Currently I'm in the middle of the end of school and my time is occupied with final projects and exams and the like, so my free time is all but non-existent.

BUT once school is over I will likely be doing a few requests for people who need pics for their PCA SECT (this thing here) characters. Nothing fancy, but enough to get the job done. Don't reply or anything yet, I'll post it up when I'm ready to do them, just a heads-up. Meanwhile, back to studying (by which I mean goofing off).

Well it's been over a month since I've done anything on here and I've been pretty invisible. I haven't died yet, but school has been a chore and the entire house is in the process of being remodeled, so my free/drawing time has been hampered to say the least. For a while my workspace was a vacant space with torn-up carpet and plastic hanging on the walls, so yeah. I'll try to get something productive done soon, and by productive of course I mean boobs.

I have an old CanoScan LIDE30 F915900 scanner that I used for years on my old computer. I have a new computer but have long ago lost any software that came with this thing, and can't find the drivers for it anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated if anyone has/knows where to get them. For Windows 7 btw, I found them for older versions of Windows.

Just for those who may have missed it or those who are being lazy, today's the last day to vote for your choice for new principal of the PCA, details found here. And while I'm not going to tell anyone who to vote for, I will simply say that Ben Parker was right - with great power there must also come great responsibility. And while this new principal position may be more subdued and less imposing than previously, it's still a role that requires input, ideas, creativity, and dedication. And personally, I voted for Mrs. Kindle and encourage others to do likewise, just to have someone solid to bounce ideas off of and get things moving in the right direction again. That is all.

And since the weather's turning nice finally, who wants to have a party? Cut day to be held at the Octazooka water park in Pallet Town, just a short road trip to the south! Eight spinning, twisting water slides designed for maximum soakage, a wave pool, even an indoor course for full-on water gun WAR, featuring the new Hydro-Pump 5000 Megablasters for use! (Rental, but eh, details.)

Don't worry about seeing your teachers there, they won't tell if you don't...

With the storm over current developments (you should probably be aware of them at this point) in the P.C.A. word has begun to circulate among the student population and many are now feeling embolden. Rumors have begun to circulate about a large student protest to be held on the quad.

In fact said protest is the focus of the next planned stage in the story, and like-minded volunteers are needed. I've asked this of some people privately, but if you have a character you would want in on such a protest to remove the current administration, drop a comment here as well as a link to any refs. I can make no guarantees as to which or how many I'll use or even if it works out, but I'll draw the crowd from the responses I get.

For those who may have missed it there's a journal at the PokeCombatAcademy main account here. The journal redirects to the PCA forum, found here. The subject of this journal is what to do with Principal Darius, specifically regarding his removal and replacement.

I've made my stance on this loud and clear and don't need to repeat it, feel free to sift through my last few journal entries if you like, nothing has changed. But for those who answered those journals and left comments and notes elsewhere, this is your chance to speak up. Whatever your opinion may be, head over to the topic in question and state it. If you're adamant about not signing up for the forums, drop a comment. This is a direct survey of the matter at hand, to be resolved as quickly as possible, and this is your chance to give your input. So, ciao for now.

So what's next for the PCA? It's no secret that things aren't what they were when this thing began. What used to be a wild, spontaneous, fun thing has been bogged down with problems, overall morale in the gutter. Exaggeration? Up to you, but there's no denying that things now are not what they have been and not what they could be. Can the PCA as we know it be salvaged? Yes, but not without work. So what can be done to restore the PCA to its "glory days"? Here are my opinions, take them for what you will.

No more endless legislation
This subject has more than anything been the chief point of the comments, notes, IMs, and other communication I've received lately. People are tired of being told what they can or can't do, people are tired of having their creativity stifled. The PCA, as has been stated before, is a communal art project, not a role-playing scenario. There is no such thing as "canon" beyond what each individual person is willing to accept. Guidelines? Sure. All worlds need some structure, but holding onto them with a stranglehold, immediately denouncing anything that deviates from them in the slightest? Absolutely not the way to go.

