My new artist name will be "Jank", I think. I can do line-art, ink and color, but my own drawings will look just like that until I properly learn anatomy, 3D, and plenty of things over the next few years. A lot has happened, and most of the people I used to know are likely not here anymore. But if I do any of my own artwork in this genre, it will be here.

Wondering why more fursuits aren't built like this? Drop the "baggy" mascot look. :)
And yes, really hoping there is a female in this suit. :P

Goal
Posted 13 years agoGiving myself permission to suck
Posted 13 years agoThought that night get someone's attention. :)
I was at FurFright last weekend. After not attending a convention in 5 years I actually liked this one and will go again next year. One of the activities my friend Netasha wanted me to try was an art trade panel. The goal was to draw a baseball-card sized badge of another persons' fursona. I hammed it up well enough until the actual drawing part came. From there, I literally freaked out.
The person whose fursona I was supposed to model my drawing from had an *incredible* badge. It was clean, detailed, and a great representation of the character. I didn't recognize the artist, or likely couldn't at the time because from there, my ability to draw anything was frozen in place. Sketches produced nothing usable. Time was running out. I started to sweat and fidget. At first, I thought the panel was full of accomplished artists who just wanted a fun exercise. For the first time I actually felt anxious enough to just quit, get up and leave the room at that instant. If Netasha wasn't there to talk to me outside the room, I likely would have. Thanks again, Nash. :)
Most that know (or knew) me in FA are aware of my digital coloring from years ago. After a few years of doing it, it was relatively good, to the point that I actually looked competent. :) When it came (or comes to) to drawing, however, abilities don't even come close to it. There's some potential, but I usually want to throw the pad out the window, or spend so much time trying to "perfect" a drawing that it's no fun anymore. AlexSpastic - someone bless him - tried teaching me a while back. One of the things he would often say was to "loosen up your lines." or "don't be so quick to ink your lines". At the time, I just didn't try to understand what he was trying to say. I badly wanted my drawings to look like his, or his friends. They had to look like Max Blackrabbit or gNAW, or Aja Williams. I wanted the drawings to match the digital paintings I could do. Drawing wasn't enjoyable, and for the most part, I stopped. Worse, I stopped coloring because I felt like I was bound to fail that, too. Life caught up with me and I haven't colored anything in 2-3 years.
This particular video was mentioned in Lifehacker today. It's partially why I decided to post a journal here. Even if it doesn't change my current situation, for a few new artists that really enjoy drawing, but feel discouraged by what they're producing now, it is something to put your current work in perspective.
http://vimeo.com/24715531
The greatest part of the video is how it captures the essence of what I'm feeling, and what you may feel about your work. You intrinsically know it can look better, but you have to "suck" first and keep going for that to happen.
I've known of the furry genre since the early years of college, and unbeknownst to most of my friends in current life, I still enjoy the drawings that come from it. The video is basically what friends have tried to tell me for years, back when I drew for fun. Never give up, keep working on it, and work a lot. It's okay to suck. :)

If anthro animals were real, would they still look hot?
Posted 13 years agoSorry - my topic title was cut short because of a word limit. :3
Though I don't post new artwork coloring (or artwork at all in a long while), I still appreciate it. That said, I can dream about a pretty human female all day, but not once have I managed to do that with an anthro character. Perhaps I haven't wrapped my head the concept of how they could look as attractive as a human does. I look at drawn artwork and sure, there's something that immediately works, though most are not rendered realistically so I accept it as such.
I would like to know what you think. With all of the artwork out there, if these furry characters were made to appear as realistic as though they could walk among us, would they still look as attractive as we've often drawn them? If so, what would make them attractive to you (we're not talking bestiality, of course), and how close to human would you go?

Wakfu
Posted 15 years agoSaw a photo of the Wakfu's pandagirl at New York Comic Con, and thought "Damn that is an awesome drawing" So I looked up Wakfu on Google and discovered that it's a MMORPG, game for the Nintendo DS, TV series and all that. What rock have I been living under?

