To Rainfurrest Tomorrow!
General | Posted 13 years agoCome tomorrow afternoon, I'll be on a flight westward bound for RainFurrest in Seattle!
Most of the day-time, you'll be able to find me in the Dealer's Room at my table, along side Sofawolf Press from Friday through Sunday. I've got all the usual stuff: prints in all shapes, sizes and price ranges from $5 up, Scratches CDs, original sketches for sale, a smattering of marker/mixed media ready-to-wear badges [see 'em here]--and Nordguard patches!
Sofawolf Press will have copies of Across Thin Ice, and previews for the second Nordguard book, Under Dark Skies!
I love Washington state and Seattle, and I'm looking forward to going back! It's been all of... a month since my last visit, and I miss it!
Safe travels if you're going to the convention, and a great weekend if you're staying home!

Commissions; Charity Ladder Auction
General | Posted 13 years agoPeople ask every now and then about commissions, or prices, and I figured I'd make a quick note about it!
I don't actually do commissions! The reason for this is largely due to a lack of spare time. My days are spent mainly on comics, artwork for various projects or publications, or just illustrations I feel like painting for myself or close friends. I haven't openly taken commissions in over four years, aside from the occasional sketch commission at smaller conventions.
Not that I mind folks asking at all! I figured a blanket statement might spare some people a little time when looking for an artist. :]
However, on that note, I am offering a single character sketch as part of a charity ladder auction to benefit a local shelter, Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue!
100% of proceeds benefit the charity!
Auction ends on Sept. 30th!
My sketch offer is just a drop in the pond compared to all the wonderful and awesome stuff in the auction. Here's just a few of the listings: Fursuit partial from Jillcostumes, a full color piece from Tani DaReal, badges from various artists like Mary Mouse, Henrieke, and Idess, surprise pottery by Dingbat... really, this is just a couple of the things the winner receives!
Check out the auction for the full listing, and more information on the Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue!

Rocky Mountain FurCon, Tomorrow!
General | Posted 13 years agoAs one might guess from the journal title--I shall be at Rocky Mountain FurCon this weekend! You can find me in the Dealer's Room most hours of the day, right next to Sofawolf Press!
I will have the usual assortment of stuff--prints of all shapes and sizes, ranging from $5 upwards, Scratches CDs, originals for sale, including another small batch of ready-to-wear badges (check some out, here!)
Sofawolf Press will be stocked with Nordguard: Across Thin Ice, and free previews of the next Nordguard book, Under Dark Skies! Not to mention all their usual fare, including the Nordguard Card Game, Dog's Days of Summer, and the latest HEAT issue (which I have several illustrations in!)
And, just to note--Though this is one of the few conventions where, in the past, I've taken a sketch commission or two--I won't be doing any commissions at the convention this time around! After dealer's hours, there's a buncha beers with my name on 'em this year. :]
So that's it! Short and sweet, and hope to see you there!
Cheers,
-Blotch

Home Again, Work Again
General | Posted 13 years agoIt’s been a hectic last few weeks, between holidays, road-tripping to ComicCon International, the convention itself, and coming back home to a couple of deadlines. Things have started to settle down a fair amount, as bits and pieces get done and everything falls back into routines.
In brief:
ComicCon International was amazing, and overwhelming, as always. 150,000 attendees and five days of a convention can have that effect. It was a wonderful week of nerdy shenanigans with friends, buying awesome art, good food, and (of course) late nights drinking all over the town.
Nordguard received a lot of positive feedback again this year, both from new folks who’d never seen the book, and from people who picked it up last year and came by to pick up the free preview of the second book, Under Dark Skies. Competition in the Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer was stiff, as expected, and while Teagan didn’t win, the honor is in the nomination. Seeing Across Thin Ice up on the Eisner’s screen during the ceremony was pretty damn awesome. :]
It’s good to be home, however. It’s exciting to see what other people are doing with comics and storytelling, and it only fuels my own wants to make really awesome comics. So, aside from a few projects on the side, that’s what I’ll be trying to do for the next few months.
On the horizon is Rocky Mountain FurCon in August, and then RainFurrest in September, which will be our last two American conventions for the year. In December, we’ll be in Melbourne, Australia, for MidFur!
Speaking of MidFur, I plan on LiveStreaming painting the two badges for Sponsors and Regular Attendees for the convention this Friday evening, around 8PM MST or so. Feel free to follow @screwbald on Twitter to know exactly when the LiveStream will start (and for that matter, all my LiveStreams.)

