Dog Days of Summer
Posted 13 years agoMy summer is over, and I'm off to marching band camp. The summer was pretty good. Saw some really neat surgeries while job shadowing my vets, including a cat eye removal, ACL repair, and toe amputation, plus a massive tumor removal that had to have been bigger than my heart! I didn't do as much shadowing as I would have liked to because I got a job at the dog boarding/daycare facilities right next to the clinic :) It was a pretty easy job, but of course some of the dogs were annoying, misbehaving, or humped everything. Among my top favorites were:
Lizzie: a female border collie mix that rarely got in trouble, and liked me!
Toby: a male Shetland Sheepdog that just walked around the yard quietly, bouncing from person to person. Also, when he drank out of a bowl, he looked like he was humping. It was adorable!
Scamp: a male sheltie/collie mix that stayed out of trouble and loved to cuddle :)
Jill: a pretty female brown and tan setter mix. She was always happy just wanted to play, despite almost every male dog trying to hump her (we think something went wrong when she was spayed).
Nick: an English setter that stayed out of trouble by running around the pond when he was outside, or gently cuddling up to you when inside.
Izzie: a golden/border mix. She has the bluest eyes ever, and she never got in trouble, except when she was humping one other dog. Her face looked ridiculous when she did, though. (She, as well as a husky/shep mix named Grizzley, were the inspiration for my character Truthsayer's appearance).
If I wasn't working, I was working on my story, playing with my whippet Sherman (get home from 50 dogs just to play with another =P), or going on 6+ hour Minecraft (4 player on XBox) binges and talking about philosophy with my friends. Gonna miss intelligent conversation when I'm at college...

Favorites Questionnaire
Posted 13 years agoI'm tired of looking at my 'One Year Down' journal, so I'll do a questionnaire about some of my favorite (and least favorite) things. Feel free to mention some of your favorite things :)
Food: Hashbrowns
(Least: bananas, chocolate, ice cream)
Beverage: Whole Milk (Wisonsin!)
Word: Trabajaba (a conjugation of the Spanish trabajar, means "was working")
Smell: The smell after it rains, fresh cut grass, or spaghetti sauce :3
(Least: Hair spray XP)
Greek mythological character: Cerberus
Age: Can't beat the innocence of being a little kid
Sport to watch: Football or golf
Sport to play: Ultimate Frisbee with my friends
Time of Day (ie morning, afternoon, night, late night): Morning
Part of the Day: Going to sleep
Meme: Either Overworked Veterinary Student or Success Kid
Subject when you were in school: Biology, duh =P
(Least: English, it's not terribly practical in the real world)
Instrument: Hard to pick, but oboes have an unique sound
Song: (This list would go on forever if I had movie or video game songs, so I'll ignore them, and just say my top 5 on any given day); Beyond the Sea (Bobby Darin), Sing, Sing, Sing with a Swing (Benny Goodman and his Orchestra), Somebody to Love (Queen), Fall Back Down (Rancid), Save the Last Dance for Me (Michael Buble)
Saying: The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has a limit.
Pick-up line: either "I'm like a rubix cube. The more you touch me the harder I get." or "Are you free tonight, or do I have to pay?" XD
Animal: Collies!!! <3
Plant: Rafflesia (It has no chlorophyll, no stems, roots, or leaves, and is parasitic. Pretty darn cool)
Weather: So windy you can lean against it, or light rain
Constellation: Draco (interesting lore, and it wraps around Polaris, the North Star)
Sense: Smell (too bad mine is awful X0)
Physiological Disease: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (muscle turns into bone)
Psychological Disease: Dissociative Fugue (type of amnesia in which a person wakes up with no memory of his/her identity, and he/she moves to a different city/state, etc and starts a new life)
Superpower: Time control, plant control, electricity, ice, speed, luck
Environment (ie city, country, forest, rainforest, desert, mountains, etc): Temperate forest
Activity: Talking about consciousness, the afterlife, and random topics with my friends :3
Memory: When I was a little kid, my dad, brother, best friend and I drove down to Florida to visit my grandparents. We took a mini-van and put a small TV in it and watched the movie George of the Jungle on the drive down. We got to the subdivision late at night, and I woke up my friend and brother so we could watch a fox eat fallen fruit. Then when we got to my gp's house it was off to bed, but not before doing a quick check-up on Pokemon Yellow. We evolved a Magikarp into a Gyrados, the giant sea monster (AW YEAH!). The next morning we climbed in some orange trees, and my gp's made pancakes! My friend ate 14 pancakes, my brother ate 13, and I ate 12. And these were little pancakes either! These were pretty good sized. The last thing I remember about the trip was being minutes away from getting home, very early in the morning. Across the sod fields were some very cool storm clouds that just left you in awe. The only thing that could make that trip better was LEGOs!