People are intelligent enough to judge for themselves what is or is not a good story, character, or idea. And the vast majority of people in the PCA are not strict purists who are merely trying to put text onto the rigid rules and structure of the games that it is based upon. People want freedom to explore the strange and unusual, the freedom to build upon an idea and world, not be bound by the pathetically restrictive rules of a video game. As has been stated in the past, there is absolutely no need for it. If someone comes up with something over the top and insane, it will be ignored by the community as a whole. If two or three people want to make that "their" canon, so be it. If someone comes up with a good idea that is embraced by the vast majority of the people involved but that bends or breaks one of the established rules, what's the problem? They obviously did something good or it wouldn't be popular. That's the whole idea behind a project like this. Everyone can bring and take away whatever they please. But forcing people to jump through hoops in order to conform to the ideas of a few is part of what got us in this mess to begin with.


Darius has got to go
Let's face facts. Darius was a bad idea that was poorly implemented. The focus of the PCA should be on the students and their stories. The rivalries should be between them, not between them and a god-like faculty. Every now and then, sure, the faculty gets to star in an episode of their own, but for the most part they should be background characters. Darius has from day one set out to focus the spotlight on him. He was supposed to be a temporary event to show up, make everyone miserable, and then get run out of town on a rail. But that didn't happen. Nor will it.

Left on his own, Darius will never do anything to warrant his removal because as I've stated, those who control him simply do not want him to leave. In this his purpose has been betrayed and abandoned, and therefore it is time for him to go. He has done nothing positive for the school or the project and is a huge source of diminished morale. Nobody wants him to hang around to tell the story of how awesome he is, people just want him gone, he has overstayed his welcome. An effective villain is one that you want to see the good guys beat, you want to see them gone "in-character". Not so here.

Darius needs to be removed before the PCA can return to the "glory days". There are several suitable candidates that can serve as a replacement, none of which will focus the attention on themselves and let it return to where it belongs - the students and their stories. It's time to admit to a mistake and let it die before it can do any more damage. No excuses, just do what has to be done for the good of the community. If dragging out a failed plot in order to keep the attention on him is more important than the good of the PCA as a whole, well, so be it I suppose.


No more meta-plots, only events
A meta-plot is something (like Darius) that affects the entirety of the school and setting, people cannot choose to ignore it and do their own thing. Events are things like an upcoming dance, spring break, or the big pokeball game. Events give people the option of going along with it or ignoring it to do their own thing. Nobody is forced to do anything or forced to deal with events, unlike meta-plots which force everyone to go along for the ride, like it or not.

This is related to the idea of "don't tell us what to do" but bears mention in its own category. Provide inspiration sure, but don't drag people around by a ring and force them to play along with something that they may have zero interest in and that will ultimately get them to go do something else.


More interaction
In the beginning there was a lot of interaction between the various members of the PCA. Back and forth stories, drawings, comics, and other ideas. Everyone responded to each other to create an ever-growing tale. Then at some point, this stopped. I suspect it is because of the above reasons, but we need a return to that. People need to just pick someone that interests them and do something. Maybe they'll respond, maybe they won't. People are busy, people often have many irons in the fire. But sooner or later something will click so keep at it.

Whenever two people interact in this way there should never be need for a third party to approve of it. I think that if the freedom to express themselves returns this sort of thing will return as well, but it needs to if the PCA is to return to what it was.


Stop the obsession with "real-time"
Some people are far more guilty of this than others. The PCA does not function in real time. It cannot. A story that takes up 10 minutes of "game time" to play out can take months of "real time" to write or illustrate. This sort of art project cannot be bound by time constraints. This means stop trying to apply temporal logic. Your students do not age a year every time the real-world calendar year rolls around. They've had three Christmases and are still a freshman? Yeah, welcome to the Simpsons fiction time. We do not exist in a linear timestream nor should we. We aren't trying to build a canon story, we're trying to tell a multitude of stories all existing in roughly the same time/space continuum. But maybe not entirely.