ComicCon, Sofawolf Press & Free Stuff!
General | Posted 13 years agoComicCon International in San Diego begins in just a couple of days!
We're always excited for CCI, especially this year. In cased you missed it, Teagan Gavet, the author/layout/penciling half, has been nominated for the Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer for her work on Nordguard: Across Thin Ice. The nomination in itself is a huge honor, and competition is steep, but we'll be keeping our fingers crossed this Friday at the Eisner Award ceremony when the winner of the Manning award will be announced.
Where We'll Be:
Every day of the convention, you'll be able to find us sporadically at the Sofawolf Press booth #1236 (which is in the Webcomics section of the dealer's room.) Sofawolf Press will have Across Thin Ice, free 8-page previews of the second Nordguard book (Under Dark Skies), the Nordguard Card Game, copies of Dog's Days of Summer, Art of Kenket books, plus all of their new summer releases and the bulk of their full catalog! Come check it out!
We are more than happy to sign any of our books, so feel free to watch @screwbald on Twitter to know when we'll be at the Sofawolf Press booth! You can also follow @sofawolfpress on Twitter to find out when other Sofawolf creative will be on hand to sign books, such as Kyell Gold, Lynn Hogan (author/artist of Prydwen), Mandi Tremblay (author/artist of Peachy Keen,) and Kamui, the cover artist for many of Sofawolf's publications.
Free Stuff:
Aside from the free 8-page preview of the next Nordguard book, Under Dark Skies, Sofawolf will be giving out different buttons on different days of the convention, featuring either Pi, London, Nickel from Nordguard, or Diego and Bayshore from Dog's Days! Supplies will be limited, so stop by or follow @sofawolfpress for the heads up on free stuff!
There's also going to be a free preview of Spain Fischer's upcoming comic, Caterwall!
Also, when we're at the Sofawolf table to sign, we will be giving out a special, collector card for the Nordguard Card Game, the "White Bear!" event card! This card is not included in the original decks, and this will be it's first release! If you are unable to get one from us at CCI, we'll have some with us at other conventions throughout this year and the next!
So, once again, feel free to follow us @screwbald on Twitter to know when we're signing/giving out stuff!
Have a great week!
Cheers,
-Blotch

Nominated for the Russ Manning Award!!
General | Posted 13 years agoNow that it's up on the ComicCon International Website, I can make the announcement! I'm one of the five nominees for the 2012 Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award, for Nordguard: Across Thin Ice!
Here's some more information!
It's really exciting, I can't even. Wow. I get a grin ear to ear whenever I think about it! 25 top comic creators, film producers and other industry folk judge the awards, and will see and read our book. Just that alone is awesome. Being nominated and recognized for the story telling and layout of the book is a real honor to me.
The awards are given at the Eisner Awards ceremony in July at ComicCon International in San Diego... so, wish me luck!
With that bit of awesome news, it's back to the comic-mines, and more work on Nordguard book two, Under Dark Skies!

ANTHROCON, SEE YOU THERE!
General | Posted 13 years agoAnthroCon in two days! I can’t believe how quickly the last few weeks have gone by!
I'll be there, just like the last five or so years! Most of the time, you’ll be able to find me in the Dealer’s Room at my table, with a variety of stuff in tow: sketches for sale, some ready-to-wear badges (check 'em out, here,) prints starting at $5, Scratches CDs, Nordguard patches and stickers, plus some of the original artwork for the Nordguard Card Game will be available for direct buy, all at my table. Also, I made a numbered run of 11x14 prints of Dragonborn (here’s a photo)--I’m not bringing very many of the total 200 with me to AnthroCon, so if you’re interested in one (all low numbers,) stop on by!
My table is located on the outside row, across the aisle from the Sofawolf Press island of tables (here’s a map! Yar!) Sofawolf Press will have copies of Across Thin Ice, the Nordguard Card Game, and the free 8-page preview of the second Nordguard book, Under Dark Skies! Don’t forget to check out HEAT Vol. 9, too, and all the new summer releases from Sofawolf!
I have a smattering of originals for sale in the art show this year, a few big pieces, and lots of little things. In the general show: Ursa Major, Salmon Run, Stray, I Lick You, Truce, Sex Panther, and a couple of the Nordguard Card Game originals—Ambush, Shortcut, and Friendly Natives, among other stuff! Here’s a photo of the art that’s going!
In the adult art show: Crimson Divine, The British Are Coming!, Sweet Spring, and Minotaur’s Lair, to name a few. (There’s even another illustration for HEAT Vol. 9 with boobs and all that awesome lady stuff!) Here’s a photo of some of the adult show.
Safe travels if you’re headed to Pittsburgh! Good times if you’re staying put!
Cheers,
-Blotch

