Light At the End of the Tunnel
Posted 10 years agoSo, I work this weekend and into next week, but I think after today the worst is behind me and at the end of next week I should be done for the summer. Just in time for an end of the month update!
Hey, remember Supermegatopia?
Posted 10 years agoApparently a lot of people don't know that
, of Supermegatopia fame, is currently doing an ongoing comic.
You should probably go check that out.

June Update
Posted 10 years agoHey everyone,
Ok, so I've been posting that I was expecting this week to be rough, but then I'd be focusing on art starting probably next week.
This week is turning out to be even more work than I expected. Basically, right now I'm working two jobs and have a pair of big appointments all this week. So some of what I planned to get done this week is going to get pushed into next week.
After that, I'm definitely in the clear for the summer and will do that whole comics and commissions thing for the entire summer. And I'll have more money to carry me through the summer to boot. Maybe I'll buy new boots! Mine have holes in them.
Oh, speaking of comics, due to work it's very likely I won't have time to post the new page tomorrow to any of my galleries. Don't panic and kill your family, the new page will automatically appear at http://drawholic.net/ around 6am EST as usual. If I can't update the comic in the morning I'll try and post it tomorrow night or this weekend.
**Update Update***
Ok, so I woke up much earlier than I'd expected. Way ahead of my alarm, even, so today's page is up. Going to post to a couple more sites, toss myself in the shower, and run to work.

Sunday Stream

Ok, other than an extended break in the middle of the day to play videogames, spent most of Saturday streaming.
Tomorrow I've got more streaming on the agenda. I'll likely get started around 9am EST. Watch this journal or my Twitter, or just follow me on Picarto to catch the stream announcement.

Saturday Stream Update
Posted 10 years agoHey everyone,
In case you didn't see it, I was streaming all morning., Currently I'm in the middle of a break but in about an hour I will be back to work on a new page of "The Sprawl".
This is sort of a pre-vacation stream for me. Next week should be pretty busy and stressful, so I can using this weekend to rest and relax. For me that means drawing my comic and random doodles. And cartoons. And videogames.
So, yeah, if you want to hang out with me on Picarto, keep an eye on the link below or this journal in about an hour. I finished the line work for a page this morning, this afternoon will be devoted to colouring the page.

Saturday Morning Cartoons and Art Stream
Posted 10 years agoOfficial Site | Twitter | Tumblr | Patreon | Picarto
Ok, so I've somehow wound up on a super early schedule, waking up around 5am EST and passing out around 10p, EST. I was streaming most of today until 2pm, and was intending to stream more tonight, but I'm already beginning to nod off so I'll probably crawl into bed shortly instead.
So, look for a stream early tomorrow morning. Probably around 5-6am. If I'm not having any technical issues, expect Saturday morning cartoons while I stream.
I'm not sure how long the stream will run, I'll likely take a break at some point and I'm expecting a call I'll have to deal with in the afternoon. But I expect a good chunk of tomorrow to be spent in a stream.
I'll post updates here on FA, and to Twitter. Check out my Twitter and Picarto links above and follow me on both to receive updates and automated stream announcements.
The subject of tomorrow's streaming? Well, expect a lot of it to be devoted to a new page of "The Sprawl", but I may also spend a good chunk of the stream doodling randomly.
See you tomorrow!
***SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE***
Ok, so just woke up like 20 minutes ago. Making breakfast, then I'll be streaming. Probably with GuNMouTH so it will be a NSWF stream. He's a kinky bastard. Not all puritanical and upstanding like I am. He's streaming right now, and watching Daredevil. The awesome Netflix series, not the terrible movie.

Summer Plans
Posted 10 years agoHey everyone,
I'll be posting a big "state of the artist" entry at the end of the month, but with my seasonal day job winding down I wanted to update everyone on my plans for the summer.
Due to good circumstances it looks like I can take the summer off to focus on art, rather than my grueling summer job from last year. Unless something sweet and tasty falls in my lap, that is exactly what I plan to do.
I don't have a definite end date for my day job yet. It's very likely this coming week is my final week, but it could last up until the 30th. I'll let you guys know when I know. I am expecting this coming week to be fairly grueling and I spent most of last week doing day job work, so this weekend I plan to relax. But for me "relaxing" means working on The Sprawl and random doodle sessions so expect some updates tonight or tomorrow regarding streams this weekend.

