chatted with me, made comments on art, or otherwise interacted with me prior to the stream over complete strangers at times, but depending on how crowded it gets I'll probably get to some new folks as well. It's not that I'm going to just be picking close friends, but I don't want this to become a bunch of random folks screaming for free art, so I'll see what I get to.
- I will be drawing on of your actual characters, so no requests for something else if you get picked. Please have a reference picture or two available if I'm not already aware of what your character looks like; I won't be drawing from description alone.
- You will need to be present when I pull the name for the next sketch (though you won't need to be present for the whole sketch)
- The art will be clean (I don't do NSWF stuff) and will be a sketch. I'm hoping none of these pieces will take more than 30 minutes to draw and that I can get through a good number. I will be applying a modifier to the character at random. Here are the modifiers I have planned:
but with extra weight (fat)
but ill fitting (stuck)
but feeling a bit bloated (inflation)
but ready to rampage (giant)
but scaley (transformed to a dragon, or if already one, a different kind of dragon)
but feeling a little bottom heavy (pear shaped)
but feeling unnoticed (shrink)
but shiny (balloon transformation)
but feeling out of sorts (mid transformation)
but working out (muscle)
If you don't like the modifier you get, you can decline, and I will put your name back in the randomizer pool for another pull, but you won't get to choose one.
- As a standard measure, I will retain the rights to the art itself, and I will be posting the art in my gallery. I will provide a link to the full resolution version and have no issues with you posting the piece as well.
If things go well, I may even extend it into to Sunday (I'll post a journal in that case), but please be nice and civil about this, I don't want to regret doing this.

New Years Resolutions Update
General | Posted 8 years agoTL;DR: I'm looking for some nice critical feedback on where to improve in my art.
Looking at my new years resolutions I think I'm doing pretty good. First and foremost I told myself I would do 52 pieces of artwork this year, about one a week. Not counting scraps, I've submitted 61 pieces so far this year, 9 in the current month. Additionally, I said I would work on backgrounds and try drawing non traditional dragon/lizards dudes. On the other character front, I've done better that I thought with 24 pieces featuring or at least including a non-reptile character. Backgrounds are also an improvement in that they exist. I'm still inconsistent there with some pieces having a good well thought out background and some being a bit too sparse.
This post is not, however, about self congratulations. First off, I'm not happy with myself about the state of my own "Resolutions" comic. The plan was to release two pages a month with a little bit of a rest for a total of 20 pages planned. I currently have only 6 done. I've also started a lot of pieces and dropped them pretty late in the drawing process because I've taken on a lot of trades and other things and managed my time poorly. I'd like to get on these things back on track there so I'm going to have to work on organization a bit more.
Secondly while I do see improvement in my artwork from the previous year, I do not want to rest on my laurels and stagnate in quality. I'm looking for some frank, honest, and constructive feedback on my art, technique, and areas I should improve. I've seen less critical comments on my art lately and instead a lot of compliments, which is flattering, but I'd like the honest feedback so that I can constantly be improving. Don't worry I have thick skin, just please make it constructive criticism I can act upon.
Also, I still feel a bit awkward overall on FurAffinity. I'm pretty introverted so casual conversation is difficult. I'm pretty good at opening up when I stream for some reason, but the less direct communication here can be pretty difficult for me, so I apologize for being less communicative that I should be sometimes. Tips there would also be appreciated.

Streaming Model Sheet
General | Posted 8 years agoToday, I'm going to try and finish a character model sheet of a muscled Dodongo for
draco-rex that he will later turn into a 3D model. Come and laugh as I drive myself insane trying to figure out muscles in profile.

Streaming Bowser Day Art

Art Queue
General | Posted 8 years agoSo I took on a lot of projects in the last month or so and have build up a sizable queue of art that I want to do, or am obligated to do. My current list of art pieces to do sits at 62 items, which is too large of a list to think about, so I putting out a smaller list here, partially as something I can work off of, partially as a reminder to everyone that has contacted me that I have them on the list and that there is an order to it. I'm also putting in breaks to do my own art of choice to finish up some stuff that I started a while ago and also to prevent burn out. That said, I have a lot at this point to work on, so I think I'm closing trades for the rest of the year.
Here's whats on my plate:
1. A picture for Bowser day.
2.
draco-rex - A character reference requested for doing a 3D model
3.
Emolsifier - Art trade
4.
Behemeleon - Finish picture started in a previous stream
5.
Bismark - Art trade
6.
DV2FOX - Art trade
7. Actual reference sheets for BLK and Alan
8.
Jaandan - Art trade
9.
darcell1291 - Art trade
10.
bigdino - Art trade
11. Finish resolutions comic, dammit!
I'll update this as I get things done.

