Commissions & Life Update
Posted 9 months agoHey all - I feel a bit bad for not being as social as I used to be, but it's been a rough year and, well, you know how it is, I'm sure :V
About a year ago now, my husband was admitted to the emergency room in need of spinal surgery. Most of December was spent in the hospital - it actually wasn't too bad, all things considered - we even had a lovely little pizza party and watched movies together in his hospital room, and making the best of the situation didn't feel too hard at all (for me, at least).
Fast-forward several months of it, however, and it all started to add up. By mid-late summer, however, my husband was securely on the mend at last and able to get around and return to mostly-regular life, so that was great, but by then I was suffering burnout on a number of levels. Friends from the UK came to stay with us for a couple weeks which was wonderful, but had the side effect of bringing COVID with them - we'd avoided COVID all through the pandemic, only to finally catch it now! We actually hadn't even realised we had it, it was so minor - nothing more than a mild combination of headcold + stomach flu, it seemed... but then it never went away. For months. In fact, we still have it - long COVID! @_@ Again, it's not particularly bad, but god is it exhausting to feel perpetually under the weather...
Still, I think we've been fortunate this year in a number of ways. We didn't have to wait too long before my husband could have his back surgery. There were no complications. Our quality of life has been pretty decent! But between burn out and the rise of AI (which I do think has had an effect in the world of art commissions), I haven't been able to carry as much of the financial burden as I normally have, which brings me to the obligatory self-marketing...
Please consider the homemade bespoke gift of art for yourself and loved ones, from myself or any of the other wonderfully talented people here <3 While I have a small but much-appreciated number of loyal repeat clients, I could definitely use more work 🙏🏻❤️ Thank you so much for your consideration! ❤️🙏🏻
🎁💌🌲 Looking for gifts? Need custom art for your book or roleplaying game? 🎲🎮📘 I'm currently taking commissions of all kinds for December now! 🖌️🎨🖼️ Please PM or email me at jocarra[at]gmail.com for inquiries! I specialise in wildlife and fantasy art, and accept private and non private commissions for personal or commercial use - if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, or click here for more information!

I'm on Cara!
Posted a year agoIt's been a while coming, but without getting political (I suspect I don't have to), for a variety of reasons you can now find me on Cara:
https://cara.app/jocarra
I'm slowly working on building up my gallery again - revisiting old art can be fun, right? - but if you're on Cara, please give me a poke here or on the site so I can give you a follow!
I'll still be posting work here, but are there any other websites you'd recommend for working artists?

Sushi Go Jen!
Posted 5 years agoIt started as something to do during quarantine...
I'd played Sushi Go with friends in the UK, but now that we've moved back to Canada, I no longer have the game, sooo... I thought I'd make my own! For those unfamiliar, Sushi Go is a fast-paced deck-building card game that takes place in a Japanese food restaurant - you race your friends to grab the best items off the rotating conveyor belt to make the tastiest meal of them all. It's fun, simple, and fast, and prominently features artwork of adorable sushi.
Why combine animals with chibi sushi? Why not!? The cards are done now, and since a few people voiced interest, I'm making my own version available to print and play for free :)
Enjoy!
https://sta.sh/2wfuvcsepqa
For the actual game, look for Sushi Go or Sushi Go Party at your favourite retailers!

If you were on my list and an opportunity arises in my work schedule to fit you in you may receive an email from me, but otherwise I can't guarantee anything I'm afraid! Sorry! Otherwise feel free to give me a poke to check in :)

Update for Commissioners!
Posted 6 years agoHey all! Thanks again for all the support and interest, I really do appreciate it! However, I'm going to be taking the last little bit of the month off, and hopefully during this time, I'll hear back from my regular work about expected hours in July. If I get the chance, I'd still like to complete all those still on the waiting list, but I'll have to wait and see what work has to say at this point. As it stands, I will complete any commissions I have already begun - anyone who hasn't yet paid will keep their spot. I'll make another announcement at the beginning of July updating my availability and, if time allows, I'll get back to everyone's commissions then.
Thanks so much guys! Your interest and support is what keeps us afloat overseas here in the UK while my husband works on his PhD <3

