Merry Christmas!
Posted 2 years agoIt's that time of year again. It's been a long 12 months, huh? If it's been a difficult year for you as it has been for me, now that we can get to spend time with our families and friends without the clouds hanging over everything, coming together to share company and have a good time, we can enjoy life with the knowledge that whatever happened this year is done with, and new things are on the horizon. Tomorrow, I'll be hanging with my guests and unapologetically eating roast ham, snacks and diabetes-tastic desserts with reckless abandon to celebrate along with my family who have been through a lot. The spirit of Christmas is joy, so let's be joyous and grateful for making it through 2023.
So, whoever you are, whatever kind of year you've had; you've had ups, you've had downs, new things might have made you excited, other things might have stayed the same. Nobody knows what comes next, but you're still here. You've handled the trials life threw at you this year, if you keep going then nothing can prevent you from making the most of the New Year and getting to a better place if there's things that could improve.
To all my watchers and everyone else, I wish you all the best. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, spend it with those you care about, or if you can't or you'll be on your own on the day, spend it with yourself and be proud of making it here. <3

Posted 3 years agoI hope you all spend it in the best way you can. ๐
No matter where you're from, what you're doing, if things are going good or bad, or whether or not you're religious. A lot of the time Christmas is about gifts and appreciation for many of us. So, I think it's a good idea to celebrate the best gift of all: life.
Take some time to just slow down. Enjoy yourself, and maybe spend the day giving yourself the time you need to look at how far you've come, what you've accomplished to be here at the close of another year, and appreciate what you have. Even if you wish for more, even if you want things to be different. This Christmas and in the new year, give yourself another 12 months and make them good, fill them with good things, make yourself happy, care for yourself and be patient, and care for the people around you who you love. But most of all don't forget to love yourself. Life's about your journey toward fulfilment and better things, and it's what I hope for the most for everybody.
We're all in it together. I hope you all spend this Christmas and the New Year living your best lives. ๐

Upload policy update (AI)
Posted 3 years agoFellas... You can't label yourself as progressive site owners who care about your community and then field the argument that "AI generated art isn't in your best interest to host on FA".
Why? What are you scared of bro? Do you also realise that people have to write AIs? Do you realise that they're useless without human input? Do you realise that programing-wise, AI itself is a work of creativity and someone has to make it work? It shows your ignorance of the technology if you know that and still conclude it's a threat to you. The argument for banning it is just a flimsy cop-out to hide your irrational fear of helpful change and new things because you don't actually understand them.
Furry artists aren't going to be displaced by neural networks. AI doesn't work like that and won't any time in your lifetime, real life isn't like a sci-fi movie. It can't replace human originality or creative agency either. All it can do is imitate real art. You can't tell an AI to create the next Mona Lisa, all you can do is tell it to copy Da Vinci. You're like the people who clung to horses and looked the other way with terror whenever a motorcar drove past your old timey saloon. "That thar AI is gon' put me outta a jorb!"
Why would it? You can just filter it out, you can tag it and blacklist it, you can even give it its own category. The craziest thing though? You can just ignore it and choose not to see it as a problem. Imagine that! But no, that would be too much work and you would have to swallow your ego to admit your views about it are flawed. Can't let a good opportunity for grandstanding melodrama go to waste. It's not like it's a machine that creates a furry porn Gesamtkunstwerk that can't be challenged by a human artist. You literally have nothing to be scared of, stop being a child.
AI is just a tool, and one that can help us, and it will collectively help the creative arts more than you ever will, if you're sitting here pretending you're a stoic activist for the poor down-trodden commission artist who's about to be made obsolete.
Please get over yourself and stop sensationalising this issue, it's an embarassing way to think and behave and you should educate yourself so you know better.