Streaming!
General | Posted 8 years agoEdit: And done
So I've been streaming for a bit, but I haven't actually posted anything to let people know I do this because I wasn't sure if people were interested. If you'd like to see what I'm working on, hope on in at:
https://picarto.tv/blk
Things I'll be trying to work on:
- Sketches for an elephant inflation sequence
- The last panel to a wolf dragon growth comic
- Finishing up a bunch of other macro related pictures I started.
- Randomly drawing things based on chat if something interesting pops up.
If you pop in, feel free to let me know if see something odd, or have any advise on the art, I'm always trying to improve. Subject matter not so much though. I have it pretty set what I'm working on today.
Also, whether or not you actually jump on the stream, let me know if you like getting this kind of information and if you prefer seeing streaming announcements as journal entries or as temporary submissions as I see people often do.

For Those Who Do Not Like Multistreams on Picarto.TV
General | Posted 8 years agoEdit: Fixed code. Now works on quadstreams.
Edit 2: Berylium has a better solution. Look in the comments.
So, about an hour ago, I heard of an incident where two of my friends were doing a multi-stream and one of the viewers was upset on having to view both streams. They complained that it made the stream they wanted to watch too small, and caused performance issues and that they would prefer if the other streamer just wasn't there. I wasn't there at the time, but from what I was told, people were blunt, there was unnecessary tension, and all in all everyone was butt hurt by the whole incident.
So instead of being angry, I have a nice simple solution. I wrote a small bookmarklet that will strip out all but the first stream from a multi-stream session so that if you only want to watch one stream, you only need to. To use, create a new bookmark and copy the code below into the URL field of the bookmark. Then when you want to strip off the other streams, just click the bookmark:
javascript:(function(){var p=document.getElementsByClassName("flexPlayerOuter");var c=document.querySelectorAll(".flexPlayerInner");for(var i=1;i<p.length;i++){p[i].parentNode.removeChild(p[i]);}var s=c[0];s.classList.remove("flexPlayerInner");s.classList.add("flexPlayerInnerFull");for(var i=1;i<c.length;i++){c[i].parentNode.removeChild(c[i]);}})();
Let me know if this helps you or if you have any issues.

To Those Who've Favorited and Watched Me
General | Posted 8 years agoJust thought I'd say I really appreciate that you like my art! I'm not a very talkative person, and kinda seized up when thinking about what to write for so many notes to thank people, to the point where it's a bit overwhelming, so I'll say it here. I stopped doing art a while back for a long time, and it was encouragement from folks here that got me to open up enough to start posting artwork, and it has been your encouragement that has gotten me to stick with it longer then a lot of things I've gotten involved with in my life. I've gotten better with help here, and I hope to get even better and be able to share that art with all of you. Even though I haven't sent personal shouts or all that, I'm very thankful in my own awkward way. I hope you all have a good night or good day depending on when you read this.
Late New Years Resolution
General | Posted 9 years agoHappy New Year about a month ago. Been super busy at work and also doing home renovations so my desktop was packed away for a bit, but yeah, I have an an office and a desk now. So with a proper place to art and all, I've got a a few goals for the year. First off, I'd like to average a submission a week this year. I'm a little behind, but I have a bunch of pages of a comic pending submission once I get a little further along.
In addition to quantity, I'd also like to improve my are quality, so I've got a few things I'd like to improve on:
- Work on backgrounds
- Try drawing characters other than dragony lizard dudes
- Learn Blender and try to do some modelling
- Maybe try some animation
I probably don't have enough time to dedicate to all four this year, so I'm curious what you folks would recommend I work on this year.

A Humorous Observation
General | Posted 9 years agoI've thus far have gotten 57 comments from a myriad of friendly folks, and everytime I get one I have clicked their user name rather than the name of the artwork when I want to read the comment. I'm not sure if there is some UX anti-pattern going on here or if I'm just bad at adapting, but at least I've found this foolish consistency amusing.

General | Posted 9 years agoHey I just noticed I've gotten 100 favorites on my art. Thank you all and I'm glad you like it. I'm kinda happy I've finally decided to put this stuff out for others to see.
