Posted 13 years agoLast night on 2's show, the brd raised a couple points that seemed to get folks all riled up. I’d like to discuss them a bit.
1. Birth Control and other contraceptives
The issue at hand here, if I understand it without doing any external research, is whether a woman’s birth control should be funded/supplied by her employer or school. Some people are upset because they believe that a woman would want this for the sole purpose of having sex, and they believe that sex is not a good reason for an employer to give out money.
However, birth control also provides an important medical need to many women, who develop painful ovarian cysts without the hormonal stability that the pills provide. In these cases, they become more like vital medicine, which can be very expensive when not covered by insurance.
In last night’s show, 2 used the example of the woman (whose name I forget) who seems to be at the forefront of the fight. He said that this particular woman did not appear credible, and that her claim of needing the pills for medical reasons was probably a load of bullshit. I think people misinterpreted this, and thought that 2 meant that ALL medical claims of this nature were bullshit.
My opinion: regardless of the intended purpose for the pills, medical or otherwise, they should be dealt with in the same manner as any other substance. If your employer/college provides for any medication (especially Viagra, as I've heard does happen in some cases), it should also provide for birth control. It shouldn’t be cost-prohibitive to decide to do such a simple and common thing to your own body.
2. Hunting
The issue here was whether it is morally wrong to hunt wild animals, even for food. 2 believes that it is, but made a poor analogy to hunting one’s grandmother. The bluntness got many folks upset, and they missed the point that he was trying to make- that animal life should be no less cherished or sacred than human life.
My opinion: Killing is wrong. Meat is tasty. We, as a species, are never going to stop eating meat. If there were a such thing as synthetic meat, we would (hopefully) just eat that instead of killing at all. But since we haven’t yet invented a satisfactory synthetic meat, the closest thing we have are stock; born and bred to BE meat. Sure, it’s awful how they are treated while they are alive, that always has room for improvement. But it’s no excuse to go out and turn something into meat which was never meant to be YOUR meat. Leave it alone, mother nature knows what she’s doing.
And if you’re hunting animals for reasons other than food, fuck you. Just shut the fuck up. It’s all well and good to have guns. Go have your guns. 2nd amendment and all that bullshit. Shoot at targets, shoot at trees, shoot at the ground, shoot at people who are shooting at you, I don’t even care. But there is NO good reason for you to shoot at an innocent life with the intention to kill it. You want sport? Go compete against a fellow human being, who can consent to the activity and participate in it without losing their life. *grumbles about football*
As for overpopulation, in species like white-tailed deer- I feel like it’s our fault that they’ve gotten that way, because we hunted the predators who were keeping their numbers in check. Instead of us trying to take on that role of hunter, with a few samples at specific times during the year, we should instead take a more involved role in conservation- make the predatory species stronger and more populous, and plant more forest space for them to spread out in, instead of forcing the deer to invade on our developments where they’ll get run over.

I draw a character. With any luck it's original enough that you like it. Maybe it's well-drawn, maybe I'm not that great. I then take this original character, and change its color scheme several times, and lay out all the variations on a sheet.

Not usually. You'd have to catch me in a good mood at an art jam, or be somebody I like with a cool character.

Yeah, especially if I like your stuff a lot! I'm pretty good in the 2D Art/Badges department right now, so I'm not LOOKING for those... but if you do something custom, crafted, or handmade, I'd love to do a trade with you!

Probably, as long as I can fit it into my suitcase! If I can't, I may have to send it back home with you or somebody else I know.

Er.... you have to know me REALLY well, and even then I'd prefer it wasn't in public.

Yes! I am cordial and friendly in person up front. If you end up having no social grace or start acting weird, the niceness steadily declines into a cold shoulder.

I sure do! Table 68, where I'll be selling Pipeys (both as normal and in holiday options), scarves, and window clings, all custom made! (Bring a picture for me to trace for window clings)
Do you have prints/CDs?
Not exactly, but I do have some wicked-awesome how-to booklets! Other non-custom things I have include mobiles and display cases.
Will you have art in the Art Show? General or Adult sections?
I do have a spot in the Art Show! A table for 3D art in the General section. I still need ideas for what to make! I'm thinking Krampus? I can't think of anything on-theme, as I don't know enough about cars to feel comfortable making one.

