If you ever wanted to relate to DBZ Broly
Posted a year agoJust play through Yoshi's Island. By time you get to the end, Mario will have you understanding why Broly is triggered by Kakarot.
The thing I hate most about commercials
Posted a year agoIs when you get the same exact commercial twice during the same commercial break. Which is even worse when it happens on a website like YouTube.
Pokemon Golem: Describing a Texture?
Posted a year agoDoes anybody happen to know what a good word would be for describing the texture of the shell of the Pokemon Golem? Of course, I'm not looking for something generic, like rocky or rugged. I'm specifically trying to come up with a distinct way, perhaps with a particular obscure word, to convey the style or pattern of the rocks that compose its shell.
YouTube Comment Likes
Posted a year agoWhen it comes to likes on YouTube, I would rather my comment have zero likes than one like. Because whenever a comment has only one like, it makes it look as though it was the commenter who liked their own comment. Especially if it's either a very recent, or very old comment with only one like.

RIP Akira Toriyama
Posted a year agoWe solute you, good sir, for all your contributions to entertainment that reached across the globe, and influenced not only modern storytellers, but undoubtedly those of the future. The world will be forever affected by what you gave us, and mourn that which might've been, but fate cruelly denied.

Wizardry
Posted a year agoI just tried the very first Wizardry game for the first time in my life. As in the original PC version (or at least whatever original PC version I found for download). And to say it's dated is definitely an understatement. Heck, you can't even cast magic without knowing the names of the spells in your spell book, and typing out the spell name to cast it. Without being allowed to check your spell book when you're doing so, so you better either have your spells memorized, or written down. Nor is there music, and only very basic sound effects. But if you've happened to play it, I'm sure you already know all of that. Nevertheless, I felt as an RPG fan, I had an obligation to give it a try at some point.
Also while looking into them, I read that the fourth game in the main series is notoriously difficult. As in, one website even stated that it's arguably the most difficult computer game to have ever been commercially released. So that's exciting, if I happen to get to that point.

Finally finished with Attack on Titan
Posted 2 years agoAnd all I can say is good riddance. I've disliked that show ever since about halfway through the first season, whenever the idea of what the titans actually were was introduced. Despite that, certain elements of the story left me intrigued just enough to see it through, yet praying with each season that it would finally end so I could put it behind me. Except it kept not ending. Add that to how much time there was between the actual release of each season, or sometimes just portions of a season, and I would be happy to never have to think about it again. Definitely my absolute least favorite thing I've ever tolerated through to the end.
Pokemon TCG, Game Boy NSO
Posted 2 years agoDoes anybody play it? I've recently been playing it quite a bit, and got to thinking that it could be neat to ask around a bit, and see if anybody else also enjoys it, and would perhaps be interested in arranging some online duels at some point in time. I've heard it's possible to play against other players using Nintendo Switch Online, and I assume it would load each player's individual save files for the sake of using one's own decks, although I'm not sure exactly how it would do that since I've never done it. And while I'm certainly no elitist or anything, it would be fun to be able to try out some of my decks against real opponents, while also getting a bit more value out of some of the farming I've done to get certain rare cards for those decks.
Remakes

Microwave frozen meals
Posted 2 years agoThat moment when they say to cook them for a certain amount of time, then stir or spoon the sauce, then cook them for an additional amount of time. Except that for the second step, they're always still completely frozen, so you're like, "How am I supposed to stir this?"
The Irony of Faith

