Art Pile Shipping- Do you have art from Flinters?
Posted 7 years agoI'm working with
brooklynx to ship out all pending art from people with piles of traditional art waiting to be shipped. Some of you folks have art dating back several years and waiting to be shipped because you wanted to wait and combine shipping on multiple pieces, but then fell by the way side or forgot.
We'll be reaching out to people with art in the files. If you believe you have art waiting to be shipped, let me know through flinters at the gmail place, or a note here on FA. Email is preferred as that is easier to track.
It's time to combine and ship stuff out, so let's do this thing.

Friday Night Stream: $25 traditional speed sketches
Posted 7 years agoI am old.
My muzzle is grey, my hair is thinning, and I like to take naps.
I am also slow.
Used to be that I could do 10 sketches in a stream no problem. I have slowed down and I keep adding details and shading even on what is supposed to be a speed sketch. I have real problems in restricting myself to a set level. I see speed sketches by artists I admire and love the loose organic feel to them. So very like the sketchbooks we would draw in at cons. I really want to redevelop my loose speed sketch skills and regain that loose magical feel.
So I need to really work on controlling what I do in a sketch. Limit it, keep the feel of tbe pic, enjoy the loose light touch. The benefit of this is getting more work done for more people, while improving my speed for normal shaded and color commissions.
Friday night, $25 single character speed commissions targeted at 30 minutes on traditional cardstock. If you want the original shipped, there is additional shipping involved. If the character is complicated, there may be an additional fee.
Help me speed up. I normally get 6 pics done in a stream. Rarely I can do 8. Can I get back to 10 in a night like I did years ago? Let's find out. 7 pm PT Friday, www.tigerdile.com/stream/flinters (now simulcast on Picarto!)

The Way to Popularity
Posted 7 years agoWho are you?
With so many new people coming into the fandom, the Big Names have come and gone. So many of us 'greymuzzles' were known names of years past, but the new people coming in have no idea who we are. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is harsh case of humility to acknowledge you aren't what you once were. You can't rely on your name or even reputation to carry you on. It's a case of nice knowing you did nice art that was popular in the past, but what have you done lately?
So many new artists in the genre that are fantastic. I mean so good I could never hope to get to that level, but that's good too. I have my own thing and people like it. Unfortunately a lot of the new people in the fandom have no idea who any of use greymuzzles are. I'm active! I have over 4,000 pictures here on FA. I've done comics, been at cons, run conventions, been guest of honor at two even. But ask the average current fan and they would have no idea who Flinters is.
Now this can actually *harm* you as a professional or veteran artist and dealer. Conventions now judge the applications and they look for people that will match the needs of their attendees. You need name recognition, lots of followers, active art being posted, and just lots and lots of eyeballs knowing who you are. Those conventions might recognize you, but more often a new dealer coordinator has no idea about you and they simply aren't going to take the time to investigate every application. Marketing yourself is important. While I actively stream art on Tigerdile, it's the same dozen or so people that watch. They know who I am, but few others do.
So how do you fix this? Getting rejected by conventions with generic table declined emails stating you should work on improving your art skills, better display, etc, is disheartening, especially for someone whom has been doing dealer rooms for 20 years now. I can't get upset at cons with new coordinators that just don't know you. They fill the room with the names they know, the people they know, friends and so on. So you need to find a way to get noticed.
NAME RECOGNITION.
Sadly, it may be time to start advertising with banner ads. I don't need more business- I mean I like it, but I'm not lacking a steady stream of business when I want it. But that's a limited group of customers and does nothing to improve name recognition. I need to get my name out there more and more so that people have a clue whom Flinters is. Banner ads on FA, silly things that tell a story or something. Get the name and character out there. Might have to put in some art for convention program guides, but even I don't bother looking at those either at the con or afterwards.
Where do you go to get your name seen? FA ads are about all that I can think of at the moment.
Also, I like mint.

