while DA hates phones so I really couldnt access notes, and responding to messages was a guessing game if it would actually send or not. so pretty much just was ghosting when I had time

I moved at the very first of august in Lubbock, TX from Amarillo. so moving from my apt to a house with my boyfriend and shifting everything over was quite fun and all....so much adulting and all and having things todo before Trace had started school at Tech on the 24th, with no internet....with a sole internet class was a headache
along with earlier Texas floodings where my family and friends lived with helping them out, and other issues that had happened earlier in the year.

then some issues with the dogs where there was a 'miscommunication' and I wasnt allowed to have my dogs yet we had at the very beginning said we had dogs
so had to drop them off with my parents and just other things, we didnt want to unpack fully incase we had to move again, so after several weeks i said screw it and I HAD to mount something
so that was the quickest fox I had ever mounted I swear
then it just sorta went from there, while we finally got the OK with the dogs

I wanted to do a couple mounts to warm up, that were my own before I tackled commissioners to ensure I still had the touch haha
so please dont worry I haven't forgotten about any of you, this year has just been tons more busier than I had thought it would be...didnt even know id be moving in with my boyfriend or other milestones....that was quite a huge jump plus with adulting

well, I have been working at Wild West Taxidermy Studio for a week now.

things are going pretty good, boss is taking a week to head back down to our teachers habitat course.
he comes back, and we get 10 deer ready for the Texas big game banquet? or something I wanna say.

first day, of testing me out, turned and split 3 bobcats, 3 mule deers. nothing to it.
got them fleshed with his new hide master he had finished making, he was pretty impressed I have to say when i turned them quicker and more thorough then he was.
so told me, "ill see you on Monday and get you started on some things, if you want to, bring a raw animal and ill tan it for free"
I bought a red marble fox i had missed in my freezer when I was doing inventory.
and we was working on tuesday just cleaning some things up, cause he forgot to pull out the bobcat i was to work on and the elk cape he was going to mount. and we rehydrated 4 large elk back hides, 1 half back elk, 1 half back red stag, 2 deer half back halves, got them tumbled and stretched.
so Wednesday started working on prepping the bobcat ( first bobcat I've ever done )skin and form getting that worked up, doing the leaping pose which i never have liked but eh, customers choice and one of the larger ones it would fit the bobcat
same with Thursday, then some tweeking on Friday with preparing the shop of cleaning and organizing some for his absence.
but found out that 2 more guys will be coming on first in may, one 18, one 22 before they got to the taxidermy school in June and September.
with me just kinda calling him and showing him, saying if only he had 5 of me thats all wed need.
boss wants me to show them how to skin properly, turn and have them shadow him on a deer shoulder, and me a lifesize, he plans on having me do a grey fox for them to which which is pretty cool.
though he said yes on shadowing but hes mainly hiring them for deer and tannery since he was running it all by himself with his wife helping a little bit.

in payment hes tanning all my skins from now on, which is AWESOME dont have to shell out shipping costs and tannery expense.

K, so ive been tossing this in my head for a long while now and felt like asking tumblr of just exactly what they would do? I have asked my close friends of this ordeal, and I just keep tossing it in my head.

name and item have been kept quiet because i am just getting opinions now.

~ story time~

I was interested in an item that had been listed up on a website for some time period, and had messaged them at the early part of July asking for better pictures because I wanted to bring it along to this convention with me at the end of October, which I had told them since If i were to buy it, that would be its main reason to use it for that said convention, since I dont have any other place to use said item.

I thought hey what the hell, go ahead and buy it and it was quite a expensive item ( 650+25 shipping) since I figured it was done anyways.

bought July 15th

the website said it would be shipped off around July- 30th

so no biggy I waited since the person and me is i say pretty good friends and thought nothing of it when that came about.

August came by and realized they had been busy with things they had been really interested in and didn’t have any time to do any work on any items. so just waited around expecting it, so September comes and gone

So end of september came about and I got wind they were leaving for about 2 weeks and asked about the item I had bought from them, saying you knew I needed this item by this certain time period, and I asked what was keeping it and said they needed to put something on it to make it more easy to wear, which I offered I could of done it if they were strapped for time, said they would try to get it before they left.

So I waited last week and first of this week expecting it possibly today…nothing. since they are gone, and have tried communicating to them but have been left unanswered even on just small chit chat.

So, do you find it fair to ask for a full refund of the said person when they knew I needed it by a certain time, and has pushed out 2 premade items when they had commissions to do, for things that have already been paid for. For not only myself but for other people. When I’ve letted it slide since I knew they were at things they enjoyed and didn’t want to be those kind of bad commissioners that are up your ass 24/7 asking if ” its done? is it done? can i see? whens it getting shipped?”

I should be getting back all my pelts from the tannery in October as well, if everything goes as planned, I might tell them to hold it for abit for me to get back into Amarillo, since around that time they are finishing, I will be in TN

Working on 2 foxes right now, that I will post once finished, pretty happy with the end result of one, still shaving a ass tone on the other before i work on mounting up.

Need to get out the dog, fox kit and fawn from the freezer to work on getting them turned and salted and ready to go with some others to the tannery.

