Superhero Fandom Ideas
Posted 5 years agoIt's been a while since I've posted an update. I've graduated vet school, and have been working as an emergency veterinarian for the last several months. It's a stressful job with really really long hours and usually involves delivering bad news to pets and their owners, which isn't fun. I'm still working to get into the zoo animal medicine field, which is wicked competitive, but I'm doing well.
- If you know anyone who is interested in becoming a veterinarian, I'm happy to talk with them about it :)
It's been a while since I left the superhero group, but I've had a ton of ideas, from characters ideas (at the bottom) to story ideas to themes, that I'd like to share. Feel free to use any of these!
-Add some headaches to your character's lives to help flesh them out. Give them appointments (doctor, dental, optometrist, bank, landlord, etc) that they need to schedule around. After a night on the job, have them need to grow grocery shopping. How they handle these everyday inconveniences amidst the dramatic heroing work can be interesting.
-With how much borderline sexual contact there is in the superhero biz (whether consensual or not), the BOS could offer regular and anonymous STI testing. Promote safe sex in your work :)
-Fighting and combat gets rough, and not everyone will come out without a scratch. Maybe they need a brace or splints on knees or fingers, or get some cracked or lost teeth and need some dental work after fights. I know it's not exactly 'pretty,' but it could give some minor character development opportunities.
-Ex: After a fight, a hero is broken up about needing a fake tooth. Another character comforts them with a 'Yeah, I've gotten a few of those already. No big deal! Here's my dentist's contact info, they do a great job!'
-Or it could even be like a 'who-has-it-worse' contest, with who has gotten the worst injuries.
-We're all aware of the minor theory in the MCU that Tony Stark has been nursing a left arm injury since the first Iron Man movie. Small attention to detail like this for your characters can really help bring you into the scene.
-Having a popular soap opera or tv show that only appears briefly, but across multiple stories, could be fun and world building. Only give really brief updates, but it could be important to the characters. If you know the Ratchet and Clank series, I'm thinking of their soap opera "Lance and Janet."
-When heroes are eavesdropping, goons could discuss random stuff, like the hot show or movie, instead of the villain's plans. If the goons reach a spoiler, the hero could blow their cover, yelling "No spoilers!"
-If knockout gas is anything like anesthetizing animals, it isn't benign or pretty when succumbing or recovering. When anesthetizing patients, they usually go through an excitement phase, with vocalizations and uncoordinated movements. A similar thing happens when they are waking up. Recovery isn't immediate either. There can be a continued clumsiness, spasms, headaches, grogginess, etc. It also affects certain people and breeds more (especially the huskies and other northern breeds). Also also, patients can rouse and look aware for a little bit with stimulation, but then basically fall back asleep for a while longer. Maybe some of the knockout gases have similar effects?
-Could be funny if a villain has captured a hero, and the hero keeps rousing slightly, the villain starts their maniacal speech, and the hero slumps down for a few more minutes. The villain is just itching or annoyed to continue with his/her planned events, and gets more impatient when restarting the speech.
-This could fit with the last one, but have heroes misjudge distances or the strength needed to perform an action. Some might be practiced and trained enough to not make these kinds of mistakes, but some of the more rookie characters might. It could add an interesting dynamic or plot device, even if only minor.
-Some of the heroes who get the metahuman powers (strength, endurance, etc) may have old hobbies or sports that are no longer tiring, or they don't feel sore. By noting this, you can show some character growth. Are they happy at how well they do, or are they disappointed in the lack of a challenge...?
-Show your character's passion for their job/career (not the heroing, if they have another job). They decided that this job was what they wanted to do for the rest of their life, and committed to pursuing it. The career should have a pretty big impact on their lives. Why do they like it, why are they good at it? What makes a bad day on this job?
-On the other hand, not all heroes will have jobs they want or enjoy. Maybe they wish they were at gunpoint or brawling with dangerous villains instead of taking another shift.
-On a similar note, characters should also be passionate about their hobbies, especially with their limited free time. Show them wanting to do the hobby, and angry when they can't, or even considering ditching other obligations just to have the time to do the hobby.
-In real life, marsupials have lower metabolic rates, and don't need as much energy, and often run at a lower temperature. This could be shown if marsupial characters either eat smaller portions, or are more prone to gaining a few pounds.
-How does the weather play a role in characters' lives? Is their outfit too hot or cold? Could they have more than one outfit? Is it slippery, foggy, bright, loud? Could their glasses/goggles/visors fog up?
-Superheroes, even villains, are under a lot of stress. Maybe they don't develop the best coping mechanisms (Ex: binging Netflix, tobacco, drugs, masturbating, napping, overeating, impulse buying).
-The Pink Lady Powder, or other gender-swapping powers, could be used to show support for people going through the trans-gendering procedure, or LGBTQ+. It could be utilized in demonstrations or parades or something.
-Some heroes may want to participate in charities, as these are great ways to foster community and show that they really care. As important as fighting criminals is, it's a reactionary outlook that doesn't help the general population very much (Batman does this religiously yet Gotham is still a cesspool of crime). Heroes can act as examples and try to inspire civilians to care and do the right thing.
-Or even, force your begrudging heroes to participate in a charity event for some community service. Do they actually enjoy it in the end?
-Heroes can help with routine things, like traffic stops, stalled/broken down cars, window washing, tossing money to street performers or homeless, building low-income housing, etc. It's not gritty or glamorous, but it can help flesh out some characters who just want to help, whether large-scale disaster or mild inconveniences.
-Spiderman Homecoming was full of gems, but one of the things that stands out is that it felt more real world than a lot of superhero movies, in terms of the normal people in the universe. Spider-Man can swing around by web, jump high, cling to walls...and some guy just wants to see a backflip. Or he helps someone with directions. Or people discuss superheroes lightly, like who the like, or FMK.
-Civilians may want to interact with heroes, or possibly try to help, for better or worse. Perhaps they get in the way, or rubberneck. Perhaps our heroes could pose for selfies, or give shout outs to random citizens. Maybe there is a public relations issue if a hero was rude to some civilians. Maybe heroes meet their personal local heros (athletes, newscasters, etc).
-With so many prison breaks, maybe heroes are assigned to guard the prison. This opens many routes for further stories and conflicts to continue (ex: A villain is caught in one story, and the start of another is about securing them in the prison). Maybe the posted hero can be bribed, or is a traitor, or a villain's henchman in disguise, or just doesn't show up for their shift.
-Not all civilian identities have great living situations. This article by Dorkly does a pretty good job explaining how compelling a character's, in this case Spider-Man's, story is when there are multiple layers of stress to deal with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n_UvCH8VZY
-A story from the conflict's loser perspective is an untapped market. This could be a hero or a villain, and offers a chance to see a character at a low point.
-Characters could spontaneously remember an embarrassing moment from their past. It could be funny or relatable, and give a little depth to the character.
-Maybe a position in the BOS is looking for applicants. Characters discuss who would be a good and poor candidate, and maybe spur each other on. The application process could take place over several stories, as characters work up the courage to apply, and as the application pool is narrowed. Even stories focused on characters that aren't involved can have some mention, helping with crosstalk between stories and making the universe feel more alive.
-Maybe there is a villain who doesn't hold grudges against heroes. After all, the hero's job is to stop villains, it's hardly personal.
-Then maybe the villain gets beaten by a hero who is cocky and gloats and brags about beating them down, even publicly.
-I think that more conflict between characters' personal and professional relationships could add a lot of drama and development. For example, 2 heroes have a negative personal relationship, but have a shared opinion concerning how to handle a disaster or plan a response during a meeting. They may be annoyed at agreeing, or grow to realize that each other isn't all bad. Have more complex characters, that are less easy-to-hate or easy-to-love. No one gets along with all their coworkers, but we understand their role.
-One idea I always wanted to develop was a journalist trying to write a deep, honest look into what being a superhero is all about. They could be allowed into the BOS or other such institution, or unregistereds, and interview various heroes about their philosophies, experiences, complaints, and so on. Of course, the meetings are in pre-arranged locations, with secrecy and security the most important aspects, and will remain as anonymous as the hero would like.
-Heroes could comment on the difficulties in their personal lives (love/family life, loss of free time, financial difficulties, working holidays, the joys and headaches dealing with civilians, how they feel about being heroes, opinions of other heroes or villains, the highs of victory or the devastation of losing a partner or civilian on their watch).
-It could be very light-hearted and cherry, or emotional and somber, based on the hero. Some heroes may be comfortable with disclosing info, or happy to have a chance to vent to a large-scale audience, or shifty and uncomfortable. This is a great chance to explore and develop other aspects of your characters!
-A character could have had a recent scare/trauma on the job. They could try to 'avoid' heroing duty by working more at a desk job in the BOS or spend more time at their civilian job (or lie about being at their civilian job more).
-So often a hero tries to take care of a situation they're not equipped for. It'd be interesting to see a character who is aware of their limitations, and is willing to call in more qualified help. This offers a chance for them to be mature and realize what is at stake. Further, it'd be interesting to see someone operate within but apart from the regulation and bureaucracy of BOS. For example, an unregistered hero may need to get backup through a direct call or anonymous tip to the BOS.
-The story could then switch perspective of the hero who has been assigned to the mission.
-This could be very interesting to see what each character struggled with, and how it was no big deal for another hero to handle.
-With how much stress heroes are under, it may be BOS mandated that they regularly receive psychiatric debriefing, and help if indicated.
-I had the idea of Waverider, my most jovial and light-hearted character, going to his appointment cheerfully, and as they talk, he gets uncharacteristically somber, and even bursts into tears from a tragic happening. As he leaves the appointment, he takes a second to compose himself, and steps out cheery, putting up a front.
-A personal alliance between a hero and villain could be crazy interesting.
-For example, my character Ice Queen and French Rose would discover each other's identities, and blackmail each other into silence. This alliance would definitely be tenuous, but it's also an interesting dynamic that could grow to a friendship, or remain skeptical.
-Brands can help flesh out the universe, either as a place regularly attended by a character, or just mentioned. Here's a few ideas: Buck Naked clothing, Bare Arms Boxing, Sole Purpose shoe store, Pretty Cut and Dry hair salon, A Cut Above hair salon, Gazelle Gazette newspaper.
XXX Possible character ideas from here on. These may be mainly heroes or civilians. Some of these are silly, others gripping, and most barebones in terms of development. They can be as developed or background material as you want, and feel free to use any.
-A character that is truly invincible, but maybe not strong (even scrawny) could be fun and interesting. He can enter fights with the strongest of calamities and come out unscathed, but he can't hurt them very badly either, or may even struggle when fighting a normal henchman. He'd have to improvise with these powers. Maybe he's just a distraction, or a human shield. It may take some creativity to be fun. It also offers a chance to practice describing combat, without suffering from headaches or injuries, but still becoming disoriented with being thrown and suddenly stopping.
-A hero could adopt 2 personas; One that is a mainstream hero that seeks to be a good example and champion of the people, and the other is more of an antihero, who does the more extreme, less kosher things to keep everyone safe. This hero basically acts as 2 heroes with distinctly different goals, and keeps it secret to hide any drama or fallout. He could struggle with the conflict and disparity between the two identities. kinda thinking of Robin and Red Hood.
-The news is overstuffed with stories of tragedies. Maybe there is a journalist who remains positive and optimistic, and tries extremely hard to chase down or find stories that are pleasant and uplifting.
-A registered, but inactive super, who never intended to use their powers, must suddenly defend themselves. Maybe they don't know any self-defense techniques or how to control their powers. Suddenly we have a novice super in a fight for their life (or wallet)!
-A musk deer character could have a muzzle mask or full head helmet, with the muzzle portion being extra large to hide his tusks and help keep his identity/species secret.
-A deer character could have fake antlers for his uniform, so that when they are shed seasonally, he can delay the reveal and help keep his identity secret.
-A Klipspringer character that is a ballet dancer or Cirque de Sole performer, what with the teeny narrow and upright hooves.
-A superhero that is a pilot/stewardess for a civilian job may be neat, as their super identity could appear seemingly randomly across the globe.
-Undeveloped super names:
-MesmerEyes, AnalEyes
-Circuit Breaker
-Caldera
-Rerun, Flashback
-Chloro-Phil, Dandy Lion, Hedge Hog
-Virga
-Turntable
-Hard Reset
-Birdshot, Buckshot, Bloodshot, Hotshot
-Deadshot, Deadeye
-Apocalips, Apocalisp, Atacolypse
-Doomsneigh, Doomsbray, Doomsplay
These next few are a bit more developed, and if you're interested, just ask and I'll be happy to give you any more info I had on them :)
-Echo: can mimic others' powers, but perhaps they are slightly warped?
-Blink: an underage pacifist with super speed, who works in the BOS as a receptionist, not an active field agent. She likes to race the computer system
-Lifeline: an opossum who can animate objects, bringing them to some semblance of life. Hero, villain, or rogue.
-Pallet or Swatch: uses various powers based on the colors in the immediate area. (Admittedly, I haven't been able to figure out how these work yet...)
-Unknown name: The powers are about vibration manipulation. This character can attack with the frequencies targeted to do the most damage, or shatter objects (which also offers the opportunity for a character lacking super strength to compete with tough opponents). It may take a little fine-tuning to get the proper frequency for the material. This power also grants something similar to the seismic sense in Avatar (feeling the vibrations through the ground to get a mental map/layout of the area). This could work, or not work, on liquids.
-Also, if anyone is interested in any of my more established characters, I may be willing to give them up. I feel bad that all the work was put into creating them and now they just gather dust.

