You know what hurts?
General | Posted 16 years agoIt hurts to have people expect you to have your life in order with an "I don't care how, DO IT" attitude.
It hurts to see everyone around you know full-well what they want to do with the rest of their lives and have the means to get there, while you're struggling just to see next week.
It hurts to try and do something about it, only to end up with more questions and self-loathing than when you started.

Hi again.

Just fyi
Hi.
General | Posted 16 years agoI hate my life.
My family says they try to support me, but I clam up around them; their judgmental nature is too much for me to bear. I am afraid to share any detail of my life with them, as they inevitably use it against me.
In my offline life, the only thing close to "friends" around me are people who actually know what they want to do with themselves, know how to get there, and know how things will play out. Meanwhile, I have no idea what I want to be doing, or where I should be. "Oh, set goals, do what you want!" is the universal creed. But how are you supposed to do what you want when you don't know what you want? But how can you not know what you want; you've had twenty-one years to figure it out, haven't you?
I'm also trapped in poverty. Just this past week, I've had to spend $180 on two textbooks for school. That's not counting the $75 payments I have to make each month, from August to November. (Used to be just $50, until the tuition hike; thanks, shitty California budget system!) Then my parents told me they've dropped my car insurance, so I have to buy my own. (Not that I feel I shouldn't, they just had the greatest timing on their part.) Couple that with a job that provides erratic hours at best, and I can't afford to save anything.
Speaking of school, I've been swamped with work. Art class, a class I thought I'd have fun in, is taking a serious emotional toll on me. My online sociology class has just proven one thing: I hate sociology, and now the only thing keeping me in the class is that it gives me full-time-student status. My online career planning class so far hasn't taught me a single thing that hasn't been repeated to me countless times before.
...I don't know what I'm trying to say here; I'm just completely down on my life, my present, my future. It's only other anonymous pseudonyms on the internet keeping me from wishing for a permanent way out. Pretty pathetic, huh?

Night
General | Posted 16 years agoI've been posting a lot of these kinds of emo-y journals at night recently, haven't I? But I guess that's understandable.
That's when all my depression bubbles to the top.
That's when I feel like there's no way out.
That's when I feel like dying.

Memes of arts things
General | Posted 16 years agoSo this art meme's going around. What's that? I should do it? Yes, I think I will!
When did you start drawing?
When I was 15/16, and life sucked for me. Drawing felt good.
Which hand do you use for drawing?
Right hand for digital, left hand for traditional.
Which is easier to draw - male or female?
Either one. I'd say male, if only because the simplified anatomy always makes me think I forgot something.
Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Short.
Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
It makes a difference?
Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Side. It's super-easy to do that, I don't know why.
What do you have problems in drawing?
Fingers and hands...also feet
What do you like to draw?
I like drawing undies, lol. But really, I do...to an extent. Gives me a chance to practice my anatomy work, how ever shitty it may be.
Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
They both have their benefits, but at the end of the day, I'm a digital artist. Proportion and line adjustment is infinitely easier on a computer than on a piece of paper.
Where do you start drawing from?
From the head. Heads are always the most difficult part.
What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
...as far as I'm aware, I have no particular habit.
Any tips for coloring/shading?
The bucket tool exists for a reason.
How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
Anything from two hours to two weeks, depending on size and motivation.
What music do you listen to while you draw?
Whatever sounds good. MIDIs and chiptunes work wonders...probably only because I have so many to choose from.
How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
Longer than I think it should.
Your favorite drawing utensils?
My mouse.
Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
None in particular.
Are you satisfied with your current art?
Well, I wouldn't still be drawing if I was.
What kind of artist are you aiming for?
Cartoony! Something you'd see as a still in an animated feature or the like.
Oh, and "The Secret of NIMH" was a really great movie, guys. And unlike other stuff from your childhood, it's just as great a masterpiece as you remember. Go look it up on Hulu if you don't believe me; they got the whole thing.

Life sucks.
General | Posted 16 years agoSo, in this last week, I've had family come and tell me what a piece of shit I am for having an unclean car, not doing anything during my last week of summer, and for having a job that gives hours that are erratic at best.
I go to work, and get my job threatened because some misandronist lady made a complaint over how I refused to help her. (Despite me doing so.)
Today, my parents ask me about me why I'm not going to San Jose State this semester. I had been planning on going next semester, was never planning to go this semester, and up until now I thought we were on the same page about that.
So, I'm one disappointment after another to my parents, and a bad employee to my co-workers and customers at work. Fuck my life.