The 5 best movies of the last 20 years (recommendation li...
Posted 3 years agoI feel compelled to write out this journal partly as a "please PLEASE experience these treats" PSA, and also to throw shade on the flaming rotten garbage cookie-cutter blockbuster industry of today that's stuffed to the brim with uninspired, unthoughtful, risk-less cash grabs that all suck eachothers dicks and are to the artform of cinema what big macs are to the world of restaurant food. That is to say, they aren't even worthy of being in the same category as eachother and are embarrassments. (I'm looking at you, Marvel universe and all the IMAX turds that have slithered from your asshole). I want to throw you five movies that just absolutely put it all to shame.
It's easy to get into territory where I'll sound like some Reddit snob or attention seeking film student on YouTube, so it needs to be said that these are just some movies I enjoy and that I feel genuinely stand out, and this list is my own opinion and nothing more. You might ENJOY the category of entertainment that I just insulted, and if you do that's okay. But I really do think you should experience the following if not for their own sake then at least to see something different on your screen:
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1340800/ ]
Ooh, I know, it looks bad to start with this, a 2 hour long thriller that variously gets panned as a snorefest by critics and audiences who can't focus long enough to get to the part where it says "cold war" in the plot summary. There are slow burns, and then there is this movie, but I really do think that it has a character that you don't see a lot to it. After all, it's about spies, it's about MI5, it's about Russians, it's about secret agents, it's about moles and codenames and black books and assassinations and black ops and all that buzzword stuff. The difference is that the 2 hours is not wasted and it sucks you into a world of romanticised cloak and dagger secrecy that really has you thinking about what's going on the whole time, and not a second is ill-spent. Give it a chance.
4. The Assassination Of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford (2007) [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443680/ ]
I have 3 things to say about this movie that I feel are not only important but outstanding and significant compared to all other Westerns. Firstly, this movie is a Western that defies the tropes of the genre completely. It has train robberies, it has shootouts, it has character arcs and "heroes" and "villains". But none are what they seem. Brad Pitt plays a villainous and classically immoral Jesse James, and his character completely subverts the popular image you might have of him as the penny dreadful hero who robbed banks and held up on the railroad to give to the poor like some kind of folk hero. Secondly, Roger Deakins behind the camera makes the whole film look like a fucking dream. Timelapses, lens techniques, long shots, landscapes, mood-setting, all of it is stuff I've never seen before or since, and the way some things are executed is completely unique to this movie. Just take a look at the thumbnail for its trailer on IMDB and that says it all. Thirdly and lastly, the tragedy of it all. The biggest achievement of this film is that it makes you feel something unexpected. It makes you feel anger toward a man who killed a career criminal who murdered, raped and pillaged the post-civil war United States and who ultimately did it all in pure selfishness. It makes you question if that at the end of the day what is legal justice in black-and-white is not moral justice, and vice versa. It's in the title of the movie: the *assassination*, not "murder" of Jesse James, by the "coward", not *hero*.
3. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2278388/ ]
Leave it to someone like Wes Anderson, the guy who makes movies that are composed in odd aspect ratios with pop-up storybook shots, whose direction is bursting with eccentric characters and meticulous colour palettes, to actually make a movie which is a fairytale book that may as well be titled "once upon a time, in Europe". I remember posting another journal saying to watch this movie, so I'll just copy-paste what I think from that. "It's always like a painting, it's always changing, and always beautiful. The entire film is a hilarious, charismatic, colourful, playful masterpiece with great characters and organic synergy between them. The movie takes place in a country that doesn't exist, in a time that's lost forever, from a period of history that only survives in old photo albums and dusty filmreels, but you still feel overwhelming charm and nostalgia and it makes you want to jump into its world. It's like a storybook."
2. The Big Short (2015) [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596363 ]
Yeah, yeah, I'll get it out of the way right here and now. Reddit bought this movie into the spotlight with all that gamestop stock shit and ruined it, and everyone who watched it suddenly thought they were a stock market whizz and trading up-and-comer, and took a dump in the process. You might have seen clips of it from YouTube channels, you might have seen people on 4chan and Reddit to this day parroting its highly caricatured judgements about finance and all the bad things it's led to over the years. This movie has that stigma attached to it, but if you abandon that for a minute and look at it on its own merits, it's one of those comedies which just does something different to the crowd. I mean, come on, it's a movie about BANKERS and STOCKBROKERS that's FUNNY and not a drama about how much everybody fucked up and jumped off of buildings or went to prison. Well, I mean it kinda is, but it's a black comedy. It makes light of very serious things but it introduces the uninitiated viewer into a world that's mostly hidden from us in the middle class and working class, the inside of a room where people with trading portfolios like dictionaries throw hundreds of millions of dollars around like it's candy wrappers. The Big Short is ultimately about how something that should be an industry that services our world, helps us afford homes, deal in credit, build futures, and keeps us afloat ultimately has the power to sink us, and not just sink the bankers but sink the people who have to work two jobs and sleep in their cars to afford to raise a child. It's about the 2008 housing crisis, and that is absolutely nothing to be joked about in the real world. However, if you like black comedies which deal in the taboo, you will like this movie. It doesn't censor itself, it doesn't water down the very alien setting it takes place in, it explains what it needs to and indulges you in the rest, its characters are captivating, human, relatable, funny, and full of... uhh... character. As much as cynical hedge fund dudes can be that is. Give it a chance. Even if you hate it you'll genuinely learn a thing or two about securities.
1. The Tree Of Life (2011) [ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478304 ]
The only movie in about 20 years that made me cry at one point. If you are questioning of things like the meaning of our time on this planet, the depth and breadth of our lives, the significance of our upbringing, the way we look on and treat those close to us, our rolemodels and our enemies, our relationships and the harmony we have to strike between ourselves and our environment in order to live life, the nature of faith and where it comes from, and conversely the cold and brutal nature of the world outside of what our teachings can prepare us for, then this movie might make you cry too. I don't think there is another film like this in existence that isn't a documentary. There's a sequence where a character who is of deep faith berates God for allowing tragedy to happen in her life, and we are then shown an awe-inspiring sequence which follows the creation of the entire Universe from stars and galaxies, to the formation of Earth, to volcanoes and fire, to bacteria, to dinosaurs, and beyond, all to make a statement about what loss really means in the grand scope of things. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable watching this movie, and you must do that in order to experience and appreciate the unparalleled journey that it offers, then that isn't the only time during watching it that it will drive a stake straight through your heart and hurt you. It's an entire life time compressed down into a watchable format, with all of the joy and sorrow and happiness and despair and loss and success and the infinite change and unpredictability which drives it all constantly happening around every corner. There's really nothing to describe the feeling it gave me at the end. I've never seen anything like it before or since, and everybody I've showed it to has had the same reaction. It pummels your fucking soul and makes you feel like hugging someone you care about, because they won't be here forever and time is a limited resource.
In closing, I just want to reiterate and encourage you to give each of these movies a chance. If one of them is just not your kettle of fish, so be it. At least you have one more entry on your list of "things I know I don't like". That's really sort of the way you discover the hidden gems, the world of movies is so much bigger than what's showing at the cinema. This is just five that I've found that outshined everything else for me, go discover what 5 movies that might be for you. Peruse the top films lists on IMDB, go visit /tv/ on 4chan, go look on Reddit, ask friends what they've seen, google "movies about subject". You don't have to be constrained to what a ticket can buy you, and many of the best watches of the new millennium are things you might not even have heard of. Broaden your horizons and please, PLEASE never buy another seat at a superhero movie. Let them die already.