TMI Tuesday
Posted 9 years agoBeen a while since I made a journal, so here's a new one. Ask me anything, be it about me, about you, or silly! I'll try to be as (brutally) honest as possible.
Con Meme
Posted 10 years agoHey peeps, vet school is going well. It's nice to be with a bunch of other like-minded students. Anyway, I'm heading to Midwest FurFest next weekend, so here comes the obligatory convention meme!
Where are you staying?
In a hotel a hop, skip, and a jump away.
What day are you getting there?
Friday Eve, post physical exam exam :/
Who will you be rooming with?
A classmate, my twin, his friend, and one of my best friends who isn't a furry.
Who will you hang out with during the convention?
The aforementioned peeps.
How can I find you?
You won't find me, I'll find you, but by then it will be too late.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I would love to go to the comparative anatomy and science based panels (the green blocks on the schedule), and probably some of the games and dances. Hopefully they'll play some swing music!
Are you attending any stage or public performances?
If there is swing or tango, you'll find me there.
Will you be suiting?
Nope, but my twin will.
Which suit(s) are you bringing?
Definitely my birthday suit.
Do you draw?
In my head.
Are you taking commissions or trades?
I'll trade thoughts all day.
How old are you?
22
How tall are you?
5'6"
Can I talk to you?
If you speak the language of love.
Can I touch you?
Buy me dinner and we'll see where things lead!
Can I visit your room?
Only if you know the secret knock.
Can I buy you drinks?