Ignore some of the adult stuff if need be, but the artwork inspired by the game is superb!

An Elysian Tail - entry for XBox/Doritos Dream Build Play
Posted 16 years agoHey all!
Almost a decade ago, I hosted a fan website for Foxglove - an adorable bat character from Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers. (Now located here - http://foxglove.cdrrhq.ru/) An artist that went by the name "Noogy" told me he that Foxglove was one of the reasons he got into drawing and illustration, and shared some great fan art with me (http://foxglove.cdrrhq.ru/fanart/artp6.html#noogy)
Well, as it turns out, he was also developing a story for an animated film called Elysian Tail. Over the past decade, he has pretty much garnered a wide range of talents. You can now add "game developer" to that list, as he has entered "Elysian Tail" the video game to the XBox/Doritos Dream Build Play contest. I'm happy to say that he's no slouch - the game looks GORGEOUS!
I'm just happy to know this guy followed a longtime dream of his over several years, building a franchise that has charm and real potential to be a success. If you have a moment, check out an interview he did for XBox Indies, and watch the YouTube video. Seriously, it's a kick-ass entry, and for furries that love video games featuring them in some way, you have to appreciate the effort he put into this.

PS: Check out the fairy-style char that follows Dust around (YouTube - 1:23). Haven't confirmed with Dean yet, but I believe that she is based on Foxglove!

I'm drawing again, and will keep drawing.
Posted 16 years agoBack in 2003, a good friend named
AlexSpastic collaborated with a coloring of Taz and Lola. He was happy at the way I colored it, and told me that with practice, I could possibly draw that well, too. For several months over two years, I'd hang at his place and practice drawing. He knew I was uptight in trying to get it "perfect" from the beginning, and tried encouraging me to relax and continue. It's been a while since I've seen him. He's still drawing and knowing right, practicing his techniques on the same checklist he gave me to work on.
Drawing, for the most part, remained a small hobby for several years now. For a while I'd draw for several days, then scoff at my failures and let life distract me from continuing. Every time I went back to drawing yielded the same result, but I kept coming back to it. Each time I wanted to feel like I could do it - to draw for fun and learn over the years. Above all, most of my friends in the fandom are good artists, and despite being able to color, I felt so out of the loop. They'd draw fan art or con sketches, have art jams and talk about cool stuff, while I'd hopelessly sketch something, then give up halfway out of frustration and embarrassment.
I wanted to stop putting off learning to improve and stop making excuses.
Tonight, I wrote a plan to practice drawing each day for 1/2 hour to 1 hr. Each day, I will complete a new topic from a list of several, such as drawing 10 hands, or five human heads. The weekends will have 2-3 hours to catch up on missed topics assigned during the week, and spend at least 1 hour reading a drawing topic from a specific book. Whatever time is left is spent implementing the topic I read.
At the end of the month, I will complete one picture. Either a new subject will get a complete line drawing, inking and coloring, or an existing drawing will get a full ink-job, or coloring. For now, those original drawings will be fan-art or long-overdue dedications to their fursonas.
I really like drawing in the anime/furi style - kinda like the JenKiwi drawing (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/853886/), so that is the style I'd like to focus on. :)
Why am I posting a journal entry about it? This approach encourages me not to quit again, given I'm expected to draw nearly every day and show the results. I also expect to fail many, many times. Someone is bound to throw a bone and tell me how I could improve it.
Day 1 is Wednesday. Most times I'll draw human features, and then some furry stuff for shits n' giggles. :)
Thankfully, Alex also taught me to avoid trying to be popular in this fandom. I love it for the type of artwork depicted here, and already know there's no popularity outside of it. But it's where most of my drawing buddies are, and for once, I'd like to eventually contribute to an art jam with the confidence, fun, and creativity that they have.
Someone out there, please wish me luck.