Away
Posted 8 years agoSigh. My last journal wasn't the most cheerful, and I hate to say that this journal will be along similar lines.
When Casey and I had to move to the UK for his PhD program, we wanted to bring my animals with me but didn't have the time to make arrangements for them before we left, so they were left in the care of my inlaws. It took a while for us to get established, and by the time we got settled, my inlaws wouldn't return our emails about organising having them shipped to me. This continued until Casey finally pressed the issue back in February, and I found out that my ball python, Snake, had passed away. He was sweet and chill and I was sad to lose him, but my gargoyle gecko, Jormie, was still okay. I found out we would be visiting Vancouver again in a few months (ie. now), and we arranged it so that we could bring him home with me.
Then, after spending 28 hours in transit and being awake for nearly 40 hours straight, I got home to find out that Jormie, too, had passed away some time ago (they don't know when). I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you guys :( My animals deserved so much better. I feel terrible and wish I could have seen them again :(
And so that was the beginning of my "vacation." I'll be in Vancouver until July 30th, and most of the time until then will be spent camping because my husband was going into nature withdrawal after living in the UK for two years :b so I won't have very much work time or internet access, I'm afraid. So yeah, head's up: I won't be around much this month (July).
... So I was thinking I'd like to memorialise my animals by commissioning some sort of sculpture of them. I've seen pendants of crystals and raw gemstones and things with personalized sculptures of pet snakes and geckos, and was interested in maybe getting something similar for Snake, since he was very relaxed and loved to be "worn." As for Jormie, he was quirky and a bit antisocial, and loved to watch things sneakily from under plant cover, so I was thinking of having a life-sized sculpture of him that I could maybe put in a potted plant. Can anyone recommend me a good sculptor who could do this? Thanks so much <3

Changes
Posted 8 years agoWell, I was going to write a new journal about my laptop problems, but I recently got news that my ball python, Ozy (usually known simply and lovingly as Snake), passed away late last year :( I have been worried about him a lot over the past year, since I had to move away to the UK again and leave him behind in Canada with my in-laws, so in a way it wasn't exactly a shock, but I still feel rather terrible about him - he was pretty young for a snake still, only 6, and he had the sweetest, chillest, most placid demeanour I could have ever asked for. I'll miss you, Snake. Fission Mailed :(
In non-pet-related news, yes, my laptop was nearly seven years old, and after its optical drive and a number of its keys on its keyboard all broke, its fan crapped out and it started repeatedly overheating, its plug developed a worrisome sparking habit, and finally it started crashing and failing to reboot for no apparent reason, Pickles has finally been retired. It's been a stressful month trying to work out the bugs, but there was just no saving it, and I've had to resort to getting a new laptop on a budget - it's nice enough, although not as top-of-the-line as Pickles was in his day, but at least I can keep working and I backed up most everything beforehand. I DID intend to open for some freelance commissions this month, but problems with my laptop resulted in me really not having the time anymore. Sorry guys!
God, what else is new? Same old, same old. Husband's still working on his PhD thesis which is coming along well. Harborne is extremely nice to live in, so much nicer than Bearwood, and our room mates are great, and nerdy enough that we all get together for Magic games every other night or so. We miss our friends back in Canada, but we still manage to Skype once in a while and get a few more sessions in for our ancient D&D campaign that we're desperately trying to keep going despite it all. I'm still plugging along on Endless Realms work, but it seems the development team is going into a bit of a review phase and so I might have a bit less to do coming up - I'll try to give people a head's up if I think I'll be opening for commissions!
Anyway, I think that's all for now. Sigh.