PS: I got another 4.000 GPA second semester :D

One Year Down...
Posted 13 years agoSeven more to go. No one said being a vet would be easy =P. I just finished my last exam for my first year of college. Even now I am enjoying a piece of celebratory rum cake Overall, it went well. I started the year with 21 credits, 18 from AP classes in high school, and 3 from testing out of a comp class. First semester, I got a 4.000 GPA (happy dance). Not sure about second semester yet, but probably not as high (effin’ Social Issues >:[ For once, an English class didn’t completely suck. I got to do a 9 page paper on why Batman is a better superhero than Superman XD.
Marching band was a lot of fun (and work). The first show we did was a rock themed show, playing Touch Me, Elanor Rigby, Fire, and Whiter Shade of Pale. Lots of jokes followed, like “Okay, first we’ll play Fire, then Elanor Rigby, then touch me, then we’ll play Touch Me XD Instead of marching onto the field, that band stood at attention on the far side line. When the signal was given, we stormed the field, running around and having fun doing cartwheels, air planing, forming kick lines and cha-cha lines, and screaming. When the warning whistle blew, we found our positions and came to attention. It’s really cool! The second show was a tribute to the Beatles. We played Penny Lane, Elanor Rigby, I Saw Her Standing There, and Hey Jude. Penny Lanewas very fun because at the climax of the song the whole band formed a kick line and kept playing :D For Hey Jude, a select few who proved their gymnastic ability were chosen to run out of formation, jump into the stands, and encourage the audience to sing along. I (a short shrimp of a kid) was one of these people \(^_^)/. Too bad I can’t sing XD I’ve persuaded the girl I have a wee bit of a crush on to join marching band next year (she plays alto sax too, so we’ll be in the same section), so I’m looking forward to band camp in August. Symphony Band was fun, too. Both semesters we had some really cool songs: Africa; Song, Ceremony, and Ritual, Charleston Capers (epic xylophone!), Riffs (intense, difficult jazz song with a 2 minute drum solo), Winter Dances (January is saweet!), Puszta (Gypsy Dances), Valdres, and Vesuvius (one of the coolest songs EVER!)
In terms of clubs, I did a couple. Friday Night Club is a club that has a certain event almost every Friday night. I did a few of these, the most fun one being playing Ghost in the Graveyard in our campus’ cemetery. (That’s right, we have a cemetery B-) Also, I joined the Pre-vet club. It was interesting, because a local vet would come out and give us a scenario, and the pre-vet students would say (guess) what to do next. Plus, I got to stick my arm up a cow’s butt. It was delightfully warm (it was COLD outside), but I almost lost my glove a couple of times XD The other club I regularly went to was the Swing Dance Club. I’ve been there quite a bit, and I’m learning, but I still suck. Swinging is a lot of fun, and anyone in the BOS group knows how big a fan I am I might take some lessons over the summer. My sister is getting married in September, and wants me to teach her some moves, so I gotta/wanna get better.
I’ve been planning to enroll in a study abroad program. As of now, I’m looking at going to AUT in Aukland, New Zealand, on a study-internship combo. Basically, interviews with some companies (most likely vets) are scheduled. If they want me, I have an internship, and take 2 classes at the university. If no one wants me, I fall back on taking 4 classes at the university. I would be going my first semester (their second semester), leaving early June next year, and getting back just before Thanksgiving. I’m as far as I can be in terms of planning. All that’s left is to make some moolah. I don’t have to tell that going to college in a country on the other side of the world is expensive =P I’m really hoping I can go; I want to see if NZ is a plausible place to live as an adult (gotta get out of this country!), might visit Australia, it’s fantastic on a resume, especially for vet school, and there are collies everywhere <3
On to furry stuffs. I’ve been with the BOS/Superhero group for about a year now, and I’m having fun. I’m in the group chat nearly every night, though that will probably change when I’m back home I've been making friends with the regulars:
MojoRover,
Sketchpadman,
jrcarter,
Wolfrider, and
radarnocturn (or at least I think so) So far, I’ve got 3 characters down, and 30+ story ideas with just those few (some are almost completely planned out, just got to get there in the storyline). The first ones are going to be very slow, because I’m creating my own city and every character in it. I just want the first one to be done. It’s not very important, except for introducing everything. Mainly, I haven’t had the time to work on it much, and I’ve been very stuck on names for some heroes I have in the works, and I want to get more minor characters, and…other excuses.