General | Posted 16 years ago...some fucker lifts my camera. Terrible.
Detailed version: Riding the bus to the Oakland Zoo, I sat down with my backpack, my camera in one of those can't-see-through mesh drink-holders on the side.
So I ride along nonchalantly, and suddenly the driver announces, "End of the line!" I pick up my stuff and go, realizing I'm still a ways away from the Oakland Zoo. So I walk along, and as I go to remove the camera to fit in a water bottle...my camera's not there. I look around, it's nowhere around me. The only explanation: someone pulled it off of me while I was on the bus.
That was a $150 camera. Shit.

I feel out of it.
General | Posted 16 years agoMore late-night angst. Don't know why I'm writing this, but I am.
I feel like a total outsider, no matter where I go or what I do.
I feel like nothing really belongs to me.
I feel like I don't have any friends anymore; just acquaintances.
I feel like all I ever do is set people up for disappointment.
I feel like I just can't do anything right.
I feel like I'm just a useless burden to the people I care about.
I feel like I don't know how to talk to people.
I feel like all the good things I've done are just forgettable things that no one really cares about.
I feel like I should be better than this, but I'm not.
I don't know.
I just don't know.
I feel like a total outsider, no matter where I go or what I do.

So I came back from AC
General | Posted 16 years agoAnd I had an absolute BLAST, let me tell you! Met a lot of cool people, saw a lot of cool panels, hugged some friendly suitors, and had an all-around swell time, something I'd love to replicate.
And a total "THANK YOOOOOU" to
larathen,
cooner,
crionringtail,
asuraludu,
pmoss,
rancid,
inoby,
complication5,
kensukethecat,
keenyfox, and Ian and MR (whose FA names escape me), for contributing to my sketchbook!
And also an apology to
seely and
ritts, among others, for not getting something from you guys when I had the chance. Oh well...next time!
Full day-to-day reports pending. Highlights:
-How not to sleep on an airplane
-Fernando's Cafe is overrated
-Why fursuits are cool
-Expanding a character
-Learning to draw again
-The Game
-Cockblocking Liam Neeson
-Close calls on the way home

I'm high on life
General | Posted 16 years agoTomorrow is my dad's birthday. I was planning on buying him some tickets to a baseball game, but he just requested some shoes instead. So I got him a pair. He'll love 'em, they kick ass. Maybe literally, depending on what he does.
Then the day after that, I'll be packing and leaving for AnthroCon. I'm so excited; gonna meet so many people I've only talked to through a pseudonym before. It's gonna be amazing, I tells ye!
Really, I'm just so giddy with excitement. :3

Another meme; this one for AC
General | Posted 16 years agoA few people are doing this, but I hijacked the template from
larathen
Where are you staying?
Westin.
What day are you getting there?
Early Thursday. Jetlag's gonna be a fountain of joy. :3
Who will you be with?
No one...at first. It'll just be me. You're free to follow if you want, but I just kinda drift around the place.
Do you do free art?
Maybe a little bit.
Do you do trades?
Certainly.
Do you do commissions?
Yeah; but don't expect them to be that great. XD
Do you have prints/ CDs ?
Nope.
Do you do badges?
Uh-uh.
Will you have Art in the Art Show?
Abso-positively-lutely not.
What is your gender?
Male
How old are you?
I'm 21; still have yet to have my first drink, so...I dunno. XD
Can I talk to you?
Totally; in fact, I'll be wearing a badge that says "Ask me about PCA," so that should do a good turn in starting conversations.
Can I touch you?
Not in a naughty place...okay, maybe in a naughty place. But you'll have to pay admission first if you want it so badly!
Can I hang out with you?
Totally; I'd love to roam around AC with a posse.
How can I find you?
Just look for one of two things:
1. The RED Scout
2. The bucket hat and "Orange Iguanas" shirt
3. The black pinstripe vest with some weird emblem on the back.
Three, three things to watch out for! The nature of which I have divulged previously.
That's all, folks; see you at AC, those of you going!
Those not going...see you other places!

