ok im not very good with statistics or surveys so someone may have to correct me on this one, but as far as the 'studies' are concerned, the part abt 'furries more likely to be LGBT+' is because you're narrowing down a sampling portion to a particular group of ppl (the furries) and the smaller sampling sizes you get the more apparent (as in higher percentage) things are. also those numbers only take into account ppl who came out as LGBT+, even then those numbers im very iffy about.
and the part where you delve into fetishes sounds like a recipe for disaster, like it REEKS of othering. what is it with ppl's fixations abt the sexual aspects of the furry fandom but not other subcultures?
now here comes the part where i'm REALLY FUCKING PISSED OFF as someone who's neurodivergent and disabled. to my knowledge i don't think you're neurodivergent/autistic, but *breathes in* BOY!!!! so you have no leg to stand on concerning autistic ppl who happen to be into furries (either sexually or non-sexually), but this fucking dudebro who happens to be you decides to talk over us anyway. also anyone can be 'really into' things. for autistic ppl this is called a special interest and for allistics theyre called 'hyperfixations'. also, autistic special interests can change over time, or may have more than one special interest. this whole segment here reeks of ableism and infantilization/fetishization of autistic ppl who happen to be interested in anthropomorphic animals (read: me, yeah im outing myself as autistic thanks to this stupid-ass video). again with the "ppl within a particular group are more likely to blah blah blah", and the percentage you showed abt autistic ppl in relation to the general population probably only takes into account ppl who were clinically diagnosed.

General | Posted 9 years agoDISCLAIMER: the furry fandom (like any community really) does indeed have many issues that need to be sorted out, some of the supposed 'stereotypes' and assumptions ppl have do have some truth to them. it's our job as a community to address these problems and to fix them so that the stigma surrounding us goes away. also this is mainly concerning my own personal feelings toward the matter. i'm not here to defend problematic ppl in the furry fandom
im sure you may/may not have known this but i've been drawing furry art since 2009. more like between 2009-2011, with only the occasional furry in later years. i think there might have been a few factors that lessened my motivation to draw them, & those factors seemed to seriously hurt my growth as an artist.
when i started drawing furries, i didnt know about the stigma surrounding anthro art. i thought it was just like drawing anything else. i didn't know what yiff was, i had no idea they were needlessly oversexualized by the ppl both inside & outside of the furry fandom. and when i first heard anything about it, ohhhh boy DID I FALL FOR IT. i may have even stated that i might as well cancel one of my ongoing projects bc of the furry stigma.. but yes it did affect me on a personal level (i wasnt even too into NSFW things back then). so over the years i subconsiously started drawing furries less & less despite me promising myself & others i'll get back into them over & over again. all bc i didnt want anybody thinking badly about me for drawing not even NSFW furry art.
now here's the disturbing part: when you enjoy something that isnt sexual by default but only to find out later that ppl are fetishizing it trying to make it seem like it's inherently sexual, you end up feeling dirty for liking said thing. let me explain a couple small personal examples to prove this point: sometimes i listen to and find new music on youtube, and one of those genres JUST SO HAPPENS to be dubstep/EDM/monstercat/etc. now because im a dummy i often wander into the comments section and there's gonna be at least one "eargasm" or "this turns me on", "i have sex to this music", or even misreading of lyrics to make the song seem dirty (such as one person's comment on a skrillex song--forgot which one it was-- "i heard 'penis in your butt'!" since then i regretted having that song on my playlist) the result? oh my god i feel so dirty listening to these songs (despite the songs arent sexual in any way)!! i know theyre just youtube comments but DAMN. or another example which involes ASMR videos. what's so bad about ASMR, it's just stimming right?? but again a large majority of people are making it out to be a sexual thing, HELL THE FINE BROS COMPARED IT TO FUCKING FURRIES IN THEIR VIDEO ABOUT ASMR. this is clearly a problem because it make ppl assume we just do these things to get horny, which is not the case for everyone (it definitely isnt for me). its a little similar to how a child calls their actual father 'daddy' only for the child to regret it afterward bc ppl make it out to be some disturbingly kinky term due to the disturbing rise in popularity of DDLG. but i digress. i don't wanna feel dirty, and i certainly dont do things (that i would publicly talk about) with the intent to get horny, no siree.
but even if the sexual association with furries goes away over time there's still one major problem, we cannot be taken seriously. ppl will laugh at us, our family our friends prospective employers & art college recruiters, etc. nevermind that furries/anthropomorphic animals are EVERYWHERE in mainstream media. it's the same thing with ppl who draw anime art, fanart, ppl who draw fantasy & sci-fi art, we're like teeny tiny ants compared to the giants that are art elitists, that the only 'high' art is realistic art w/ some deep meaning to it. its utter BS and theres racist & misogynistic implications and such. but that's for another day. its an ongoing battle between choosing to draw what i like/within my capability and keeping my artistic integrity by drawing things i feel weakly about just to appease some old rich white guy and get paid very little for it. i hate playing this fucking game. everyone has the right to draw what they want (within reason ofc), and i really wish this statement had some lasting effect. bc no matter what positivity i get for drawing my own shit i cant make it in society.
anyways, im just really fuckin tired man