Anthro Northwest SEATTLE
Posted 8 years agoI'll be at Anthro Northwest this weekend, so no Friday night stream, I'm afraid. I will be doing lots of art the following week for HomeCon, so be ready for that.
If you're in the Seattle area, Anthro Northwest (www.anthronw.org) is happening this weekend in downtown Seattle. First year con, clean / PG only, and will be a curious experience to see how that works out. I'll have my laminated badges there and will bring my digital drawing setup and printing so I can make custom badges as well.

Flinters Picture Channel on Telegram!
Posted 8 years agoGot a dedicated Telegram channel for posting art, works in progress, silly doodles and so on. Stuff that doesn't get to FA because I don't usually post rough sketches here as much. If you're interested, it's an announcement only stream, so low traffic.

YCH Open Commissions Wednesday Night 6 PM PT
Posted 8 years agoI'm going to open up for five slots on YCH commissions here on FA. These are not auctions, but instead fixed price based on the finish level you want. It will be first come first serve when the individual images are posted. All images will be posted starting at 6 PM PT on 9/20 here on FA.
ONE YCH PER PERSON. Sorry, can't have one person buying them all up. I want more people to have access to art they might not otherwise be able to get.
YCH Sample Page
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/24844636/
Finish Levels:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/24844581/
$25 Speed Sketch
$35 Shaded Sketch
$45 Monocolor
$75 Full Color
You can see exactly what is being offered with the links above.
HOW IT WORKS:
When the YCH comes up that you are interested in, comment in that submission with your request along with finish level, rating, and reference. I will pick the first person posting and go over the reference. If it all works for me, I'll go ahead and do up the picture accordingly and advise you of the finished files in email / FA Note. Payment when the commission is accepted, with funds going to flinters at the Gmail place via Paypal. If you have questions, please ask.
This is an experiment. If it works, I hope to do this frequently to make commissions available outside of my normal stream night.
Good luck, and be ready at 6 PM PT on 9/20!

I'll miss you, Adam West
Posted 8 years agoAdam West personified the very core of a cartoon super hero as TV's live action Batman. His goofy and over the top acting was perfect to the role and excelled in it. The campy performance set a standard many have aspired to.
Even when his career was seemingly over and he toured the comic book conventions, he never lost that magical goofiness. With Family Guy he brought the sparkle back to the screen as the mayor of Qouhog, using his real name which is unheard of.
He embraced the role, the character, and his position as the epitome of camp.
Rest well, good hero. You made a difference.
RIP Adam West, age 88.

Are comments a passing fad?
Posted 8 years agoI have noticed in lastb6 months that the number of comments a picture gets has dropped a lot. What used to get 15-20 now rarely hits 10 comments. Some really good pieces I spend a lot of time on might get 1-5 comments. And then about 1 in 4 pieces gets no comments at all.
What is happening?
It is not just me, as I see it on many artists I follow. It is like people have just stopped posting their thoughts.
Artists are very vain and ego driven. I know, I am one. We live through your feeding our ego food pellets. Let artists know what you like about a piece. Colors, line work, pose, subject, or how you like the way the character holds their pinky out while boning their partner.
Feedback. We need the food pellets.
Feed your favorite artists!
UPDATE:
Your comments below have been greatly appreciated. I enjoy seeing the interaction and observations being made. Some points brought up I had not considered has opened up my mind to different viewpoints.
Thank you!

You were there when no one else was.

TIGERDILE HOMECON! FRIDAY
Posted 9 years agoI'm live with a $25 speed sketch challenge on Tigerdile. You provide the character and rating, and I'll do a wingit of interesting pose and concept. Or cheese. Depends how hungry I am.
I really want to get 10 done. I've been slowing down on the speed sketches, so I need to really push hard to stick to the 30 minute limit. Can I do it?

Friday night Stream Theme: CANDY BUZZ HANGOVER 7 pm pst
Posted 9 years agoUuuuuugh. Did I really eat ALL that candy? I mean, sure, not a lot of kids visited on Halloween, so I had to dispose of all that candy in a responsible manner, right?
*burp*
Oh man, too much. Way too much. Still, there is still that bag of mint over there. Surely one more won't hurt?