Under Dark Skies, & You Are Awesome
General | Posted 13 years agoUNDER DARK SKIES
We’re happy to officially announce the next Nordguard book—UNDER DARK SKIES!
The book will pick up right where Across Thin Ice left off, and if everything goes to plan, will be out in 2013. According to the current rough layouts, it will be a little bit longer than Across Thin Ice, and in the neighborhood of 80-85 pages.
There are a couple new pages from Under Dark Skies posted on the Nordguard website, and the development blog.
You’ll be able to pick up a free 8 page preview of Under Dark Skies at AnthroCon in June, and of course ComicCon in San Diego, as well as all the other conventions that Sofawolf Press attends!
| www.nordguard.com | @nordguard on Twitter | Blogspot |
And that brings us to…
Thank you, you guys are awesome!
It’s been really great to hear from people who’ve walked to comic book shops in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Melbourne—even Cape Town—to find Across Thin Ice on the shelves!
A huge part of that is because people have asked their local stores to carry it. Creator-owned comics are underdogs in the comic market, and it’s really difficult to make even the slightest impact. You guys have really helped however, by taking the initiative to ask for the comic, talking about it, and getting stores to keep copies on their shelves. So, thank you all so much for the support, for helping spreading the word, and your continued effort to! Every book that sells helps us to keep making more comics, and more artwork.
It’s been a pretty good first year for the Nordguard. That is to say, we can afford to eat, buy beer, and pick up enough paint and paper to launch right into work on the next book! So far this year, we have been pretty busy working on Under Dark Skies, and the summer promises the same.
Telling stories on paper with pen and paint is not just something we love to do; it’s really something we have to do. Art is such a huge part of our lives, there would almost be no life without it. Being able to work at something we love every day, and challenge ourselves with it, and create things which people enjoy is… honestly, really amazing.
Thank you guys so much for enjoying the work we put out, your kind comments, and your support. You rock, you really do. :]
Now, it’s time to get back to the paint-and-paper mines!