Internship Completed
Posted 10 years agoFinished up my internship in Houston, and after a 19 hour drive, I'm back in the Dairyland. I enjoyed everything about it, the animals, the physical work, the fun and nice keepers and other interns. The only thing I didn't like was the city traffic. Besides shoveling a literal shit ton of poop and sorting animal food, I have:
Cared for: red river hogs, maned wolf, anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, rheas, bongos, duikers, ground hornbills, gerenuks, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinos, kudus, elands, nyalas, storks, okapis, Speke's gazelles, blue cranes, and California sea lions
Pet: ostriches, rheas, bongos, duikers, capybaras, giraffes, okapis, eland, rhinos
Fed by hand: duikers, giraffes, rheas, bongos, okapis, gerenuks, hornbills, storks, blue cranes, rhinos, ostrichs, capybaras, maned wolf (sorta)
Been licked by giraffes, okapis, anteaters, and bongos
Been sneezed on by a giraffe
'Kissed' giraffes
Been pecked by rhea and ostriches
Helped move 2 bongos, a tapir, and a zebra
Broken a window
Cared for a newborn nyala
Lost an adult giraffe, a neonatal giraffe, and a newborn nyala
Observed medical procedures on a okapi, nyala, wolf, and eland
My favorites were the anteaters, rhea, bongo, and absolutely the duiker!
Outside of the zoo, I went to a roller derby, which was really impressive and a ton of fun, and I saw the Ringling Bros Circus, which also was really impressive and fun! I visited the Museum of Natural History, and their paleontology exhibit is amazing! And after my comparative anatomy class, I could appreciate a lot more.
I'm really going to miss the zoo and my coworkers, but life must go on. I have a week to take a break, and then I move to start vet school. Wish me luck!

