Let's get 'down'.
Posted 2 years agoTime for the latest postcard from my wandering mind.
If someone asked you how you define 'down,' what would you tell them? What does the concept of 'down' mean to you?
Please comment below before you read any other comments. I don't want them swaying your response.

I just want to put this idea out there.

Posted 3 years agoI just want to put this thought out into the universe.
You know what Easter Egg I'd love to see in the Super Mario Bros. Movie? I'd like them to imply that Mario Bros. Plumbing is a generational business by showing pictures of past generations of Mario Brothers, with those pictures being animated versions of Lou Albano and Danny Wells, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, and the original Donkey Kong cabinet art version of Mario.

Random Thought of the Day

My thoughts on the second Super Mario Movie trailer
Posted 3 years agoMy first thought is this trailer builds Mario up, not as 'the hero they needed,' but as 'the hero they got.' This is going to be a story about Mario growing into the legend he will become. You can see as much with Mario tip-toeing around the training course and getting his kidneys Donkey-Konga'd. Let's also address the elephant in the room: Chris Pratt is not going to sound like the Mario we know. He sounds like he'll fit the character archetype Mario is filing for this movie, but he's not going to be able to do the 'Marioisms' we're expecting very well, whether we were looking for Charles Martinet's ultra-Italian interpretation or Captain Lou's Italian-American Brooklynite. Let's get past that.
Let me just briefly say, King Kranky Kong got a big chuckle out of me, though I'm disappointed we didn't get to HEAR Seth Rogan's DK.
I'm also loving how they're representing Luigi's understated courage. He's clearly out-of-his-gourd with terror being confronted by Bowser, but he's holding on and not ratting out his brother.
Peach's reveal is great. Having grown up with 'Princess Toadstool' on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, I've been disappointed with the more girly, less pro-active Peach we've had since Mario 64. This Peach is clearly a strong leader and more (again) pro-active than the game version, which is nice, but she feels like her pendulum may have swung just a hair too far in the other direction. On an aesthetic note, I think the Illumination style has hit her a little harder than it hit Mario and it's softened her face a bit much.
Seeing Peach's castle, I'm wondering how many Mario 64 paintings we'll be able to spot during the movie.
Cute as the 'Look at us, we're adorable!' line is, seeing the Toads not having the confidence to stand up for themselves is a little disheartening, especially since we've seen them armed for battle before.
Seeing the Tanooki Suit was cool, but I LOVED the way they showed Peach taking on the power of the Fire Flower (possibly even including a pallet switch with her dress). Watching our primaries leading an army of Kongs in Karts down Rainbow Road was ALMOST epic, and it shows that they're trying to pull in aspects from as many corners of Mario lore as possible.
The most significant thing in the trailer, I think, is not an image, but a line. 'There's a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies. They're all counting on us.' This line shows that this movie has adopted the Super Mario Galaxy cosmology for its world. This opens up a lot of possibilities, including the possibility of Rosalina being in the film (likely only as a cameo or post-credit reveal). This could even portend the Ultimate cinematic possibility: a Smash Multiverse.

Knightfall
Posted 3 years agoIt's the end of an era. I just learned that Kevin Conroy, the voice 98% of us hear in our heads when someone says 'Batman,' has passed away. There have been other good Batmen, but none will ever be able to fill his shoes. Let me leave you with words from the OTHER iconic voice of B:TAS.

Most dachshund anthros on this site have STANDARD human proportions. Very few try to mimic (even with clothing) anything close to real dachshund proportions, and given that it's probably the breed's most distinctive trait, that's a real shame.

Tearful news from Tinsel Town

Her 80 year acting career has blessed us with marvelous performances and memorable characters, from the redoubtable Jessica Fletcher to the motherly Mrs. Potts to the noble Eglantine Price.
She will be sorely missed.