Back from Germany
Posted 9 years agoHaha, okay, so I never told anyone I was going to Germany before I left, but anyway, was gone for two weeks, but I'm back now ;) My mother-in-law was in Europe with a friend and took Casey and I on a trip - we met up in Prague for two nights before catching a train to the Black Forest where we did some sight-seeing and hiking, then caught a day cruise up the Rhine before heading back to Birmingham. We ate much in the way of meat and potatoes o_o I don't usually write lengthy journals anymore, but I found I ended up forgetting a lot of the neat details from our last trip, so I'm writing them out this time :b
Prague was really neat, beautiful architecture, but crowded. Coincidentally, the "Blade for Hire" image I painted recently... well, I had searched for references of cool medieval taverns, and it turned out the tavern I drew the most inspiration from is in Prague! We ate there the second night.
We also tried a trdelnik, which is a hollow sweet pastry roll that was being sold everywhere in Prague and made the streets smell perpetually like waffles  - we have actually had them before at the Richmond Night Market and were severely underwhelmed by what tasted like a bland cardboard tube with a scraping of custard inside, so we almost gave them a pass, but seriously, authentic trdelniks are actually quite delicious! Chewy and sweet, dusted with sugar, and as the ice cream melts, it infuses the pastry with its flavour :3~
After Prague, we made our way to Rothenburg in Germany, which is notable as a fully-walled medieval town. We opted to not go on the Night Watch tour since there were a ton of tourists, and instead returned to the wall around midnight and walked it then - it was actually pretty surreal, perfectly silent and dark and empty, and if you're a fantasy or history buff, it was a lot of fun to actually experience walking a medieval wall in the middle of the night. It's entirely different from what you can experience while shoulder-to-shoulder with dozens of tourists gradually queuing their way around in a line. The only thing that was missing was the extra sense of danger - the walls in Rothenburg had wooden railing which wouldn't have been there back in the day! But we were glad for it, since we didn't have a light with us and had to navigate the stairs, towers and walls entirely in the dark :b
Our next stop was Füssen - our hotel was nestled at the foot of the Alps, edged by forest and just a two minute walk from a lake, which frankly reminded both of us a lot of British Columbia - to rub in the Northwest nostalgia, however, it was also pouring in rain :V We went for a walk anyway, and found an adorable little black salamander on one of the trails enjoying the shower. He seemed liable to be stepped on where he was, so I shooed him into the underbrush where hopefully he remained safe :3.
We visited Freiburg after that, which Casey wasn't as fond of, but the Minster was beautiful, and perhaps our favourite European cathedral we've visited. There's a lovely market surrounding the building that we grabbed some street goodies from before heading inside just in time, coincidentally, for a live pipe organ performance. I'll spare you all the gushy details, but I never had heard a live pipe organ performance before, and as a passionate music lover, being immersed in waves of sound from the various surrounding pipes worked into the architecture at multiple points was thrilling and I think I'm going to be a little disappointed every time I listen non-live, non-surround sound pipe organ music :b ((How often could that be, you ask, that I listen to pipe organ? Probably every day, among a variety of other eclectic music genres :b))
We also went to Schlossberg tower, which sits atop the hill beside the city and overlooks the valley, commanding an impressive view. We convinced Casey's mother to join us despite her being terrified of heights and hiked up the 500m hill only to find the tower had been closed for maintenance and repair! Well, rather disappointed, we, uh, jumped the gate and went up there anyway, haha (Casey's mother remained below, watching apprehensively :b). On the plus side, there was no one else up there, so that was neat... it certainly wobbled when you stand on the very top, though (its distinctive spiraling supports were notably absent that day), so what we did was very much at our own risk :b Worth it, though!
Triberg was next, which was, despite the tourist-iness of it, really quite nice. It boasted at least two wonderful shops featuring beautiful hand-carved wood pieces - tribal masks, rugged animal statues, walking sticks, chess sets - and, of course, it had cuckoo clocks. Now, I never really cared about cuckoo clocks before Casey, but anyone with an appreciation for art should love visiting the Master Carving Club shop, who uphold the highest traditional standards in cuckoo clock-making. The artisans were very passionate about their craft, and it was wonderful hearing them talk about their work.
Triberg is the home of cuckoo clocks, but also the original Black Forest cake (which is way boozier than we make it in North America!) and Germany's second highest waterfalls. Although filled with tourists and fairly standard compared to the waterfalls you can find all over the Northwest, the waterfalls were really enjoyable and we enjoyed hiking up them and down again, although the real hiking took place at our next destination just outside the resort city of Baden-Baden, where we hiked at least 30km over the course of two days (Casey's mother opted to skip out on those :b) through the Black Forest and the neighbouring castle ruins of Altes Schloss, which features a very cool windharp, an instrument I had never encountered before and would enjoy having.
We didn't actually explore much of the city proper in Baden-Baden, although we did visit the Lichtentaler Allee park and gardens, which did a great job of incorporating sprawling green space, striking older architecture, and stylish modern establishments.
After Baden-Baden, we caught a cruise up the Rhine before eventually travelling by train back to Birmingham, where Casey's mother wanted to see around the city - while perhaps expecting more from the city (it's not exactly a shiny tourist city out to impress :b), she enjoyed Brindley Place and got to see the Bull Ring and the crazy mirrored monstrosity that is Central Station :V. We also met up with some distant relatives that live in Coleshill and took a day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon together.
Then, quite abruptly it seemed, I'm back to sitting in our ghetto flat in Bearwood that still has no furniture and has had no hot water for almost three months now because the landlord refuses to pay to fix the boiler. lol. Being away was nice while it lasted!