Point is, focus on telling your story or drawing your art, stop obsessing over the logic and chronology in these things. That isn't the point. Think in terms of chapters, not a cover to cover novel.


Other ideas? Opinions? Feel free to add to this list or come up with your own, this is how I see things having been here since day one and watched things unfold. I loved the PCA concept when it started and have watched it gradually crumble. My interest is in rebuilding it and restoring it to what it once was, but to do that it needs to be built on a strong foundation, not one based off of bad ideas and rash decisions.

Before this goes any further I'll drop a word of warning that this journal will piss people off, make enemies, and likely incite a lot of bad feelings and drama. I'm not the type of person to pick a fight, but I'm not the type of person who's going to stand still and let bullshit get thrown all over me without retaliation either. In this journal I will name names and I will quote quotes, and may appear hostile, but in light of that, read if you like, knowing that every word that follows is truth.

A recent journal posted at the Poke-Combat Academy by  melfice tried to detail the history of the PCA, the RP chats, the administration, and the decision-making. But the glaring amount of lies, omissions, and one-sided bullshit in it needs to be addressed. The journal has since been removed, but I'm sure many of you have seen it. For those who haven't, a transcript is available here, go read it first before you continue here.

In the beginning the PCA concept was created and encouraged by Ebony Leopard. KaeMantis, Kompy, and myself quickly came aboard, among many others whose omission in this list is not due to neglect but because there are simply too many to list, certainly no disrespect to the others who contributed in the early days is intended. Some are still with us, others have moved on to other things. Regardless, we were the "big four" of the PCA, contributing the bulk of the characters, ideas, concepts, and interaction. I think I can safely say that the long-running comic battle between EL and myself did more to accelerate the interest in the project than anything else at the time.

In the beginning there really were no guidelines as to characters, "pokemorphs in a high school setting" was about it. In the beginning there was very much a "comic book" feel to it, the original concept was, to summarize, "Pokemon meets Ninja High School meets Naruto". I created Team Jet to fill a void. Back then there were a lot of characters and teams that could be described as heroic or at least benign neutrals, but there were no actual "villains", which every story and every comic book needs. They were designed to be powerful, threatening, and menacing yet appropriate to the setting, and from the responses they've gotten since their creation, I think I succeeded well in that regard. They were never intended as role-play characters, as back then, there was no such thing envisioned. They were the bad guys, plain and simple. Since then they've grown and developed and become a lot more complex, but they'll always be my favorites.

Nicole, who gets referenced a lot as an offender to the rules, was meant to be a unique adversary, the "boss" villain. As such she had abilities beyond the normal (she knows moves not on a meowth's movelist and her resistances and weaknesses are off - though even then the anime, if considered canon, supports this) in order to make her a "boss" character - powerful and unique. It wasn't done as part of any power-gaming, it was done to give the PCA a strong, threatening, and hated villain who wa unpredictable, the sort that not everyone can beat, it would take someone truly special, a worthy "hero". Again, I think I succeeded. Even after the initial rules were clarified she was perfectly legal, the first set of rules allowed for hybrids - "We prefer that you use actual pokemon for your characters, but poke hybrids (like mixed parent pokemorphs) are ok too." and Nicole was basically a meowth-hitmonlee hybrid, only spiritual, not physical. Later this was changed and she was indeed grandfathered in. Her abilities were already established, her character was already central to this fact, and yes, bringing her "in line" would have made for a total scrapping of her character. So yes, she flagrantly breaks the rules. But nobody has ever told me she's a bad character. Just because something breaks a rule doesn't make it bad, and just because a character is 100% within them doesn't make them a good character. As for the argument that "if you allow one exception you have to allow them all", nonsense, but I'll get to that later.

Now fast-forward a few months. Ebony Leopard had always intended for Principal Felinduce to be "the" mewtwo, and unique, though admittedly never outright said such. In one of the first bureucratic moves by the PCA, an effort was made to clean up the legendaries and set rules as to how these supposedly unique beings were handled. It was decided that mewtwo was unique, but hold on...

