General | Posted 14 years agoI didn't know Athus too well. I'd only met him once or twice at cons, but he'd never been anything but a shy sweetheart. Certainly, he didn't deserve this.
I always kinda felt like he was a world apart from everyone. Even when people shared an understanding of what he was about, it always seemed like his was a deeper love. I do genuinely hope that in release he got his wish.

eziel (AquaBunny) at AC. He's a sweet guy who's been dealt a crap hand from life: thanks to a pretty crazy accident as a kid he's faced perpetual health problems throughout his life. Crazy as it seems and skeptical as I am, having met the guy it appears to be true.
Long story short, yesterday an artery blew and his replacement heart kinda took a dive thanks to - what seems like - scar tissue from previous surgeries. His good friend
talshu has been taking care of matters, but fixing a fucked up heart situation ain't cheap. By a longshot.

But that said, at AC I received quite a bit of interest and plenty of folks suggested ending it the week of AC might've been a bit... premature.
As such, I've decided to extend the contest for two more weeks! So if you're interested in participating, I wish you luck!

I've got a spare laptop. It's a gateway CX200X convertible tablet-laptop. It's about 3 years old now, but it runs just fine. (Please see below for the tech specs on the lappy!)
Since it's spare, I'm aiming to ditch it. And since selling a 3-year-old laptop seems a bit silly, I've decided to ego-art-contest it to see what happens :).
I will include a Crumpler laptop bag ($100 value!) that I've used with the laptop.
THE RULES
By entering, you are agreeing to the following rules:
1.) THE CONTEST ENDS AT 12:01 AM, July 6th, 2009 (A MONTH FROM THE DATE OF THE POST)! This date may change depending on interest!
2.) ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POINTED OUT VIA EMAIL TO BROKENWINGX9 ON GMAIL TO COUNT. Preferably these would be sent to my FA notes as well, just in case!
3.) All entries must include my character (Brokenwing) as a central point of interest, but may include as many other characters as you like!
4.) Entries may be adult, clean or everything in between.
5.) Anyone may enter as many times as they'd like but the number of entries has no bearing on their chance of winning.
6.) There is only one prize, so ABSOLUTELY NO WHINING/COMPLAINING/BEMOANING/CRYING/LITIGATION if you don't win. Sorry, but that's how it is. If you did some amazing quality work that would typically sell for quite a bit, I thank you whole-heartedly but the winner is the winner. I'm obviously not able to reimburse all entrants for their entries and so no such reimbursement shall be afforded.
7.) The winner will be determined by the best single piece of art as judged by the criteria below. I will be posting the top 3 (maybe 5?) folks and their scores accordingly, but if you're curious about your individual score and any comments I made you may note me AFTER the contest has ended.
8.) The contest requires, at minimum, 20 separate individuals to enter. That means no matter how many art pieces received, if 20 separate people don't enter the contest, the contest will be called a draw and no winner shall be named. In such a case, again, no reimbursement will be made for the entries.
9.) The laptop will be shipped to any country I am able to ship it to. That is, if the US has an embargo on a particular country I will obviously be unable to send the laptop. In the case that the winner is in such a country, the laptop will fall to the second place individual and so fourth.
10.) I will pay shipping costs (so long as they do not exceed the value of the laptop), but the winner must incur any import tariffs. I don't know these up front and I would prefer not to care. With luck, this will not be an issue!
11.) I reserve the right to post ANY and ALL entries I chose to my FA account! That said, I will be polite about it, so if you'd prefer I not post one feel free to say as much!
THE JUDGING
The entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
1.) Uniqueness/Originality/Creativity - This should be self-explanatory. If you come up with something nobody else comes up with, it will earn you points.
2.) Overall Quality of Art - My judgment on the quality of the art itself.
3.) Effort - How good is the art relative to your typical art.
4.) Awesomeness - This is obviously a very subjective topic. Effectively it amounts to how enthralled I am by the piece of art. For adult pieces, this can mean how easily I spring a boner; for clean pieces this can mean how much I appreciate the art or the topic.
5.)Accuracy of the character - I have quite a bit of leeway in how I think broken should look, but see below for the must-not-miss elements of an appropriate entry!
Each of these is given a 1-10 grading scale (1 being low, 10 being high). The final grade is a summation of these values; the values themselves will include any additional weighting I feel is necessary.
THE CHARACTER
Brokenwing can be a bit tricky to get correct. These are the most important elements of his character in my view.
1.) Forescaled shaft: NOT a sheath! This hangs down off of her bellyscales very similar to how a human's uncut shaft looks, only scaled. Length is 18" hard, 14-16" soft. Includes a scaled ballsac.
2.) Blue fin things. Start at the head, run all the way down the back to the tail.
3.) Ear fins: Two pronged with a membrane between. Variations on this are allowed, though!
4.) Horns: Short and stubby.
5.) Tail: Short, stubby and curled upwards. The spade is thick and rounded, a bit like a penis. In point of fact, it CAN orgasm. The spade, however, sometimes does not appear and this is acceptable.
6.) Eyes: Blue to match the fin-things.
7.) Wings: Usually small and cute. Occasionally these have 2 wing-fingers, occasionally just one. Either is fine.

