To be clear, this isn't some quick-fiction Tolkien-esque fantasy, where there are elves and beastkin around every corner. And neither is this a tale of some run-down motel that can't keep out the city's scavengers - it's actually a fairly fancy and well-to-do place.
No, I'm just talking about a fox in a hotel corridor - or, to be more specific, someone dressed in a detailed, full-bodied fox costume.
Well anyway. I didn't really pay much attention to them. I'll be honest, it just wasn't really all that shocking. After all, in that same corridor, I'd walked past a wolf, a zebra, and two cute bird-dragons called 'avali', and the only one I really looked at for any amount of time was a fluffy lizard-like creature, who had a glowing LED-screen snout giving an RGB grin to its friends. My mind was simultaneously elsewhere - after all, I'd just come from a bar where a guy in ears, a crop top, and a mini-skirt was spinning some chill beats to a sea of chattering rainbow-clad partiers. And I was also thinking ahead to a panel in an hour, where people who enjoyed the idea of eating each other would meet to chat (I would not end up going to it, since it overfilled its room).
Honestly, to me, the most surprising thing in the corridor was someone wearing a suave black beret which really matched their jacket. I made sure to tell them. I got a beaming smile in response.
This is what it's like at a furry convention.
I don't know what you think of when I say that term. I don't know if you're a furry veteran, and this all sounds familiar and nostalgia-inducing. I don't know if you're a young furry or new to the fandom, and it sounds inconceivable that I'd walk past a fursuiter and barely be able to recall the species. You may even not be in the fandom at all, and perhaps so separated from the culture that you're still waiting for me to explain that whole enjoying-eating-each-other thing.
You might have heard stories of raucous sex-parties. Maybe that old CSI episode with a pile of writhing horny furries flickers through your mind. Maybe such sordid nights are repulsive to you. Maybe you can't stop wondering. Maybe you sit in your room at night, picturing the fantasy of being tied up in a hotel room in some foreign country. Maybe you've heard of the drama, of pizzas and latex and projectors on hotel buildings and-
...Let me tell you what it feels like, this furry con, at a nice lakeside hotel just outside a city in the middle of England. Let me tell you of the pride flags that colour the walls and booths and flow as capes. Let me tell you how noisy it is in the bars, Vengaboys playing over the speakers, where every table has a gaggle of friends talking about who-knows-what, or fiddling around card games, or browsing Bluesky with their fursuit head laying on the table and their hair matted against their neck. Let me tell you of the muffled laughter through the walls of the next panel room where artists are drawing fursuiters using Mario Paint (SNES, 1992). Let me tell you of getting a ping on your phone, because the official convention announcement channel just sent four thousand attendees a joke about badgers.
Let me tell you about sitting down at a table you've squeezed into near the bar, between a friend who's a robot and a friend who's two people, and plonking down a pitcher of furry-themed cocktail in front of a killer trans woman that you met at a gameshow about porn, and immediately getting a full-bodied hug from their girlfriend that you've never met before in your life.
Let me tell you about how different - how loving - how accepting - how eclectic and wild and colourful it is, that a fox in a hotel corridor is something you barely notice.

