Nanu nanu no more. RIP Robin Williams
Posted 11 years agoRobin Williams, legendary comedian and actor, died today, allegedly by his own hand.
I'm... at a loss for words right now.
I do have one story to share, not mine, someone else's. Judith Hoag, the actress who played April O'Neil in the 1990 TMNT film, was interviewed recently by Yahoo. She mentioned she was working with Williams on "Cadillac Man" at the same time she was film TMNT. Being a grown adult, she was ashamed to work on such a goofy movie and when Williams asked her what movie she was running up to New York to film on the weekends, she grumbled and said what it was. Williams was shocked and estatic, happy to know there was going to be Ninja Turtles movie. Apparently he was a fan.
He was one of us, after all. :)

Some artists offering commissions, and Machete Kills!
Posted 11 years agoTwo artists I've hired in the past are currently offering commissions:
elementalwolf
marjorywarrenne
Please check them out! And see if you can send them some business
Now, onto Machete Kills... it's a weird James Bondian hyper violent movie with Danny Trejo and Mel Gibson. Something very weird... but I'm liking it so far, in a trashy sort of way.

Adios, Fred Phelps (Elegy for a cartoon character)
Posted 11 years agoThe world lost firebrand preacher Fred Phelps, pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church in Colorado that spent a better part of the 1990s through the present protesting soldier funerals, gay marriages and movie premieres with his weirdo 1950s style of Gospel.
Phelps first gained exposure by protesting Matthew Shepherd's funeral in Wyoming. Afterward, he frequently showed up at high-profile funerals, usually U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. His message was repeated but he mostly existed as a punchline.
Which is what struck me most of all. Phelps was like a cartoon character, someone so removed from reality and any trace of public respect that you almost think he was a fictional character, some comedian pretending to be a nutso fire and brimstone preacher. What, if anything, he ever accomplished besides literally preaching to his own choir is debatable.
Really, from this point on, he exists only as the answer to a trivia question. Kids 20 years from now will only hear about him second-hand when their parents say something to the effect of "Remember that one preacher who used to protest people's funerals all the time?"
Such is fate of all two-bit hatemongers, I suppose. Not sure where I was going with all this, just had to get it out of my system.

My Good Artist Friend Nicole Could Use Some Help
Posted 12 years agoShameless copy and pasted from Dressari's journal. But I'm happy to spread the word.
Ladies and gentlemen we're in need of your support to help out a great artist on FA.
erulla's father is in need of a kidney transplant and needs to raise $1200 just to afford the procedure.
So we are reaching out to generous folks to come watch
dressari,
witchiebunny,
gavyn and perhaps some others to play video games on livestream. (Which will be hosted by gavyn) on the 31st of August at around 10am Central, 9am Eastern, 11am Western. We invite you all to come watch us play and flail around like school kids as we fight off hordes of Zombies, lay smack down on Cerberus and Reapers, squash Aliens and who knows what else for fun and laughs.
The entire game list is to be decided and we're still smoothing out what will be on the list. Remember we're roughing out 12 hours for a good cause and even if you can't donate or can only pass on a few bucks it's every cent that makes the difference.
There's an active donation page set up at http://www.gofundme.com/Dadskidneys by Erulla herself where you can find out more details and where you can donate to.
Spread the word as much as you can, please, the more this gets around the more it can touch and bring people along to have fun and watch.

So, fifth anniversary of comic and whatnot
Posted 12 years agoYeah, this week marks the 5th anniversary of my webcomic "At Arm's Length." I've been really happy with it so far, so yay for that!
Regrets? Looking back, I see we know very little about the main characters besides just personality. I need to rectify that. In the future I promise more character-driven pieces where we actually get to the heart of different relationships, character motivations, etc.
I wish I had planned out for this better, but real world issues have siphoned my time from me. In any case, I hope you all have enjoyed the story so far, and continue to tune in!