State of the Artist, June 2015.
Posted 10 years agoSo, the good news is I'm finished with LOG:02 of "The Sprawl". It is completely, entirely done. Also, I added a couple of pages to LOG:01 to smooth out the story and address a couple of issues several readers pointed out to me. I think the new pages really do make it a better read. You can check them out over at the official site.
(Just to clarify, I'm done making pages for LOG:02, but that doesn't mean they're all posted yet. You'll know when LOG:02 is over when you see a LOG:03 title page.)
Right now I'm fleshing out the LOG:03 outline and working on some concept art for the chapter. Character and environment designs, nothing too major but I'll be sharing some of that over on my Patreon in the near future. It's slow going because lately the only time I have for "The Sprawl" is during my commute to and from my day job.
Speaking of Patreon, my day job, etcetera, this summer I am going to be moving in an attempt to reduce my living expenses. Rent and insurance have both gone up in the past year and none of my plans for additional work hours have panned out like I'd hoped. Meanwhile, my day job schedule is such that I working separate jobs is exceptionally difficult. I can no longer afford my own place.
With my living expenses reduced, and a big payment expected from one of the additional jobs I've worked over the past month, I am expecting I should be able to forego working over the summer and instead focus more on art. This does not mean much for "The Sprawl" but I will be putting my usual work time towards commissions and a second, paid, comic I have been attempting to get going for some time. If that works out, I hope to continue with that through the fall instead of returning to my day job.
That said, if you are enjoying "The Sprawl" and would like both to see more pages released faster, and you'd like to see me continue the story past the currently planned arc, please consider supporting me through Patreon. The current arc is going to be about 3-4 more chapters and total out at about 400 pages, but will itself only be the first part of a much larger story I have brewing.
https://www.patreon.com/drawholic
Patreon supporters get each month's pages delivered at the start of each month, rather than waiting for the weekly page updates, and are also privy to concept art. bonus art, page previews, etcetera. All of which I hope to do more of as my day job comes to an end for the summer.
And the big thing, whether or not you're able to support me through Patreon, if you're enjoying the comic please +watch this account and follow me on Twitter, Picarto and Tumblr (links below!).

100 +Faves!
Posted 10 years agoSo, the first page of "The Sprawl" just hit 100 +favs! I believe it is the first item in my gallery to do so.
But I'm curious if we can smash that. So if you've been enjoying "The Sprawl", do me a favor and add the first page to your +Faves! You can finda link to it from the most recent page's description.

State of the Artist, May 2015. (Spoilers, it's not good.)
Posted 10 years agoHey guys,
Sorry I've been so slow with responses to messages, comments, et all. 2015 is trying to finish the job 2014 failed to do in killing me.
Right now I'm working several jobs just to make ends meet, and not entirely successful at that. I can no longer afford my apartment so I'm going to be moving in with some friends as soon as I can, but they need to refurbish the room I'll be staying in before I can move. I was originally supposed to move in at the end of this month, but because of circumstances outside anyone's control, it looks like I can't move until July at the earliest. And even that's iffy.
Just remember, if you stop by any Wednesday and don't see a new page here, check out my website at http://drawholic.net/ where the page updates are automatic. I mostly just repost the pages to my art galleries to get new readers and because I love seeing your comments.
A few people I talk to have asked how they can help out, which I really appreciate, but all I can really do is point people at my Patreon. If you want to help me keep my head above water AND get more new Sprawl pages every week, the best thing you can do is pledge 50 cents or a dollar a month to me through Patreon. I know 50 cents a month doesn't sound like much, but it adds up when enough people do it. I need to get Sally Struthers to do commercials about it. "For the price of a cup of coffee, you can feed a comic artist for a month!"
I've also got a second comic I've been slowly collaborating on. You've probably seen some of the concept art in my gallery. I'm hoping to have more work for that to show off soon.
Also, remember to +fave those pages, reblog my Tumblr posts, retweet me on Twitter and just generally share the love for "The Sprawl" by helping to get it in front of as many eyes as possible!
And a big thank you to everyone who's been reading the comic! It makes me really happy to see so many people enjoying this weird, smutty horror-trip of a comic I've been putting together. Keep reading! There's a lot more to come!*
*That was not innuendo!

"Thanks for the watch!" OR "How Artists Get Seen"
Posted 10 years agoIf you've been on FA or most other art galleries for any length of time, you've seen it before. You click the "watch" or "follow" button on an artist's gallery and some time later they add a message to your shout board. "Thanks for the +watch!" or similar. Some people love it, some people hate it and request that artists do not do it on their shout board, but one thing I'm not sure most people think about is why artists do that.
"They're just being polite!" you might say, and there's some truth to that. However, there's a more self-serving and, I'd say, necessary reason we do it.
Because it's how we get seen by others.
Online art sites, all of them, have a very limited idea of how to help artists get seen by more people. The assumption is that most artists will get seen by their uploads as users browse the latest additions to the site, but the reality is that is the least effective way for an artist to get seen by others. On FA, a new submission gets pushed off the first page within minutes, if not seconds depending on how busy the site is at the moment. And not long after their latest work is already buried under 5-10 pages of new submissions. A day later? It could be buried under a hundred pages. Chances are, most visitors to the site aren't going to dig more than a handful of pages in.
Not effective at all.
So the question foremost on most artists minds is then, "how do I get more people to notice my work?" One of the primary ways being to add a shout message to anyone who watches us. Anyone who visits your page will see our message in the shout board, and will see that you liked us enough to follow our work. And if you are looking for new artists to check out, that is one of the best ways. If an artist you're following likes this other artist well enough to follow them, chances are good they're worth checking out!
And, sadly, this is our primary agency in promoting our own work outside of spending a couple hundred dollars on an advertisement. Art galleries like FA do not give us any other tools. Beyond "thanks for the +watch" posts, all other avenues of promotion depend on people other than the artist.
Having our work added to your favourites is actually our primary way of getting more eyes to our galleries. Favourite galleries tend not to change as frequently as the new submissions page so everyone who visits your page gets an eyeful of our work. This is why the new FA UI, which hides favourite galleries under a separate tab, will be murder on artists' ability to get seen.
Yeah, look forward to that.
I often wish online galleries did more to foster community.
Showcasing artists, genres, and types of art.
Giving viewers more options to showcase art that they like. If you give someone an option to choose a "featured favourite", list a favourite writer/artist, list a favourite genre or type of art", all as a part of their profile then they're likely to put something in there.
Put polls, contests, etcetera out there and people are likely to participate.
Ever notice how when you view something on Amazon it has that bar "people who purchased this item also purchased these items"? Galleries could do something like that for artists. "People who +watched this artist also +watched these artists" or "People who +faved this submission also +faved these submissions" to help nudge people towards artists similar to what they like.
Something as simple as prompting people to leave a comment or a shout can lead to a lot more activity on the site. "You viewed 5 submissions by this artist/writer, why not leave a shout/comment?" or providing a greater connection to social media like Twitter, Tumblr, et all (like a feature that lets you automatically send a tweet or make a tumblr post when you like a submission or follow an artist).
I'm just spitballing here of course, but I'd love to see an active, ongoing community discussion on what sites like FA and Weasyl could do in this regard.

