ANTHROCON 2015 FLOOR WARS PARTNERS
it has come to my attention that finding partners for floor wars has been a somewhat difficult chore in the fandom. I want to take the time now to try to present an idea and use this specific FA journal as a means of people to find a floor wars partner.
Floor wars is 2 vs 2 non suit (16 teams) and 2 vs 2 fursuit (8 teams)
COMMENT BELLOW YOUR

Division you plan on entering:

______________________
I would prefer if you guys use the note system on FA to message each other if possible. I hope that this works out and please help spread this around so people can find partners. I hope that this makes things easier, if it is a success then we will implement this in the future as well. FWA Floor Wars SIGN UPS TONIGHT

Posted 11 years agoIT'S YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD DOGZU,
smilingsammi coming at you with your videos and lessons of this week!
Sorry we've been away, there's been a lot going on in all of our lives as of recent! Videos/lessons may be updated at different times now, but we'll see!
Without further a due, here are the videos. Today we are focusing on contrast in movement.
Contrast is what makes our movement feel richer and look more appealing. If we have a sharp movement contrasted with a smooth movement, it makes the moves look that much sharper and smoother. Same principle goes with slow and fast. Your fast movements can only be fast based on your slow movements otherwise it digresses into sameness.

Posted 11 years agoHello, This is Remix
the_remix and I am a new admin for the Dancer Furs page. I discovered the fandom about 4-5 years ago and was instantly drawn to fursuiting and the dance competitions. Eventually I started to learn how to dance and now i have been dancing for almost 4 years now. I want to dedicate my life to dancing and become one of the worlds greatest teachers. I hope i can help those in the fandom who are dancers or those aspiring to learn =). Now... onto the topic.
Originality [uh-rij-uh-nal-i-tee]
- noun
the quality or state of being original
ability to think or express oneself in an independent and individual manner; creative ability.
freshness or novelty, as of an idea, method, or performance
4 main components of Originality ( Terms taken from the F.A.T.E.S. judging system)
1. Character
A character or personality that is your own.
2. Style
A style can become individual through uniqueness/choice in steps, even if a Dancer's character or moves are generic and/or universal.
3. Technique
A technique (move) can be unique if it is done in a fresh/never seen before way, even if a Dancer's character or style is generic and/or basic.
4. Concepts
New possible concepts are infinite because the combination of possible existing moves and styles is infinite. Concepts, at their most basic level, tell 'stories.' This is usually done in two ways:
(These example refer to breakdancing but can be interpreted with any style)
1. Telling a story through action.
e.g. A burn where the opponent's stomach is 'cut' open and his/her intestines are 'pulled' out, which are then used as a rope to 'lasso' his/her partner during a commando.
2. A series of moves/steps/styles that show a repeated pattern.
e.g. A B-Boy/B-Girl brushes off his/her foot in footwork, then brushes off his/her foot in powermoves, then goes into a freeze and then brushes off his/her foot.
Thank you for taking your time out and reading this and there is also another journal by
skyryd3r that i hope really encourages you in those times of doubt. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5629583/