Tenant-tive Months Ahead
Posted 10 years agoI’ve been applying to veterinary medical schools and internships across the states for the last few months. Here’s the breakdown:
Vet Med School:
University of Minnesota: Interviewed, Rejected
Ross University: Interviewed, Accepted
University of Madison: Accepted
Internships:
Alaska Sea Life Center: (Marine Mammal Stranding, Marine Mammal Husbandry): Rejected
Milwaukee Humane Society: No response
Washington Rocky Shores/Tundra: Rejected
Dallas Zoo: Phone Interviewed, Rejected
California’s The Zoo Conservation Ambassadors: Late contact
Milwaukee Oceans of Fun: Interviewed twice, Rejected
Houston Zoo: Phone Interviewed, Accepted!
So I'll be heading 1200 miles south to Houston, Texas to intern in the Zoo's Hoofstock Department! I'll basically be a zookeeper and shovel the piles of giraffes, okapis, warthogs, deer, and horse and bovine species! Gotta say, it feels great to have a zoo internship to get experience and become more valuable in this competitive field. And I haven't even started vet school.
The internship lasts roughly 3 months, and I'll return home just in time to settle in to Madison and start vet school! Seems like life's tutorial level is wrapping up, and about time!

The Bachelor Life
Posted 10 years agoI graduated last week, and am officially a bachelor...of biology! And before I'm even 22! I came out top of my class, with a GPA around 3.975ish. My twin edged me out for valedictorian, though he's not impressed. I learned a lot of cool things this semester, particularly in Mammalogy, Comparative Vertebrate Morphology, and Asian Religions. I've finished applying to vet school, but I won't hear until April whether I've been accepted or not. In the mean time, I'm looking into internships at zoos or wildlife centers. There's a sea lion care one right in my local zoo!
The thing I'm most grateful for is a major mood change. I've been relatively happy since early October, and it's great. Not to say I don't get bummed out, but in general I feel lighter, freer, than I have since grade school. Self-attacking thoughts haven't been able to stay in my head for longer than a few minutes. Concentrating on breathing and reminding myself 'It'll be ok' helps a lot. I have been keeping a daily mood journal (writing down moods, events, sleep and activity quality, the weather, and my motivation and productivity). I'm hoping that I can look over it in a year and find tricks to be happier.
I've been in the chat less over the last few months, and I'm actually much happier that way. I'll only be on a few times a week, and instead work on writing and coloring.
Thanks for listening, and have a great holiday season!

Let's Get This Over With
Posted 11 years agoBack at school for my last semester of undergrad. Gotta say, I've barely gotten back and I can't wait to leave. This semester might have a few interesting classes, but it'll mostly be crappy gen eds. I'm hoping to make the most of the clubs this semester, like swing dance, ballroom, and fight club, but it's completely dependent on my mood.
This past summer has been one of the worst I've had. There were only 3 or 4 intermittent weeks that I wasn't in a generally negative mood, and they usually gave way to the worst I've ever felt. The first half I was frustrated all the time, the second half was feelings of loneliness and worthlessness. Had a few days I was so unhappy I didn't eat, or had a few crying spells. Working at the dog boarding kennels was terrible. Just too many dogs to manage, and frustration bubbled over to the point of cruelty. I'm so disappointed in myself that I couldn't handle my temper any better. Procrastinated way way too long on starting the vet school application, so now there's a lot of catch up I need to do. Barely done any coloring over the last few months, no motivation. On the plus side, I walked over 500 miles.
Started shadowing another vet clinic, and that was pretty fun. The vets are funny and make sure I learn something each visit, and I got to try a couple minor things like placing breathing tubes or placing vein catheters. Hope I can go back there for more opportunities.

Junior Year Complete
Posted 11 years agoFinished up my third year of undergrad. This year, frankly, sucked. None of my classes were very interesting, and is was busywork upon busywork. Change of plans: Graduating a semester early, so this next semester is packed full of courses, mostly the worthless gen eds. Gonna be hell, but at least I'll finish up there. I've been feeling like undergrad has been a huge waste of time.
This summer is going to be extremely busy. I'll be working at the dog boarding kennels a lot, and trying to shadow some veterinarians. Plus, applying to vet schools, which is time intensive. I definitely won't be on as much as when I was at school. The job is a split shift, so I'll need to go to bed early, and be offline all day. And scheduled for a lot of hours, especially over the weekend.
Seems to be a family of four fox kits and a vixen across the street. My brother will try to make friends with them :)
So many stories to catch up on, and write, so little time, and so little motivation.