Metamorphic Force
Posted 16 years agoI wonder if anyone in the furry genre ever heard about this game. You'd think it was a popular game, but I've honestly never heard about it until today. It's one of those 4-player beat-em-up games Konami was popular with back in the '90s. It actually looks and sounds great!

Otakon - who from FA is coming?
Posted 16 years agoUnfortunately, I can't hang with the crazies this year at Anthrocon. Don't have enough vacation time due to a Vegas trip in May. :")
Still, I'm hanging with the beautiful young ladies of the Sisterhood down at Otakon in Baltimore, July 16-18. That's
indigoAngelcat,
jenkiwi, their friends Debbie and Mandy. I promised them that I'd behave. :3
Who else is coming to Otakon? If you see a young-looking guy that has no business wearing a muscle shirt and donning a messenger bag, surrounded by women that I should have no business hanging around, that's me.
WE WILL RAVE! :D

Sherlock Hound: Full Episodes on YouTube!
Posted 16 years agoIf you've never seen this cartoon before, Sherlock Hound is an obvious furry anime nod to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. I have the original DVDs, and by far SH is the most charming and fun take on the Holmes theme. YouTube recently started offering all of the episodes - in full - available here:

Brutal Paws of Fury Sega CD Mp3s
Posted 16 years agoWorking on a mobile Flash game for my Finals and wanted to include some awesome techno-punk music in it. I remembered that Brutal: Above the Claw for the 32x (yes, I'm really dating myself there) had some great samples. The Sega CD, however, has them in crystal clear quality as Mp3s. Managed to find the CD ISO and uploaded the all of the music as a zip.

Posted 16 years agoFurry Cons: Not tapping out altogether. :3
Posted 16 years agoOkay - I might've went a bit far by saying I'd be out of the game for a few years. The lovely ladies
IndigoAngelCat,
JenKiwi,
Red-Dog,
Kyote, &
auradeva are all showing up at AC. With luck, none of them will beat me up and maybe one will give me a hug. :3 So much goofiness to be had with them and friends there. I do get to draw when I'm there since the upstairs part of the convention is usually open and very quiet. So yesh - it looks like I'll show up at least one more con this year!
So what happened to my commission idea? It's not dead at all, but I gotta make some more time between classes. Currently learning some heavy-duty programming in both courses...not easy for someone who was a designer most of his life. One of the things I'd also like to do is flesh out my fursona (now a light brown Husky), and start drawing long overdue fan art of friends here.
What about drawing on the weekends?
Those will work.
Sweet! I'm glad we had this chat. :3

Furry cons. Tapping out.
Posted 17 years agoMuch as i enjoy the fandom for its artwork, I'm starting to realize that going to furry cons just isn't my thing. For the artist friends, it's a good opportunity to meet old and new friends and justify the trip by recouping the costs in the dealer room. This also means that nights are spent in the hotel room catching up on comissions. I definitely enjoy their company. Just not sure about the need to go to cons, since I'm not that prolific an an artist.
So what does this mean? Further Confusion will be my last con for a few years. That said, I acknowledge that half of the reason I don't enjoy cons as much is that I'm not a good artist, and never took comissions. My friends - like most artists in the fandom, are pretty level headed. They wouldn't do this if they didn't have good reasons to justify it.
I will start taking comissions at home - perhaps 1 or 2 a month until I can get into a system. Hopefully that might get me more comfortable with taking requests, and force me to draw more.
It's not the cons fault that I don't enjoy them, so perhaps the best thing to do is come back to them once I can do more in them.
Hoping this goes through, as I'm typing on an iPhone. Will drop comission details once I talk to my friends about it.