When prompted, please send your payment in USD to my Paypal ( jocarra[at]gmail.com ). You can either send the money to me for goods/services, or I can create an invoice for you. Finally, tips are absolutely not expected or required, but very much appreciated! Thank you!
PREFERRED SUBJECTS
I will happily consider most any species, character, or subject matter, adult or no. As a general rule, though...
More preferred subjects = wildlife/nature, anthro/were, fantasy/tribal, dark/horror/monsters, romantic/sensual adult
Less preferred subjects = urban/industrial, technical/mechanical, graphic/extreme adult
There are a few adult/fetish-related themes I straight-up won't do. These include scat, fart and vomit-related fetishes, and obviously underaged (infants/cubs/prepubescents) characters in sexual situations. I also tend to dislike "extreme" adult art
(eg. extreme hyper, extreme fat, extreme cum, extreme bulging, etc.) - if you're not sure your idea falls into this category of "too extreme", feel free to ask :)
WHAT YOU'LL GET
My appreciation! <3 You'll get a maximum quality JPG or PNG, and optional PSD/AI file(s); size/resolution depends on product (eg. icon vs full illustrations). Every time I send you an image (sketch, WIP, finished product), you may ask me to make a few minor revisions if necessary (eg. "Could you make his paws a bit bigger?" "Could you make her eyes darker?") - if you wait to ask for a revision (eg. waiting until the finished product to say you'd like an entirely different pose), I likely will be unable to do so :( (at least, not without incurring extra cost, I'm afraid!)
TERMS OF SERVICE
Unless otherwise negotiated ahead of time...
• I must be able to contact you reliably. Failure to respond in a timely manner (within two weeks) may result in you losing your commission spot.
• I require an advance payment (either in part or in full) for all commissions, due when I'm ready to begin work.
• A rough sketch and multiple WIPs will be sent to you for review and revisions - major/multiple changes requested after revisions are done may result in additional costs at my discretion.
• We both have the right to publicly display the artwork online or elsewhere, or otherwise make personal usage of the artwork.
• In cases of adult subject matter, you assert and affirm that you are of legal age to view and purchase items of an adult nature by commissioning me.
• I retain ALL commercial rights to the artwork. You cannot make commercial use of my artwork without my permission.
• You retain ALL commercial rights to your personal characters in the artwork. I cannot make commercial use of your characters without your permission.
• I retain the right to modify, edit, or reuse the artwork in part or whole following commission completion at my discretion.