I hope i can help those in the fandom who are dancers or those aspiring to learn =). Now... onto the topic. What is "biting" ?Biting is basically copying or stealing another person's dance moves, set, or styleBiting is looked upon as negative and shameful but i do believe that biting has a small beneficial/positive side as well.I will first go into the only positive aspect of biting. There is a saying "If you don't bite, you can't eat". When people first discover dancing and get into it, there is an early stage where you are entering this brand new world and are hugely inspired by certain dancers you have seen on YouTube or in person. For example. You see the Les Twins dancing for your first time, you become absolutely infatuated with their style and movement and say to yourself "I want to be able to dance like that someday, what they do is so amazing" They are now a huge inspiration in your dancing. The next thing new dancers usually do is imitate the dance moves that the Les Twins are doing probably unaware that the Les Twins have worked years trying to develop their own style and personal moves. What the dancer is unknowingly doing is stealing and copying those dance moves. It's okay, we all make this mistake in the beginning or at some point but this is generally how you get your feet wet in the dance world. I don't encourage biting but when we start dancing its just something we might do. Eventually you come to a point where you start learning about foundations of dance styles, and your world and knowledge is expanded. You no longer see just the Les Twins, You see multiple dancers that you look up to, you see different styles, you see how each dancer has personalized their moves. Dance is an art and we all should strive to create our own personal art style. The only positive about "biting" is that it allows you to become more involved in the dance world. I'm sure at one point in an artists life they have traced something because they really wanted to draw a picture like that but eventually that artist learned the foundations of art styles and then went off to create their own unique style. The rest of biting is negative.Copying another dancers set or routine or a signature move is not good. At all. Copying someone else's move or style and claiming it as your own is pretty much plagiarism. When you have been dancing enough to get started you should not be copying anyone else anymore, trust me its so much funner and you feel so much more accomplished when you create your own moves and style."Also there are many signature moves people create. Routines too. When others duplicate that its also seen as biting. I agree. Nothing wrong to learn them, you might see something you like so you learn it, but before you enter a contest/circle/battle/ and do it, make sure you learned it so you can create your own twist to it, and I don't mean "he did it with the left and do it with the right arm", hehe, I mean really put
your own feel, character, etc on it. Change it up and switch it around, find other transitions from it, you will be surprised how different it will end up looking. You now didnt bite, you only used it for INSPIRATION." - Wave-o-matic"Biting can also be attributed to styles, not just set of moves. If someone comes out and dances exaclty like another dancer, same fell, same character, same look, etc, they might not be biting moves per say, but they are mimicking other attributes that make up a dancer. These are cats that don't need to be fed anymore, but still like to eat off others plates. Now there is a thin line there. Some might really look up to an approach someone does, feels it so much they find themselves in that style, that feel, it becomes natural." - wave-o-matic"Many dancers teach their moves/styles/approaches to their students, friends, etc, and they give them their moves. This is not biting, but the artform being passed down. I have seen other call cats biters only later to find out their teacher taught them that and gave them that move. It's when you take whats not yours, then act like it is when biting is the most unforgiving." - wave-o-matic (like how i gave credit back to the person who wrote that? :p )Foundations of dance:The foundations of dance are like the foundations of a house, they are the base, the beginning, the start. Each style has its own foundational moves and fundamentals, for example in the Popping dance style the foundational moves are the fresno, boppin', hitting, arm waves, robot etc... Foundational moves cannot be bitten as they are meant for everyone, they are the core of a certain style or other advanced moves. (You gotta start somewhere right?)Originality [uh-rij-uh-nal-i-tee]
- noun
the quality or state of being original
ability to think or express oneself in an independent and individual manner; creative ability.
freshness or novelty, as of an idea, method, or performance
4 main components of Originality ( Terms taken from the F.A.T.E.S. judging system)
1. Character
A character or personality that is your own.
2. Style
A style can become individual through uniqueness/choice in steps, even if a Dancer's character or moves are generic and/or universal.
3. Technique
A technique (move) can be unique if it is done in a fresh/never seen before way, even if a Dancer's character or style is generic and/or basic.

New possible concepts are infinite because the combination of possible existing moves and styles is infinite. Concepts, at their most basic level, tell 'stories.' This is usually done in two ways:

1. Telling a story through action.

e.g. A B-Boy/B-Girl brushes off his/her foot in footwork, then brushes off his/her foot in powermoves, then goes into a freeze and then brushes off his/her foot.
NOTES:Being creative and original does not necessarily mean that you have foundation or universal moves.
Having foundation or universal moves does not necessarily mean that you have creativity or originality.MORE NOTES:Listening to music and daydreaming:A good way to come up with some creative moves and style is to listen to music and daydream. Imagine yourself doing things that you never thought you could do, imagine yourself battling in international competitions or even dancing at a convention, then transfer those thoughts to reality the best you can. I listen to music and daydream almost every day and it really opens up a lot of possibilities for my dancing. (You can always find some downtime in your day and take advantage of waiting times etc. to just listen to music and daydream)Excessively watching dancers:We all have our favorite dancers but watching them too much can cause us to really want to be like them and then we unknowingly begin to imitate their style and moves. Try laying off watching your favorite dancer too much and really focus on yourself.Similar Creativity:Dance is an art and artists can come to the same creativity. If you truly know you are the one who created that move, then you ARE the one who created that move, that does not mean the other person is copying you and that does not mean you are copying them. This happens much more often than you think. Regardless of creating the same move you two should have different styles of dance and different transitions so the move is actually not the "same" but similar. The main importance of this journal is to inform you about what biting is, the do's and dont's, how to create your own moves, and tips and information to further your creativity and knowledge. As an artist you should strive to create your own style and focus on being yourself and expressing yourself. That is what dance is at its root, expression."With dance or any art form, you've got to eventually make it a reflection of who YOU are. Your style, philosophy, and teachings should be coming from your personal beliefs and experiences. Passing along what your mentors taught you 10 years ago does not add to the art, it merely keeps it in a box. Create. Expand. Inspire." - Jardy Santiago And.... Here is an extra video on how to flip a dance move and not bite.Thank you for taking your time out and reading this and there is also another journal by
skyryd3r that i hope really encourages you in those times of doubt. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5629583/Inspirational Quotes
Posted 11 years agoHi friends! I know I said I've been away and busy but I need to post this! This is from my amazing friend,
the_remix who found these amazing quotes.
"Like anything you want to get very good at, practice is essential. A good start is too practice your basic moves, get them down, but not just by doing the moves, always practice them on the music. At least 30 minutes a day, make sure you practice hitting, dimestops, basic steps, basic waves, etc.
Also practice just dancing. What I mean is just groove to a beat without thinking of popping, many cats that get into popping never really danced before, so finding that rhythm doesnt come as easy. A great way to do that is just to take steps on the 1 and the 2, get the feel of that.
Once you build a solid foundation, then you can start building your "house" the way you want to. Having the basics is having a stable foundation to build on, having the rhythm allows the tools you use to build your dance to become more efficient. Having a daily practice session makes sure you keep progressing and in turn you start "creating" your approaches and feels.
Welcome the mistakes you make, a lot of things I have come up with are from making mistakes and finding new ways of doing something. If you practice with the idea that there is only ONE right way of doing something, then you will reach a wall if that one way doesnt work for you. Progress gets halted, and many people get frustrated and eventually stop practicing.
Popping is not an exact science, its an ART FORM, so what might work for someone else might not work for you, the best thing to do is find what WORKS FOR YOU and emphasize it. Don't be afraid to try new things, ideas, styles, moves, etc. This is what keeps it FUN.