Melfice had a mewtwo character of his own, a character ripped from one of the Persona videogames, that was the teacher for his character Riou. He talks very derisively in his journal about people being given exceptions lest their character be "made impossible to properly play", yet demanded he be given an exception for Elizabeth, his mewtwo, because she was too important and too established. Many alternative solutions were proposed but he refused to budge. After much argument EL gave in, there were now two mewtwos. Melfice had gotten his exception and been grandfathered in, yet he doesn't seem to mention this in his own journal.

And now that we've opened that can of worms, let's go digging around and see what we find. Point number two, from the above-mentioned journal - "I won’t even go into the number of characters who were basically overly talented, and some claiming to be even better than the teacher that taught them."

Last spring Melfice pulled, out of nowhere, an attack on the PCA by his character Riou's brother Issen, a shadow pokemon who fought in death matches, was undefeated, and can apparently defeat the entire school at once, faculty included, and break the planet in half and smash it on either side of Galactus' head if he comes to visit. Perhaps I exaggerate, but only a little bit. He might have to hit Galactus twice. The attack landed several students in the hospital and tore up the grounds near the campus. Plans were made to unify to defeat this menace, only to find out that he's unbeatable, nothing anyone does will matter, and that only Riou, thanks to his divine level aura powers, training from a god-like legendary, and the collection of unique artifacts she has in her shop, is able to defeat him. Everyone else is just along to watch him basically battle himself. Keep in mind this is the person who accuses others of god-modding and power-gaming.

This same character, Riou, a sophomore, who claims he only wants to live a humble life as an artist and who has only been training to fight for two years or so (don't quote me on this, I may be wrong on the specifics, but it's certainly not a life-long commitment), claims that he can defeat the best team in school single-handedly. This same character, in a role-played fight, took on a senior rhyperior who had been built as a monster heel and had seriously injured (to the hospital with broken bones) several previous opponents. After dodging or evading (by sheer skill of course) the vast majority of attacks against him he finally took a couple hits only to take a triple Swords Dance powered Fire Fang (lucarios are weak to that, right?) linked with a Thunder Fang and not go down, all it did was make him angry. The match was effectively called, and after taking ten minutes to laugh it off, he went for sushi. This is run by the same person who accuses others of god-modding and power-gaming.

This same person also pushed forward a plotline involving a serial rapist on campus and now cites both this incident and the attack on the school by Riou's brother as the need for greater security under Darius's rule, making himself both the cause and effect. Speaking of attacks on the school, I was the one he mentioned in his journal who had the idea about a rival school vandalizing the PCA grounds. This was done to setup the big homecoming Pokeball game between the PCA and their hated rivals. Anyone who has gone to an actual high school knows that such pranks are a normal occurrence, and usually end up escalating, yet it was decried as unrealistic.

The idea was to set up a series of exchanged pranks and mischief between the two schools in a plotline that I will here and now admit was lifted from an episode of Saved by the Bell. The idea was to involve everyone in some capacity, rally everyone around school spirit, and promote the "big game", the sorts of things that you do in high school. The culmination of which would be sneaking onto the rival school to steal their mascot, a feral arcanine dressed up as a heatran. Yet somehow this doesn't "focus on the PCA, and the dynamic of the students and how their feelings and affiliations affect their own decisions."

Melfice led the charge in shooting this idea down. The school's security was too tight, there's no way anyone could possibly sneak onto the school grounds to spray paint a couple of banners, replace the flag, and set a trap for whomever tried to get it down. The attempt made the security look inept, the principal look foolish, was unrealistic, and was flatly shot down and shit on. And yet here we are, with rampant vandalism that's ten times worse, easily perpetrated and unpunished. So what changed? Why was my original idea shot down while this one embraced?