"Be Yourself"
Posted a year ago"Be Yourself", says the Furry Fandom. And yet, as with many things in life, it's far easier said than done.
I've found that 'being myself' can take a lot of bravery, but I want to tell you why it's so, so important.
Storytime!
At Eurofurence this year, I ran the e621 Gameshow for the third year in a row. And for the third year in a row, we were over capacity. As in, security-comes-in-to-tell-people-to-leave levels of over capacity (Which, my dear sympathies once again with those who had to go!)
We had a crowd that was there for an hour and a half of weird furry porn. Who cheered for horsecock. Who delighted in Falco Lombardi macro art. A hundred people - a quarter of the room - gleefully admitted to being into vore. The atmosphere was electric, and I hadn't even needed my e-stim kit. This was a crowd who rejoiced in the adult side of the fandom!
And then I asked them - how many people had a fetish they'd be nervous admitting to?
A third of the room raised their hands.
In a room that had been laughing moments earlier about the amount of Mufasa/Simba porn, or getting a 100% success rate on guessing popular cock shapes, 1/3 of them weren't confident in revealing those same parts of themselves.
I don't think this is rare.
I've had folks ask me if I get hate for the kind of art I draw (not really much at all, by the way). But worse, I get people telling me - they wish they could draw what they want, write the characters they love… but they fear what others might say.
I've had commissioners remain anonymous, for fear of people knowing what they're into. Known artists start up alt accounts, so that they can draw a kink without their friends knowing. Writers wringing their hands over possible reactions to their stories.
And I would love to tell you it's all just fear - but truth is, it isn't.
Because it ain't just the big patron sites that are swinging the axe on the 'too weird'. Our own sites - our communities - sharpen their restrictions. Whole kinks, loving and accepted, are now 'too far'. (I say, pointedly, on this site.)
We're fearing the gaze from the outside. We're hearing their derision. And that can scare us, cause us to hide not just ourselves, but those around us. "What if they think that I'm into that? What would they say? I need to prove I'm not!"
We all crave love and acceptance. And in a fandom formed in rejection from society, don't we just hold such ideals even more tightly? So much so that the very idea of this same community throwing us out - for being ourselves? Of course it's terrifying.
But it turns out, even us outcasts, outsiders… we can all hold prejudices. We all have the ability to draw lines, and give too little thought to what that means. We can so easily turn our own opinions, our fear of what others think of us, into rules that hurt and exclude.
And therein lies the issue. "Be yourself", says the fandom, without stopping to consider how treacherous, how thorned that path can be. To be yourself, sometimes, is to suffer the disgust of those who would tell you to do it in the first place.
But… I'm missing something.
Thing is, this fandom isn't based on any one thing. We're not just here because Zootopia was a kinda cool movie, or Twokinds is pretty sexy, or StarFox looks good when he's fifteen stories tall.
We follow no one IP, no webcomic, no TV show. We follow only one thing:
Ourselves.
We make the fandom we live in. We're dozens of sexualities, a hundred meetups and conventions, a thousand discord servers and Telegram channels, a million pictures and stories and alt-accounts and roleplays…
We decide what we are.
Aren't we the haven of the weird? The questioning of sexualities? The taboo, even incomprehensible kinks? We joke about vore, knots, gratuitous foot fetishists, but isn't that what makes this place home? Isn't every artist drawing obvious kink art following a beautiful legacy?
We are the monsterfuckers. The maw-obsessed, the paw-sluts, the musk-lovers (er, not that one). With every fetish we draw, every kink we commission, every smut-filled story and problematic character and taboo-laden roleplay…
We're the fandom, making ourselves.
Through being myself, through art and stories and chats and servers, I've found new communities. New friends. New ways to think, new art to enjoy. I've found love, deeper than I ever thought possible.
I've found myself.
And I've been told that through my artwork, stories, friend groups, I've helped people do the same. They've found the words to describe what's been inside them this whole time.
They've found they're not alone.
It's one of the sweetest and most delightful things I've heard.
Yes, it takes bravery to be yourself. You risk being misperceived, either accidentally or wilfully. You risk hurt. You risk confusion. But it's nothing you haven't done before. And in its wake, you will find yourself.
Do not let other people dictate who you are.
Do not let other people dictate who you are.
So when I say to keep furry weird, this is what I mean. Find that part of yourself that yearns to be free, and make this fandom the place for it.
Be yourself. Be so amazingly yourself that your very existence is an act of rebellion.
And Keep. Furry. Weird.

What does your Fursona mean to you?
Posted 6 years agoIt's a topic I've been thinking about on and off for years. Fursonas are very special to all of us, I know; they define us, they're how we present ourselves to the furry world. But what do they represent? That's what I'm curious about - so I'm asking you guys!
Are they who you are? Are they who you wish to be? Are they an idea you want to enjoy exploring, but isn't some idealised self in themselves?
And, further to this, how much of a character are your fursonas, perhaps with backstories and individual personalities, and how much are they just you, but online? And if they're a character, how serious are they, or are they just fun?
Lemme know in the comments. I'm interested <3
And hell, show off pictures while you're at it, why not~ Let's see what you're proud of creating :3
My own answer to this right now, is that Dark Violet is not really me in totality; in a way, she represents my creativity, silliness, and sexuality. She is not me, per se, but a part of me. In that way as well, she's not really a character either, with some sort of arc or backstory - she's, I suppose, like an abstract painting of myself. Distinct, and true - to an extent :3 She's the part of me that just wants to create and have fun, y'know? <3

No, you're slow :D Anyway, we realised (After some advice) that there's not really a single repository for this stuff, and a lot of it doesn't actually get posted, which sucks! I'm entertaining the idea of getting something for more portable drawing capability, so some kinda tablet or iPad or Surface, or even a 2-in-1 laptop.
Does anyone know how good any of the above are when it comes to drawing? Or does anyone know anything else that's pretty good for that?