Nordguard Card Game/ATI Hardcover Pre-Orders!
General | Posted 13 years agoSofawolf Press will be starting pre-orders for many of their summer releases this Saturday (May 26th), starting at 10AM Central time. Included, will be a very limited pre-order for the Nordguard Card Game, and the return of Across Thin Ice hardcovers!
NORDGUARD CARD GAME
[Here's some information on the Nordguard Card Game, in case you missed it!]
The Nordguard Card Game is being released in two editions: Standard ($14.95) and Deluxe ($24.95). Both editions contain the full 130 card deck, which features a ton of new artwork created for the game, and 4 custom six-sided dice etched with the Nordguard logo. The Deluxe edition adds 4 extra dice (for faster game play,) a metallic Nordguard collector's coin, in a black canvas belt-pouch screen-printed with the Nordguard logo, signed and numbered by everyone who worked on the game!
Click Here for Standard Edition Pre-Order, and Here for the Deluxe!
While the standard sets will probably be around and readily available for a while, there will be an extremely limited number of Deluxe editions. Once the Deluxe editions are gone, that is it! If you want to get your hand on one, you have the following opportunities:
#1 - Sofawolf Press will be put 1/4 of the Deluxe edition (approximately 50) up for pre-orders on Saturday, May 26th at 10AM Central Time (the Chicago time-zone.) Once they are sold out, there will be no more deluxe editions available online until after AnthroCon (see #3 below.)
#2 - Sofawolf will have 1/4 of the deluxe decks (again, about 50) for sale at AnthroCon in Pittsburgh, PA the weekend of June 15-17. As in the past, they will split these roughly into three equal groups to be released each day of the convention, when the Dealer's Room opens in the morning. (So, if you miss out one morning, you can try again the next.)
#3 - Sofawolf will have another batch available online shortly after AnthroCon. They will release these on Saturday June 23rd at 10PM Central Time. Once this batch of Deluxe sets sells out, they will not have any more available online.
#4 - Lastly, the remaining few decks will be available in very limited numbers at conventions through the year, for as long as they last. (Sofawolf will definitely have some for sale at ComicCon International in San Diego, however!)
ACROSS THIN ICE: HARDCOVERS
Secondly, something I know a few people have been eagerly waiting for--Sofawolf Press has ordered a second printing of the Nordguard: Across Thin Ice hard cover books! They sold out really fast last time around, so if you missed out last year, now's your chance!
Click Here for Across Thin Ice Hardcover Pre-Order!
Once again, pre-orders will begin this Saturday (May 26th) at 10AM Central! Check out the Sofawolf Press news site for the full pre-order announcement, and to see all the new summer titles available for pre-order, such as Heat #9, Flight of the Godkin Griffin, and The Blood Jaguar!
With that said, I'm back to my short, Internet-less vacation on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere!

Prydwen Fanart Contest!
General | Posted 13 years agoIn case you missed it, there's a fanart contest going on right now to honor the release of the Prydwen graphic novel! To enter, all you need to do is draw one of the extensive cast of characters, in whichever visual you prefer, and put "prydwencontest" in the keywords. The prizes are awesome, including Intuos 5 tablets, Sofawolf gift certificates, and free advertising on FA.
I had the pleasure to meet the author and artist,
ladyfoxglove, at Emerald City ComicCon earlier this year at the Sofawolf booth. I bought a copy of Prydwen there, read it on the way home, and now can't wait for the next book. I had my own plans to paint some fanart of Tristan from the comic, when Lynn asked if I'd like to be one of the judges of the fan art competition. Needless to say, I was flattered! :]
So, while my own piece of Prydwen fanart will have to wait until the competition is over--now's your chance to draw some of your own, AND win fabulous prizes!
Here's more information on the contest, characters, rules, and prizes!
If you're not familiar with the comic, you can check it out online, here. The full-color, super-snazzy version of the comic is also available from Sofawolf Press, in both hard and soft cover editions. The print copies are actually on sale at the moment, in honor of the competition!
Cheers!

:]So, while my own piece of Prydwen fanart will have to wait until the competition is over--now's your chance to draw some of your own, AND win fabulous prizes!
Here's more information on the contest, characters, rules, and prizes!

Spring Cleaning/Art For Sale!
General | Posted 13 years agoI have a few paintings sitting around in storage boxes, not doing too much besides taking up space. I suspect it’s time to let them go in the name of Spring Cleaning!
“FA United” – Woah, blast from the past. This piece is from 2007, and was the cover for FurAffinity’s very first convention. The page is 18x12” (the actual painted image is 17x11 on the page.) It’s painted in watercolour and acrylic on Arches 140lbs hot press watercolour paper, signed and stamped on the back. You can see some photos of the original on the auction!
Fun facts: Jack from Dog’s Days of Summer is hidden in the crowd, it features over 40 characters, and is an Ursa Major winner from 2007!
>>Check out the auction for “FA United” on eBay, here!
===
“Lemmikki Paws” – This is a piece I painted last year. It’s acrylic on wood, 13x9” in size, and signed on the back. Check out the photos of the original on the auction, below! (If you need more cute husky art in your life, this is the piece for you!)
>>Check out the auction for “Lemikki Paws” on eBay, here!
===
Lastly, a friend is re-selling "River's Tryst," and older (tame, but NSFW) picture of mine from a few years ago! Check out the auction! Bid if you love labs and cougars!
Thanks for looking, and thanks again for bidding if you wish to! :]

The voting procedure is simple, and you have until May 4th to cast your ballot!
I’m happy to say that Nordguard: Across Thin Ice has been nominated in the “Best Other Literary Work” category.
In the “Best Published Illustration” category, I actually have two pieces nominated-- both the cover for Across Thin Ice, and Isolation Play!