smilingsammi out.Changes, Updates, Clarification, FC Comp and FE/FWA Info!
Posted 11 years ago
here - Hey guys, I know it's been quite a long time and I've dropped off the map recently but I'm back and going to do my best to stay back and ontop of getting you guys the info you need!
So, to do this there will be a few changes to how I go about things as far as keeping in contact with you guys.
I: Changes to our FA Page
--- I will no longer be following back other accounts, and I'm going to clear this account of everyone it is watching.
The reason behind doing this is so that I don't have to cycle through 5000+ submissions every time I check the page to gather just a couple of pictures related to dance to favorite.
Instead of me doing this, I ask you guys that if you would like to post a picture or submissions with us then use the Pictures/FA Submissions Journal. I will see it on there and favorite it from that. (you will find more info about this in the Updates section)
This way, I can focus more on doing more things with the page itself than spending hours upon end by going through a list of submissions that usually don't have content that we like to favorite so others can see.
---- Our notes system should only be used to give us direct information about cons, and idea for an event you had, or other such things that are different from just 'joining' the page/asking for guidance/etc.
As far as "joining" DancerFurs goes; if you love to dance, are looking to get into it, or really just like going around and having fun dancing. Then you are a DancerFur and this community page is for you. It's not about how many competitions you do, if you have a fursuit, or how skilled you are at the current moment. This page is here for you to use as a tool to get the information you need to grow as a dancer and to communicate with others! I cannot stress that enough!
Once more, the best way to ask for critique/information/help with something is to use our new journal system!
Which you will find info on a bit below in our Updates section!
The links to the styles on the page info is for quick examples of the styles we have found so far to put up for YOU! These links sometimes will of course break and or lead to a deleted video.
BECAUSE OF THIS we are going to attempt to get all of these styles done by different furries and post them on our own YouTube page. This not only shows that everything is possible with enough effort, but it gives us the ability to control the videos ourselves, and take care of the links to make sure they are always available to you!
For now, we'll be choosing people to do this but eventually we'll be opening up sign ups to do them as well!
II: Updates
So we're going to be introducing a few new systems and such as far as how the page works! I'm really excited about this so I'm just gonna go right into it!
--- Firstly! As mentioned before we're going to be using a new way to keep things organized not only for us but for you as well.
Basically how this is going to work is we're going to use journals to make a sort of forum system. There will be different journals that you can post your content in so that it is easily visible to not only us but other dancers you may be seeking help from.
And it works visa versa as well, because everything will be grouped together like this, those of you who are looking to give help and information can easily find people seeking it!
To keep these updated and uncrowded over time, we will be clearing them and making new ones by a period of 6 months. (if it gets to be filled/outdated even faster then we will start clearing them in shorter periods)
We will be making them in these categories for now.
1 - Artwork/Pictures/FA Submissions (mainly used for us to favorite them so they show up on the page and others may see as well)
2 - Videos *SEEKING CRITIQUE* (mainly used only to give/get critique and constructive criticism)
3 - Videos/Requests *SEEKING HELP INFORMATION* (this will be mainly used for a way to get help and not necessarily critique. Mainly for those starting a new style or dancing period)
---- We'll be taking more care of the styles links as mentioned before. Again if you notice something is broken please send us a note with "Broken Link - *Given Style*" In it.
Artists!
If you would like to submit an icon for us to use! Please send us over a note! We used to do a small mini like contest/competition. But it hasn't gotten much use at all. If we do end up using it we'll post it in our submissions page as well and link back to your page so that people know of course it was you!
Depending on how many/how often we receive them, we will be changing it periodically.
III: Clarification on 'DancerFurs' as a group
I would just like to make a point on certain things about "us".
This page was started by
and I to give back to the community and help it grow.
Not to create some type of elitist clique.
Now I'm not getting into anything that has happened recently regarding these situations. I would just like to clarify that we are a family.
And by this, I mean that we are welcoming to all those who want to learn, grow and have fun with us. You should never put down your fellow dancer based on their current skill level, abilities or style.
Being a dancer is more about the love you have for the art and the dedication you have to learning and growing rather than how skilled you are. It's about getting out there and having fun, and loving what you get to share with your other fellow dancers.
So just one more time I would like to say;
If you're looking to come in and learn or talk to any of the "DancerFurs" then by all means just stop by and say, "Hi! I'm looking to learn this or that" or, "I need help with this can you help me understand" or, "Hey I like to dance to, here's a video of me"
Just talk, socialize, meet people.
That's what Blue and I wanted from this. We wanted to help the community build upon itself and bring new people in and show them how much fun it is to learn and grow.
Thank you to those that understand that. To those that don't, please try to!