Back to the Grind
Posted 11 years agoSpring break is over, time to get back to my boring classes. Had jury duty over the break, and it was every bit as boring as I thought it would be, and then some. But at least it only lasted a day.
The Pre-Vet Symposium was fun. A 3 hour drive got my uni's club to the vet school, and after a meh dinner (with yummy rolls!) and a restless night, we started our series of lectures and labs. The lectures were much more fun than the labs, and it was really nice to learn stuff besides the physics lenses or 'what is a cell' review that college is determined to make me repeat in my sleep. Here's some fun facts of what I learned!
There are 12,063 zoonotic diseases (ones that can transfer between animals and humans)
Ultrapotent opioids used for anesthesia. Takes the large animals down fast, will kill humans in no time.
At some zoos, 'shoot to kill' teams are trained annually, in case a dangerous animal escapes.
Behavioral training: To ensure safety of keepers, vets, and animals, and to limit anesthesia and its risks.
'Station': go to a certain spot for various purposes
'Target': maintain contact with item, like a ball on a stick
Get on a scale to be weighed
'Open mouth': for exams, oral medication, or tooth brushing
'Present paw/flipper': animal will offer forearm, for exams, nail trimming, blood draws
Tolerate touch: allow ultrasounds, injections, blood draws, listen to lungs/heart, take temperature, take X-rays, ear exams, tortoise rests chin on palm, tolerate eye drops
breathe on command: to take gas anesthesia
Most animals can be trained, as long as you can find what motivates them
Even alligators, snakes, and turtles can be trained, though it takes a while since they may not eat daily.
There are animal STDs.
There are very few nutritionists in exotics, or manuals for feeding them.
SWAG: Scientific Wild Ass Guess
Turtles are very hardy and heal well, especially their shells.
Seals are prone to eye problems and dental diseases.
Giraffes have a 30% mortality rate when anesthetized, due to neck trauma. Also, they don't store fat.
The hyrax is most closely related to the elephant. This little guinea pig like animal has a ruminant digestive tract.
Rhinos love getting belly rubs.

Spring Break Time
Posted 11 years agoSchool's been going for a few weeks now, and so far, it's a bore snore. All my classes are science, and most are biology based, but it's still uninteresting. Haven't been doing as well as I would've liked on exams, scraping out B+'s because I mind blank or my professor is a nitpicker. Even my blood test was a B+! ;P
On the plus side, I'm approved to color
Bluwolf0's work! If you want anything done, lemme know! Prices vary based on complexity of the scene or the character's markings. Usually about $10-$15. If you can't do pay or do Paypal, we can prolly work something out :)
As for activities around here, I hammered out a story for the Valentine's contest, and even though I'm not very impressed by it, I'm proud I finished an idea! Hopefully now I can get on and finish up In Hot Water...
Spring break starts tomorrow, so it'll be sun and fun...and jury duty all week. I'll be at home for the break. (The wifi is on the fritz, but I'll see if I can fix it. Otherwise I'll just have to plug into the modem.) Friday the 21st, though, my university's Pre-Veterinary Club will be going to the Veterinary Symposium, for some fancy meals, lessons and labs, and a dance. It'll be fun, though I didn't get in the labs I wanted. Symposium runs through Sunday morning, so I won't be on at all that weekend.

Merry Christmas!
Posted 11 years agoMerry Christmas to my friends and watchers! Hope you enjoy the season!
Made it to Arizona safely after 2 full days in the car! Currently mooching internet from some public Wi-Fi. Not sure if I'll lose it, but hey, can't complain!

Happy Holidays
Posted 11 years agoFinals are over, I've passed every class
At home I now am, to sit on my ass
Next morrow I will journey, on a trip so far
Ugh, I can't wait, two days in a car
Time may be odd, a connection I'll seek
Making no promises, I'll return in a week
Home I will be, birthday twenty-first
Water only, no alcohol, will quench any thirst
Then the rest I will work, draw, and write
Perhaps a commission or two, of a lady so white
So tell me, in this holiday season
What your characters would like, and give me a reason
For Justin a frame, to enjoy times past
Not much for Tania, peace and quiet at long last
Mona a lovely dress, so that he may catch the hint
Ben, some music, the Beach Boys in mint
Send Aneta to a spa, a treat from the ice
And to all, may your vacations ever be nice!

Happy Thanksgiving
Posted 12 years agoIt's that time of year again. The holiday decorations, music, and, worst of all, commercials are pervading everything. But it's also Thanksgiving, so get your belts loosened! Let's hear what you, and your characters are grateful for, and what his/her favorite dish is! (Apologies if you do not partake)
Your lovable collie nerd
Grateful For: My dad is cancer free and recovering from the surgery
Fave Dish: Cornbread!
Justin Sathers
Grateful For: I can still have Thanksgiving with my family and Jenny's. *Sniff*
Fave Dish: A slice of turkey soaked in gravy, on cornbread.
Mona Gordon
Grateful For: Justin lets me join his family for the holidays, since I can't visit mine.
Fave Dish: Pumpkin pie with a dollop of whipped cream. Mmh!
Ben Goodell
Grateful For: Like, hooking up with Regina, dude! Oh, and my crib is still standing after that last storm! Too close!"
Fave Dish: Stuffing!
Tania Conerly
Grateful For: Not being stuck in that infernal orphanage.
Fave Dish: Cranberry sauce.
I'm heading home for the rest of the week, so I won't be on too much. Have fun!
P.S. School is going well. Kicking butts and taking names.

