Mob Mentality / 2 SLOTS LEFT FOR $20 COMMISSIONS
General | Posted 16 years agoOn the first topic of discussion I wanted to bring up something I thought might be somewhat important here.
Mob mentality..
It takes many different forms. Not just the LA riot type where it just suddenly turns to violence. Finger pointing, blaming, even to varying degrees, political rallies, religious sermons etc..
I'm not making a stab at anyone who is religious, or has a particular political view. I won't post either or here, or at least try too. My political views are only sourced at my core beliefs, but when I try to explain it, I sound like a babbling idiot and have a hard time wording my arguments. Poor
fisk has bared the brunt of my non-directional rants. Especially when it comes to art, I have many core beliefs well founded.. but have a hard time wording it on the spot...
But the point is, don't be afraid to dig into yourself and understand what it is you feel is right. Take the time to understand it.
A while back, when I was in school. I was on the story/directing board of a project that was supposed to animate a short comic of Lackadaisy Cats by Tracey Butler.
I was simply advising but really what I had to say clearly had absolutely no value. The comic was a short 4 panel comic with a great set up, delivery, and pun at the end. Pretty well storyboarded for us. As simple as it was, they wanted to make it far more extravagant than it was.
Their reasoning, "We must treat the audience like they are idiots." This, in many respects, goes against all of my storytelling and directing sensibilities. Providing some sort of backstory, and an understanding of the characters and time is important. My feeling is though, if you wish to garner an intelligent audience, then bring out the intelligence inside them. It's a challenge, but it's not impossible. I don't believe that there is a large quantity of really intelligent people out there, but I do think all of them can pick up on subtle cues.
Though I made my protests and wanted to keep the project simple, easy, and fun, it went unheard because the rest of the board just nodded along with the first guy. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about. If I had said what I felt about film making first in the same tone, I'm sure they would have easily have flocked. I would, however, be just as dissapointed. No one took the time to think for themselves. They simply went on the first though that entered their heads that sounded like it made sense, but not because it did.
The project eventually fell apart before production even started. Not because I left, naw they could have done whatever they wanted if any of them had the drive to do it. It was because they all simply followed and no one, of their own will, actually wanted to do the project. Doing was hard, agreeing was easy.
The point is that it's very easy to be swept up in the moment. To let your mind be controlled by the first thought that someone puts there. Though it only takes a few seconds to actually take the time and think about the words that others are saying. And only a few moments more to understand it.
Judge for yourself whether something is right or wrong. Worth campaigning or crusading for or against. You were given a mind, use it :3

So today I was very unproductive.
I had a late day and headed out to Binders art store with
bonk and purchased about $80 worth of markers and pens and pencils, and got an awesome discount cuz I'S A PROFESIONALS!! XP Seriously it was awesome to pick out about $130 worth of stuff and only pay for $80 of it.
Again guys thanks for all your support for my art supplies fundraiser.
I shall be REALLY productive tomorrow I promise!

Here are the types of commissions I cannot take..
I will not take Rape, cub, skat, and quadruped.
Now let me get into a little bit of definition here
If your character happens to simply be a cub or a quadruped, I have absolutely no problem simply drawing your character... However I will NOT draw them in any adult themed pictures. Any solo or duo or any type of porn AT ALL.
I do apologize for any inconveniences and confusions I may have stirred but i do wish to make that clear. No don't worry, I'm not going to stand on my soap box about what I don't like and what not, I just want to avoid any wasted time on both my behalf and yours.

Well I was talking with my good buddy
amonomega last night because I was a bit on the iffy side about bringing this up.I've been a bit on the perturbed side in regards to the 100 sketch challenge. Not because everyone has started doing it. I'm happy! I'm excited about that.

It's me again! So again, I'm sorry to bug ya all about it but I do have a little bit more to request ( since no one responded yesterday ) in regards to my art supplies donations..
What I'm trying to re-supply myself on are-
Brush pens
Super Fine Tip Pens
multi colored color erase pencils,
replenishing various warm and cool greys
(primarily 30%, 40%, and 50% since those are the ones I use)
Then that among some of my flesh tones, various purples ( which I use for bases of colors) blues, yellows, and a few other colors. It's Prisma color markers that will kill me.
So like I said before I'm just asking for $2-$3 donations from everyone. if I get like 10 of you doing that I'll be set... and once I do reach my goal I'll update this journal IMMEDIATELY..
I'm still very uncomfortable asking for handouts and I feel pretty awful doing so.