Needin' a ride to IFC probably
Posted 14 years agoSo Savant and I were going to drive to IndyFur Con together, but now it seems he's just as car-less as I am! Poor thing totaled it, just like I did back in October.
So here's what would be ideal: Someone going either from or through Cincinnati, arriving in Indianapolis on Thursday, August 11th at 6pm or earlier. I will split the cost of gas, and would also like to make a small stop for shopping shortly before we arrive in Indy. I'm throwin' a party for 2_gryphon on Thursday night, since it's his birthday!
I'm trying my best to keep my luggage light, but since I do have a Dealer's Table, I'll at least have a big tub full of merchandise. I should otherwise be able to keep my luggage to a minimum.
So... anyone?

Posted 14 years agoSo it's no big secret that my birthday is on June 29th, which is two days AFTER Anthrocon ends. Now I don't know about you, but I'd much rather celebrate turning 21 with all my friends at Anthrocon than at home with my mother. So here's the big important question: Who will be there that long? And can I room with you monday and tuesday nights? I will definitely have to raise enough money to do so before deciding to actually stay that long.

CHECK 2. Find somebody to draw my AFK table sign things (seen in my scraps). Anyone have any suggestions on an artist with a cute, toony style who wouldn't cost too much? EDIT: This might have to wait. I'm running out of money due to a push to try and get a car.
CHECK 3. Finish writing my How-To booklet, and get it all filled up with some great pictures. Again, anyone interested in one of those, or is it a wasted effort?
CHECK 4. Make up some pretty cards to put on the table with all the different prices, and how prices are set.
5. Pay Tugrik for my canvas banner, so he can ship it when it's ready.
6. Pay Ringtail Cafe for the booklets, and figure out how many of them I should get.
CHECK 7. Purchase a small plastic desk-basket.
8. Fill said basket with mini-pipeys for people to buy pre-made.
9. Start to go down the list of free art, and make more samples for the table. Especially some in pairs! Maybe start to fit them into the display cases I have.
10. Figure out how to hang a hanging photomobile in a good way on a table, without having any access to the ceiling.
11. Practice setting up the table with a table of the same size at home. This'll let me plan out what things should be visible, and which should be in the front, and how much room I have to use for everything!

One is a special-ed teacher who likes gardening and wants to move into an RV in the next couple years. She likes really heartfelt, sentimental things that show you've actually put some thought into it.
The other is the exec at a soup kitchen who likes motorcycles, guns, her dog, and fancy new gadgets.
Any ideas?
(On the bright side, I get off scott-free on father's day.)

Posted 14 years agoSo I keep seeing these free art journals around, and they keep getting upwards of a hundred replies or so. Sounds good for business, or at least to get a name out there, no? Sounds like I should have a try. Here's a few key details.
Drawings:
* I don't take any pride in my drawings. This is probably because they kinda suck. That means I need practice, right?
* I don't have much motivation for drawing sometimes. At other times I'll get a big ol' I-wanna-draw-now spurt.
* Sometimes I'll just sketch out a drawing, or sometimes I'll ink and color it. You never know what you're gonna get.
Pipeys:
* Pipeys are what I really take pride in. This is what I'm assuming most of you are watching me for.
* I need examples for my tables in the Artist Alley and Dealer's Den. In the past few months, I've sold some of my examples, and my supply is getting a little thin. This is where you can come in.
* I can make a pipey of you for free. It might range anywhere from a 1-dollar size to a 40-dollar size, depending on your character and what I need more of at the moment.
* Let's say you see the pipey that I made of you for free, and you really like it. You can buy it from me, and I'll ship it to you. Here's the catch: Again, when you request your free art, you never know what you're gonna get. So your free pipey might be bigger than you were banking on, when it comes to purchasing purposes!
* If you DON'T purchase your free pipey, I will keep it as an example for my table.
* Now, because I'm working in a 3-dimensional medium, I only have so much space. When I have enough examples, I will stop making free pipeys. No more pipeys will be made without a guarantee of being bought. If someone buys an example at a convention, I will then re-open the free pipeys to fill that spot.
How to get one:
* Like usual, reply with a comment here.
* Include a reference of your character.
* Include a link to a journal that you've made, which has a link to this journal right here.
* Tell me whether you want a drawing or a pipey. (Prompts for drawings are greatly appreciated)

Posted 14 years agoI'm trying to do a bit of brainstorming on a subject. Here's what I had on twitter so far, I'll elaborate when I think of how to word it.
I like contact, especially from friends. But I was raised with very little of it; I don't know how to ask for it or respond appropriately.
This problem grows exponentially in public. I don't want to send the wrong signals to anyone involved. (gee, introvert much?)
If nothing else I may respect your personal boundaries more than you'd like me to in public. In private I will usually reciprocate anything.
I need to disassociate touch in general from sex. Not all touches have to be advances, and my mind has trouble with that concept sometimes.