Summer is Over
Posted 12 years agoHello. Just got back to school. I'm in a suite with 3 other people (my twin, a friend, and some random guy we are all hoping isn't loud or annoying). This is the first time I've had a room to myself! (But there's no way to hang any decorations Xo) Should be pretty nice, and I'll have to cook a bit, so I'm hoping to learn a few more dishes, and not live off grilled cheese and deli sandwiches, not there's anything wrong with that! All my classes are science based, so that should be interesting. I'm gonna try to go to swing dance club and ballroom dance club fairly regularly to try to get better.
Most of my summer was walking my dog Sherman, working at the dog daycare/boarding kennels, or waiting for one of those. Walking the Sherminator was fun, went for 2-4 two mile walks a day, depending on heat. Working was fine, very frustrating at times (both because some of the dogs are horribly behaved and my coworkers were slackers), but it was a stable job and I made some good money.
Hung out with a few of my friends occasionally. We've almost beaten a racing game that we've been working on for 9 years! Just two more gold medals on two damn beat-the-clock laps! Only talked with my crush a few times because she was dealing with some personal stuff. Hopefully this semester goes better.
Not sure what kind of veterinarian I want to be anymore. Working with so many dogs and shadowing a small animal vet a lot has kinda killed any desire to be with a ton of the critters. I'm thinking of moving on to exotic animals. Dolphins, seals, and otters seem fun to treat.
Dad's cancer treatment is going well. He has completed the chemo and radiation, and any compromised lymph nodes were removed. He still has to take too many pills. Now we're just waiting for a liver to become available for transplant. Had two false alarms in the last two weeks, so it might not be too long to wait.
I'm realizing I have almost no talents. I'm not very creative, good at sports, don't have good social skills, not artistically inclined, and am not good at music. All I've ever really been good at is academics, and my brother is smarter...On the plus side, I haven't been depressed since the first week in May!
Over the summer I thought a lot about leaving the BOS/Colmaton group. I really haven't contributed much to it; not many ideas, chars, stories, artworks, etc. I'm gonna try to do more, and finally finish a fricking story soon. Guess we'll see how semester goes...

Sophomore Year Complete!
Posted 12 years agoFinished up my fourth semester of college. Still have 10 years to go. Didn't do as well as I would have hoped on the final exams (damn Minecraft addiction), but I should have earned just about all A's again! This semester wasn't nearly as horrible as I thought it was going to be before it started. Heck, it's my favorite semester I've had! Learned a lot, and the classes were genuinely college classes.
Symphony Band: Played some cool songs. Check out Whatsoever Things by Mark Camphouse
Physiological Psych: Very interesting, learned a wide range of info, including gender differences and emergency medicine. (And the secret of romance! :D )
Organic Chem 2: Much trickier than O chem 1. Had to memorize 60+ reactions, mechanisms, solvents, etc. But the lab section was great! Only 6 people, my twin and I included. We brought a speaker and listened to Ipods and played trivia games with everyone.
Microbiology: Really easy, didn't learn too much.
Ecology and Evolution: Hilarious, enthusiastic teacher. Interesting material, a big focus on linking everything together, which is sorely lacking in education. I recommend reading Ishmael, by David Quinn.
Fundamental Biological Investigations: Boring, tedious class about conducting research and writing the dry papers. Didn't help that we were outside for hours on the two coldest days of the winter.
Didn't have any motivation to participate in Swing Dance Club. Pre-Vet Club was pretty fun, went to an open house, and then the zoo! Kept in contact with my crush Carly. She even came out and visited twice :'D Kinda wish I had some private time with her without my brother, but I'll take what I can get. Hopefully we'll stay in contact, maybe even visit over the summer. I'm not doing marching band next semester because it's a huge time commitment and I have full credits, though the theme is sci-fi.
I want to finish Part 1 of the 'How Waverider Met Tsunami' by the end of the month, then do Part 1, then finish/redo Justin Time's intro story.
My schedule is going to change now that I'm heading back home. I'll be on a lot less, maybe only nights. Hope everyone is doing well too :)