• You retain the right to cancel a commission at any time for any reason, but money cannot be refunded for work already done (even if incomplete). Cancelling a commission results in your losing your commission spot.
Thank you for your consideration!

Looking back on art...
Posted 10 years agoIn 2014, I produced 119 illustrations, a little more if you include some icons I made for Endless Realms...
78 Endless Realms images
34 freelance commissions
2 gifts
That leaves just 5 left over. I made 5 images that were just for fun, 5 images that weren't "work." They weren't much, but they include:
1 sketch for a portrait of Ash I never painted
1 chibi cartoon of a "pho lizard"
1 large cartoon for Halloween
2 portraits, one for Jayli and one for Luke
So... now it's 2015, and so far, I've done 111 illustrations, excluding the book buddies I just did for Endless Realms, along with a t-shirt project I was working on with growltiger. That's...
96 Endless Realms images
13 freelance commissions
2 gifts
No personal art this year.
...
Yeah, I thought that was pretty bad, too. To be fair, though, I had forgotten to count this picture of cartoon mini-foods I had started this year as something to try to relax with, but still. I thought 5 pieces of personal art over an entire year in which 2 of them took less than an hour was pretty bad, but this year was worse o_O
A little distressed, I mentioned it to my husband: part of the problem with doing so much artwork as the breadwinning job for the household is that, well, frankly, when I DO have time off, I don't really WANT to do art. But clearly, I WANT to want to, so he's given me an assignment, a "faux commission" if you will :b "Draw something with the following three things you like in it: something hunky, some kind of fantasy creature, and some sort of food."
It's funny, I was actually a bit bent out of shape about it at first. WHAT?! What kind of weird picture would that be?! Why can't I just do more art for my story since I haven't done any for over a year? THIS IS JUST MORE WORK >8E But then I chilled out and started thinking about it.
That's the trick, you know. That's how I manage to keep going doing commission artwork, constantly creating works for people of worlds that aren't mine, ideas that aren't mine, characters that aren't mine - you have to get passionate about what the idea has to offer, think about what makes the creator so excited and enamored with the idea that they want to pay to have art made of it. If you can empathize with the person, get inside their head and feel what they feel, then you can do it.
Except this time, it wasn't very hard, because the ideas were my own favourite things - I just had to come up with a way to combine them...
And I did. I'm even pretty excited about it! It's not done, but I don't care - at least I made something. I really just wanted to mention this, if only to myself as a recording of it actually happening, just in the off-chance it slips away into the graveyard of forgotten unfinished art. But if we're lucky, I'll manage to paint it some time this month :)
So sorry, guys. I probably could have taken the time to do more commission auction bids instead, but, well, I figured I owed myself at least one personal picture this year :V

Auction Winners Announced!
Posted 10 years agoAlright! First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who sent me a bid for my silent auction – I appreciate the support, even though I wasn’t able to select all of you. Secondly, the winners! I’ve selected
Siegmar’s full illustration,
Tabra’s pin-up, and
Constantius’s sketch – if I get the time, I will try to select additional winners from the received bids :)
As for an update on our move, we made it to Birmingham in one piece, our luggage intact, just in time for Casey’s faculty welcome party :3 I quite like Birmingham, a lot greener than I expected, and the university campus is quite nice, although we kind of got stuck in a bit more “humble” of a flat than we expected – aside from a lumpy coverless mattress, we have zero furniture, cutlery, dishware/glassware, or towels/linens of any kind, so we have some shopping to do :b Maybe it’s just our inexperience as renters, but our last shared flat had some basic common linens/dishes/etc. for everyone to use, so I guess I was expecting sort of the same – we left almost everything except clothing and our laptops at home. Ah well :b We were hoping to eventually find a single studio room for us, rather than a shared home, so it’s not that terrible for us to start accumulating stuff now.
Anyway, thanks again for all the support and well-wishes! Hopefully, if I get the time, I will be able to take more commissions in the future!