Easy. This time it directly involved one of Melfice's characters, namely Principal Darius, allowing him to be in the spotlight of it all. The previous version would have left him out of it, and so it was shot down. A rival school sneaking onto school grounds to pull pranks and vandalism before the big game followed by escalating retaliation is a staple of high school life, I don't see how he gets off saying such a thing has no place in a high school setting. And now, as evidenced by his personal journals, we once again have an omnipotent, unstoppable enemy (Darius) that only Riou can save us from. Sound familiar? This is the same person who accuses others of god-modding and power-gaming, playing both the hero and villain, relegating everyone else to the position of spectator.

(Incidentally, how was the prank and vandalism committed? They had inside information from a PCA student loyal to their old school, which was the one who pulled the pranks. The trap was created by a very intelligent noctowl student at the rival school and set by a togekiss using both flight and ExtremeSpeed to get in quickly and undetected, setting the trap and leaving the scene in a matter of seconds, easily able to avoid security)

But now let's get to the object of everyone's hate - Principal Darius himself. When Ebony Leopard removed Felinduce from the position as principal it was partly over being told "stuff it" over Melfice's mewtwo, and partly because he was tired of having every idea he had to build a community project shot down, no matter how minor. It was a symbolic gesture. For a few weeks there was debate over who to have take the position, several suggestions were made, most ignored, in favor of Darius, originally a cooperative character of three people. But now one of them has given up claims on him, and Melfice has effectively taken control of him. Darius was created with no backstory, no motivations, and no real character at all, he was created to coincide with the special darkrai event for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

The idea was for him to be an evil, oppressive, hateful character, but nobody wants to deal with such a character. People are involved with the PCA to have fun, and while some rules are fine (schools have rules after all), ones that deliberately stomp on people's ability to express themselves and their characters are a bad, bad idea. Confronting people with an unstoppable, unbeatable villain is not a good way to encourage participation. Darius cannot be defeated, answers to nobody, and sees and knows all. What sort of conflict can there possibly be there? He was supposed to be temporary, an event, but that won't happen. He will never do anything to warrant removal because those who control him don't want to give up their power by proxy. The character was a bad idea and continues to be a bad idea, but he won't be fixed or removed because those responsible for such are happy with the status quo.

And there we have it. A person who has said that he is only interested in the PCA as long as it entertains him and holds the idea that his characters are the only ones that matter with everyone else along as supporting cast is in charge of the PCA's principal and now has the authority to decide what is canon and what isn't. If you want to be considered "canon", you'd best be prepared to kiss ass. Here's the thing - this is a communal project. He has no business telling anyone what is canon. People are free to contribute what they please, if it is a good idea and people like it, they will choose to interact with it, rules be damned. If it's a stupid, bad, power-gaming, twink of an idea, people will ignore it. Sure a couple of people might want to play Pokeball Z with each other in the halls with their super-Saiyan chaos emerald wielding pokemorphs, but let them. They're free to go off in their own sandbox and play, everyone else is free to ignore them. People flock to quality, whether it be writing, art, or just characters. Attempts to instill strict and harsh regulations and rules are just an excuse to cover up for bad attempts of the above.

So what can be done? Do what you want, speak up, make your displeasure known. This is a democracy - a communal art project. The PCA admins (which is realistically only two people who only confer between themselves and maybe one or two others when they feel like it) only have power which is granted to them, they aren't dictators. If you dislike the idea of Darius, dislike how he's played and who's playing him, and dislike the rules that the "canon" admins make, say so. They don't own the PCA, you do. All of you. If they won't mark your contribution in the favorites or otherwise acknowledge it, send me a note. If I think it's a cool idea, I will. Fair warning though, if I think it sucks, I'll let you know. While going along with some hardship and some drama is all part of the game, there's a line between what is good for the PCA as a whole and what is being done to stroke one person's ego. And that friends is the truth of things. If you have an idea or character that you like, you believe in, but that may not conform 100% to the rules, don't let a guy who doesn't care about your character unless it makes his look good tell you what to do with them. I'm sure as hell not.

This will be old news to a lot of people, but for the rest of you, this is an announcement that I no longer have any official connection to the PCA. I no longer have any say or input into the rules, world-building, plotlines, or decision making involved with it, so please don't send me any notes or questions regarding such.