Hacker alert?
Posted 12 years agoAt the suggestion of

Video Game Meme
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone and anyone. School's been going well. My favorite class is easily Physiological Psychology. We learn a lot, and much of it is random knowledge ranging from emergency medicine to some mental disorders to the gender differences. It's a lot of fun and the reason I get up MWF. Anyway, been a while since I've done a journal, so I'm gonna do something fun! The Video Game Meme stolen from
Leafthornton!
1. When did you first become interested in video games?
I first really got into video games in first grade when my friend brought over his N64, and introduced me to one of my favorite series, Legend of Zelda
2. What was the first console you've ever played with?
The first console was either an N64, or a Gameboy Color.
3. What games did you like playing when you were younger?
As a youngster, my life revolved around Zelda, Pokemon, and Super Smash Bros.
4. Name up to three video game characters you like and why.
Amaterasu Okami-How can you not like a Japanese goddess reincarnated in the form of a dazzling white wolf, traveling with a hilarious sprite in a land of fantastical caligraphy-style graphics!
Sly Cooper-A super suave, charming racoon thief that has all the skills!
Glados-I love how sadistic and funny she is! Always there to make you feel like you are worth less than the dirt you stand on. She simply wants revenge, and to further the cause of science! A true role model
5. Name up to three video game characters you don't like and why.
Most of the NPCs in Skyrim-They all have this effin annoying attitude that they are completely badass and you aren't worth fighting, and they are incredibly flat in personality. I have yet to meet one humble man. And the f***king kids!
Nix-From Infamous 2. I can't stand her clothing, her powers are disgusting, and don't even get me started on that grammar!
People who think COD is the best thing ever. Not to say they aren't fun from time to time, but all the games are pretty much the same, and everyone gets way to into it and swears like 10 sailors. Really annoying.
6. What is your most favorite console and why?
Only played the Wii U once, but it was a riot!
7. What is your least favorite console and why?
I don't like Sony Playstation (I like some of the games, but not the council) because they continuously slack off on some of the features, don't have backwards compatibility, and most of their games are about making a flat character that is simply as badass as possible.
8. What type of games do you typically like to play?
I like adventure games and games you can play with friends (that don't ruin you're friendships)
9. What genres are your strongest/weakest to you?
My strongest genres are Pokemon and some adventure games. I'm not very good at side-scrolling fighters.
10. What is your most favorite game?
Okami is definitely my favorite game of all time. It was beautiful, hilarious, and, perhaps most importantly, emotionally engaging. Not too many games that do that.
11. What is you least favorite game?
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future for a ton of reasons. First, being a dolphin, you breathe air, and the majority of levels are in underwater caves or machines, and you are dealing with . Second, the game is too dark to see anything. It helps to turn the brightness of your TV up to 'Sun in the backyard' level...kinda. You can use sonar for a map in the caves, but that takes extra air. The maps also didn't show depth, so when it crossed over, you couldn't tell which way you were going. Attacking most of the enemies hurts you. The controls are difficult to get used to. Health is in the form of fish, which are very hard to catch, and some poison you until you die. The enemies are freakin' aliens! WTF!? Most of them hide very well, shoot homing missiles, and can't die. Some of the boss fights were cool, but didn't allow one teeny weeny screw up, or you're dead. Just an awful game, and I want my life back. On the plus side, you could tail walk on the surface.
12. Do you like to play single player or multiplayer?
Either, depends if I'm with friends.
13. What was your most memorable moment in a game?
There are tons, mostly with friends, but one of them is beating Okami. I can't listen to one of the songs without crying. Also, Minecraft and philosophy nights with friends!
14. What was the funniest moment in a game you played?
Have had tons, mostly involving Smash Bros. One of the more recent was with the Wii U. We played with the 'take a picture of you to make a Mii' feature for an hour! One of my friends looked like a stoner!
15. What video game moment made you sad or depressed?
Everything in Ecco. Did I mention the plot was written by a sci-fi writer, and the levels are in the dankest, darkest, filthiest water. In the 'Human World' levels, its as if they melted Forest Green crayon and filled the ocean. The narration was depressing, the final boss was depressing (btw, you're in the chest cavity of the alien queen, ramming its heart before it fills with blood and you either dissolve or drown).
16. What were some of the more frustrating moments you've had while playing video games?
Everything in Ecco. Some of the timed runs in Sly Cooper 1. And the water temple in Majora's Mask. And running across 4 planets, back and forth, in Metroid Prime Corruption.
17. When you play online, do you tend to talk a lot or play quietly?
People can't hear me, and I try to forget what they say about my mother.
18. Ever played in tournaments or won any prizes?
Only with friends.
19. Do you get any merchandise involving games (posters, hats, etc.)?
Guide books! and posters that come in guide books.
20. If there was one thing you would like to do that came from a video game, what would it be?
That's a toughy. Probably do all the super sneaky thief moves from Sly Cooper, and be able to come up with one-liners.
Hope everyone has been doing well! Let's hear your video game preferences!

It's My Birthday
Posted 12 years agoToday is my 20th birthday, time to reflect:
The past 20 years have produced a tiny, intelligent boy with an introverted, cynical attitude. I’ve had a very nice childhood: loving family, no major hardships, good school, etc. I’ve only had a couple of friends, but they’ve been good friends, and for the most part I’ve kept in touch. Only had a few love interests, and have only gotten to the level of ‘friend’ in the latest one. I’ve always done extremely well in academia, though my twin brother would win in a contest.
Still doing well in college. Only one A- (in drawing), the rest were A’s. Recently my dad was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. This doesn’t scare me as much as my mom having gone on antidepressants. But we have an excellent team of doctors treating him, so it should work out. With all the recent shootings (movie theaters, schools, kindergartens, on firemen and police, etc), I’m forced to ask, Was it this bad twenty years ago?
I am hoping the next twenty years brings my own little slice of the American Dream: a loving wife, perhaps a few kidlets, a safe home, a secure job (as a small animal veterinarian). Not sure how likely this is with how wobbly times are, but a man can dream.
New Year's resolution for this year is to get better at letting go of negative emotions
Happy new year! Hope 2013 is good to all of you