Pokemon DLC Question
Posted 2 years agoFor anybody who has played the recent Pokemon Scarlet/Violet DLC, I was wondering. About what level are the Pokemon of opposing trainers (assuming there even are very many)? I haven't gotten the DLC yet, but was thinking about arranging some Pokemon to use during it (those from my playthrough of the main story are probably over-leveled from having used them awhile for farming money and resources for PvP battles), and wanted to know what to expect for preparing that team to proper levels.
F-Zero 99
Posted 2 years agoIt's as gloriously chaotic as one would hope from such a game. Although I do not remember the original F-Zero being so squirrelly with its controls. But maybe that's due in part to how many decades it's been since last I played the original F-Zero. Or they just made adjustments to accommodate the massive number of players. I have no idea.
Sea of Stars thoughts
Posted 2 years agoI've been playing a fair bit of Sea of Stars these last few days. Am about 17 hours in. And from that time put into it, I feel like the best way I can describe the game is to call it squandered potential. That's not to say it's not thoroughly enjoyable. It's still a great time, and I look forward to seeing where it goes. However, for all the great elements of retro classics from which it took clear inspiration, Sea of Stars utterly fails to understand why those borrowed elements made those old games masterpieces in the first place. Making it feel more like a shallow imitation, than an homage or return to those classics of yesteryear.
The main example that comes to mind is the features it borrows from Chrono Trigger, but doesn't really do anything with them that makes them interesting. Like how enemy formation is a factor when it comes to things like targeting them with attacks. That could've been great. Just look at all the types of attacks and situations Chrono Trigger presented by doing that. Battles were dynamic, enemies were in constant motion, and you had a plethora of attacks that could hit all sorts of enemy formations to make it so every battle, and sometimes even the same battle repeated, felt entirely different. Instead, Sea of Stars took that, and not only made all the enemies static so nothing is changing, but from what I've seen, the only attacks where that even matters are moves which hit a circular area around the main target. There's no line attacks, proximity attacks, or anything of the sort to make it so that you need to be changing your strategy for each situation. The only thing that ever changes is, "Can I hit one enemy with my fireball? Or three." And because the enemies never move, you never need to reassess your options throughout the course of a battle.
The presence of dual techs (and maybe triple techs, I don't know yet if those are a thing) suffer from similar lack of insight into what made that a fun mechanic nearly 30 years ago. Not only do you now have a super meter to use them, which for 99% of battles will never fill up enough to use anyway unless it's a boss, but they might as well just be super attacks. The element of them being dual techs is superfluous at best, because they still only use up one character's turn to perform, the cost of the technique doesn't affect either user because it's taken from a shared energy pool (there is traditional MP for single techs, by the way), and because you can freely swap party members in and out, the necessity to have certain party members available is completely moot unless one of them happens to be unconscious. So it ends up going from, "Oh, hey, awesome! That was from Chrono Trigger," to being more along the lines of, "Oh, hey, why did they even bother if they were going to put so little effort into it?"
And that's not even counting the game's own design quirks that just make it strange. Such as having absolutely no status effects from what I've seen, making battles pretty much nothing but back and forth damage without anything to significantly change up the pace. And the relics are cool; or at least they would be, if more of them provided more interesting effects than just "receive more damage," or "shops are now cheaper." There are a couple that provide more interesting effects in that they provide both a positive and negative effect, or do little things to slightly change how the game plays. But for most of them, they're little more than tiny difficulty tweaks, which if that's all they were going to be, they might as well have just been options to select from a menu. Not to mention that new ones are acquired so infrequently, that I never feel like the game is being changed by periodic tweaks. Making me sometimes forget that the relics are even a thing.
As I said though, the game is still thoroughly enjoyable. I really like the Wheels minigame, and the battles do have elements that make them interesting enough. Such as having very little MP, meaning you need to really think about resource management. Or how you can interrupt enemy special attacks, which often requires a fair bit of thought into whether or not you want to interrupt the attack entirely, or partially; as well as how to go about it depending on the interruption conditions. But that's all stuff it does on its own. When it comes to a lot of the features that it copied from other games--save for having timed hits--I feel that it really falls flat. Like they were trying so hard to garner attention by imitating classics, that they forgot to actually ask themselves why those classics are so beloved in the first place, and how they could recapture that. Looking instead at those features strictly at their surface value, and leaving it at that.
I could go on, but this was just a brief collection of thoughts I felt like sharing for little reason other than to share them.

Super Mario World Spin Jumping
Posted 2 years agoWhen I was a kid, I legitimately didn't know the difference between normal jumping, and spin jumping in Super Mario World. I didn't know it was stronger against certain enemies. I didn't know you could bounce on certain spiked enemies. Heck, I'm not even sure if I knew you could use it to break yellow bricks. So I pretty much just ignored spin jumping entirely, and beat the entire game without using them.

If I had a photographic memory
Posted 2 years agoI would sift through all the memories of my life, compile a list of every single time I've ever said that something was the "dumbest thing I've ever heard," and then after giving some real thought to every single instance, make a countdown video of the top ten actual dumbest things I've ever heard.
Palafin

Dear Walking Wake

Air Fortress
Posted 2 years agoAm I crazy? Or is Air Fortress on NES criminally overlooked when it comes to discussing difficult retro games. I mean, I'm no slouch when it comes to tough games. Challenging video games pretty much sustain me, and I've beaten some doozies in my day, like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, the original TMNT for NES, Contra: Hard Corps (although haven't gotten every ending), ActRaiser 2, and the entire NES trilogy of Ninja Gaiden. Yet the ending for Air Fortress has continued to elude me my entire life. Am I just bad at that game in particular? Or is there some vindication to my struggles.