Eurofurence 24 + Panel: Marking a Sparkledog 2
Posted 7 years agoGood day, folks! Hope things are going well!
It's been a bit of a crazy time for me lately. It started with a few days out, then going to Sweden at the beginning of this month, then my last week at my current University. In the near future, I have a family holiday, a gathering with friends, and eventually moving all the way to India for two and a half years - it's going to be an incredible, if very tiring, time.
So why not have some incredible fun in the midst of it all with Eurofurence?
Woo! It's time to go back for more amazing times at the pleasure cruise of furry conventions. I'm super excited for this year! In fact, this time tomorrow (As of typing this) I should already be there! I have high hopes this year for good food and great friends. It's gonna be incredble!
And let's not forget - I have another panel this year!
Last year's panel was a roaring success (in terms of humour - it was a very dark moment for decency). We return this year to write up the backstory, this time with my wonderful long-time friend and professional british person

It's been a bit of a crazy time for me lately. It started with a few days out, then going to Sweden at the beginning of this month, then my last week at my current University. In the near future, I have a family holiday, a gathering with friends, and eventually moving all the way to India for two and a half years - it's going to be an incredible, if very tiring, time.
So why not have some incredible fun in the midst of it all with Eurofurence?
Woo! It's time to go back for more amazing times at the pleasure cruise of furry conventions. I'm super excited for this year! In fact, this time tomorrow (As of typing this) I should already be there! I have high hopes this year for good food and great friends. It's gonna be incredble!
And let's not forget - I have another panel this year!
"Marking a Sparkledog 2: The Tragic Backstory"
In a venture that only be described as 'ill-advised' and 'an affront to good taste', we continue our quest to make the worst Original Character ever.
Despite alcohol-fuelled attempts to forget, we reprise last year's panel and return to our self-imposed quest of creating the worst Original Character ever. Suffer with us by suggesting the most tired tropes, angsty plot points, and cringe-worthy cliches, while Dark Violet (Artist, Writer) and Wrincewind (Lab Rat For Hire) try to stitch them all together, and write a tragic backstory for the ages.Last year's panel was a roaring success (in terms of humour - it was a very dark moment for decency). We return this year to write up the backstory, this time with my wonderful long-time friend and professional british person

Café Plaisir: Underdog (+Didn't get your Ultimate Art Pack?

So a bunch of you will probably have checked out mine and
Dryftwood62's Café Plaisir: Underdog comic currently being released, and I just want to say first off that it's been fantastic seeing the response from it. So many kind words and so much support - I've been so excited sharing my first comic project with you, and I know Dryftwood has also been looking forward to showing it off, so we're both incredibly happy you enjoy it so much!
I'd also like to thanks all of you who have bought the Ultimate Art Pack. This comic took a lot of work, and seeing this sort of appreciation just warms my fuzzy heart*.
Now, for those that have bought the art pack! Upon checkout at the site, it's supposed to redirect you to a link where you can download the pack - but, alas, it seems that technology can be finicky sometimes, and I've recieved a few notes asking where it is. Sorry about that!
So, if you've bought the Art Pack and haven't received it yet, just shoot me a note, email, telegram notification etc., and let me know the paypal address you bought it with. I'll get it off to you pronto ^w^

*Sudden increases in the temperature of vital organs is not ordinary, and a trained medical professional should be sought at the earliest opportunity. Or you should at least not let your Arcanine go that deep.

No Internet!

So, hey, y'know that whole internet thing y'all got going for ya? Turns out it's not a constant and subject to the whims of the universe at large, and I have been one of the lucky ones selected to not have it for a while!
I won't got into detail, but basically, I've been without internet for about a week now, and it'll continue for the rest of the month in fact. So, uploads will be almost none-existant - but the silver lining is that, damn does a lack of internet do wonders for my focus in art. So when I eventually come back, I'll have a bunch of stuff to show you...
Oh, quite so.