Do you like music? Do you like religious music performed in it's original German? Do you like to give money away on the internet?
Then boy, this is for you! The Schola Cantorum singing group in California is looking to raise funds on Kickstarter to fund the performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion.
In the group's own words: "Your pledge in any amount from $10 to $1000 will enable us to offer Bach's monumental masterpiece free of charge for nearly a thousand audience members to experience live and locally in their own community."

Well, it's morning in America
Posted 13 years agoWell, election is over and I've woken from a long sleep. Not bitter, not angry, just accepting the new long-term social paradigm of America.
I find that I really don't like my country all that much come election time. I've really began to hate it since I first discovered the internet and what passes for discussion on it. So we have four more years of Obama. My response? Meh. Yeah, that's about the best I can muster. Because at the end of the day, meh is all either one of the candidates deserve. This was a great victory for whatever single-interest groups supported the winning candidate. But nothing is going to change because of this election. There's no time for self-reflection or anything, just both sides recessing to their normal bodies until the next cycle.
We've just become a country that's 100% bitter all the time. The losing voters are bitter because they lost, the winners are bitter because they can't believe so many voted against their candidate. And most importantly, this isn't the end of anything. This is just the first day of the 2016 presidential campaign. I expect every issue, and I mean EVERY ONE that pops up in the next four years to be fodder for dissemination on cable news and blogs about who will win next time.

Upcoming comic arcs, Kobi's new album and other such things
Posted 13 years agoHello folks!
First thing,
kobi-lacroix just loaded a comedy album titled "Grapefruit Teeth" for sale at: http://kobilacroix.bandcamp.com/
It's funny in a Weird Al Yankovic sort of way. Give it a listen and if you like it, buy the thing. :)
As for my comic, we're currently in the middle of story arc involving angry dwarves. Following that, we'll check up on what
thekaotix's characters Kaige and Kiley have been up to. :)
Also, I'm currently on the job hunt. Wish me well in my endeavors.

Posted 15 years agoMy uncle passed away today from alcohol poisoning. I have a wide range of emotions running through my head.
I'm sad my uncle's not here anymore, I'm crushed for my grandmother and mother, I'm pissed at my uncle for his stupid life choices, I'm heartbroken for myself... my uncle, despite his failings, was a human being and he was blood.
I spoke with him earlier today, a few hours before he died. I asked him how he was doing, and he said he was doing great, only way he could be better is if he was in Heaven. I honestly hope he is right now.

2 years and 200 strips, baby!
Posted 15 years ago"At Arm's Length," my webcomic of extra awesomeness, has reached two milestones.
The first is that today marks the comic's second anniversary! Yay! :)
The second is that the comic recent hit 200 strips! It's a time of celebration and gratuitous MST3K references! So call yourself Art and swing on by! :)

Immortality: Gift or Curse?
Posted 15 years agoReading the current "Jack" storyline when this tidbit is dropped on the main character in the current story:
http://www.pholph.com/strip.php?id=5&sid=3284
Namely, Megan has become "unstuck" from the life cycle, and will apparently live forever. Others have had this happen to them as well in the comic, so we have who knows how many immortal people walking around in the story setting.
Which leads me to wonder, would you really want immortality?
One the one hand, it would be cool to see the changes in civilization over the course of centuries, millenia, etc. You can have a first hand account of the first flight to Mars, teleportation, our first contact with alien life, etc... things that people living now would love to see but doubt will happen in their lifetime.
On the other hand, imagine outliving all your friends, your family. Knowing that EVERYONE you form a bond with will only be around for a relatively short time. Watching your whole civilization crumble eventually, not to mention devastating wars and natural disasters in the future. The immortals in this Jack setting don't need to eat, sleep, (injuries are also instantly healed, etc.) so they CAN'T die, even if they try to. If they ever do drop THE BOMB, you'd be left alone in the nuclear wasteland.
The worst thing would be to be buried alive or fall into a volcano or something. Imagine being STUCK for millions of years. "I have no mouth and I must scream" indeed... Actually, even worst then that, if you're still alive at the end of time.... Ouch.
So, what do you guys think: immortality, good or bad?