Dance Videos of the Week and an Important Message
Posted 12 years agoHey friends!
I hope you all have had an amazing new year! Apologies on updates for I was final-ing all of December and late November. Just hit my new semester so I'll be putting more dance videos up until early Feb! =)
Please enjoy these amazing videos. I'm just going to leave these links here. These are some of my very favorites and I hope you enjoy them too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irQJ.....&index=183 <- AMAZING video <333 Beautiful story. Keone and Mari Madrid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGLW.....FABD2D5C2B070F <- Koharu which just makes me shit bricks lol. Look at her subtleties!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LjL.....FABD2D5C2B070F <- Amazing bboy power moves, some of the very best. I want you to know that some of these amazing moves are INVENTED by just dancers. Some of these moves are also creatively enhanced from the original base power moves that everyone knows.
---
Finally my most important video that I think you should all watch, full through. Back in November there were many A DRAMAS regarding about how dancerfurs seem... Elitist.
I would like you to know that this is not the case and purpose of this group. To be a dancerfur isn't a title. This is a community and when you dance and you are a furry, you ARE a dancerfur! There's no test to get in, we are all part of a family.
Family above all else, remember that! Let's keep speaking with movements and change the furry fandom together! In the most positive way we ALL can!
Bboy gravity speaks truths that I full heartily believe applies to many communities, not just the dance one. I highly recommend everyone to watch this video if possible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogjA.....FABD2D5C2B070F
PUT IN THE WORK LIKE YOU PUT IN THE WORK FOR DANCE, BE THE CHANGE.
Happy wonderful January, friends!

Dance Videos of the Week + Small Furfright Update
Posted 12 years agoHey folks! It's been a little while! I've got you some videos of the week! No overall focus this time but some good videos! Here are soma MAH favs! All from the crew known as KubSkoutz! You know, Ian Eastwood, Brian Puspos, Lando, etc.
Hiphop + R+B:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTEW.....&index=144 Ian Eastwood's hiphop choreo to HIT EM UP! (Language: NSFW)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlqq.....FABD2D5C2B070F Another Ian Eastwood. R+B choreo. Check out his sweet play on the lyrics. Sometimes adding that level of complexity is SO, so, SO satisfying to the audience in really immersing them in your world. I.e. Ian licking his jacket in the video.
I think it is so important that as a dancer you become an illustrator of a moment, when you dance, BECOME the creator of that moment. You can really engage your audience.
This video also has story. So does the next one I"m about to post.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vXJ.....FABD2D5C2B070F Brian Puspos' R+B choreo. Has an amazing amount of pauses and go'z, and complexities. (Language: NSFW)
As for posting, sorry I had mid-terms then went straight to FurFright haha! Playing catch up personally.
This year at Furfright, there were some truly spectacular performances out there. There was something me and a few number of friends have seen that we don't commonly see at big cons. Dancing to diff. genres, more performances with audience engagement, mood, theme, it was a great variety at this con!
Here are only some of the amazing performances done at FF!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRI7q8u6CUU - Remix's performance at FF.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfr4PTZ4gho - Rally's performance at FF.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsHnSBTF79Y - Telephone's performance at FF.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvEVM-29rrc - Fenrir's performance at FF.
Thanks for reading folks! Stay bundled and warm! Keep on dancing~