Nordguard: The Card Game
General | Posted 13 years agoOver the last couple of weeks, we’ve been working on original artwork for the upcoming Nordguard Card Game.
Click Here For More Information, Sample Cards, and the FAQ!
The game itself has been developed by
tempo321 and
darkdragon452, and Jeremia Heupel of ThinkTank Games directed play-testing. They’ve been tweaking and play-testing for over a year now. It’s slated to be released this summer, and will be available from Sofawolf Press.
The card game will feature 50+ pieces of new original artwork we’ve done, plus some artwork from Across Thin Ice, and Nordguard concept art. In total, each deck has 130 cards, plus comes with custom Nordguard dice. The game will come in two editions, standard ($12) and collectors ($25).
There will also be additional artwork from the talented
Chromamancer!
You can find more information about the game itself, and see sample cards, on cardgame.nordguard.com! The site will continue to be updated as we get closer to the summer and the game’s release.
A lot of the painting for the cards was done on LiveStream. I edited/sped-up a couple saved sessions for anyone interested in the process! You can find more on my LiveStream Channel, but here’s a link to one.
I’ll be LiveStreaming pretty regularly over the next couple of weeks as I work on the preview for the second Nordguard book (the title of which will be announced soon!)
You can follow @screwbald or @nordguard on Twitter to be updated whenever I start LiveStreaming!

On LiveStream
General | Posted 13 years agoI've been painting on LiveStream a lot over the past few weeks, all be it a little sporadically. I've compiled a short LiveStream page, with fun things like the LiveStream F.A.Q, and links to saved sessions, etc! Check it out at:

If you want to catch a live session, there are a couple of places you can keep an eye out:
Follow @screwbald on Twitter to be notified every time I'm painting on LiveStream, for all projects, or...
Follow @nordguard on Twitter for less frequent notifications, pertaining only to comic stuff.
You can also follow on FaceBook for updates!

"Blotch" Is STILL In No Way Associated With...
General | Posted 13 years agoHopefully this will be informative where it needs to be, and mildly amusing for folks who are savvy enough to recognize Nigerian Princes, pop-ups advertising eternal youth, and take any anonymous person claiming to be the reincarnation of Herbert Hoover with a grain of salt.
We've mentioned this guy before--here's a link to that journal in case you missed it. In short, he likes to tell people, in person, that he IS Blotch.
His newest line is that he's the "third" member of Blotch. (The most inane part about it is he claims to draw all of the adult stuff, and just that. So, if you happen to run into him at Frolic in San Francisco, feel free ask him to accurately predict the next adult piece we plan on uploading. That should be pretty good for a giggle.)
For the record, "Blotch" has always been a collaboration comprised of two people, Tess Garman and Teagan Gavet. Teagan sketches/writes everything, and Tess inks/paints everything. Since day one, this information has always been available on our personal website, www.screwbald.com, and subsequently on every other website we run, such as www.dogsdaysofsummer.com, or www.nordguard.com. Everything we've published has also been credited to Tess Garman (a.k.a. Kenket) and Teagan Gavet.
Why a separate account? That's completely beside the point of this post, but we get asked all the time, so here you go: we still both create personal and separate art from time to time, and have personal accounts in which we watch/fave things, or communicate with people independently. This Blotch account was always meant to be about posting art, and just that.
Back to the imposter. We have never had anything to do with a guy named "Christopher Curtis."
We have never worked with anyone of that name, never met this person, nor spoken to him.
We are in no way associated with him. If you'd like to let him couch-surf out of the kindness of your heart, that's great-- but know he has nothing to do with Blotch, or our art, and he's not going to reciprocate by including you in the mythical "Dogs Days sequel" or make you a free fursuit.
For that matter, we've also never attended Frolic or any of the California Bay area furmeets, other than FurtherConfusion. We own the Diego fursuit, which Kenket built, and Teagan photographed. Kenket is the only one who has worn it, with the single exception of a good friend who wore the suit to Foxtrot in Denver, 2011.
You can find a complete list of places we are active online right here in our Profile ID. If it's not listed, that isn't us. There is only one email we will ever use, screwbald[at]gmail.com.
You can also meet us both in person at many major furry and comic conventions. Here's a list of places we'll be in 2012.
This is just a friendly announcement to spread the word, since it appears a few people have actually been hurt by this guy and his lies.
Stay savvy, my Internet friends. Always use protection and don't click on the pop-up ads.
Cheers,
Blotch