Upgrade acquired!
Posted 3 years agoFirst of all, thanks for all the engagement with my recent uploads! I'm coming off of a hiatus from art that's gone on for, what, a year at this point? Maybe longer? Getting back into the swing for a couple of days has been really nice, and the pictures seem to be well recieved so I'm happy I've tickled at least someone's fancy with all my bullshit!
Drawing again has made me realise one important thing though. I'm at my most comfortable doing digital art on my phone using my finger, *because it has a screen*. My Wacom doesn't, and I feel like it's held me back for a long time because I can't see what I'm doing with my hands. With that in mind I splurged and got a tablet with a display.
Now, it's going to be a big gear shift for me going from Autodesk Sketchbook to something like Sai, but now that the biggest obstacle to improvement is gone I'll have a much easier time adjusting to the new work flow, I think. I was never very good with Sai though, so bare with me as I suck a lot of dick with it for a while.
Congratulations, you made it to the end of the journal! Here's a Taco Bell coupon because you're a neato burrito.

The somewhat sad world of online friendships
Posted 3 years agoIt's great how in the modern age, you can know somebody for over a decade through just a screen, being the best of friendsโtalking most days, confiding in eachother and being mutually supportive, shooting the shit and having good times, the same way an offline friendship would work.
But then they stop talking. A day comes by when you notice that it's been months since you heard from your friend, and the last news they gave you was that they're very sick and heading to hospital. The funny part is how thanks to technology we can build these meaningful and rewarding relationships with people that make life awesome without ever physically being in their company. The sad part is that sometimes unlike an offline friendship, we can't just head over to their house, catch them at a shop or out and about, call up their brother or sister, neighbour, or anyone else to find out how they're doing and tell them we care and that we're worried.