So why not make a new journal while im cleaning the apt.
and debating if i want to take pictures of everything that isn't frozen.

some of these i wont be able to get pictures of like the mounts....i might there is a tree out there but to be hanging random deer heads out there when people are passing by makes me uneasy.

>How are you able get so many Pelts?
I am comfortable; though the years I have had many people always asking this and I always find it literally rude for this question too.
Maybe my parents just taught me not to ask people what they make or their yearly salary.
Or people who try to rub their money within your face.

with working as a part time cashier, I often get this by older women or men. which is quite insulting in general.
to say simply I am fortunate and live a comfortable lifestyle.

>Where do you get them?
I get them from hunters and trappers as well as breeders for ranched animals
But I have been known to pick up things along side the road, I don't like to waste things when I don't have to.
within taxidermy school I was known as the scavenger because I always asked for the skulls or backhides and claws for when we was doing the shoulder mounts, or skinning for lifesize.

>how are they killed?
each trapper has their own way of dispatching
usually I know they use the catch pole, the needle method, gun shot and with my breeders they use the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide method to ensure a quick and easy death.

I try not to get any that had their skull bashed, aside from being a skull collector.

>Will you tell me your breeders?
Nope, unless you are a really good friend, and a friend I know I can actually trust.
It took me a long while to find my breeders and I'm not one for telling where I get my sources.

>Why do you name them?
I like naming them, I don't know have always named things from stuffed animals, to even inanimate objects; I mean I even put a pink sticky note over the toaster named Jenny hahaha ( SPG)
I just find I connect more better with them if they got a name.
If I've made a character from them, then I will literally never ever sell them since they are apart of my mind children now.

>Self taught or school?
I learned about taxidermy as a young age, and skinned a few things before usually a fox or some coyotes a few years before going into school in the fall of '10

>What type of taxidermy do you prefer?
traditional hands down, yes I did support plushies when they were first were getting big, even had the 3rd plush on dA but within the 5 years from it to now, I have grown to like them less and less, more so with the people and fad itself. I don't dislike persay plushies as themselves I mean I still even have one, and like seeing well made ones.

I also love rogue taxidermy too though, avid fan of that and what animals could be created with other different parts of the animal.

>Do you support poachers or game hunters?
I don't support poachers at all, thats just wrong and to take an animal that is protected or out of season just to sell or have for themselves, I find very wrong in my eyes as well as like to keep things legal.

Game hunters, I find it a waste of them just getting it as a trophy, and not using the meat or rest of the hide, but if you going to have your name out there and a actual taxidermist and getting your name out there, you will run into these kinds of people.
Just hope they bring you the whole animal so you can get the rest for yourself haha, or hope the meat has gone to villages if in Africa or something.

>Why don't you make plushies?
As said before I just don't find them my type, and would really like people to get into trad. as well instead of just spazzing at seeing a plushy and only wanting them.
granted I know sometimes space is an issue, I am living in a one bedroom apt. I know space is hard.
But I really only see people try to do plushies to make a quick buck and get a quick business going and then flopping belly up usually with trying to do it as cheap as possible and not even having all the supplies yet. I just don't have the desire to start a job yet, aside from the taxes, and getting a business licensee even with TX not needing a taxidermy license, if you start up a business then you need one.

>Will you be doing any Commissions in the future?
I probably won't here.
Personally with just how seeing the new generation trade mounts and sell them like they are Pokemon cards. I don't feel the need to sell them.
Or they rehydrate them to mount them, themselves, which is another fear of mine for my mounts.
Unless I feel the person I sell them to will take care of it or my friends.

>Will you sell any mountable pelts to me?
Probably not, If I bought mountable skins they are usually for myself and my personal collection.
I have sold off my wall-hangers though, which some people are claiming them as mountable, which they clearly arn't. I know what is and isn't mountable, I am not dumb, but with people trying to call it mountable to sell it for higher, what ever its their problem if it falls apart or looks like its been to hell and back.
But whatever, DA really has lost the meaning of 'whats mountable' and are just trying to get into the fad of plushing literally everything they can get their hands on still. sad but true.

>What supplies do you use?
I use the basic, mainly Mckenzie with forms, I have really gotten spoiled on Dennis eyes so I would either use him or Tohickon eyes then just spider wire, leather needle, hide paste, clay.

>Do you tan things yourself?
I've done it before, Ive used Rittelz and Mckenzie brush on tan.
But now i find it just easier to send it off to a tannery. Less mess.

>When do you plan on becoming a fox farmer?
After I get settled and see which state I want to start my fox farm, I dont gather it will be another 10 years I am sure until I finish school and get set off right to ensure the welfare of the animals will be good.

>Are you going to school now?
I am currently going to school to be a Mortician/Embalmer for the state of Texas
I would also like to take some classes with business as well as speech and drama.

>Are you going to become a licensed taxidermist?
Some time down the road when I am able to accept more work, and an actual home or business place.
I would feel more comfortable having an actual place to run my business from, so probably not for another 5 or so years and then I will probably just remain part time and do it on the side from my actual job as a Mortician until I get tired from that job.
