Help! An experiment in commissions....
Posted 13 years agoJust using this journal to lay out a thought....
I was just curious if any of my work was good enough to warrant opening myself up to commissions. Because like most people, I do like money. The question then becomes what should I offer?
I consider my writing better than my art, but it's always been a dream to draw comics/art by request as well.
So if I offer it all, or see what I'm good at or known at, I get a small menu of what I can do.
From that menu of meager artistic offerings, I then have to attach a price tag....which I suck at the price is right. Meanwhile I don't want to over charge, or charge so low that it's a waste of both mine and the client's time.
So this is the best 'menu' I've come up with. Basically I'm looking for people's input on if this is reasonable at all. I'm still not sure if I should under take it at all however..... Some help would be appreciated.

Syndicate Profile Full $4

Written:
3 Page adventure, Clean $2
7 Page adventure, Clean $4
4 Page adventure, Filthy $6
10+ Pages of Filth $15
1-2 Page Medical Report for Fursona $2
(A comprehensive, indepth and pseudo-scientific profile on the psycological and biological aspects of your Fursona, written up by Doctor McPherson.)
Now this is a tenative list of what I'll think I can manage vs demand. (of which I doubt there will be much, so should I post this, should I throw up banners "COMMISSIONS OPEN". what is the BEST way to get a good test on these? Thats what I want, a dry run to see if this will work, or blow up in my face so violently that I'll run away from the computer for years.
Thanks Everyone,
Gorilla Jack
Thanks for the info and comments, with them I've been able to tease out my meager commission ideas. Thanks everyone,

The Animation Renaissance and the Epochs of Animation
Posted 13 years agoJust a work in progress I'm jotting down, I'll be updating and editing it until it's a full fledged time line and account.
Neolithic 1920s - 1949
I denote the Neolithic era of animation by the lack of widespread animation available to the masses, movie shorts are all that are available and the quality varies dramatically.
Notables: Fleischer Film Superman
Notable Achievement: Invention of the Rotoscope and Multi-layer Camera
Gold Standard: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
Most Prevalent Style: Felix the Cat
Bronze Age 1950 - 1962
Most Prevalent Style: Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog, Flintstones
Silver Age 1963-1983
The Animation Renaissance 1984-1994 (The Crux of my whole argument)
Gold Standard; Aladdin, Little Mermaid
Modern Age 1995-2006
Post Modern Age 2006 -2011
Quite literally post modern because EVERYthing became so stylized to the point of looking like an e-surance commercial! Chaotix, Ben 10,
Contemporary; 2012

The Pain of Constructive Criticism...
Posted 13 years agoEver have one of those nights when you just don't feel like your good at anything you try? There are a lot of things that I enjoy a lot, but among my hobbies I'm just mediocre. I love video games, but I suck at fighters and FPS, although I've beat some in my day. I enjoy drawing, but lets face it, I'm a novice and my ideas far exceed my abilities to put them to paper. I'm fine with this and have accepted it. However there was something really really stung tonight.
I'm a fan of the Heroclix game. I love comic books and characters, so when there was a game where I could collect my favorites and battle with them, or make my own team I've jumped on it. I've been playing since it's inception in 2001. I know I'm no champion, but I've always viewed myself as a moderate or decent player. Well, lately two jerks have been visiting my local game shop (surprise surprise only on tournament days when a prize is at stake) One has been playing the same team for the past six weeks. So I asked my good friend and store proprietor for some advice. I related my strategy, my thoughts on the matter, and asked if such and such a change would work here or there.
His advice was sound, but just hurt. He said that I'm not a competitive player by any stretch of the word. That I should just make a team I like, play, and really really try for the fellowship award. Or that I should just tell everyone "I'm gonna lose, would you vote me as most sportsman etc etc.". It's a sound strategy, and true, but just stung.
I used to be good at all these games I played. Then BOOM, three years of nearly consecutive losses. I quit playing pokemon after the advent of supporter cards because they just made the game 'draw cards till you win' as opposed to the game I liked. It just got too cut throat....and I HATE THAT.
Your thoughts?
Needing a sick day..
Posted 13 years agoI've been knocked down for a little over a day with a nasty head cold! Luckily I didn't have to work on the day it hit the worst. I spent most of my day camped out in my recliner with comics, tea and my PS3. Either that or veg out for a few hours with the internet. So, a couple of projects that I've fiddled with came to mind and for no other reason than feedback, I decided to upload them. Here goes with the first one...
I am a product of the 80s! And these are the top then songs I think of when I think of the feel and spirit of that time. (Note these aren't the best, or greatest songs, or my favorites, but to me they are quintessential 80s! Almost distilled 80s!)
10 Back in Time Huey Lewis and the News
09 Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Cyndi Lauper
08 Everybody Have Fun tonight Wang Chung
07 Automatic The Pointer Sisters
06 Sweet Dreams The Eurythmics (I love Annie Lennox)
05 The Final Countdown Europe
04 You Spin Me Round Dead or Alive
03 Video Killed the Radio Star The Buggles
02 Get into the Groove Madonna
01 Holding Out for a Hero Bonnie Tyler

