Having to explain DND and Magic to a potential Employer.....
Posted 11 years agoSo I went to a job interview today to work at a morgue, had my suit dry cleaned, and showed up showered and presentable.
As the interview starts she asks me if I'm okay with not being paid for the first month, and only get hired on probation if I do get the position. I tell her this is fine with me, and the interview goes on and she begins looking at my resume.
So upon my Resume I have written "President of Secret Sword and Sorcery Society" and "Vice president of Gamer's Guild" and she proceeded to ask me what those things were and why they were relevant.
I told her Gamers Guild was a club founded on UCR's campus for tabletop games, but is mostly centered around Magic the Gathering. I explained that being a Vice president of the club meant I had to alloquot funds and help organize for our larger events. Each quarter UCR Gives both Gamer's Guild and SS&SS 400 dollars each for club based events. So more often then not when I help my housemate Clement run peasant tournaments, draft tournaments, FNM and the like, I request appropriated funds and organize these events at large, usually trying to accommodate 50+ people. Which isn't incredibly large but requires a level head.
Then told her SS&SS was founded by me because I noticed not many people were into Role playing games, and I wanted to accommodate those people. Again the whole using money and aloquoting funds became relevant because I have incredibly good organizational skills, when it comes to management of paperwork and such.
So here's the rub. She asked me "What's a role playing game" and I being flustered was kinda like "It's like...we make characters..but with rules, kinda like impromptu storytelling. Have you ever played Dungeons and Dragons?"
"No"
"Oh....world of darkness? Shadowrun? GURPS?"
"No"
"Oh...well those are systems we use for roleplay...They dictate the parameters that make character creation possible"
"Oh...so what is 'Magic the Gathering?"
"It's a tabletop card game where you play the role of a wizard and the deck of cards represents your spell arsenal, and you have 20 life...the goal is to play against someone else who is playing with a deck of spells and reduce their life to zero."
I then saw her write down on her clipboard. "Likes to play pretend with rules, and is into witchcraft, potential hire"
....what? XD

Posted 11 years agoThere's good news about reflection. Meditation has been taking off a lot of the stress that I do have, but some of the stress I have I can now identify the stems.
The crux of it is, the uncertainty that I have for my own future.
For those of you who do not know, my parents are funding my way through my undergrad years. (They cover my tuition, and rent on the apartment I have, as well as allocate me a small budget for groceries from time to time) and while I've been able to just sort of "exist" it occurs to me that even though I'm getting my bachelors degree in forensic anthropology I've never had a job before, or an internship or anything. I mean there's been hints at an opportunity to talk with the District Attorney of LA for an internship, but I'm starting to hit panic mode....should I have been doing these things earlier? Is it too late for me to start interning and making myself applicable for grad school, vocational school, or a job when I finish in 2 years?
I feel like part of this falls onto myself, I let myself just...exist without realizing that in 2 years I'm cut off, and I love my parents for doing that. I never wanted to be someone to just leech off of affluent parents, but I'm now wondering what I can do to start building up report for the job market, or even grad school.....input is loved, and it'll probs ease the paranoia.

A new updated feeling on life

Life is....amazing to me...how one can keep growing, and changing how they view the world. I'm proud to say I've grown since high school, and have abandoned old mentalities and gained new ones. Exchanged a certain type of friend for another.
I thought I wasn't happy with life, but then I realized..I wasn't trying to live MY life. When I realized the friends I have, and how lucky I am to be in the position I am I realized something. I'm not where I want to be at in life right now, but the means and the way of getting there is just as important as the end result.
Humans.....life...is amazing, we grow, and shed old mentalities for new ones. I suppose the jist of this message is, don't be upset when you don't see your life not at the point where you want it. Be happy that you're part of a journey. This is because we will never stop growing, changing and continuing to adapt...that's just life....if you can't accept that it's just one long process, you're going to be unhappy your entire life.
A smooth sea has never yielded a strong sailor.

Update on Arts
Posted 11 years agoHey all, I'm giving those of you on my Queue an update as to what's going on in the world.
First of all I feel really bad that some of y'all have waited this long for pieces, at the same time. I gave out these pieces knowing that it would take a while to get to them simply because they are practices pieces.
I've been working on most if not all of them, and I can safely say I've lain the sketch frames down for every piece that's being worked on. That being said, I may be able to finish and send out 2-3 pieces on the Queue this week, before taking a 2 week break. Finals are coming up soon, and I opted to take summer classes, which is why I've been working incredibly slowly.
THAT BEING SAID I WILL HAVE 5 WEEKS OFF WITH NOTHING TO DO BUT ART SO I WILL PROBABLY BE ABLE TO FINISH EVERY SINGLE PIECE VERY SOON~
I also will make it relevant that as I progress with my art pieces I will probably have commissions once I establish a precedent of art that I am confident with. That being said I may offer a full color piece to someone who designs my price sheets, no promises as of yet, but it's something that may be considered.
I definitely wanna thank everyone for your patience, I personally know the horrid awfulness that is waiting for art to get done, and if these were actual commissions they would have been done a long time ago. I've only justified pushing them off because 1) They're free and 2) I've been incredibly busy as of late.
That being said, Zaxard and Sonowthearctic fox, expect your pieces to be turned out by the end of this week.
Kal and Suki-Dono I offer to you what I offered to Zaxard and Sonowthearctic fox. Note me again with any updates you wanna put onto your commission before I work on and hopefully finish them. I understand after this much time tastes may have changed with what you've given me before, and if nothing else it'll help me revitalize doing work for y'all and have a clearer image of what you want at this point in time.

