Posted 15 years agoCan anyone suggest some good art books? I'm talking anything from anatomy, to poses to light and shadow studies.
I'm basically looking for how-to books in general that help you improve whether it be with special exercises or teaching techniques. It doesn't matter if it's for realistic or cartoony art and both beginner and professional books are fine.
I'm seriously looking to step up my game a bit this year and I feel studying and getting a few pointers might help.

We Need More Animal Tags Dammit!
Posted 15 years agoSeriously. I kept saying that to myself every time I submitted something new to this site over the past month that wasn't kind of generic. You would think a site that's all about anthropomorphic art would have a bigger catalog of creatures for you to use in the tags when you submit something.
To be fair I don't expect everyone to know what a gerenuk or a xenopus is. Still can we have just a few more species added to the list? I MEAN THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE COW LISTED!
Is there a way to request a species to add? Would you ask a moderator or start a thread on the forums? Does anyone have any ideas?

Animal Alphabet Challenge

For those of you who don't know I'm planning on making my own webcomic one day. And despite being very busy with real life stuff I've decided I need to get back into drawing on a regular basis. My skills need some sharpening and I've got to start creating again. So I came up with an idea to get my creative juices flowing. Drawing an animal for every letter of the alphabet.
In preparation for the comic I've decided to spend this month working on designs for extras. Like characters in the background. 26 animals over the next 26 days. Not only does this sound like a good way to get in some much needed practice, it should help me to expand my skill set a bit.
I do one drawing a day. I don't work on characters in advance either. This forces me to draw everyday. I'm more concerned about making this a habit than anything. I'm not even worried about naming the characters. I have a nice long list of animals to choose from to so I don't have to spend a ton of time to decide what to draw.
The drawings themselves are just sketches, this helps me to make the deadline everyday. Besides I'm not worried about making these perfect. As long as you can immediately recognize what the animal is then mission accomplished.
I hope you all enjoy what I come up with over the next few weeks. Wish me luck on what I hope will be a very productive month!

Watching Spree
Posted 16 years agoAfter talking to a friend on the subject I've decided I may be a bit too picky when it comes to watching artists on this site and I may be missing out by doing so. I'm only watching 50 something people as of right now out of the thousands of artists her so I feel I should broaden my horizons a bit.
So I plan on going on a bit of a watching spree (as the title of this journal suggests). I'm just gonna go through a bunch of galleries and watch whoever looks like they might have some nice art I would want to keep up with.
Whether I'll feel the same way about that persons art later is immaterial. I'm just gonna enjoy all the fresh new (or at least new to me) galleries for the moment.
I even made a new image to put on peoples shout pages. Since I have no idea what I would say to them I'll let my own art speak for me. XD

Savin' Favs
Posted 16 years agoI love looking through my favorites. To me favs represent the coolest stuff the people I watch have to offer. The pieces that inspire me, the art that makes me glad I found this site in the first place.
Whether it's for reference or just to stroll down memory lane It's fun looking back at what I consider to be the best of the best art here.
So of course I'm pretty picky about them even though I have like a couple hundred now!
Know what I hate though? Looking through my favorite drawings only to see some are missing. That sucks. Every time I see one of those grey squares with an X etched into it I get bit depressed. Something that I really like is gone and since I can't remember what was there most of the time there's a good chance it's gone for good.
So I decided to do a little preemptive strike. I'm saving all this stuff! So in a couple of weeks when I undoubtedly see some new grey squares I know what was lost and that it's not lost forever.
I'd recommend all you do the same.

1. To earn some cash till I get me a new job and
2. To force myself to be more productive. I'm not sure how many folks would actually be interested in this but I figured it would be worth a shot. :)
Now let me get this one thing out of the way right now... I'm not doing any porn. Sorry to those that might have had their hopes up. But yeah, I've thought about this and don't expect anything more adult than what you've seen from me so far. The only nudity you can expect to see is the "cartoon kind of nudity" where there are no clothes but nothings really shown (think Bugs Bunny).

1) Batty is my first character and was made back when I was in the 2nd grade. He is not my "fursona" but I have based certain aspects of his personality off some some character traits of my own.
2) I'm attempting to learn to play the guitar. But not to impress chicks. To be honest it's so I can learn to play all my favorite tv and video game themes.
3) I used to draw all the time as a kid but stopped for years and didn't really start making art again till a couple years ago. I get depressed every time I think about how much progress I could have made with my art by now if I just kept it up.
4) My Moms spaghetti will always be my favorite meal.
5) I'd probably be done with college now if I wasn't so darn lazy. And picked a major that didn't require so much math...