Semester is Over
Posted 12 years agoAnother semester is done (almost). Just have a genetics final exam at the last exam slot. Winter Storm Draco certainly helped out: lots of exams were cancelled, including my organic chem exam :) Did well on my drawing project. It was supposed to take 10 hours of work, but, as always, I put in a lot more time because I'm really slow. Cell Bio exam was easy at the start, complete crap at the end. Sum up:
Marching band: Thriller was fun, though as a whole, not as fun as last year.
Symphony band: Only played a few cool songs, namely Undertow by John Mackey
Organic chem: Tricky at times due to memorizing a lot of reactions, catalysts, and mechanisms, but fun and the teacher was very nice and had a couple of adorable jokes.
Genetics: Easy, teacher was monotone, but very nice. Also, he expressed how interesting, instead of how awful, a lot of diseases are, which is a nice reprieve from all the touchy-feely "it's too bad people have that" crap.
Cell Bio: easy, except that our teacher was terrible. She focused way too much on specific examples and things barely related to the course. Kept cramming nanotechnology down our throats because it's her specialty. (as a kid, I never would have thought that I wouldn't want to learn nanotech, but my 'teacher' changed that)
This semester was alright. For the first week I was fairly relaxed, but for the bulk of the semester, I was depressed, a heavy, mind-numbing depression brought on by boredom and hopelessness. Most of the time I barely had the motivation to go on the forums. The only reason I did come on so often is that I had nothing else to do. I haven't done any writing or anything for the past couple weeks either. This continued until about three weeks ago. Started to get excited that it was almost over, seemed to get on better terms with the few friends I have here (at college). A little crush I had on a friend, Carly, developed into a major crush. She was in my cell bio class, and we often vented about the teacher. She'd go to my symphony band concerts, I'd go to her musical soroity concerts (and try not to stare too much). Afterwards, I walked her back to her apartment (which is on the way to my dorm). She vented a little about her bf, said that he had to talk to her but it was nothing bad. Turns out he dumped her. Here I thought, "Too bad for her, but an opportunity for me." I was as supportive as I could, without being corny or obvious. The following Tuesday we finished up cell bio lab, so I asked if she wanted to join me at swing dance club to celebrate. (Yeah, she's pretty much the only girl that likes swing dancing) She did, we had fun, and I was on a cloud for a day, until my regular, pessimistic mood came back. Asked her to swing dance again, but she had her 'girls' night' so that didn't happen. Well crap, but I understand: that'd be like cancelling Minecraft/philosophy night with my friends. I knew that she was going to be starting grad school in June, but I didn't know that she was taking next semester off until about a week ago. Welcome back depression.
Next semester is going to be crappy: Carly is gone, my one other friend is studying abroad, and I have teh exact same schedule (except for band) as my twin. As if I didn't see him enough. Most of my classes are science classes, but they'll be pointless or repeats of things I already know. What a waste of money and time. I'm getting a little scared. Apparently, veterinarians are 4 times as likely to commit suicide as the general population. If I'm this depressed now, what will the future be like...So if the world were to end tomorrow, would it really be that bad...?

Apparently, veterinarians are 4 times as likely to commit suicide as the general population. If I'm this depressed now, what will the future be like...So if the world were to end tomorrow, would it really be that bad...?
Bucket List Meme
Posted 13 years agoIt’s the middle of November, and you all know what that means! That’s right! Only one more month before the world ends. THIS TIME it’s because the Mayan calendar ends, and this somehow predicts the end times. Even though they didn’t account for leap days, and the world should’ve ended in October. But I digress. In honor of only one month of life left before we’re all pushin’ up daisies, let’s hear what you want to do before you kick the bucket! Feel free to include anything you’ve accomplished! Just an update
Posted 13 years agoJust finished up the marching band season this morning! It was an OK year, not terribly fun, though the weather was very nice to us. Only 2 days it rained during rehersal, and one of those was during band camp. If I can find some good videos are our performances, I'll post them. Since the season is over, we won't have rehersal. So goodbye exercise, hello 6 more hours a week!
I'm slowly muddling through my story for the contest
wolfrider is hosting. I might schedule the former marching time as writing time. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it.
Move over Avengers! Saw 'Wreck-It Ralph' last night, and it is definitely one of my favorites! It was funny, had a lot of video game references (duh), and connects on an emotional level. They don't make movies like this anymore...

Contest is a go!
Posted 13 years agoOne Time at Band Camp...
Posted 13 years agoI got a ridiculous sunburn everywhere that my sax neckstrap didn't cover, so I have a nice white V on my chest XD Just finished up my week long marching band camp, and I'm very tired and my face and nose are peeling, since I don't use any sunscreen or block. This year, the band has around 157 members, a lot more than last years 125 or so. Just the saxophone section grew from 16 to 28! We marched against the heat, the rain, and the ever present onslaught of exhaustion. Every night a section would introduce themselves, saying their name, major, hometown, and an interesting fact. Some people had some really cool stories, and our motto became shouting "Show us!". There are a lot of interesting people in band, from webbed toes to ridiculous noises, to crazy toungue rolling, to being 6' 9" tall. Many in the band were very strong competitors in track events. To quote my conductor, "Not only are we a huge band, we can probably kick a lot of other bands' butts"
This year, our first theme is 2012, where we kinda make fun of the whole end of the world theory. Our songs are "Lullaby" (a soft, peaceful song) that leads directly into "Psycho (Prelude)" (a fast, sporadic, awesome song). Then "It's the End of the World As We Know It" (we'll be singing/shouting a verse!). Then "Thriller" (we get to do some of the dance :D) Then "Mars: The Bringer of War" (a very powerful, intense song. The second shows theme is Dancing 'Til the End of the World. We'll be playing "Dancing Machine", "Disco Inferno", "Thriller" (again :D), and "Safety Dance". These songs are a lot trickier musically, but I'm sure it'll work out.
I'm enrolled in 18 credits this semester. Should be a pretty good semester, most of my classes are relevant for my major. I'll also be in Swing Dance Club and Pre-Vet Club. My classes are:
Basic Drawing
Marching Band
Symphony Band
BioQuest (a BS class that's for bio majors that don't know what they want to do)
Cell Biology
Genetics
Organic Chemistry (with a teacher with a heavy accent and that can't teach XO)
Got a bit of work done on my first story, though not nearly as much as I had hoped over the summer. I do have a few days before school begins, so I'm hoping I can get a little more done. I'll be commissioning
sketchpadman soon for a ref sheet or two. Now I'm just going to go to the end of band camp party, and hide indoors for a few days. Once this sunburn goes away, I'll have the sexiest tan around XD