smilingsammi out!DAAANCE Videooos of the Week! Focus: TEXTURE in Dance
Posted 12 years agoFor this journal, I wanted to have a focus on texture in dance. It's one thing to do dance moves but it's another when you speak this language of movement. Stomping your foot on the ground is not the same as tapping your foot lightly giving it a weightless feeling.
The videos I have for you today are hiphop choreography and locking videos!
I feel these are absolute excellent examples of texture in dance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYc.....&index=129 Bam and Koharu do a choreo that is RICH with texture. Look at their soft hits and hard hits to certain beats, listen to the musicality. When someone makes things effortless looking, there is also control and texture. The next time you hear those words, think about how they're doing the moves as opposed to whether or not the moves look cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9T.....FABD2D5C2B070F Once again, rich in texture. Parris Goebel's choreo and the crew. They're so chill and in control of their movements, it's unbelievable... One day, I'd hope to achieve their level, and you should too! But look at their controlled fast movements and soft, slow, careful movements.
This final video I have for you I feel wraps it up in a nice package. P-lock talks about the difference of just doing a move versus having control and musicality with texture. There really is a difference. The details. I advise you all to check this video out even if you aren't feeling it in the first two!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?featu.....;v=UHNszLA3eKg
That's it for this week! Always thrilled to see people comment on these journals and even more happy to see what y'all take out of it! Thank you very much for giving this journal the time of your day! :3

smilingsammi out!Dance Videos of THE MONTH
Posted 12 years agoHey folks,
Been awhile since the journals been updated. Been meaning to get around but ever since school started it's been a little hectic! So to make up for it, I have a collection of dance videos for you from last month and THIS WEEK!
First off, featuring our very own fandom's well-known fursuit dancer
doryuu in his video that he posted in August. If you haven't checked it out, please do so! This is a wonderful example of level change and flow to the tune of the music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lxC.....&index=117
Second, we have a video of Koharu Sugawara. A phenomenal dancer who is able to incorporate sharp hits, soft hits, her dance in this video is rich with texture. More jazzy, hiphop-ish, contemp, hard to really put this under a genre since it has many different elements.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CXK.....&index=118
Third, a REAL treat! Here we have SWING AND TAP +MORE! To the song BANG BANG BAAAAAAANG! One of my very favorites! This video has amazing performance qualities! Devon Perri choreagraphed this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qZ0.....FABD2D5C2B070F
The Rookies are a crew that share a message that I think all dancers should know. The idea of constantly being the student and always learning no matter what level you are at. Pretty inspirational stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zRl.....FABD2D5C2B070F
Vihn Nguyen's r+b choreography feat. other dancers such as Keone Madrid. This choreo is rich with musicality. If you listen carefully they will hit not just obvious beats but subtle sounds and also dance to the lyrics. Texture here is also rich, rich, riiiich.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6UL.....FABD2D5C2B070F
Phillip Chbeeb's latest video. Threads, Isos, illusions with outfit to complement their piece.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGUw.....FABD2D5C2B070F
Performance by Poreotics at World of Dance Houstan 2013!! Fun, fun, watch them kill the beat and use their formations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Rw.....FABD2D5C2B070F
For the krumpers. Keep Dancing Koreo 2010 krumping finals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfgZ.....FABD2D5C2B070F
Last, I think everyone should this video. This is hilarious in the commentary XDDDD, they're either french or japanese, this is just SO hilarious. Found this browsing my homeboy
Doryuu's dance playlist. For the bboys and bgirls.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLJ_.....FABD2D5C2B070F
That's all for this week and last month! Hope you guys enjoy, keep dancing!

First off, featuring our very own fandom's well-known fursuit dancer
doryuu in his video that he posted in August. If you haven't checked it out, please do so! This is a wonderful example of level change and flow to the tune of the music.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lxC.....&index=117
For the bboys and bgirls.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLJ_.....FABD2D5C2B070F
That's all for this week and last month! Hope you guys enjoy, keep dancing!