Past was broken, and future looks fun.
General | Posted 16 years agoSunday was my birthday. My past five birthdays have been very unpleasant celebrations. And after this one, I just have to say...
...C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER! I had a great day out for my 21st birthday (even found someone in the city had thrown a parade in my honor!), and a tasty dinner at home (with cake afterward!). Got a nice t-shirt from my parents (even if it is a size too small).
Oh, but the greatest present hasn't come yet...it won't be here until July. For you see, thanks to a lucrative tax refund and helpful contributions from all generations of relatives, a vacation years in vision and months in planning has finally come to fruition.
That's right...I'M GOING TO ANTHROCON, BITCHES! WHOOOOOOOOOO!
So, who else is going? Anyone I know?

On the fall of the cartooning industry
General | Posted 16 years agoI haven't posted lately...I don't have much to say these days. Oh well, ruts happen. I'll pull my way out sometime.
Anyway...while lurking on DeviantART, cleaing out my 700 messages after a long absence, I came across some recent news on the new direction Cartoon Network is taking their channel. Laying off animators, putting up too many live-action shows...details follow in this personal essay.
Nary a day goes by when I don't hear some people complaining about how TV today sucks, and was so much better when we were kids. Granted, there's always the chance that we are simply looking on our past with rose-colored glasses, (I know I was when I remembered Ren and Stimpy; have you seen it again lately? It's pretty shit.) but for many others (Rocko's Modern Life is the oft-cited example), that's simply not the case. They were brilliant, they were cool, they were popular. What happened? Creative differences; network execs were trying to tell the artists how to work, and they got tired of that. There's something you can blame the networks for. But I digress...
In a recent announcement, Cartoon Network, of all channels, said they're bringing in several new live-action shows, and layoffs have begun in their animation department. What live-action shows? From what I'm hearing, we've got two Mythbusters ripoffs, a roller coaster quiz show, a VH1 "Internet video countdown" ripoff, and not one, not two, but THREE "High school...with a twist!" pieces of crap. Congratulations, Cartoon Network, you've now joined the Teenybopper Disney trend!
Actually, before I go any further, let me clarify something. Studio execs aren't a bunch of evil people who sit in boardrooms, fanning their capes, twirling their moustaches, adjusting their top-hats, and cackling, "How can we piss more of our viewers off?" No, they're people who look at trends in the world, spend a large amount of time analyzing them, and pondering the billion-dollar question, "What do we need to do to keep people watching our network?"
So, why are they making this switch? Why are they moving into this monocultural quandry? You need only look around you. At the people out on the street, in the bookstore, the movie theater, EVERYWHERE. This trend is what was formed out of we, the people. It's what we wanted. It must be what we wanted. Because we all had the choice, didn't we? Of course we did. Nickelodeon didn't send out secret agents to put guns to peoples' heads for not watching iCarly. Stephenie Meyer didn't send out letter-bombs to every household lacking a Twilight book set. And Disney didn't call for the heads of everyone who didn't buy a ticket to High School Musical 3. It's only our money, our viewership, our will, that lets this media flourish. If we didn't want it for our entertainment, we could've changed it any time, BY NOT BUYING OR WATCHING IT. And yet now, there it is.
Welcome to the creative free-market. Fuck you.

On the plus-side, at least we finally know Adventure Time is still on the way.