Crypto and furries
Posted 4 years agoI keep seeing this funny phenomenon of fully grown, financially independent adults on furry Twitter just absolutely melting down, screaming at their followers and lashing out, attempting to dunk on both crypto and all of the things it has spawned in recent years. Raising desperate false arguments like "crypto is a scam", "it's bad for the environment", "imagine paying obscene money for a digital picture", etc, like crypto is the worst thing since the plague. Like, is that where we are at, really, furry fandom? Do better. It really amuses me hearing "fuck NFTs" coming from the back of the class in the same community who defend 6000 dollar YCHs and have a thriving artistic culture where people buy and trade characters and art. It's actually quite sad when I stop giggling at it. To those people, if I'm unlucky enough to be watched by you, are you sure that yelling at people on Twitter who are too busy making money, investing, forming startups or getting rich to even notice you exist is really worth it? Crypto isn't going away, it's thriving and growing, so you need to start learning to be comfortable rather than angry about that. I guaruntee that these "cryptobros" and monkey pictures you post about every day and try to get everyone around you to hate with your psychotic ranting spend 0 hours and 0 minutes of their lives thinking about you. Do something better with your time and stop being immature, start learning to be emotionally resilient and at least try to understand the things you hate more than a 5 minute skim through of a YouTube video or a callout post.
Merry Christmas + Here's to another year
Posted 4 years agoSo it's Christmas. Yay, socks and chocolates and deodorant from family members, drinking with the boys, and don't forget the gift cards you can't go and use because of covid tyranny closing all the stores lmao
Joking aside, this year's been another tough trial. Life's full of tests and 2021 was ridiculous. But it went great for me in spite of that. Struggle is what makes us stronger and defeating it to live your life happily is the best reward you can ever have at the end of a bad time. I feel better than ever, despite having to deal with illness and surgery, despite the world accelerating faster toward the collapse, despite all the trouble and hardships, and despite the uncertainty there's still so much goodness in life. I'm so glad to be surrounded by my family and my friends, have love in my life, be growing and honing myself, and thanks to living to my values in a principled and meaningful way, I'm optimistic and confident in myself. I'm happy, but these days happiness seems like it's harder and harder to find. This is one time of the year when you can always find that positivity and reinforcement, and where can you always find those things? In yourself and those around you, no matter how bad things might have been, and no matter how desperately evil and bad people try to suck it out of the World.
Care for yourself, enjoy Christmas this year, spend it with people who matter to you, and spread joy. :>

What an interesting week.
Posted 4 years agoHad my birthday, had a heck of a time. Got FC6 to play on PS4, spent lots of time playing Tarkov and other games with buddies, had some nice food, then I went in to get a lil something looked at by a doctor and got rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. Pure misery and pain. Just got home now and I feel like shit, but boy did the last 7 days go by at mach 2.5

Doodles and sketches!
Posted 4 years agoI have been feeling more artistic the past few weeks and will be getting back into art. Gotta relearn lots and find my rhythm again, bare with me ;w;
But, from now on all sketchy doodles and stuff will be in scraps unless I digitise or colour them. This is because in the future from now my gallery will be used for finished works only, or commissions.
I have more of both coming! ๐

Movie recommendation
Posted 4 years agoThe Grand Budapest Hotel.
TL;DR if you want a funny movie that isn't a traditional comedy, but happens to be an enchanting story which fills itself with charming eccentricity while keeping you laughing and fixated on the world the script goes on inside of, watch this movie.
Just, wow, holy shit for a long list of reasons. First, the cinematography. The symmetry in shots, the robotic camera movements, sneaky microdirecting shining through and the switching between aspect ratios to evoke different time periods. Film nerds know the name Wes Anderson for a reason. Second, the colour palette. Purple, pastel, warm and inviting, you name it. It's always like a painting, it's always changing, and always beautiful.
It's like a storybook.
Just go watch it, you won't be disappointed. I promise