A video of last years RMFC dance compIII: IFC Dance Competition Set-Up
IFC has been without a dance competition for toooooo long.
So
has promised that one will come in 2014! But only if he receives enough interest and support for it!
So go out and show your interest by
sending him an email at Pandez[at]indyfurcon.com
They're looking for at least 20-25 people willing to compete and they also need judges
(with at least some credentials and knowledge of dance).
So get out there and help us get a dance competition at IFC!
IV: Anthrocon Recap/Wrap-Up
As always, Anthrocon is a humongous venue for us and we are pleased to say
that this was probably one of the best years as pretty much all dance events go.
The dance competition was amazing this year, and seeing a ton of new faces out on that floor was great.
To all those that did and did not make it to the finals, come back next year and show your improvement.
It's so great to see everyone out there killing it and
I can't wait til next year to see even more new faces and skills!
This years winners were:
and
in that order. Congratulations guys! And have fun on the judging table next year Skye xDDDD It's very very difficult!
Skye's First Place PerformanceFloor Wars was of course the best yet (again).
It just continues to surpass itself time and time again. A lot of new talent again hit the floor this time.
And we saw a lot of people come back on to the competitor floor. :P
Big ups to
and
they totally wrecked the competition.
Flinch battling during Floor Wars
Theome battling during Floor Wars The cypher didn't go all to well this year. I need to focus and find a better time as well as get it in the actual con schedule sometime. But thank you to all who came! Hope you enjoyed the small time we had! and big thanks to
for dj'ing it! That's only a small bit of everything as of course there was a shit ton more, but. It's all way too in depth and wayyy too feelsy. We don't want PCD again!
Here are your extra videos for this journal, Enjoy!
A video compilation of this years Urban Dance Showcase. UDC is the largest and most in depth dance camp in the world (for Hip-Hop styles).
An amazing track and an amazing video. Definitely shows emphasis on the lines and forms of shapes created by contemporary.
What is there to say about this other than amazinggggg
Take care everyone! And keep on dancing

The Dancer as a Visual Writer and Illustrator
Posted 12 years agoHey folks! It's
smilingsammi here buried under the rubble known as finals. Sorry I haven't been posting much. School has been absolutely MURDERING me but as summer comes along, I'll be making more time to staying connected to all you homies, dancerfur fam.
To the point: I was browsing videos on utube and came across an old viral sensation by OK GO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTAAsCNK7RA
I remember watching this video a long time ago when I was in early high school and wow-ing at the sense of visual hierarchy and optical illusions. The video was incredibly smart and artistic that played with space and movement. It didn't matter that you couldn't see all of the treadmills, it looked really cool!
We find these elements today in dance choreography. A great example of this is from Academy of Villian's performance at HipHop International.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuIv7NuG0iM
I know I shared this video before but I"m doing it again because it has some amazing elements. What makes this performance so incredible is the fact of how they can illustrate an image to the viewer, something not one person could do on their own with the concepts they are tackling. This is what is so pleasing about their performance, and then at the very end they leave with you, something to associate them and their crew name by. A face, constructed by its dancers.
Using elements of design and color, subtle things like dressing in black with all white gloves or coloring your forearms red while leaving everything black; plays with our eyes. This is where artistic choice on a subtle level comes into play, where you want your viewer to draw attention to.
This, combined with a dance choreography, can make a completely different piece than if you all dressed in casual clothing that were different. This brings control, this brings clarity and unity, and it helps us put together the image.
THIS is also why, when lockers (Locking, a type of dance) wears stripes, it looks great because it also works on an optical illusion level. Rolling their wrists at fast paces while having a checkered outfit shift in space.
As a dancer, you are an illustrator, a traditional artist. Think of yourself as someone who creates images or story to the viewer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl8t.....FABD2D5C2B070F <-Dtrix and Robert's SYTYCD performance.
In contemporary choreo, they stress the importance of having lines and drawing through space. This is also amazing for the emotion and story the two create, their chemistry together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8ZT.....FABD2D5C2B070F
As a dancer you are also a writer, bringing new meaning and light to a song. You interpret music differently than another person does, even doing the exact opposite motion of what the song suggests will shed a new light. You visualize and depict a moment in time, space, feeling and emotion.
So now, every time you dance, try thinking of it not just being about the moves and looking cool, but combining a story to make your viewer feel something. Food for thought! These are where amazing concepts begin, and sometimes emerge into something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PyMXcwY2sY
So that's my little spiel for the moment. Hope you all gained something from it! If there's any amazing videos or dance that have any of these things, please do share and talk about it below! Sorry if my writing is a little bit sloppy, it's 9AM and I have had like no sleep haha...

I: FCN'13 Recap
Back for it's second time and still a great success. There were two incredible couple performances along with plenty of other amazing solo acts. Big variety of styles and surprises at this dance competition.
Mad props to everyone who auditioned and had the guts to go out there and bust it in front of a judges table. It takes a lot of courage to get up there and do that stuff.
And of course a big thanks to
for organizing and running everything. If you'd like to see all of the performances simply head over to
's YouTube page, which you can find HERE. He has again provided us with great coverage of yet another dance competition.