FWA and Atlanta Bound!
General | Posted 14 years agoThis afternoon I will be boarding a plane bound for Furry Weekend Atlanta!
During the day, you'll be able to find me at my table in the dealer's room, by Kyell Gold and Rukis!
I will have Nordguard patches and stickers, prints of all shapes, sizes and prices, Scratches CDs, plus a few original sketches for sale at the table. (I will also have a some sketches and marker pieces that are curiously badge-sized, which have found themselves tucked into sleeves, ready to wear! Here's a photo of some of 'em!)
There will be copies of Nordguard: Across Thin Ice for sale, and Dog's Days of Summer!
I don't have anything in the FWA art show this year. However, the tiger I painted, "Persevere," will be in the charity auction! All proceeds from it's sale will benefit the animals at CCI! (Here's a photo of the painting!)
In other news, this Friday at FWA is the debut of Kyell Gold's newest novel, Green Fairy! (Here's an excerpt!)
Not to mention, it will also be the first print appearance of Rukis and AlectorFencer's graphic novel Red Lantern! Since both Rukis and Kyell will be in attendance as Guests of Honor, they would be really happy to sign everything, I am sure. ;]
(And don't fret--if you won't be at FWA, you can order Green Fairy, Red Lantern, Across Thin Ice and a ton of more stuff from Sofawolf Press' website! Fill all of your bookshelves with talking animals!)
That scamp Donryu will also have some digital (CD) copies of his new and saucy comic, "Morning Wood," for sale!
See you there!
Cheers,
-Blotch

Home From Texas
General | Posted 14 years agoI am home again from Texas, by way of a wrong turn in Albuquerque! I had a blast at Furry Fiesta, and I will definitely be back again next year. The company was no less than fine, what with Kyell Gold lurking behind our table for the convention, and being neighbors with the fine gentlemen of FurPlanet. It was great to meet a whole new bunch of people, see some old faces I haven't seen in ages, and share a few moments with folks who I seem to run into everywhere.
I took the advantage of Leap Day to prolong the return to Real Life (also known as March.) As of last night, however, I am home, settling back in.
I have cracked my knuckles, procrastinated by cleaning, unpacking, and writing this journal, and have now made all the right assortments of coffee. It's time to get back to art...right after I catch up on email, errands, and lunch. I have a short stack of nearly-finished, or almost-finished paintings I plan on working through, while also continuing to sketch and layout the second Nordguard Book.
(If you're interested in watching paint dry, you can keep an eye on my @screwbald Twitter account for when I start to LiveStream painting again, either random illustrations or Nordguard related things.)
Upcoming:
I will be at Furry Weekend Atlanta in a couple of weeks in the Dealer's Room! I'll be near by both Kyell Gold and Rukis, and man, will they have some awesome new stuff for you to check out--Green Fairy by Kyell Gold and illustrated by Rukis, and it will also be the release of Rukis and AlectorFencer's beautiful comic, Red Lantern!
I am also planning on being at Emerald City ComicCon in Seattle later this month, but just as a table-lurker/assistant for Sofawolf Press' table! But I will be happy to sign stuff, and try to sell you things! ;]
(Prydwen, a full color comic by Lynn Hogan and published by Sofawolf Press, will be making it's debut there! Check it out!)
And down the line this summer is AnthroCon, ComicCon San Diego and Rocky Mountain FurCon, but with the way time flies, we'll get to those soon enough...