Thank you all so much. You guys really did help me out in a pinch.
I just need to ask for $50 more ( and I will cut off the donation request at that point.. I feel really uncomfortable taking any more than that) But like I said guys... just $2-$3 donations.. like 15 of you donating like $3 a piece would be awesome.

AWA and Roster Update of Pure Awesome

I've never actually simply just "visited" a con before. But it was quite fun. But I found myself in the same place I usually am. The Artist's Alley lol. The only place I'm really actually interested in. If it weren't for the art in the furry fandom, and the artists alley at anime cons, I would NEVER go and would NEVER be in the fandom.
So I took my little tote back of artfolios, sketchbooks, and sketching materials and drove over to the Cobb Galleria, registered and made my way to the artists alley X3.
I was there around 8 am to get in line for registration so I was a little tired but still excited. I knew I was going to see a lot of people I knew. And I brought just enough cash to do so.
The big slice of awesome
meglyman was there at her own table selling her wares. It was so cool to see someone who quite possibly had the most unique and most adventurous selection of art ( one of the many reasons I admire her work) getting so appreciated. She allowed me to come to her table back and forth during the con and rest me and my little tote back there. It was really cool.
In the mean time, when we met in the morning, and while I was prepared to pay for a sketch in my sketchbook she said "how about a sketch trade?" Amazingly flattered I gladly obliged. She is now the proud owner of a cephalopod (spelling?) BraveOne heehee. I also now have quite possibly one of the most adorable pics in existance of Sake Woozle waving at a little squid in the water. heeheeheee.
So I made my way around and found people who had been at my first con ( people like Dizziness http://dizziness.deviantart.com/ ) Danny Valentini ( of 2wconline.net ) and of course my brother (kuroitora.deviantart.com )
Danny was kind enough to accept a commission from me at the con and so now I have an awesome sketch from him that he REALLY went the extra mile on in my sketchbook.
tamarik managed to find me lurking around Danny's table and had commissioned me to draw in his sketchbook ( again, it's really flattering to get recognized at a con and then get asked for a sketch commission while i'm not even set up) So I was happy to oblige to earn a few extra bucks.

So I returned to home base ( meglyman's table ) and pestered her more about art and what not. Bless her for putting up with me. But we were able to talk shop, color anatomy, etc. She was so nice :3

Goodbye to a Friend/ Help a Friend/ UPDATES MY FRIENDS!

This has certainly been a most eventful few days eh?
First thing I need to point out is something that was very important.. at least to me.
neogeen brought to my attention that Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary had passed away. To really put a knot in my heart and tears to my eyes she linked me to this.

While most of us, if we breath air, eat food, and sleep on occasion would get all watery eyed because of this song. I have a very specific reason even now as to why.
Before I was born.. in fact while I was in the making ( summer of 1985) My mother, when she was a reporter, interviewed Mary. Toward the end of the interview my mom had revealed that she was pregnant with her first child ( again just in case you didn't know, that's me) And Mary had revealed that she was pregnant too. So my mom and Mary became friends and started talking to each other on a regular basis, mail and phone calls and what not. Essentially coaching my mom through soon-to-be parenthood.
Then I was born. Peter, Paul and Mommy too! was released a year or so later. And so it didn't really hit me until I was sixteen that the person that mom would put me on the phone with when i was 3 and 4, who would sing and everything for me was her.
So while we've been ever so distracted with talkshows and what seems to be so important int he world of TV, we lost someone who really put a lot of good in this world. I lost the person who introduced me to lullabies, my mom lost a good friend, and the world lost something about it that really made it shine.
So I do hope you all at least take the time to give your attention from you busy lives for a moment of silence, or a time to think well on someone who deserves well.
Because when I think of the music her and her, Peter and Paul would sing, I get yet another opportunity to smile.

Well unfortunately tonight I am filled with fail.
I worked a double shift at work and ended up driving around a whole lot after work. Not to mention getting very little sleep. I just don't want to draw while I'm as wiped out as I am now. I can't really promise really good quality work. But when I return from AWA tomorrow I shall get a few images colored and knock out the one for that I've been looking forward too :3 ( He asked for a doozie... and I look forward to it with almost tantric anticipation)

General | Posted 16 years agoI'm sooo strangely giddy. I downloaded an old recording of Rhapsody in Blue and it's conducted by George Gershwin. I actually really love the song a whole lot. Something about it makes me wish i had an apartment in downtown Manhattan that overlooked the city. An art desk that sat next to a window and I could see the lights at the bottom flood the night :3
Ironically I'm just as big of a fan of the stars at night in Cape Cod while on the beach...

