Hey friends — In light of recent events I wanted to put a few thoughts out before December and the holidays roll around.

Well … what a week, huh? It's really hard to put into concise words the level of disappointment, frustration, anxiety, depression, and injustice I'm feeling right now, and I'm sure plenty of you share those feelings. It's hard to see how there won't be a lot of unnecessary, irreparable harm and damage done, or how long the effects will last. But, this is where we are, and we have to deal with the situations.

So, first of all, I'll be doing what I can to help mitigate harm. Times are tough but I'll be donating what I can to legal advocates like the ACLU and the SPLC, groups that support LGBTQ, BIPOC, immigrant, and other vulnerable communities, and whatever still-reliable news organizations I can find. I'll also be trying to support and network with whatever communities I can, locally and in our fandom. We can and must help each other.

Secondly, it's challenging to push through and get work done, but I'll be doing my best to continue to create art, championing kindness, diversity, and love. If I can make people smile for a moment of their day … if I can maybe open people's minds or change their hearts just a tiny bit … if I can send a message to someone feeling alone and helpless in their community that, hey, they're not alone and it's okay to be different … I'll consider that the noblest effort that I'm capable of with what few talents and skills I have.

Thirdly, I'll be contacting my doctor to see about possibly getting back into seeing a therapist and/or mood medications again. If you feel like you need it (and, yeah, have the means, unfortunately), don't be afraid to reach out for mental health assistance or, worst case, keep the number of a reputable suicide hotline handy. It may be a difficult time ahead but it would be immeasurably darker without you.

And finally—a plea. These will be difficult times, so I hope you'll be able to do what you can to support each other and the causes that you care about. But also, if you've got any means remaining and want to help me continue my work, as an independent artist facing uncertainty, I'd really appreciate any support you can give. Whoah, what a rush! Anthrocon was huge this year, and I kept very busy and did pretty well there.

I mentioned this on cohost and Mastodon over the past few days, and figured I'd let folks here know too.

I'm gonna be extracting myself from Twitter over the next few weeks. There's too much insecurity and instability there with the new god-king in charge, heaped on top of other problems that had already been rampant. Plus it's still hard to get over how they've mistreated my boyf over the past year with their ridiculous systems and useless support.

As an indie creator, it'll hurt to lose my audience there, and I'll miss some of the community we'd carved out in that space. But it's also becoming clear I can't depend on that service going forward, and I don't want to rely on it as a crutch. I can't afford to passively wait and see what happens.

You're probably already following me here, so that's cool. :) I'm gonna try to be a bit more active here going forward. I'll also be exploring other new and revived communities, such as Mastodon, Tumblr, cohost, Itaku -- who knows which will be well-managed and which people will flock to, but I'll keep an eye on them all and try go be where the people are. Hey folks!

I'm sure you've heard by now that FC has been cancelled. It's unfortunate but understandable (and I feel for what con staff has been through the past few weeks trying to juggle impossible decisions), but in the long run I'm not too shook up about it … The boyfriend has been dealing with some medical issues this past month and I likely would not have travelled to the con anyway since I'd rather be here with him until everything is resolved.

In the meantime it's been a challenge keeping up with work, but I'm pressing on! So I'd give a quick status update for what I'm working on:

- Most of the FC badge preorders were done and mailed out; I have a couple leftovers plus a handful of mail-order badges in the queue I'll be working on and sending out through January.

- I also have a few MFF sketches I had to take home early because of the medical situation, then promptly got wrapped up dealing with things. I'll be getting those done through January as well.

- There are a few projects on my list I need to wrap up, including a few book illustrations, a logo design and a few other odds and ends for various clients. I'll be getting to those soon as well.

- My Patreon is paused this month because of the backup, but I'll be continuing work on My Bigger Boyfriend and also on the Zephyrus Coyena/Beef Stroganov comic, Small Business Growth!, that I've been working on there. I'll make another announcement when things start up again by February but feel free to check it out in the meantime if you'd like or feel like joining in and tossing a little support my way: https://www.patreon.com/cooner

And that's it for now! I've got other stuff planned for later this year but for the moment I'm mostly trying to get caught up on all this stuff.