FA Beta
Posted 10 years agoBeen trying out the beta for the new FA interface.
It eliminates artist's Featured Submissions and Favourites displayed on a person's FA page.
I'll just let that sink in because I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around it. The new FA interface will eliminate the artist's ability to select a piece to represent their gallery, and it will eliminate the best way to find new artists to watch.
They clearly did not think their brilliant plan all the way through, here.

Reminder to those reading "The Sprawl"
Posted 10 years agoThis Wednesday regular readers get a brand new page of "The Sprawl" to enjoy.
Patreon supporters get five new pages of "The Sprawl" to enjoy!
That's right! Sign up to throw a tiny amount of money, like a dollar, at me each month, and you get the full month's pages at the start of the month, every month!
The more support I get, the more pages that will amount to. Right now I only post one page a week, so 4-5 pages a month, but my goal is to eventually do this full time, which would mean about 20 pages a month. Not bad for what's essentially "pay what you want" and you get to support a comic you enjoy!

More DrawHolic to Feed Your Addition!
Posted 10 years agoJust a semi-random reminder of all the wonderful places you can follow me!
I have art galleries on Weasyl and InkBunny!
https://www.weasyl.com/~getta
https://inkbunny.net/Getta
I do live art streams on Picarto!
https://www.picarto.tv/live/channel.....atch=DrawHolic
I have a Tumblr where in addition to posting art and comic pages, I reblog whatever stimulating information I come across. Which usually involves boobs.
http://drawholicxxx.tumblr.com/
I have a Twitter! Watch in wonder as I complain about my daily commute to work and how I'm down to only ramen and plain white rice in my pantry!
https://twitter.com/DrawholicXXX
I have a Patreon, where, for $1 a month, supporters get access to every month's pages right at the start of every month rather than waiting for the weekly drip feed!
https://www.patreon.com/drawholic
And, of course, there's my personal site and home to "The Sprawl". Right now it's just the comic, updated automagically every Wednesday at 6amEST, but eventually I do want to add more to the site.
http://drawholic.net/
And remember, you can always help an artist out by spreading the word about them. Reblog them on Tubmlr! Retweet them on Twitter! +fave their work on the art sites! And, of course, tell all your friends about them. I'm a little over a hundred pages into "The Sprawl" now, but, with your help, it's only just getting started!

Support an Artist! Get More Comics!
Posted 10 years agoHey guys,
I'm getting close to wrapping up the second chapter of "The Sprawl". In the year and change since I started posting, I've gained nearly a thousand viewers (more than that, across all my online galleries) and posted over a hundred pages.
The thing is, "The Sprawl" is a huge project. The current story is shaping up to be around 400 pages or more, and it is only one part of a much larger series of stories I want to tell. On top of that, "The Sprawl" series isn't even the only series of books I've got bouncing around in my head.
I want to make more pages, faster, but to do so I would need to free up time by reducing hours at my day job. To that end, this past October I set up a Patreon account. Through Patreon, people who wish to support "The Sprawl" can pledge tiny monthly donations.
https://www.patreon.com/drawholic
Emphasis on "tiny". The idea is not a few people pledging a lot, but to have a lot of people each pledging a very small amount.
You can set the amount you're willing to pay, whether it's 50 cents, a dollar, or more each month. Plus, if you pledge a dollar or more a month, you get access to the month's pages at the start of each month, rather than waiting for a page each week. Currently that is about 4 pages a month, but if I am able to get enough support to produce 2 pages each week then the number of pages subscribers get at the start of each month doubles, and so on!
I also try to throw in extras such as character concept art, sneak peeks at upcoming pages, and exclusive looks at my comic making process.
Every little bit helps! Thank you!