This Weekend: Texas Furry Fiesta!
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm bound for Texas Furry Fiesta this weekend and it'll be my first time in the Thunderdome! I've only ever heard great things about the convention, so I'm excited!
On the way, there will be a bit of camping and storm chasing, but I should be there bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Friday morning in the Dealer's Room!
I'll be at my Dealer's Table the majority of the convention, with the usual stuff: prints of all shapes and sizes from $5 upwards, original sketches for sale*, Nordguard patches, and Scratches CDs. FurPlanet, who among their own fine products will be distributing some for Sofawolf Press, will be next table down with copies of Nordguard: Across Thin Ice! :]
Kyell Gold will also be hanging around, making elusive appearances, signing books, saying witty fox things, wearing cool hats, and (if you ask him nicely,) taking $1 micro-fiction badge commissions!
*I may also be taking sketchbook commissions at the convention, largely depending on what drinking and dinner plans arise. (I hear there's a beer--or seven--with my name on them.)
Have a great weekend, no matter where you end up spending it!
Cheers,
-Blotch

Worldcon Members, Nominate Nordguard for a Hugo!
General | Posted 14 years agoIt's Awards Nomination Season, including the Hugo Awards!
Nordguard: Across Thin Ice is eligible to be nominated this year for the Hugo's "Best Graphic Story" category!
This is really pretty awesome. The category is a relatively new addition to the Hugo Awards, and as such, the "underdogs" have more of a chance of getting noticed and included.
So what does that mean? It means I need you fine Worldcon members to nominate Across Thin Ice!
To nominate, you must either currently be, or have been, a member of either a 2011, 2012 or 2013 Worldcon. (If you are not a Worldcon member and want to become one, you may join Chicon 7 or LonStarCon 3, the 2013 Worldcon, before January 31st 2012 to be eligible.)
The deadline for nominations is March 11th, 2012!
The Hugo nominations are being handled though the Chicon Hugo Nomination Website. You can submit a ballot either online (click here!), or mail-in a paper ballot (more info!).
If you happen to be a Worldcon member and you haven't yet cast your nominations, we would greatly appreciate the moment of your time to include Nordguard: Across Thin Ice on your ballot!
The pertinent information you'd need would be:
Catagory: Best Graphic Story
Title: Nordguard: Across Thin Ice
By: Teagan Gavet/Tess Garman
(For "Magazine," I'd say: Publisher, Sofawolf Press, ISNB 978-1-936689-10-1, #
You can put up to five names down for each category on the Nominations Ballot, so you can give all your favorites from 2011 a shot at being nominated this year!
Thank you very much!
It's been a whirlwind kind of year so far. Really, thank you everyone who's gotten a copy of Across Thin Ice, left kind comments, shared the book with friends, penned great reviews, sent nice emails, or simply just said at conventions "I can't wait until the next book!"
Being able to write and make comics is truly a dream realized for both of us. It's exciting, and encouraging at how well the book has been received, both within and outside of the fandom. Thank all of you guys for that! :]
Now, back to sketching the next Nordguard book I go...
Cheers,

FurtherConfusion Wrap-Up
General | Posted 14 years agoFurtherConfusion 2012 was pretty amazing this year! Thank you to everyone who came by the table to say hi or to pick up some prints, or placed a bid in the art show! Also a big thanks to everyone who grabbed a copy of Nordguard: Across Thin Ice! :]
I really like the new venue, especially the added space the convention center provides. The staff of the Marriott and the FC convention staff were all friendly and helpful, and thank you to everyone who volunteered their time toward FurCon! I'm looking forward to returning next year!
I've been waiting for the last few months for it's release, so I was happy to pick up a copy of Mitti's new comic Peachy Keen, which I highly recommend! The artwork is really charming, as is the story. In a nutshell, it's a YA (Young Adult) coming-out story of two girls set in 1955, but you can find more information (and a few pages,) up here!
Help Save Hyenas
A friend of ours, who works with at a Berkley facility researching hyenas, informed us that they had their funding cut a few weeks ago. As such, they will begin euthanizing animals when the last of the funds have dried up. Our friend and a few other people are currently racing against the clock to move the remaining twenty animals to zoos or sanctuaries (three will be going to the Oakland zoo later this week.) They are taking donations to keep the hyenas fed until all of them can find homes. You can find more information at hyenasanctuary.tumblr.com, or follow @HyenaSanctuary on Twitter, to stay tuned as things develop or see what you can do to help!