III: A DancerFur Novel
I was approached by
about a possible collection/novel written about past experiences and events about dance competitions. I find this idea very interesting and cool, so if any of you would like to help out by sharing your personal experiences with fursuit dance competitions or just your growth in general send him a note or email him at CuddlePuppyQuilts[at]gmail.com

Here are your extra videos for this journal, Enjoy!
A video by DS2DIO/LXD for Earth Day. Dancing to a tack composed off of the Earth Chorus
Aja showing a lesson that I learned from greatly sometime ago. And a good thing to practice that greatly improves your freestyle abilities. Just put on a random track you've never heard before and let it move you. Learn how to pick up on certain things. Or in his words, Dance in the Pocket of the music.
An incredible performance by WyldStyl crew from Houston at WOD Dallas this year.
Take care everyone! And keep on dancing

DF Update - FE/FWA Recap, New Admins, FCN Info, Future Plans
Posted 12 years agoFor score and seven years ago, there were many cons with dance events going on and
fell behind and didn't update the DF page because he's a dumb fawx.
But anyways! I got lots of things for you guys this time so I'm just gonna run into it since I'm late xDDD I: FE'13 Recap
What a great first success. Amazing job to all competitors and a big thanks to

II: FWA 2013 Recap
Bigggggggg big big big dance con.
* The LFO workshop panel went very well! Thank you to all who attended that even if you only stayed for a short time! Hope you all enjoyed and learned a lot from the teachers we had around this time.
** Floor Wars, where to even begin. SUCH a big success this time around. The crowd was super involved, the competitors were ALL great, and the venue was perfect. BIG thanks to

for helping this event come out perfectly. Seriously do appreciate it as it wouldn't have been anything without you guys! Also thanks to
for recording and immediately posting all the Floor Wars (and dance comp) videos. Seriously, thank you so much guys. *** The Fursuit Dance Competition was as always. A huge event. FWA does have one of the most interesting dance comps that I've personally been to yet. With a time cap of 1:30 and the big dance floor all to yourself, it's very different. Congratulations to the winners and great job to everyone who not only made it but tried out as well. I know how much it takes to really get up there and do your thing, so regardless of whether you made it or not, you are all great people and dancers for building up the courage to do that.
**** The cypher, although very short lived was pretty awesome. Big enough circle, thanks to all who attended and sorry it didn't happen exactly on schedule.
- A side note about FWA: everything was livestreamed and recorded on justin.tv/furryweekend so you can see all the official AV camera view of everything there.
- Video of entire FWA Dance comp: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd5KUZiy3TE
The judges showcase from Floor Wars! If you'd like to see the rest of the event as well Bemani has them uploaded on this same channel! III: A DancerFur Novel
I was approached by

IV: New/Returning Admins
I have come to realize that this group is growing so large and spreading across so many different social media sites that Blue and I cannot possibly hope to run everything by ourselves. So we are welcoming back one of old admins
He will be helping us manage everything across the interwebs and hopefully with his help we can keep updates very regular and on a weekly basis. I appreciate everyone one of you that has stuck with us and kept active in this community we are building.
We are also welcoming
as an admin. She will be running a tumblr which we will be linking on our front page now as well. So for all you tumblr users we will finally be operating through that site as well! So give these two a big welcome and welcome back!
V: FCN Info and Events
* So FCN is right around the corner. And so with this last bit of time I'm going to get a lot of information to all you attendees :3
**
is working to get a group dance together for a video he has planned at FCN. Suit not required but of course welcome! So anyone looking to participate or have some fun helping him make an awesome vid should head right on over to THIS JOURNAL and take a peak at the video of the choreo he's laid out. *** The fursuit dance competition will be returning again of course! Any info can be found through
I look forward to seeing all the amazing acts that come through this time. Remember, if you're viewing it and you got a camera. POST ITTTT SO EVERYONE CAN SEEVI: Future Plans
We will hopefully very soon be collaborating with a few individuals to bring you guys a line of DancerFur shirts. How soon this will be happening isn't exactly sure, however, we are on the eve of it. It will happen soon! So get ready for that.
Sometime after that I will be getting my own sewing machine and get into creating a line of Harem pants for DF's as well. But that's a bit farther off than the shirts.
Someday, we will also be getting our own website to run just for DancerFurs! How soon that will happen is completely unsure, but that has always been an ultimate goal.
As of now, we will continue operating through the many social medias available to us.
Here are your extra videos for this journal, Enjoy!
A video to announce the launch of Brian Friedman's new clothing line.
Although in my opinion not the worlds fastest. Was pretty damn cool to see haha
It's the new dance craze
Gonna update the front page with the new admins and some new links, add all the new watchers and then post a few things. Thanks for tuning in this time guys! See some of you at FCN!

Last Minute FWA Information! *UPDATED TIMES*
Posted 12 years agoHey there everyone!
here. With FWA just around the corner, I'll be posting once more about all the events and their new updated times according to the online schedule posted on the FWA website! After FWA, I'll get back to regular updates that include all the information about how the FE and FWA events went!
So here we go :D
I: Floor Wars
Due to time constraints for the panel, we sadly will only have a NON-SUIT/OUT-OF-SUIT category of competition. It is a big bummer, but we're doing what we can with the time we were given. And this does not by any means, mean that the competition will turn out boring or uneventful. Anthrocon's Floor Wars was a great success as was MFF's. So we're hoping to finish the trifector here with FWA.