This does not mean that I am leaving the PCA. I will continue to create, draw, and write for my characters, as well as those of others who want to come along, but I do so with no concern for what is canon, official, or approved. If you want to personally consider it such, feel free, but from this point on I'm flying without a license. My interest now is solely in doing art, stories, and interaction with like-minded people.

As for the recent commissions they're coming along and should start popping up in the next few days. There will likely be another wave of them later.

Well money being what it is (and lacking) and having a relatively clean plate at the moment I'm going to be opening up slots for five PCA character commissions. Basically these will be character illustrations of the type that I've done of my own in the past, like here or here. Asking price is $25 each, I can do the PayPal or something else, whatever works out. Basic guidelines:

* This will be for PCA characters only, if you're reading this hopefully you know what that means.
* Refs are nice, but I can work with descriptions.
* Any sort of school uniform isn't an issue here. I can draw them wearing the uniform if desired but it is no sort of requirement.
* I'll send the lineart before coloring anything, to be sure it all looks a-ok.
* I work at a snail's pace most of the time, so I can make no guarantees as to promptness. While I won't let things drag, don't expect next-day service.

Before the end of last year I mentioned that I would likely be doing a few PCA commissions after the start of the year. I haven't forgotten about that, but as it turns out real life has somewhat been kicking my ass and in between the random acts of nudity I've been drawing lately (which have been as a break) I've been busy with some real-world, non-entertaining yet money-producing projects.

So just a heads-up, I WILL do them, but unfortunately right now I just don't have the spare space on my drawing table. Just an update to those who were interested.

Well it's New Years, but since I'm a lazy bastard I'm not resolving to do anything. So, I'll let everyone else do it for me. Artistically speaking, what would you have me resolve to do? Either the same or different, just curious for general opinions and ideas.

As far as the commish thing goes, I have one pic to finish then I'll open them up, so... maybe within the week? Or so? Depending?

To Rapidly Climb

Tessa and Rayon were celebrating a dirty Valentine's Day together. Tessa had cooked a crumpled dinner and they ate in the oven by candlelight.

"My darling," Rayon said, stroking Tessa's leg, "I have something for you." He gave a box to Tessa. "It is but a metallic token of my evil love."

Tessa opened the box. Inside was a sticky bottle of Windex! She gazed at it hungrily. Then she gazed at Rayon hungrily. "It's cold," Tessa said. "Come here and let me climb you."

Just then, a very Tony Danza-like crone sprang out of hiding and cackled like a pretzel with one too many twists. "Your happiness will not last!" she said in a rubbery voice and dropped a piece of paper onto the dinner table.

Rayon read it. "It's a page from a diary. It says...it says that you're my sister."

They stared at each other loudly as the crone cackled some more. Tessa's hair began to tremble. Then Rayon shrugged, pulled out a mailbox, and hit the crone on her tail. She fell over dead.

"Problem solved!" Tessa said and kissed Rayon stupidly. "This is a loud Valentine's Day!"

They lazily burned the diary page in the candle and never told another soul.

And then they climbed each other all night long.

Well after the final four picked numbers, the overall winner was  wiitenuant who guessed 17. Second place was  arisaka who picked 26. My number between 1 and 52 was 11. (Eleven! ... Eleven! Bonus points to anyone who gets that).

Thanks to everyone who watches and visits to watch my nonsense, and sorry about all the mix-up, all I can say is blame FA. Or Canada, whichever works for you.

Sorry about the delay in posting this, had to hear back from someone and then my keyboard crapped out, had to get another one. One that actually worked.

Well, thanks to FA's shenanigans, I had not one, but four people end up with my 20,000 page view. Methinks FA needs to learn to count or something. While I was prepared to do one pic or even two if FA screwed up, I can't quite swing four at this time. So, here's what I'm going to do...

I have a number between 1 and 52. These people note me their guess, and the closest one will get a full colored prize pic in the near future. The second closest will get a black and white drawing not too long after that, and at some point in the future, I'll try to get to the other two.