My own FC report...and it only took a week!
General | Posted 17 years agoSo, Further Confusion.
I admit, I was nervous, walking from the Holiday Inn parking lot to the Doubletree that Saturday. I've never been to any sort of convention before, let alone one for furries. Luckily, I had a friend who'd be there to help me. Specifically, my under-appreciated friend
amtrack88, who had a few friends of his own along, so I didn't get lonely.
After registration, we went browsing around the Dealer's Den (didn't buy anything, though; didn't have cash on-hand), where I picked up some autographs in lieu of the commissions I couldn't afford, not to mention still have some sort of keepsake to show I met the cool people I did. Specifically, autographs from:
-Zen Migawa
-Moody Ferret
-Ken-jo
-Nani Moose
-Xian Jaguar
-Foxer 421
-Kilgore Wolfe
After such browsing, we just walked around the whole convention, checking out the gaming room, the panels. Also checked out a fellow PCAer,
yodafire, who had set up a bit of a Poke-HQ in one of the rooms (
melfice had already arrived there), so I chilled there for a bit too.
7 PM rolled around, so we left to get in line for the Masquerade, and just made it inside. There were quite a few elaborate costumes to be seen, all of them cool in their own way.
Later on, after doing some other stuff (I don't recall what exactly I did, though a lot of walking was involved), I came back for the dance, sticking around until sometime after midnight, when I decide it's a good time to pack up and go home, since I've got work in the morning.
However, I couldn't stay away. Immediately after work, I headed back AGAIN, for Sunday! This day, though, I was alone. Still had a great time, though. Furry Night Live was an awesome show, even if its pre-show did stretch on way longer than I'd like. (In fact, if anyone has a video of that "Surf Fu" skit, could you please link me to it? That was my favorite.) And there was an Improv panel taking place downstairs, which I happily partook in.
After that, I hit the dance floor again, which was every bit as awesome as Saturday; maybe even moreso, since this would be the last dance of the Con for me. I finally had enough and headed home around 1, 1:30.
All in all, I'm glad I took the time and money to come to FC. I met some amazing people, saw some awesome works of art (Not all art starts on canvas/paper, but that's a discussion for another day), and had the most fun I've had in years. In fact, I may go so far as to say I've never seen a group so friendly, so inviting, so cheerful...as everyone I met at this convention. Even if I did miss a couple people I wanted oh-so-much to meet (Specifically
rickgriffin,
kodadax, and
domafox, though I did spend some time dancing with the latter at Sunday's dance (While he was in-costume, natch, though I doubt he knew who I was)).
Will I be back next year? You bet your ass I will. Already, I'm making plans to go to Califur in June, and I succeeded in scoring a free pass to the Rocky Mountain Fur Con in August. (Which I'm not sure if I'll be attending, as I've no clue where it is.)
If furry is wrong, then FC's made it official: I don't want to be right!

Back from FC
General | Posted 17 years agoYeah, back from a weekend of FC. I want more.
Super-tired, will write up something more substantial tomorrow.
Super-tired, will write up something more substantial tomorrow.
Okay, so I'm going to FC...
General | Posted 17 years ago...now, the second question is: when?
I'll be there Saturday. You'll probably find me wandering the Artists' Alley looking for autographs (not drawings), in hopes of telling the cool artists from the total pricks. I'll also be entering the Brawl Tournament that night, that'll rock.
After that, the third question is: how will I recognize you?
Look for the bucket hat, and the Orange Iguanas shirt.
See you there! I'll have a sketchbook of my own; hopefully this one can be filled up with autographs instead of the usual pictures.

Let's go see it!
So, it's Halloween.
General | Posted 17 years agoControversy meme: Why am I doing this?
General | Posted 17 years ago[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
If I didn't have the guts, I wouldn't be sitting here answering all this crap, now would I?
[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
I don't do it, I've never wanted to do it, why would I suddenly start if it were legal?
[03] Abortion: for or against it?
For.
[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
Depends on what they'd do; gender's a moot point.
[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
Of course I believe in the death penalty; what do you think happens when they're strapped into the chair? They just go to sleep for a bit?
[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
C&P'd from question 2: I don't do it, I've never wanted to do it, why would I suddenly start if it were legal?
[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
What's this supposed to mean? I don't have any say in such matters.
[08] Do you believe in God?
Sure.
[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Absolutely, without a doubt, yes.
[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
Look back on that question; see that "Illegal" word? It's there for a reason, dearie.
[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
Again, not my say.
[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
Further; I think you should be allowed to drink before you're allowed to drive. S'worked fine in Europe. But again, moot point for me, given my answers for questions 2 and 6.
[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Yes I do.
[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
No. Especially in cases of terminal illness.
[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
Depends on why, and how. Spanking, in my view of parenting, is meant as a detractor for the most serious infractions.
[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Sure. It's only a flag. Not like I'm going to be tearing states apart or something.
[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
Obama. I don't trust McCain's running mate.
[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Nope; that's what I'm here for.