Un-watched and Why
Posted 16 years agoI'm not watching a ton of people on this site and there's a reason why. When I watch someone it's a pretty big deal to me. It's pretty much one of the biggest compliments I can give to another artist and I take it seriously. If I'm watching you it means that your art is special to me. It means I believe there's something truly unique about the person who makes said art.
So for me to un-watch someone means must have you seriously screwed up.
Un-watching is not something I've done a lot. Usually it's only reserved for people who leave dead accounts or suddenly disappear and don't post anything new under that name. But lately I'm considering un-watching some people for a different reason.
For being silly immature attention-whoring whiney douches.
Whether it's not making new art for shallow reasons, moving to a new account every other week, or flooding my inbox with idiotic journals instead of you know... art, I'm getting fed up with some of the people on my watch list. That's just a couple reasons but really I could go on for days about this. Bottom line, I'm realizing some people here just aren't worth my attention.
I know when you un-watch someone it's confidential, you don't know who it is unless you sift through your watchers and figure out who's missing. But I'm considering saving those people some confusion by letting them know that I was the person who said; "I've had enough of your BS!" And I have no problem explaining to them in vivid detail what an ass they are for wasting my time.

New Arts Are A'Comin!
Posted 16 years agoHey folks, I'm just letting you know that while school and work has been taking up an enormous amount of my time lately I have been working a bunch of new art during what free time I do have including some very late trades.
I still need to find some parts to my scanner that went missing during the move to the new place but I might see if I can find an alternative place to scan my stuff like Kinko's or something.
In about 3-4 weeks however, summer break will be here and I'll have a lot more time for arting, since I can't really afford summer school right now.
So when I'm not doing the job thing I'll be trying my best to make up for the serious lack of updates. I apologize for that btw.
Till then I have a couple more colored pieces of other folks art to upload, so hopefully that will tide you all over for the time being.

Posted 16 years ago...to do my best with my art! I tell all of you who watch me that you help to give me the motivation to draw my heart out and I mean it. All the kind words I receive about my art are like fuel to me.
I truly appreciate all the compliments and criticisms you guys give me and I hope to exceed any and all expectations you have in the future.
Things have been rough for me for a while and while there are still things at home I need to take care of, my situation has been gradually improving. Thanks so much for being patient with me during a difficult time.
I have been drawing and once I'm able to scan some stuff I'll be updating on a regular basis again. Hopefully sooner than later. ^^ But school and home must come first and I know you all understand that.

You Guys Might Not See Me As Much Around Here For a While...
Posted 17 years agoRight now it's 11 o' clock at night. I'm by myself, in a car, with my laptop, in a staples parking lot. Why? Because it's the only way I can get online right now.
I'll spare you guys the grisly details but me and my family recently had to leave our home of the the past 5 years or so and are staying at a friends house till we can get a new apartment.
Our friend doesn't have any kind of internet connection so I'm just having to use whatever wi-fi hot spots I can find. So yeah...
Anyway I just thought I'd let those of you who actually care know what's going on.
Hopefully in a couple weeks this will all be over and things will be back like they used to be, hopefully...
Until then.

Nintendo DS and Gameboy Advance Games
Posted 17 years agoI wanted just one thing this Christmas and that was a DS... and I got it. Hooray! So far I have New Super Mario Bros., Sonic Rush Adventure, the first Phoenix Wright game and Starfox Command.
Any other good DS games out there I'm missing out on? Also since the DS can play Gameboy Advance games I'd like to try out some of those too, I'd imagine most of them would be pretty cheap too.
Since these art sites are full of gamers I figured you guys would know, plus I know you all have excellent taste. ^^
BTW: New art is coming soon, I should have something as soon as tomorrow. I haven't had as much time to draw as I'd like but I'm working on several things at once to show here. Thanks everybody! =D

It's been a while since I updated but there's new stuff coming real soon. Between finals and Christmas shopping (among other things) I have been real busy but I've still found time to do some drawing and I'm hard at work on trades and gifts I owe some folks.