3500 Pictures
Posted 9 years ago3500. That's a lot of art. I never would have guessed I'd have drawn literally thousands and thousands of pictures since drawing regularly in 1995, but it sure adds up. It's the streaming that really has kicked it into high gear. It used to be 10-15 a month was considered 'busy', but now I'm doing 6-10 each weekly stream. That means 30+ a month or more is more the norm instead of the exception. If there is a con that month, then it can easily be 50-60 pics for that month.
Dang.
And it shows in the style. You can only get better in drawing by DOING IT. Develop that muscle memory. Get used to drawing the shapes without concentrating on them. Start working on details instead of basic shapes. Gain confidence in your skills so that you know that you can draw it even before you start, seeing the new stuff as an interesting challenge to try out instead of dreading or worrying that you'll fail.
Go ahead and try it. Doodle. Keep at it. And just like in Math class, show your work.

Did Flinters stop posting art?
Posted 9 years agoHah! Me stop posting art? RIDICULOUS!
No, wait, I did. Sorry, not intentional. Just so busy creating art and a couple of cons kept me busy for the last couple of months. I just got done scanning 80+ pieces and that doesn't count stuff done at cons. In other words...
PREPARE FOR THE FLOOD.

Art Flood INBOUND!
Posted 9 years agoI had been building up a bunch of pics to upload from Tigerdile streams before FA had its hiccup and then I was also busy with BLFC so there's TON of art to upload. Around 50 pieces. I was... productive.
Don't like art floods? No worries, delete them. You can always look later. I won't feel offended.
OKAY I WILL BE HORRIBLY OFFENDED AND WILL DROWN MY SORROWS IN HOSTESS TWINKIES. Naaaah, no mint Twinkies, but they did have some Hostess mint DingDongs last winter I tried.

Friday Night Stream - $25 SPEED SKETCHES
Posted 9 years agoStarting at 7 PM PT I'll be offering cheap $25 30 minute speed sketches on Tigerdile. Since so many people are off at TFF this weekend, I'll offer the convention speed sketches here on Tigerdile since I didn't go to TFF. So many of our regular Tigerdile streamers and customers are also at TFF that it should open up a lot of slots for easy commissions tonight.
$25 speed sketch, single character. Line work with cell style base speed shading, not soft shaded like the $35 work I do other nights. The goal is to get as many people taken care of as I can so we don't leave anyone out if I can avoid it.

Zootopia: Opening Night - SEE THIS
Posted 9 years agoIt's a high speed fantastic adventure set in a world that is so complete that you don't even pay attention. When the world is so well done that you don't notice, you've succeeded. A story that isn't preachy, doesn't have song and dance, and doesn't rely on comedy- well, you wonder if you're actually watching a Disney film or not. There is no borrowed classic storyline. It's all new. No retelling here. Just a really good adventure. The amount of background details, gags, parodies and more are not shoved in your face, but are there if you look for them. This is a movie you'll be pausing a lot to catch all the fun.
There are 68 species in the film. The otters are small and long with short legs. Wolves are highly susceptible to howling and similar canine traits. Even Nick Wilde, the fox, is a rather short and slight character by comparison with short legs. It all *works* in this world. Nothing is pushed at you. You accept it as you would any normal non-animated movie because you're drawn into the plot and meat of the story. It keeps ending, then picking up because just when you thought it ended, there's more and you learn everything you knew was wrong.
This will be the new movie that furry fans can point non-fans at and say "I like this type of art like in that movie Zootopia." It's not sexual. The gazelle singer is about as sexy as any Superbowl halftime show, and they make fun of that in a good way.
Damn, I cannot say how much I like this movie. I don't go off normally about any film, but this is one you do not want to wait long to see. It has had little to no advertising so it should be easy to get to a showing, or as I will, for several. I was in the first showing of the film at the theatre and I'll be going back.
Put your paws in the air for ZOOTOPIA!