A linguistic puzzle (take notes)
Posted 3 years agoWhat is a 'cliff'?
We all picture the same thing when we hear the word: a sheer vertical face of rock that towers over our heads. But does it have to tower over us? How big does something need to be a cliff'? Is there even a requirement? Would the side of a paving stone be considered a 'cliff'? If there is a minimum height, what is it? What do you call a stone face smaller than that height? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Disney Mermaid Theory
Posted 3 years agoSo developing a new OC has had me thinking about the Disney design for mermaids. Specifically, I've been wondering what is the deal with the diaphanous frill around the waste of Disney merfolk. My theory: they are the gills of the merfolk. What do you think? Does anyone have confirmation one way or the other? Comment below.
Random inspiration of the day.
Posted 3 years agoDecided to watch my favorite scene from the movie Species tonight and I had a flash of inspiration.
A screen saver where slimy tentacles break through your screen image and cover the screen. You could set it for different colors, different varieties of 'slime,' or different random mutations (eyes, claws, mouths, etc) to add variety to the image.

Can anyone confirm this for me?
Posted 3 years agoI haven't seen Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness yet, but I DID allow my curiosity about one thing get the better of me, and I absolutely SQUEED to find it was true. In the light of this, however, I developed a theory, and before I see the movie, I was wondering if anyone could attest to any evidence other than a musical sting.
My theory is:
That's not Charles Xavier-10005. That's Charles Xavier-92131!!!!
If anyone has seen other evidence to support this, let me know (don't tell me the evidence, just that it exists).

Anyone want a Scooby Snak?
Posted 3 years agoJust thought I'd bring your attention to a little project that dropped on YouTube recently.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVrYAkeFVeY
I first saw a trailer for this about a year ago and the first episode is finally here. It's a (somewhat) gritty reimagining of Scooby-Doo in the vein of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina or Riverdale. I found it entertaining, and there are plenty of references to the classic stories. I didn't care for their characterization of Daphne, but that's a minor complaint. If you're a Scooby-Doo fan I suggest you consider giving this show a shot. The second episode is up for funding on Indigogo.

My Thoughts On the Dr. Seuss Discontinuations
Posted 4 years agoJust thought I'd put my two cents in on this. In case you haven't heard (I hadn't until today), the estate of Dr. Seuss has decided to discontinue 6 of his earlier stories because they contain depictions of racial stereotypes that are now considered offensive. Though most of these are lesser known works, it DOES include the legendary 'And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.'
Like I'm sure many of you have, my first reaction was 'Cancel culture strikes again.' Upon looking into thing a little more, I don't believe that is what has happened. This is apparently a move the Estate has been considering for a long time, and I know for a fact that Ted Geisel himself had stated that he regretted similar choices he had made in other situations in the past. Still, the outright removal of these books is an extreme reaction, IMHO. As ABC Australia pointed out, there are other ways to react to such situations, such as the disclaimers Disney+ added to several episodes of The Muppet Show.
My suggestion to the Estate would be to not remove these stories permanently. The offensive imagery could be modified and replaced in future editions. This may be more difficult in cases where the images are strongly connected to the text, but mostly it could probably be passed by. Don't rob future generations of some of the best introductory literature ever conceived just because you want to be more PC.

A culinary conundrum
Posted 5 years agoSo the latest random thing to pop into my head was this: If someone asked me to create a 'dessert hot dog,' how would I do it? Sounded like an interesting culinary experiment, so I followed it through.
The easiest part was the bun. Sponge cake. Something like angel food or a Twinkie. You could also do a donut-style cake for more of a hoagie/pretzel roll type of bun.
Replicating toppings was a cinch, too. Hot dogs come in a dozen different styles with scores of different ingredients. Just like ice cream toppings. Strawberry sauce for ketchup, butterscotch for mustard, whipped cream or coconut for sauerkraut, jelly beans or gummy candies for relish. The possibilities are endless.
The hardest part was coming up with a substitute for the hot dog itself. I needed something that was firm, but also soft, that has a relatively uniform flavor, and whose flavor stood out against both the toppings and the bun. Then it hit me: a candy bar.
The specific candy bar I thought of was a Three Musketeers bar. The chocolate nougat would give the softness while the chocolate coating would give the firmness, while the flavor would be consistent throughout. It was very close to what I was looking for, but I worry it might still be slightly too soft.
I thought I'd put it to you. What kind of candy bar would you use in a dessert hot dog? Also, what toppings would you put on yours?
