Coyote F.A.Q. part 4
General | Posted 16 years agoQuestion 4: Do coyotes present any threat to livestock (other than chickens, cats?)
While some coyotes do kill lambs and the occasional calf, not all do. If a coyote on a farm is not bothering livestock, the best thing a farmer can do is leave it alone. This coyote will keep other coyotes that may harm livestock from moving into the area. Coyotes, being predators, will naturally prey on sick or injured animals, be they wild or domesticated. Dogs and cats that are allowed to run loose, or that are dumped in the country and become feral, cause far more damage to both livestock and wildlife than coyotes. Dogs tend to form and hunt in packs and attack larger prey, while in Indiana the coyote usually hunts alone. Also, coyotes hunt for food, dogs often kill by chasing and catching animals for "fun" rather than food.

General | Posted 16 years agoIn Memoriam - Vedrona
http://www.coyoterescue.org/n-picts.....09-Vedrona.jpg
Vedrona 1993 - 2010
Vedrona passed away on January 14th 2010 She would have been seventeen this coming April. She is survived by her brother, Marc who lives at the Nature Center at Land Between The Lakes in KY. She and her sibblings were taken from the Purdue Airport when the air control operators heard the manager was going to poison them or set them on fire in their den.
She was a good coyote who was never any trouble in her lifetime. She lived her life with Mama's Boy. They had a very close relationship.
I will miss her.

Coyote F.A.Q. part 3
General | Posted 16 years agoQuestion 3: Do farmers actually realize more benefit than detriment by their presence in terms of them killing rodents and other pests that eat their crops?
Since coyotes prey on rodents, grasshoppers, insects and other pests, farmers can benefit from reduced use of pesticides and poisons to control these pest populations. According to laboratory observations done at Wolf Park, Battle Ground, IN, one captive coyote ate 10,000 mice in a year, . From my own personal experience, I had a coyote living near my barn which killed 11 rats in one 24 hour period. They also help to keep the environment clean by eating carrion, including road kill.

Coyote F.A.Q. part 2
General | Posted 16 years agoQuestion 2: Was their natural population check the wolf?
Coyotes natural predators were the wolf, cougar and bobcat. However, there are other natural factors that also keep the population in check. We know that availability of prey (rodents, mice voles, rats, rabbits, squirrels) determines the coyote population within an area. When there is an abundance of prey, litters tend to be larger. When prey is scarce, litters tend to be smaller. Population is also limited by the dispersal of the pups at about 10 months of age. At this time they must leave their home territories to find territories of their own, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles to do so. Less than 50 percent survive that journey. A combination of hunters, automobiles, distemper, parvo-virus, and starvation (from competition with other migrant coyotes) lead to the majority of these deaths. These factors: hunters, cars and disease, also impact the natural population within a given home range. Another factor that controls population involves the fertility cycle. Male coyotes, unlike dogs which are fertile year-round, are only fertile once a year. This cycle begins approximately a month before the female coyote comes into estrus in about January. In Indiana, pups are born towards the end of March. Cold weather and snow during the first few weeks of the pup's life affects their survival rate. During the time immediately following the birth of the pups, the female depends on the male for food, as she does not leave the pups during the first two weeks. If anything happens to the male from the conception of the pups until two weeks after they are born, the pups will generally not survive, as the mother has no source for her own nutrition without the male and therefore cannot take care of the pups.

Coyote F.A.Q. part 1
General | Posted 16 years agoQuestion 1: Is there an overpopulation problem in Indiana?
According to Dr. Larry Lehman, Indiana state biologist for fur-bearing animals at the Forest-Wildlife Headquarters, Mitchell, IN, the population of coyotes exploded in the 1970's, leveled out in the 1980's, and has remained steady at that level through the year 2000.
and...though some of you may not know who this is (if not, wiki him), I want you to raise your paws to harry Houdini being a natural coyote.

It's official
General | Posted 16 years agoI've decided to make it the official DK theme.
While it's sneaky like the foxes in our pack, it's also clever and used for a thief like coyotes are portrayed as, so it fits us both. I may change it if there's a good replacement. Instead of the confusion we had in the previous journal, let's do this in an orderly fashion. Any who wants to contribute will post a link coupled with their brief reason why we should use it. We'll have a vote on the choices in comparison to the current theme to see if it'll be replaced. No non-contribution comments to keep it organized.

Coyote Facial Expressions
General | Posted 16 years agoNeutral face
The eyes are open, the ears erect and the lips relaxed. The neutral face often grades into a relaxed open-mouth face. (Fox, 1971)
Alert face
The ears and eyes directed strongly forward suggest that the coyote is alert to some source of stimulation. The lips also appear more tensed than in the neutral face. (Brown, 1973)
Low intensity threat face ( Fig. 2j)
The corners of the mouth are brought forward and the lips may be retracted vertically slightly to expose the canines and some of the other teeth. The eyes are closed slightly or narrowed as the threat becomes more intense.
Small mouth threat face (Fig. 2a)
The ears are erect and directed forward and the eyes are closed slightly. The mouth is closed with the lips covering the teeth and the corners of the mouth are brought forward into a "pucker". (Fox, 1970)
Aggressive threat face (Fig. 2b)
The mouth is opened wide into a gape with the corners of the mouth brought forward and the lips retracted vertically to expose the canines and incisors. The eyes are narrowed. (Brown, 1973)
Defensive threat face (Fig. 2c)
The mouth is opened wide but the corners of the mouth are pulled back and the lips are retracted to expose most of the teeth. This jaw gape emerges first as a startle response in coyote pups. ( Fox, 1971) The ears are laid back on the head and the eyes are open. The defensive threat face may incorporate the submissive grin ( Fig, 2d,e) The mouth is opened only slightly and the corners are pulled back with the lips retracted to expose most of the teeth. The ears vary in position from erect to laid back. (Fox,1971)
Defensive aggressive threat face ( Fig. 2g)
The mouth is opened wide with the lips drawn back to expose the teeth. The ears are laid back and eyes are opened or narrowed.
Submissive play face ( Fig. 2h)
The mouth is opened slightly with the lips moderately retracted to expose the tips of the teeth. The eyes are wide open and the ears are back.
http://coyoterescue.com/photos/Coyo.....munication.gif
These facial expressions have been described at rather arbitrary points along a finely graded agonistic continuum incorporating various levels of aggression and fear. The ears generally provide a good indication of the position of the animal along the agonistic continuum from aggression (ears erect) to submission (ears laid back). However, the ears often rapidly oscillate between intermediate positions refecting not only oscillations in motivation, but probably also response to auditory stimuli from the environment. When the coyote is extremely submissive with its ears laid back tightly auditory stimuli are probably at a low priority.
The eyes are not consistant barometers of agonistic intent. They may be wide open or narrowed during either aggression or submission. However, line of sight is important since a direct stare constitutes a threat. The submissive antithesis of the stare is to look away.