Auction/Move Update!
Posted 10 years agoThank you everyone who has wished me well on my impending move, and bid so far on my silent auction - bidding is still open, so if you're interested, please email me an offer :) I'm not looking at who is offering the highest price, so don't be discouraged! In all honesty, I would love to complete everyone's commission who asks - as time becomes available to me, I will try to fit more in <3 Those bids that aren't initially accepted may be able to be accepted later on :)
We move on the 23rd, and we arrive in Birmingham on the 24th, ready to face the next four or so years together in a brand new (quite ancient) country... again XD - I'll likely be quite busy with things as the move draws closer, but should be able to respond to emails and things in a timely manner. We still haven't found a place, despite looking all month and messaging a ton of people, but, well, we'll make do :V It's sort of reassuring that, short of experiencing some sort of horrible emergency in the midst of our trip, I don't think things could realistically go much worse than they did last time XD Famous last words, right? :b Anyway, I think that's all I need to say about that for now :b
Finally, please go give tickthecrux a visit! He's selling adoptables to help raise money to fix his car - check it out here.

Commissions Opening! Help us move overseas <3
Posted 10 years agoEDIT: Winners have been selected and my auction is now CLOSED. However, if you're interested in being picked in the future, you may continue to send me your commission ideas along with your desired budget, and I can hopefully pick you in the future, time permitting! :)
* * * * *
Finally! I will be opening for limited, digital-only commissions at the end of September/beginning of October!
Casey and I are moving overseas again to the UK for his PhD program, and so any help with our (uncomfortably tight x_x) finances during this time would be greatly appreciated! <3 I'm normally fairly busy with Endless Realms work, but I should have a bit more free timethe next coming month or two, so I've decided to hold a SILENT AUCTION - BIDDING OPENS NOW! Contact me privately with your bid and a description of what you'd like done :) Email is strongly preferred ( jocarra@gmail.com) - a subject header like "(Your Username)'s Commission" or "(Your Username)'s Auction Bid" would be most helpful! Including at least one reference image would also be helpful, but isn't necessary. If you want the image to be kept private, need commercial rights for it, or have a particular printing format in mind, I need to know that, too. Thanks!
I hope to leave bidding open until the end of September... ish, depending on the responses I get. I MAY have time for multiple commissions (eg. one large commission, one medium one, and one small), so don't feel like I'll be motivated purely by who's willing to pay the most :b I'll be looking at your various ideas and how much time I'll have available, and seeing what I can fit in. I know some people hate how auctions inflate the prices of commissions, and I also know first-come first-served policies can result in people who have unfortunate working/sleeping hours getting left out, so I hoped doing this would be a little more fair for everyone :)
So... Yeah! TL;DR - Email me your idea, name your price, and I'll see who I can fit in! I'll announce the winning bid(s) once the auction closes. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below :)

Prices are based on an estimate of how long a commission will take me at a rate of $25USD/hr. I've listed commonly requested products below with examples - if you don't see an example of what you want, I can still probably do it! Just ask :)

PAYMENT
Payment is due when I'm ready to begin your commission. Please do not pay before I am ready unless previously negotiated, thanks! When prompted, please send your payment in USD to my Paypal ( jocarra[at]gmail.com ). You can either send the money to me for goods/services, or I can create an invoice for you. Partial payment plans are available for larger commissions, but full payment is required before I can give you the final product.

Missed Endless Realms Submissions
Posted 11 years agoI posted the first submission on the 29th despite the administrator warning, as I didn't realize it was a guaranteed problem. Then I continued to post them because, well, screw it, I'll just post this obligatory journal after it's all worked out. So now that (hopefully) it's all worked out, here they are in a bundle!