General | Posted 16 years agoSeriously, just got done watching some of the behind the scenes for "Sleeping Beauty" and now I want to art sooooo hard.
Seriously guys, one of the things that reeaaaly inspires me is watching those.
After watching the behind the scenes in "101 Dalmations" has lead me to the way I draw now. I typically work out backgrounds with blocks of color. I've also sketched first, colored second, then inked, to results that I personally find rather satisfying.
Now after watching the "Sleeping Beauty" behind the scenes I want to do a lot of different painterly color work. Probably going to screw around in photoshop after I get my quota of commissions done. :3

General | Posted 16 years agoSo today's theme was A.D.D. and I was particularly unproductive today sans a doodle of my "real body"
I sooo wanted to draw more today but unfortunately it seemed like one thing lead to another lead to another and kept me from actually getting to work. Sorry guys!
I'll crack that whip on myself tomorrow! I think my only major event is going to the school and giving my lecture. and I's former teacher requested I come in and inspire the students to be a lot more enthusiastic about their field.
While in public school, it's true, you can't very well be enthusiastic about every little thing that's taught to you. Most of the time you just grit your teeth and bare with it. But when you're in college and you're getting into a field ( not to mention paying to be there) not showing up for class and a lack of enthusiasm isn't going to help you at all. You're in college, you're too old to be doing the "Too cool" thing. It's a little embarrassing.
Since I was one of those students that was not only good at what they were doing, I absolutely loved it, she's bringing me in to talk to them about it.... so wish me luck!

Addendums/Thank Yous/ Roster Updates

It seems to me that my last entry made quite an impression on quite a few people! For the most part I think I got the message across. Of course in an entry that is designed to help prevent conflict ... it's bound to attract conflict XP
But I'd like to bring up some highlights that I think were spectacular additions within the comments.
( For reference, here was my last journal http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/924810/ Artists Vs. Customers )
and 
brought up excellent points. To surmise I will state here.
Yes artists are humans too, like people who would stiff an artist on payment, there are artists who stiff on work. I don't have a squeaky clean record and I've been jipped on art before as well.
So, do a little research! There are good lj communities that discuss this type of thing. Ask around see what's up. It's not a bad thing before you start flinging money at people. You want to make sure you see some return!
Now both and go into depth regarding this issue and have a good deal of good advice to say on it so please do peruse the comments!
brought up an excellent point regarding copyright.
Copyright issues can and do arise especially if you the customer intend on using someone esle's work for profit, and the artist, someone else's character for portfolio uses. It can be a sticky situation. Make sure that it is made apperant, the intentions of the commission if said goal is to be made. Also, not all countries copyright laws are uniform so do a little digging to make sure you know what's going on!
These are however just some of the points brought up. There were a lot of very very good ones beyond the ones I have just mentioned so go give a look! We have some bright people in the fandom, I'm just lucky enough to attract a good portion of them :3
I do wish to say however that I was not attempting to stand from a soap box and look down upon the masses. A lot of what I spoke from was 6-7 years of making mistakes in regards to commissions and art. I've since done professional work and have helped teach it. So I was hoping to provide what little perspective I've gained in the last few years.

Also I wanted to thank you all. I've actually gone over 1000 watchers. And while I said yes it is a statistic, it's really cool that so many of you are interested in what I have to contribute to the community in either terms of art or journals. So seriously, thank you guys.
I most certainly didn't start the whole idea of doing a whole bunch of commissions for cheap, but I did end up starting this whole mess of challenging 100 people to commission you.
So with that contribution and what seems to be a fairly decent journal entry regarding this I feel somewhat accomplished * beams*

On another note, my good buddy Ryan was awesome enough to go digging into the depths of my interests and found the Motown 25 celebration on DVD. This has Michael Jackson's historical debut of his version of the moonwalk. ( I say this because other people were doing it before hand.. thanks
) I actually looove old Motown music and have quite a collection of it so that was spectacular.
I've also been asked by my old mentor from the Art Institute to go to one of her classes and help teach the new set of chillins why the history of animation is so important when getting into animation as an industry. Kind of falls into "loving your craft." I'm still remarkably flattered by this and I do look forward to going in. :3