Questions/Inquiries:
You will receive an e-mail confirmation ASAP from me along with answers to any questions or inquiries you include.
PLEASE NOTE, a lot of people have asked for a playlist of possible songs that will be in Floor Wars. I have provided a sample list below of some songs to give you an idea of what to get ready for (this however does not mean these will be the only genre of music played; so be prepared for anything):
Keep On Dancing - Legend Da BeatSlaya
Drop It Low - Ester Dean
Who's That Chick - Rhianna and David Guetta
Red Alert - Basement Jaxx
Let Go - Kezwik
Me Against The Music - Britney Spears and Madonna
Ants - edIT
All of these rules apply to ALL CONTESTANTS:
Slots
There will be 16 competitors. In the event that the slots are all filled up. We will open a waiting list/fill in list for those that did not apply in time. Please only apply if you are for sure going to the convention.
Attendance
We will have a ROLL CALL for all contestants, 15 minutes BEFORE THE PANEL STARTS. This is to ensure that we have even numbers for our brackets and to avoid confusion. If you are not there in time, we will replace your spot with someone who is on the waiting list/willing to battle.
Battle Etiquette
We had a few issues at Floor Wars at AC 2012 that were brought up by some dancers that we will be making rules. We WILL enforce these rules during this event. Breaking these rules WILL result in disqualification.
*NO TOUCHING YOUR OPPONENT* Use your dancing to do the talking. Burns/Hand Motions are fine. But touching your opponent in any means except for a sportsmanlike handshake or hug is not.
*LET YOUR OPPONENT FINISH* No running out in the middle of your opponent's set until they indicate they are done, or they are counted out by the MC.
*NO EXCESSIVE/EXTREMELY VULGAR INSULTS* We want to keep this a PG-13 maximum rated competition. Not only do the judges NOT like it, your fellow furries won't either.
We will make these rules clear at the beginning of the competition as well to make sure that you all remember. There are NO exceptions to these rules.

FAILURE TO LET US KNOW YOU ARE LATE/NOT COMING BEFORE THE COMPETITION STARTS WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION AND POSSIBLE BAN/BLACKLIST FROM THE EVENT ALTOGETHER.
On behalf of all of us in Last-Fur-One, we're super grateful that you guys bless us by competing, cheering, and having fun at FLOOR WARS! Get training, and we'll see you at Furry Weekend Atlanta in Georgia!
To all spectators of the competition. It is GREATLY appreciated if you video tape and post said videos of the competition on sites such as YouTube. This not only helps us get a better view of the event from spectators points of view but also, allows us to look back on the event for future reference.

II: Fursuit Dance Competition
Back again in all it's awesomenesss. The fursuit dance competition is easily one of the biggest highlights for many conventions. To my knowledge FWA was the first competition ever and continues to be a great one every year.
Here are the official rules for this competition: http://www.furryweekend.com/wp-cont.....Comp_Rules.pdf
III: LFO Dance Workshop
last-fur-one crew will also be hosting a small workshop panel for those interested in that. Teachers are not confirmed yet as I have yet to ask all the members going. But I will for sure be there to oversee and help teach a specific style of dance. These are usually pretty helpful to all levels of dancers so don't be shy and come drop in to learn something as well as have a good time.
IV: DancerFurs Cypher
The Official DancerFurs Cypher will be happening Sunday 12 - 3 pm. Location TBD, keep up to date with the twitter feed while at the con. As announcements and details, especially last minute ones will be posted through out the entire con about this event and all dance involved events. There will likely be many other cyphers besides this one, but this is currently the only one with a planned specific time.
and with all that said and done. You have your information posted! Hope to see a lot of you there!

here. With FWA just around the corner, I'll be posting once more about all the events and their new updated times according to the online schedule posted on the FWA website! After FWA, I'll get back to regular updates that include all the information about how the FE and FWA events went! So here we go :D
I: Floor Wars
~~~ Sign-Ups are still OPEN~~~
THIS PANEL WILL BE HELD SATURDAY 4:30pm - 6:30 in the MAIN EVENTS ROOM
There is no longer a major schedule conflict with other dance panels. However, the second audition panel does end at 4. And we require all competitors to be present 15 minutes early. So keep that in mind!Due to time constraints for the panel, we sadly will only have a NON-SUIT/OUT-OF-SUIT category of competition. It is a big bummer, but we're doing what we can with the time we were given. And this does not by any means, mean that the competition will turn out boring or uneventful. Anthrocon's Floor Wars was a great success as was MFF's. So we're hoping to finish the trifector here with FWA.