So here's one I did to prove the point:
1) What was your FIRST video game console?:
Atari Lynx. Yeah, console, blah blah blah. If you want to get technical, Sega CDX.
2) Name a few games you played on said console:
On the lynx, California Games, Viking Child, Toki, Roadblasters. On the CDX, ummm... jeez. Too much to name, so just Sonic CD for now.
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently:
Not counting computers built explicitly for the purpose, 9.
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?:
Wait, what? That's fucking specific. Ok, how about Ryu. Or Ken.
5) If you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with kickass character designs, I would like to hear a "hell yes" followed by a Capcom character you love.
... Who wrote this shit? Still, I definitely have the hots for felicia. Or the fish dude from darkstalkers nobody seems to show any love. Poor guy.
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?:
Um, yeah... wipe your hands off, dude.
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?:
Wait, why the fuck am I doing this again? Fuck you.
How about System Shock 2.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
Boy, that's a tossup. In terms of style and awesomeness, 2D. There's so much more artistic direction and neatness that can be portrayed using sprites than 3D will likely ever match. That said, it's tough to beat 3D for realism when you absolutely, positively need a murder simulator. I mean FPS.
9) Are you an SNK fan?
Oh sure. If shooter after shooter didn't interest me, at least they have their yearly installment of half-assed fighting game. I'll probably take some flak for that. Or at least I would, if anyone actually gave a fuck.
In all honesty, the Metal Slug series is basically fueled by awesome.
9) Are you good at DDR?:
Eh, I was A-Bing 8-9 feet in the days of DDRMAX, but seeing as everyone's using the fucking bar now I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
10) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?:
... Is this a cry for attention? Is that what I'm getting here? Everyone does. Of course they do. If you DON'T want to kick the dog's ass, there's something fucking wrong with you.
11) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
Hmmm, yes. Let's just say I wasn't an especially fun friend to have if you weren't playing video games. Downright shitty, even. I like to think that's been remedied.
12) Do you listen to video game music?
A little, not much. Usually just because I like the artist. Of course, I'm also pretty picky about music and think 90% of video game music is trash.
13) Have you ever coshplayed a VG character..?
Is that like where you're skunk drunk and you think draping a roll of TP over your soggy mug makes you look like sephiroth? Because no, I haven't.
14) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old Asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??:

Anyway, no such luck. Mostly because when I play arcade games there's already an asian kid there to own me.
15) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly:
Metroid (Prime was brilliant, but the sequels left me wanting), System Shock, Rocket Jockey (yeah, so who else has ever played this?)
16) Mario or Sonic?
Tough call. A good portion of my life was taken up by Sonic. But since then, Sega has very thoroughly raped and pillaged his corpse to the point of no recognition. At this time I'm forced (though not terribly unpleasantly) to side with Mario.
17) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use SpiderMan as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?:
Fuck no.
18) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.):
Hmmm. Hard to say. I don't play RPGs much, but that's not to say I don't like em. Sports games are similar, and some sports games are downright awesome (Virtua Tennis, for instance). I guess RPGs, if only because of their audience.
19) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love:

20) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?

22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
Oh john leguizamo. You poor, pathetic, latino bastard. Even you couldn't save this movie.
That said, still full of incredible amounts of awesome, but like The Wizard it's that 80s-retro-oh-god-what-have-we-done awesome.
23) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
Another capcom-related question, huh? What about the Mortal Kombat movie? The first video game movie to actually BE HALF DECENT was about a game whose main selling point was that you could RIP A MAN'S SPINE OUT.
Anyway, unlike the mario bros. movie, this was downright fucking awful. In basically every respect.