My Furry World
Posted 13 years agoJust fishing for some comments on this one, so please be honest with me here.
Also throwing out there that I find it relaxing and fun to spend a few hours roleplaying as any of the below guys...
Jack is the fursona that I've used the longest/most consistently. However he was originally created for very pornographic reasons, so based on that is it appropriate to use him as my primary character? I've expanded his dimensions as well, but when coming toe to toe with some of the amazing creatures out there, I feel outdated and plain
Dr. McPherson is one of my favs, and came out of a very dark and creative period of my life. I love him, but no one else seems to like him at all. So maybe that isn't a good choice either.....
(If you missed his bio he's a bitter little monkey who happens to be a genius of genetics, biology and medicine)
ANCILLARY NON-HUMANS
Org; The orc prince who is searching for his way home. I've enjoyed one or two adventures as this wise and lustful orc.
The Black Fox; The swashbuckling WOLF who has a little magic on his side as he adventures and plunders booty. He goes by Black Fox because in his part of the seven seas Fox is much less intimidating as Wolf. He is in search of his lost son.
Skunk; A truely filthy lumberjack human, that as he becomes more aroused becomes a literal skunk. (Hey someone who transforms ISN'T human)
Blechy the Pig; Originally a satire I used in several environmental projects, this pig is a true pig and advocates environmental destruction at every turn. He even has a following of people who listen to his teachings on clear cutting and wasteful habits. They are his faithful Belchy Bridgade. He even gives out merit badges.
I would love comments, feedback, suggestions on any of the above and would like to flesh more of them out as well. Also I mentioned I like RP, so If I get an anonymous IM it helps to add "Hey......insert character here" then I know it came from FA!
I'm James In Real Life by the way, and if you wanna talk to me and not a character thats appreciated as well. Thank you all for you time and I hope to be seeing you around.

Dr. McPherson's Profile
Posted 13 years agoDr. James McPherson
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 115 lbs.
Hair: Orange-tan
Eyes: Green
Species: Langur Bonobo Mix
Sex: Male
Born July 3, 1979 Columbus Ohio
Family: Estranged
Power Stats!
Strength: 3/10
Dexterity:7/10
Intelligence: 8/10
Fighting Skill:5/10
Sexual Prowess:5/10
James McPherson was a happy and lucky child. As he grew he began to show an aptitude for the sciences. Soon a social outcast the young man retreated into his studies. He graduated college with a PH.D. in veterinary medicine, a Masters in Pharmacology as well as Genetics.
He would later find what he thought was his dream job, but soon found his life was lacking something. In despair he underwent Furinetics to become a mighty gorilla. Unfortunately there was a problem on the operating table and he was triage d with Langur and Bonobo DNA. This resulted in a huge boost to his dexterity and stamina while his physical strength was diminished. This diminished stature led in his termination from the pristine gardens.
Contemplating suicide, a guardian angel in the form of a local fox intervened and told him of a secret society that could use his skills. From there he was swept up in a long winded tale of intrigue, treachery and political maneuvering. It was all brought to an end by the doctor as he fought for reform in the covert group.
He gained some fame with papers such as "Mutagenic Gametes and the evolution of Parasitic reproduction or Transforming Fluids and how they work" , "Ethical implications of gene therapy", "First Do no harm: an introspective on balancing patient's wants vs their health", and "No, I will not give you an extra..."
Now seeking a quite respite he has opened a medical lab and clinic to putter away his days unlocking secrets and helping people in need.
The doc is always in his lab coat and signature trunks as well as a thick leather bangle from his society days. His right ear is pierced with a gold earring and he can be a bit fidgety at times. Due to his "DNA being run through a blender" he is immune to the transforming effects of many other furs. However these can result in him becoming highly intoxicated.