My schedule for the summer is going to involve finding a job (possibly with a dog boarding kennel), job shadowing vets, playing with my whippet Sherman, hanging with friends, and hopefully getting at least that first story done. Because I’m trying to save money so I can try to study abroad and I’ll be $150,000 in debt after vet school, I might not commission anything for a while XD Although, if I get a decent paying job, I might put some aside for commissions. It’s surprisingly easy to think of artwork ideas for Collie Flower
Well, that wraps up my last year. Sorry for boring you =P

My first two characters
Posted 14 years agoI'm currently working on my first two superheroes, Justin Time and Collie Flower. Naturally, I've hit a few snags and cannot decide on a few things, though I do have them narrowed down to a couple scenarios. If you have any comments, ideas, critiques, etc, please don't hold back.
First: How Justin Time met his wife Jenny. Time, when seeing her, should end up making a fool of himself. Also, I want them to have met while Justin being a hero.
Scenario 1: Time is helping transport someone to the hospital. Jenny (either an ER doctor or nurse) is one of the first on the case. Time asks her out. She giggles and accepts. (Time makes a fool of himself by getting in the way of people, carts, etc.)
Scenario 2: Time saves the day. Wife is in the gathering crowd. He sees her. (Makes fool of self: Stops talking mid-sentence, stares, stutters, etc). He finds her later and asks her out. She accepts.
Scenario 3: Wife (somehow) accidentally hits Time with her car. She panics, checks if he’s OK. He heals himself. He is dumbstruck when he sees her. He recovers, plays it cool. Says she owes him a date for hitting him. She accepts.
Scenario 4: Time saves her from getting mugged at night. Instant connection.
I'm not the biggest fan of Scenario 4. It's too cliche/Spiderman-like. Of course, these can and will be expanded once the decision is actually made.
Second: How Collie Flower got her powers. (she has plant-based powers, in case it wasn't obvious)
Scenario 1: She works as a botanist. A lab accident gives her the powers (or a mutant creeper vine fuses with her). (I think this is too overused, but also a classic)
Scenario 2: She is a party planner. While planning a party in a research lab, an accident occurs, giving her the powers (or a mutant creeper vine fuses with her). (Adds the twist that she didn't actually work in research.)
Scenario 3: Somehow (either complete randomly or a mysterious stranger gives her), She eats mutated seeds that fuse with her body.
These too can be expanded.
Thirdly: Collie Flower's background
Scenario 1: Was always an attractive girl. Once she got powers, she went about superheroing. Eventually she met Time, and the two became friends.
Scenario 2: Was always an attractive girl, but unlucky in love life. She gets her powers. Unhappily single in her forties. Meets Time, whom she persuades to anti-age her (make her younger). So caught up in her new-found youth that she acts her new age.
Scenario 3: Was a relatively unattractive girl. In her forties, the incident that gave her powers occurred, and she also became very attractive. She superheroes, eventually meeting Time, whom she persuades to anti-age her (make her younger). She becomes excited in her youth and acts her new age, doing all the things she missed out on.
These can be expanded as well.
Lastly, what is probably tripping me up the most is Collie Flower's costume. There are just too many things to do. Here is a massive list of possible pieces of her costume. Vote for your favorite stuff, mix and match, go wild.
•General: turn fur green (if you're wondering how, she covers herself in a thin layer of plant cells, which, with their chloroplasts, make her appear green)
•Hair:
o Decorated with one large flower (changes color based on mood)
o Hair is replaced with thin vines
o Covered in small flowers
o Just green hair
o Hair is replaced with leaves
•Body:
o Leotard
o Leotard made of leaves
o Leotard made of flowers
o Dress made of leaves
o Dress made of flowers
o Dress made of flower petals
o Hula dancer costume-like: coconut/melon bra, palm leaf skirt
•Footwear:
o Barefoot (she's not a hippie)
o Shoes, boots, sandals, high-heels
o Boots like roots (see Plant Sims)
•Mask:
o Mask
o No mask
o Flower mask (perhaps white to accent vibrant green eyes)
•Miscellaneous:
o Skinny ivy vines along her limbs and body
o Gloves
o Belt
o Seedbag
o Decorate in Flowers
o Scarf of some sort
If you have questions or comments about anything, don't hesitate. I do have Time's costume already.
Have a good day.