I've got two words for ya...
Posted 17 years agoNOM NOM. There, I said it. Picture something cute eating a cookie, okay?
Just came back from this club called Legends. This place is about 5 minutes from the nearest college. No one knows why this hotel bar is so freakin' packed every Friday night, but my bro and I get there and squeeze into the crowd, grab a drink and watch the ladies with loose tops fall out at least a dozen times. One dude in a wheelchair was touching *everyone*...gotta admire the guy cause the ladies loved him. He even touched this huge lady and she just backed up saying "oh no he DIDN'T"...Enjoy the hand, lady...seriously I don't think anyone else was up to the task. ;)
Rambling a bit over here, and just wanted to connect with old friends on here. Going to Anthrocon is becoming a tradition, so I may make it next year...little more buff than last year, I'm hoping. Netasha, Jen, Ellen, Tamen...shouts to ya'll. I had a blast in June!
Had to skip Vegas this year...my bros can't make it...should have some more time for stuff...any cons worth going in the new year?
Just came back from this club called Legends. This place is about 5 minutes from the nearest college. No one knows why this hotel bar is so freakin' packed every Friday night, but my bro and I get there and squeeze into the crowd, grab a drink and watch the ladies with loose tops fall out at least a dozen times. One dude in a wheelchair was touching *everyone*...gotta admire the guy cause the ladies loved him. He even touched this huge lady and she just backed up saying "oh no he DIDN'T"...Enjoy the hand, lady...seriously I don't think anyone else was up to the task. ;)

15 minutes of Fame
Posted 17 years agoI started posting some of my older stuff again on FA, since the last account wasn't accessible. Wouldn't you know but people came out of the woodworks to say "hi" and drop some really nice comments . It felt good again, kind of a darn good rush when people start to notice the things you help to create.
But dang if this isn't a classic tale of someone bringing up one's former glory. In a few days, things will be normal again, unless I come back with something. I know life doesn't always allow recreational time, and drawing for popularity sure doesn't make sense. But once in a while, at least I'd like to come home and do something other than work some more, or hit the books so hard.
Thanks to all who commented, watched and faved so far.

Getting Back on Track
Posted 18 years agoAt this very moment, my backup hard drive is transferring nearly 300GB worth of crap into a shiny new 2.8Ghz iMac. Folks, this thing is ALL screen - 24" wide and 1900 x 1200 resolution. After once sporting 2 large monitors to work with, it's nice to have that much screen real estate again. Best of all, it's getting 4GB of RAM in a few days. A geek's paradise? You bet.
So what do I plan to do with it?
Well, for the first few months, probably not much. Angry Viking Press employed me for much of this summer. I happily colored the cover for
Shonuff44's Coco Gun Bun #1, logos for Ratbat's Edenworld Saga and Karabiner's "Conquest of Dawn", a redesign for their website, plus dialogue and coloring touch-ups for Coco #1. It brought me to mid august, and classes start again in less than 3 weeks. There simply wasn't a lot of "me" time this summer, so aside from these creative endeavors, I haven't gotten any personal projects done.
Still, two sketchbooks actually had my scribblings this year at AC. The first was from
indigoangelcat and the second was drawn for her friend Kiwi - who from the appearance of her backside, has never touched a seat. ^_^=. It's a running gag; she's liable to beat me senseless...or have Natasha do it.
Hoping to get a scan of Kiwi sometime soon...it took 5 hours to draw in a quiet corner of AC's third floor balcony, but was worth every minute. That one came out really nice, especially for someone who hasn't drawn in over a year.
Speaking of AC...most of it was a blast! I got to meet Natasha, Jen, Tamen, Shawntae, Ronzo, Jason C, Brian, and his GF (who we noticed has very good advice about women) Jay Axer, Nick, Max, DC Rabbit, and the whole crew. Not sure what's happening next year given the 5-hour drive to Pittsburgh, but I'm not totally ruling out visiting again.
I'm going to focus on school and work for the next few months in hopes to keep both in good standing. The weekends should allow SOME time for recreation, so I hope to squeeze out a personal sketch or two when time allows. In the meantime, you'll probably see some older stuff coupled in with a few new pieces.
Better go...gotta finish those Gun-Bun touchups!