Height: 6'9"

Hair Black, gray at lower back like any silverback
Eyes: Blue
Species: Gorilla
Sex: Male
Born: March 24, 1983
Known Family: Parents: Estranged

Brother (Adopted) Nick

Power Stats!
Strength: 7/10

Intelligence: 6/10
Fighting Skill: 5/10
Sexual Prowess: 8/10
History: Jack born a human in the town of Athens Ohio. Living a sheltered life he played and kept mostly to himself, the definition of introvert. As he grew and found a calling in technology he began to come out of his shell in high school. With his confidence bolstered by a great senior year, Jack threw himself into his studies in College. Unsure of his true path he followed his true dreams taking pre med and computer engineering courses.
During a fateful trip to his home town he met the local celebrities, the Gorilla Brothers, the filthy fiends that were that town's only furs. Stepping up to the challenge to talk to the gorillas, Jack embarked on a year long trip of discovery and friendship with the perverted duo.
The two encouraged his academics and helped him become a confident young man. They ultimately invited him to become the third and Youngest brother, expanding the Gorilla Brothers to a trio. They used their vast wealth to pay for the pricey Furinetics process, splicing him with his chosen animal, a gorilla. With his new gorilla form the kid took the name Jack to fit in with his newly minted Bros.
As the trio lived together they became and expanded their own small family. A year later Nick and Jack moved into their own place with an adopted son. They renevated extensively to reinforce the structure to support boisterous gorillas.
As time went on Jack developed arthritis in his knees, but this only slows him down sometimes. Jack and Nick have become the kings of pop culture, archiving books, movie props, toys, music, comics and forming extensive computer archives of pictures, vids, music and data.
Giving Jack a scissor sisters cd is like giving the Human Torch the phrase "FLAME ON!" He loves the 80s, cartoons and comics. He has over 30gigs devoted to Lady Gaga on his hard drive. Among his trademarks is his big pair of jean shorts, and a modified Iphone that can access all the data he has amassed on his drives.
Jack is the smallest and most tender of the gorilla bros an is only dangerous or angry when his family and friends are threatened. He recently relocated to FA to meet some other apes, have fun, and expand his network of contacts.

blueeyedredwolfMyself or How not to blather on as a Fanboy?
Posted 13 years agoIt's pretty obvious that I'm new to FA and I guess I wanted to introduce myself, but more importantly I wanted to get something off my chest.
Being new and not having access to the furry community as I would have loved in previous years I may have dived in with a little TOO much enthusiasm and want to apologize for any trespasses that I may have made against any of you.
As the subject line suggests I don't want to sound like a psycho fan boy when contacting someone for the first time. I guess I'm just having a little shock.
I see so very many pieces that are awesome or inspire my imagination and I just wish to be a part of that. (My skill is rather meager) add on top of that being in a community with three artists that I've followed for years and consider legends (Kupopo, Furry Revolution, and Grisser. If mentioning their names here without ever having chatted with them is wrong...it goes back to those trespasses I mentioned earlier.) it's all a little overwhelming and the chances for hero-worship are great...
So I wish to bow down and ask that you bear with me as I learn the ropes and hope that none of my shouts/comments/notes come off as offensive or gibberish. Thank you.
Now that this chore is out of my way, I guess I'll introduce myself a bit.
My real name is James. I live in Ohio and hold my masters degree in Biology from OSU along with a few minors. I've worked at both vet clinics and a zoo. I've wanted to devote my life to protecting animals and endangered species.
As for my fursona (correct term) I've only ever roleplayed or written about two Jack McKenzie (My gentle computer literate gorilla that this profile is based on) and Doctor McPherson the bitter little Langur Doctor.
I thank you all for your patience and wish to extend my hand/paw in friendship and hope to meet and get to know more of the wonderful people out here. :)