I'm a little loath to leave the nice California weather and return to the bitter Coloradan cold, so I'll probably pick my way back slowly over the next few days. When I do finally get back, full-time work on the second Nordguard book will recommence. I suspect I'll be up and LiveStreaming as I paint pages in Feburary, so if you're interested, keep an eye on my Twitter accounts, @screwbald and @nordguard for LiveStream updates!
The next year should be pretty exciting, as there's a couple other projects in the works. Most notably is the official Nordguard card game, developed by avid table-top gamer and friend, Tempo, and DarkDragon, and designed by Chromamancer. They've been play testing for a year, and it's been honed down to as near perfection as you can ask (and it's crazy fun!) We'll be doing some original artwork for the card game this spring, and if all things go as planned, the initial decks should be available at AnthroCon from Sofawolf Press! More information on that later this spring!
I hope everyone had as wonderful FurtherConfusion as we did, and a great start to the new year!
Cheers,
-Blotch

See You At FurtherConfusion This Weekend!
General | Posted 14 years agoFurtherConfusion is less than a week away, now!
As in previous years, I will be there, and in the day you can find me in the Dealer's Room!
(Specifically, I'll be in the back of the room next to Sofawolf Press!)
In the Dealer's Room, I'll have with me the usual fare: prints of all shapes and sizes (including some matted $5 ones I haven't done before,) original sketches for sale, Scratches CDs, a handful of Endangered Ark card decks, Nordguard Patches and indoor/outdoor stickers, and all that!
In the Artshow, I'll have some original paintings for sale, including: Dragonborn, Away on Business, Here's Looking At You, Salute, and Kanpai, among others--here's a photo! In the adult art show, I will have Circle of Life, Chain Reaction, Choose Your Own Adventure, and a fair amount of unposted pieces. Check out a photo here, if you like!
Sofawolf Press will have plenty of softcover copies of Nordguard:Across Thin Ice in tow, as well as the very last of the first printing/first edition hardcovers!
(If you've been wanting to get your paws on one, this might just be your last chance, so swing by the Sofawolf Press table early!)
Making Graphic Novels Panel, Friday 8PM
I will also be running a panel on Making Graphic Novels Friday night at 8pm in Room K (in the Convention Center.)
The aim of the panel will be to touch upon what significance comics have in the fandom, and how to approach putting your own ideas to paper. We'll be also talking a bit about our particular method for going from a written script to a finished page for Nordguard.
If you've got miles to cover, safe travels! And if you're already here, see you soon!
Cheers,
-Blotch

2011 Into 2012
General | Posted 14 years agoToday marks the end of all my FurtherConfusion convention prep and I can relax a bit. I had to get everything ready a bit ahead of schedule, as I’ll be spending the next couple weeks on the road. I’m headed south and west for another New Year’s Eve among the merry multitude, in the splendor and pageantry of Las Vegas. In the company of friends, family and showgirls, I look forward to what 2012 has to offer!
2011 was quite a year. It was full of “ups” and, well, not really “downs,” just a couple “near-catastrophes” that kept me on my toes.
One of the best things about this year was the release of Nordguard: Across Thin Ice.
It’s been very well received, inside and outside the fandom, and I’m over the moon about it. Once again, a big thank you goes out to everyone who’s bought a copy online (from Sofawolf Press or other places), or asked your local stores to stock it, or even just lent your copy to a friend to get the word out. Hearing about people able to walk into comic stores across the nation and find a copy already on the shelves--even in Canada and Europe--is really an incredible feeling. 2012 will be another “comic-making” year, with most of my time devoted to the second Nordguard book. I’m really looking forward to returning to it when I get home, since a lot of neat stuff happens in the second book. >:]
Anyhow, after a glitzy and certified Fabulous™ New Years, I plan on leaving the city lights behind for a little winter camping. When cabin fever (can you get that in a tent?) starts to set in, I’ll be darkening some friends’ doorsteps for a few days, on a mission to drink all of the beer and all of coffee with them.
And of course come mid-January, I’ll be in San Jose for FurtherConfusion!
(I’ll post more on that, what art I’ll have with me, prints, etc, closer to the actual date!)
In short, I hope 2012 starts out great for everybody, and then continues to treat you well!
Stay safe, and see you on the other side! :]
Cheers,