BACK TO WORK TIME
Posted 11 years agoHey guys, Finally finished one of the gift arts on my Queue, will update in the morning, so be sure to be on the lookout for it. It's about time I've started feeling productive again, and as a result I hope to get through as much of the art as I can as soon as I can without sacrificing the necessary practice.

Do benefits of the fandom equate to anything?
Posted 11 years agoFinals are over, and as much as I want to be happy and smiles I can't bring myself to do so. I've been working on art, so at the very least you can all look forward to several of the pieces being removed from my queue this week.
I just had a moment where life became too real for me. A moment where I realized nothing I do in this fandom equates to anything in the job world, in the real world. While the relationships I've made are lasting and true, I feel the need for success. I'm 20 years old yet I couldn't feel younger. I don't have internships, I don't have any future for me other then more school, and even within the school I'm in my GPA isn't as high as it could be if I drove myself harder.
Sometimes I think about leaving the fandom, and honestly it's one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. I'm overreacting. I've just started immersing myself in the fandom and it helps some of my feelings of impending horrid lonesomeness, but I have to wonder if it's the best choice for my future. I'm not saying I'm leaving the fandom as of yet, but I just have to wonder if the time I'm investing into art and into meeting people and going to events is really worth it....

Life Update
Posted 11 years agoHey all, been busy, finals week is approaching and I've laid out basic sketches for most of the work that I've got on back-up.
Ordinarily if I were taking money I would have refunded, or maybe given additional accoutrements on some art (I might for those who simply got line art, just because I know it's hard waiting for art) But because this is gift art and I did it so that I'd have drawing fodder on back-up I feel less bad about it...not that I don't feel bad at all. But expect all of my queue to be done by the end of June worst case scenario.
Going to Califur next weekend also, will put up a meme for it.

Posted 11 years agoI feel like my preferences as to how I carry myself change very often. Like... for the last 4 years I liked having super long shaggy hair. It gave me such pleasure until like 3 months ago. Once posted here in a list format, this will be the order in which I will be working on them. Order can be determined by my interest level, complexity, or even just the order they came in, but once posted here, they will ultimately be worked on in the order displayed below.

Posted 11 years agoHey all, so I have a new paint tool SAI, and I wanna learn how to get better, have my tablet, and my computer is not suck, so it's time to hone my skills for commission work later on. I'm opening a total of 5 free (3 on my FA 2 on my weasyl) slots for people to ask for me what to do. Note that I'm not incredibly experienced in the artistic media, yet at the same time, it's free, so make of it what you will.
Pieces may not be taken based on order, but will probably be take on how interesting I find the art, looking for pieces to entertain as well as challenge me atm.
(Edit) While a Ref sheet isn't required, it's highly encouraged, I can work much better with one then without one

Why do we settle? Is it because of our repeated failures? Or our realization that the majority of us are doomed to nothing more then a life of mediocrity? I entered college thinking I'd make a difference in this world, that as a thinker and a scholar, of theoretical physics I could advance humanity. As my aptitude for the subject was apparently not as up to the challenge as I was I shifted to a Microbiology major. Thinking perhaps unlocking various genetic sequence could help further advance our concept of humanity and our brethren. I now don't want to do that either realizing I'd have to sacrifice so much of my time to maybe develop a single new groundbreaking theorem. I now just want to leave college and get a job and live a life where my job is minimal. I'm not sure if it's because of niches, or depression and loss of motivation.
We all hit our realized niche when we're children. You dream of becoming president at one point or another in your childhood, to change the world in a way no one else can...you dream of brighter skies, and broader horizons. Then when the day comes that you realize you can't do these things...you throw away your initial dreams ad settle for something more realistic. If a time comes in your adolescence where it becomes exceedingly hard to do what you've settled for, you'll settle again, and this cycle perpetuates itself.
I've lost my motivation to become a geneticist, and to even get a masters in genetics, or anything beyond a BS in microbiology. We go to school to learn to get a job to work until we die. As my high school Substitute teacher once put it "Life sucks and then you die" I'm just wondering when I get to ENJOY life...or what the point of living even is anymore....

This is becoming me fast....I never seem to be able to grasp where I am or the work that I need to do in the moment, as much as I feel like I should.....Always looking to the future, never doing the work that's needed in the moment....
I want to be a good furry artist, I truly do, but I can never commit to really sitting and really working out drawing time. I want to get my degree and have a job as a microbiologist working in a crime lab, but can never commit to studying, I have all these different aspirations of my life, and what I want it to be. I have...so many different deals and goals that I want to see actualized, but I feel like my inability to focus on the present may affect just that....my mind may wander enough to shit doors because I just....can't get a consistent look no matter how hard I try, on the present.

Posted 11 years agoSo....this depression, I've been getting counseling for it. Even if I may have gotten to the roots of some of my problems and have been working through them, there's just a horribly feel of despair and anger that's been getting to me as of late.
I'm not sure what this feeling is....and while I've been getting help and might be getting medication for it long term...it's like...like I wanna scream. Like I wanna just scream and hit something and break everything and cry and just know that someone will notice me. The last 10 weeks have been utter hell, I don't see friends, I live essentially alone (I have asshole roommates which leads to me closing the door and being a recluse) I'm not dating anyone, I study alone, I go to the Gym alone....the only time I get to "Interact" with people have been at meets on saturdays....
I dunno, I just.....I feel like if I disappeared no one would notice, that for some reason I'm invisible to others....like I don't have either a purpose in life or a goal...that I'm just...drifting in the weave of things.....I'm open to advice on the subject.

Posted 11 years agoSo I've found that I only own 3 types of clothes. Jeans, hoodies and shirts. I wanna start going for a new style that is a bit more...well...stylish. Any suggestions on how I should revamp my style? I'm partial to incorporating vests if that's any help.
